If entering your domain sends the browser to an IP address, first determine whether you are seeing an actual HTTP redirect or simply the wrong site at the address returned by DNS. DNS only translates a name such as example.com into an address. A proxy, web server, or application must issue an HTTP 301, 302, 307, or 308 response to move the browser to another URL.

The reliable fix is to trace the complete chain—DNS record, delegated nameserver, proxy rule, origin virtual host, TLS configuration, application URL, and cache—then change the layer that produces the incorrect response. Correct DNS and nameserver delegation before troubleshooting an HTTP rule; otherwise you may be editing a dashboard that the public internet never queries.

What it means when a domain appears as an IP address
There are two very different symptoms that people describe as “a redirect to an IP.” The distinction determines the fix.
The address bar changes to an IP
If the browser starts at https://example.com and ends at http://203.0.113.24 (or another numeric address), an HTTP response sent a Location header. The response may have been generated by a CDN or proxy, the origin web server, or the application running on the origin. Inspecting the first response and every subsequent hop will reveal the status code and destination.

The address bar stays on the domain, but the page is wrong
A domain can resolve to the correct IP while the server returns a generic welcome page, a hosting provider’s placeholder, or another customer’s site. That is usually a virtual-host or host-binding problem, not a redirect. The server received the request but did not select a site configuration for the requested hostname.
The browser reports a certificate or connection warning
An incorrect address, an origin that is not configured for the hostname, or a certificate that does not include the apex domain or www can produce a warning before any application redirect is reached. Fix the hostname and TLS configuration at the layer serving the request.

A standard DNS lookup returns records such as A (IPv4), AAAA (IPv6), or CNAME (an alias). It does not send a browser from one URL to another. Huawei Cloud’s Domain Name Service documentation puts the distinction plainly: “Explicit or implicit URL forwarding is not performed over a standard DNS protocol, but uses 301 or 302 redirection over HTTP.”
The normal sequence is:
- The resolver asks the delegated authoritative nameserver for the domain’s records.
- The resolver returns one or more addresses or an alias.
- The browser connects to an address, sending the requested hostname in the HTTP
Hostheader and, for HTTPS, in the TLS server-name indication. - A proxy, web server, or application may return a 3xx response with a
Locationheader. - The browser follows that location and repeats the process until it receives a final response or reaches a redirect limit.
Consequently, seeing an IP proves only that the name resolved to an address or that an HTTP component chose an IP as a destination. It does not prove that DNS issued a redirect.

- Query both hostnames. Run a DNS lookup for the apex, such as
example.com, and forwww.example.com. Record every A, AAAA, and CNAME answer, not just the first address. An unexpected AAAA record can send IPv6 clients to a different server even when the A record is correct. - Verify delegation. At the registrar, note the nameservers assigned to the domain. Compare them with the DNS service where you edited the records. If the registrar delegates to a different provider, changes in the dashboard you used will have no public effect.
- Capture headers without hiding redirects. In browser developer tools, open the Network panel, enable preservation of the log, reload the page, and select the first document request. Record its status code and
Locationheader, then record each later hop. A command-line check can also show the first response:curl -sS -D - -o /dev/null --max-redirs 0 https://example.com/. Repeat over HTTP and HTTPS and for the apex andwwwnames. - Identify the emitting layer. A response carrying a CDN or proxy header and a rule matching the hostname points to the proxy. A response with the origin server’s signature points to the web server. A destination that matches the application’s configured site URL points to application logic. Treat the first 3xx as the cause; later responses are consequences.
- Test the origin only when permitted. If your host allows direct testing, connect to the origin address while supplying the correct
Hostheader and TLS name. Compare that response with the public hostname. Never bypass access controls or probe an unrelated server. - Retest from a clean client and resolver. Use a private browser window, clear any local DNS cache, and query a resolver that did not cache the old answer. Browsers and intermediaries can cache permanent redirects, so a fixed rule may appear broken until the cached response expires.
Fix the DNS records and delegation first
Correct the apex and www records
Open the authoritative DNS zone—the provider named by the registrar’s delegated nameservers—and inspect records for both names. Correct misspelled labels, stale addresses, and aliases that point to an old service. Remove an obsolete A or AAAA record when it sends some clients to a different origin, and ensure a CNAME is used only where the DNS provider permits it for that hostname.
Check the apex and www independently. It is common for the apex to point to one address while www points elsewhere or has no record at all. If both names should serve the same site, give them deliberate records and a deliberate canonical redirect rather than relying on an accidental default.
Confirm the nameserver handoff
Nameserver delegation is the boundary between the registrar and the DNS provider. If the domain was moved, transferred, or connected to a proxy, the registrar may still delegate to the previous nameservers. Compare the exact nameserver hostnames shown at the registrar with the service whose records you are editing. Fix delegation there, then wait for resolver caches to expire before judging the new records.
Check DNSSEC and negative answers
Cloudflare lists DNSSEC problems, resolver failures, and negative caching among common causes of incorrect DNS results. A broken DNSSEC chain can make valid records appear unavailable to validating resolvers. A previously missing record can also remain negatively cached, so clients may continue to report “does not exist” after you add it. Resolve DNS errors before testing an HTTP redirect; a proxy cannot apply a rule reliably if the hostname does not resolve to it.
Remove an unwanted proxy or CDN redirect
Redirect rules at a proxy are separate from DNS records. Review the proxy’s Redirect Rules, Bulk Redirects, legacy Page Rules, workers or edge functions, and any CDN configuration that can set a Location header. Search for rules matching the apex, www, an IP literal, or a broad wildcard that also catches the hostname.

A proxy needs a resolvable record, commonly an A or CNAME record that is enabled for proxying, so the request reaches its rule engine. Cloudflare documents a redirect-only alias pattern that uses the non-routing address 192.0.2.1 in an A record and then applies a 301 Redirect Rule. That address is reserved for documentation and example use; it is not a destination for normal traffic. The rule should preserve the original path and query string when the destination has equivalent routes.
If the redirect is temporary while you test, use a 302 so browsers and intermediaries are less likely to retain a permanent result. Remove or disable the rule that points to the IP, save the change, and inspect a fresh first response. Do not create a second rule to counteract the first; overlapping rules make the chain harder to reason about.
Configure the origin’s virtual host correctly
When DNS is correct but the domain displays an IP-based welcome page or another site, configure the origin to recognize the hostname. Nginx server blocks, Apache virtual hosts, and IIS bindings must include the exact apex and, where used, the www name. The default virtual host is what many servers return when no site definition matches.
- Add both hostnames to the intended site’s host list or server-name setting.
- Remove an old default site that catches unmatched requests, or make the intended site the deliberate default only when that is appropriate for the server.
- Reload the web server using its normal, documented configuration process and check its error log for rejected or duplicate host definitions.
- Ensure the TLS certificate presented for HTTPS includes every hostname the browser may request. A certificate for only
www.example.comdoes not coverexample.com.
After the virtual host is fixed, a direct origin test with the correct host and TLS name should return the intended site without an IP destination. If the direct test is correct but the public request still redirects, return to the proxy layer.
Correct the application’s canonical URL
Content-management systems and frameworks often store a canonical site URL. If that value contains an IP address, an old domain, or the wrong scheme, the application can redirect every request after the web server has accepted it.

- Confirm that DNS, the virtual host, and TLS work before changing application settings.
- Inspect the application’s URL or “site address” configuration and any environment variables that define the public origin.
- Check configuration files and database values for a hard-coded IP, an old hostname, or an
httpvalue that conflicts with the publichttpsURL. - Update the canonical URL to the intended hostname, preserving the chosen trailing-slash and path conventions used by the application.
- Clear the application’s own cache and retest with a fresh request. If the application runs behind a proxy, verify that it trusts the proxy’s scheme header; otherwise it may believe the request is HTTP and redirect repeatedly to HTTPS.
Do not change application data until you know the redirect originates there. A server-level 301 cannot be fixed inside the application because the request never reaches it.
Resolve HTTPS redirects and loops
Use an HTTPS destination for a permanent domain move. Verify that the certificate presented by the proxy or origin covers both the apex and www names that clients use. Cloudflare notes that it can serve a certificate for a DNS record when proxying is enabled, but the record must be configured for that service and the hostname must still be included in the certificate coverage.
Look for conflicting policies: the proxy may terminate HTTPS and send HTTP to the origin, while the origin sees HTTP and redirects back to HTTPS. That combination can create a loop. Choose one consistent policy, configure the origin to honor the proxy’s trusted scheme information, and test each hop separately. A single canonical rule should handle HTTP-to-HTTPS and apex-to-www (or the reverse), not several competing rules at different layers.

| Status | Meaning | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 301 | Permanent move; clients may cache it | A browser-facing domain or URL has moved permanently |
| 302 | Temporary move | Testing a destination or handling short maintenance |
| 307 | Temporary move while preserving the request method | Temporary API or form routing where a POST must remain a POST |
| 308 | Permanent move while preserving the request method | Permanent API or form routing where method preservation is required |
Cloudflare describes 301 as indicating that the requested resource has been assigned a new permanent URI. For ordinary page navigation, 301 is appropriate once the destination is verified. During diagnosis, a 302 reduces the chance that an old permanent response will mask your correction. For APIs and other non-GET requests, choose 307 or 308 when preserving the method and request body matters.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Preserve paths and query strings deliberately
A domain-level redirect should normally carry the original path and query string to the equivalent location. For example, a request for /account?next=orders should not silently become only the destination homepage if the target site has the corresponding route. In a proxy rule, enable path and query preservation explicitly; in application code, construct the destination from trusted request components and avoid accepting an arbitrary user-supplied redirect target.

If the new site has no equivalent route, map that specific path to a relevant replacement or return an intentional 404. Sending every path to an IP or a generic homepage hides broken links and makes later troubleshooting more difficult.
Clear caches after the configuration is fixed
DNS answers are cached according to their TTL, while negative answers can persist after a previously missing record is created. HTTP 301 responses can also be cached by browsers, proxies, and CDNs. Test in a private browser window, clear local DNS state where appropriate, and query through a clean resolver. Keep a temporary 302 during a test window if you are still changing the destination, then replace it with a 301 only after the chain is correct.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not treat a cached result as proof that the old rule still exists. Compare a newly captured first response, its age or cache headers where available, and the resolver that supplied the DNS answer.
An end-to-end repair procedure
- Write down the exact symptom. Record the starting URL, final URL, whether the address bar changed, and whether the problem affects the apex,
www, HTTP, HTTPS, or only some networks. - Query DNS. Capture all A, AAAA, and CNAME answers for both hostnames.
- Check delegation. Confirm the registrar’s nameservers are the ones whose zone you edited.
- Inspect the first HTTP response. Record the status and
Locationheader without following redirects automatically. - Classify the emitter. Decide whether the proxy, origin server, or application generated that response.
- Correct the emitting layer. Remove the bad rule, repair the virtual host, or update the application’s canonical URL; do not add compensating redirects elsewhere.
- Verify TLS and scheme handling. Test HTTP and HTTPS for both hostnames and check for loops.
- Retest cleanly. Use a private session and a resolver without the old cached answer, then follow the entire chain to the final status.
- Make the redirect permanent only when ready. Use 301 for a settled browser move, or 307/308 when a non-GET method must be preserved.
Prevent the problem from returning
- Keep a documented inventory of the apex and
wwwA, AAAA, and CNAME records. - Record which registrar nameservers are authoritative and restrict DNS changes to that provider.
- Review proxy redirect rules, bulk rules, workers, and legacy rules after domain migrations.
- Configure explicit virtual hosts and bindings instead of relying on a default site.
- Renew certificates before expiry and verify coverage for every public hostname.
- Store one canonical application URL and keep it synchronized with the proxy’s scheme and hostname.
- Use 302 while testing a destination; deploy 301 only after checking paths, query strings, and cache behavior.
- When an incident occurs, save the DNS answers and complete redirect chain before making changes.
The practical rule to remember
Fix the layer that emits the first wrong response. If DNS returns the wrong address, correct the authoritative record or nameserver delegation. If the first response is a 3xx with an IP in Location, remove the proxy, server, or application rule that created it. If there is no 3xx and the domain shows the wrong site, configure the origin’s virtual host and TLS names. This separation prevents DNS edits from being used to chase an HTTP problem—and prevents redirect rules from hiding a broken DNS setup.
