Create a deployment directory, download the production Compose file and environment template from the SparkyFitness project repository, replace every placeholder secret, set the public frontend URL, and start the stack with docker compose pull && docker compose up -d. Keep PostgreSQL and uploads on persistent host storage, place a reverse proxy in front when you need HTTPS, and do not expose PostgreSQL to the public internet.

What you are deploying
SparkyFitness is deployed as a group of containers rather than as a single executable. The application service uses PostgreSQL for its database, and the Compose network lets the application reach that database through the service name sparkyfitness-db. A host directory is mounted into PostgreSQL at /var/lib/postgresql/data; that mount is what keeps database contents when a container is recreated or replaced.

The browser address is controlled by SPARKY_FITNESS_FRONTEND_URL. It is not merely a display setting: the configured value must be the URL that users actually open. The project documentation notes that registration fails when the value does not match the URL being used.
The upstream project describes itself as under active development, so breaking changes are possible. Treat the deployment as an application you operate: back up data, review release notes, and avoid unattended image updates.

What a VPS must provide
The SparkyFitness documentation does not publish a guaranteed minimum for CPU, RAM, disk space, or bandwidth. A vendor plan cannot therefore be presented as an official requirement. Size the server around the number of users, database growth, upload volume, backup retention, and any other services sharing the machine.
VPS selection criteria
| Criterion | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Docker support | Docker Engine and the Docker Compose plugin can be installed on the provider’s supported Linux images. | The upstream deployment is distributed as a Compose stack. |
| Persistent storage | SSD-backed storage with snapshots or a separate backup facility. | PostgreSQL and application uploads must survive container replacement and should be recoverable after a host failure. |
| CPU and memory headroom | Capacity for PostgreSQL, the application containers, Docker itself, and the operating system under your expected workload. | There is no published numeric baseline, so headroom must be based on your workload rather than a claimed universal minimum. |
| Network policy | Predictable latency to your users, suitable egress limits, and the ability to open the public web ports. | The frontend must be reachable, and large uploads or backups can consume network quota. |
| Firewall controls | Provider-level rules plus a host firewall that can restrict inbound traffic. | You should publish only the web entry point and keep PostgreSQL private. |
| Reverse-proxy support | Ability to run a TLS-terminating reverse proxy on the VPS or on an adjacent service. | HTTPS certificates and the public hostname normally terminate before traffic is forwarded to the application. |
| Region and reliability | A region close to users, documented maintenance practices, and a recovery or snapshot option. | Region affects latency; provider reliability affects how quickly you can restore service. |
Start with a plan that leaves observable spare capacity instead of selecting the smallest plan solely because no minimum is published. Monitor container memory, CPU, disk usage, and PostgreSQL growth after launch. Increase the plan when those measurements show sustained pressure or when backups and uploads are competing with the database for space.

Prepare the VPS
Install a supported Linux system
Provision a current, supported Linux distribution and update it using the distribution’s normal security-update process. Create an administrative account with controlled SSH access, use key authentication where possible, and set the server’s time zone and hostname before deploying the application.
Install Docker Engine and Compose
Install Docker Engine and the Docker Compose plugin using the instructions for your Linux distribution. Verify both components before touching the application:
docker --versionshould return an installed Docker Engine version.docker compose versionshould return the Compose plugin version.- Your deployment user must be able to run Docker commands, either through the configured Docker group or an explicitly permitted administrative workflow.
Do not assume that a legacy standalone docker-compose binary is equivalent to the current plugin. The documented commands use the space-separated form, docker compose.
Configure the firewall
Allow the public HTTP and HTTPS ports you intend to use, and allow SSH only from the networks you need. If the application is exposed directly for an internal installation, allow its configured application port only to trusted networks. For a public installation behind a reverse proxy, the proxy is the public entry point and the application should remain on the private Docker network or be restricted to local access.
Never add a public firewall rule for PostgreSQL merely to make the application connect. The Compose service name sparkyfitness-db is intended for container-to-container communication.

Create the SparkyFitness deployment
1. Make a dedicated directory
Use a directory that will remain on the VPS and that is easy to back up:
mkdir sparkyfitness && cd sparkyfitness
Keep the Compose file and environment file together in this directory. Restrict permissions on the environment file because it contains database and authentication secrets.
2. Download the production files
From the SparkyFitness project repository, download the production Docker Compose file and the environment template into the directory you just created. Use the production file rather than a development example. Preserve the filenames expected by Compose, and inspect the file before starting so you know which services, ports, volume mounts, and image references it defines.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchDo not paste the environment file into a public repository, issue, chat transcript, or support ticket. If you keep deployment configuration in version control, commit a redacted template and provide the real values through a protected secret mechanism.
3. Set the required environment values
Replace every placeholder in the environment file. The important settings are:
| Variable | Required value or rule | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
SPARKY_FITNESS_DB_PASSWORD |
A strong, unique database password; do not retain the published example value. | Authenticates the application to PostgreSQL. |
SPARKY_FITNESS_API_ENCRYPTION_KEY |
A generated 64-character hexadecimal key. | Encrypts data used by the SparkyFitness API. |
BETTER_AUTH_SECRET |
A long, randomly generated secret kept private. | Signs authentication sessions. |
SPARKY_FITNESS_FRONTEND_URL |
The exact URL users will open, including the scheme and hostname and any non-standard port. | Controls frontend links and authentication origin checks. |
The README warns that the server refuses to start while placeholders remain and that leaving them unchanged would use a published database password. Treat a startup refusal as a security safeguard, not as a reason to bypass validation.
4. Generate secrets safely
Generate secrets with a cryptographically secure tool on a trusted machine or on the VPS, then paste them into the environment file without adding spaces or quotation marks that the template does not require. For the encryption key, count the characters and confirm that all 64 are hexadecimal digits. Do not reuse the database password as either application secret.

Changing an encryption or authentication secret can invalidate existing data or sessions. Before rotating one, determine how the current release handles migration and session invalidation, and make a backup. A simple replacement followed by a restart is not a safe rotation plan unless the application documentation explicitly says it is.
5. Set the URL users will actually use
If users will browse to https://fitness.example.net, set SPARKY_FITNESS_FRONTEND_URL to that exact URL. Do not set it to an internal container name, the VPS’s private address, or a temporary URL if the final service will use a different hostname. Include a port only when users really type a non-standard port. A mismatch commonly appears as a sign-up failure even though the containers appear healthy.
6. Pull images and start the stack
From the directory containing the production Compose file, run:
docker compose pull && docker compose up -d
The first command downloads the images referenced by the Compose file. The second creates the network, starts the database and application services, and runs them in the background. Check the result immediately:
docker compose ps
Services should report a running or healthy state according to the checks defined by the Compose file. If a service exits, inspect its logs before repeatedly restarting it:
docker compose logs --tail=200
After the stack is running, open the configured frontend URL. The README’s current example uses port 3004; that is a configuration example, not a universal requirement. Use the port and hostname exposed by your own Compose file and reverse-proxy configuration.
Make PostgreSQL and uploads persistent
Verify the database mount
The sample setup mounts a host directory at /var/lib/postgresql/data inside the PostgreSQL container. Confirm that the host-side path is on persistent disk and is not a temporary directory. A container can be replaced safely only when the database files live outside the container’s writable layer.

Record the host path, ownership, permissions, and backup schedule. Avoid editing files inside the PostgreSQL data directory while the database is running; use PostgreSQL’s backup tools for logical backups and filesystem or provider snapshots only when their consistency guarantees are understood.
Persist application uploads
Inspect the production Compose file for the upload volume or bind mount used by the application. Keep that host-side directory on persistent storage and include it in backups. The database backup alone is not enough if users’ uploaded files live elsewhere.
Back up both data sets
- Back up PostgreSQL using a PostgreSQL-aware method and protect the resulting files as carefully as the live database.
- Back up the application’s upload directory and preserve file permissions where required.
- Keep at least one copy outside the VPS so a disk failure or account-level incident does not destroy both production and backup.
- Document which Compose file, environment values, image versions, database backup, and upload archive belong together.
- Test a restore in a disposable environment before relying on the procedure. No successful restore test is implied by the installation instructions, so perform and record your own test.
Put HTTPS in front of SparkyFitness
For a public installation, point a DNS record at the VPS and run a reverse proxy that terminates TLS. The proxy receives HTTPS, presents the certificate, and forwards requests to the SparkyFitness frontend on the local host or Docker network. Keep the application and database ports private whenever the proxy can reach them internally.
- Create the DNS record for the hostname you intend to publish.
- Configure the reverse proxy to obtain and renew a certificate for that hostname.
- Forward requests to the frontend port defined by your Compose configuration. The README’s example is
3004, but verify your file instead of assuming it. - Set
SPARKY_FITNESS_FRONTEND_URLto the same HTTPS URL users enter in their browsers. - Allow the proxy’s public HTTP/HTTPS ports through the VPS firewall and restrict direct access to the backend application port.
- Open the HTTPS URL in a private browser window and test sign-up, sign-in, navigation, and an upload.
During initial troubleshooting, a direct local request can help distinguish an application problem from a proxy problem. Once HTTPS works, remove any unnecessary public exposure of the direct application port.

Common failures and how to fix them
Compose refuses to start because placeholders remain
Open the environment file and replace every placeholder, not only the four prominently documented variables. Recheck the database password, the 64-character hexadecimal encryption key, and the authentication secret. Run docker compose config to render and validate the Compose configuration without starting new containers, then start the stack again.
The containers run but sign-up fails
Compare the browser’s address bar with SPARKY_FITNESS_FRONTEND_URL character by character. Check the scheme (http versus https), hostname, and port. Correct the value, recreate the affected service so it receives the new environment, and test in a fresh browser session.
The application cannot reach PostgreSQL
Confirm that the database service is running in docker compose ps and that the application uses the Compose service name sparkyfitness-db, not localhost. Review both services’ logs for password, initialization, or migration errors. Make sure the database password in the application configuration matches the password used to initialize PostgreSQL.

Data disappears after an update or recreation
Inspect the Compose volume mapping and verify that PostgreSQL is mounted to persistent host storage at /var/lib/postgresql/data. Check the upload mount separately. If either service wrote to the container layer, stop making changes until you determine whether data can be recovered from a snapshot or backup.

Check DNS resolution, certificate status, firewall rules, proxy upstream settings, and the port actually published by Compose. Compare a local request to the direct application endpoint with a request through the public hostname. If the local request works but the public one fails, concentrate on DNS, TLS, firewall, or proxy configuration rather than database settings.
The VPS runs out of disk space
Check PostgreSQL growth, upload storage, Docker image layers, and retained logs separately. Remove only unused images or logs after confirming they are not needed for rollback or diagnosis. Expand persistent storage or move backups off-host rather than deleting database or upload files.
Updates without losing control
The project README advises against automatic container updates because SparkyFitness is under active development and breaking changes may occur. Use a deliberate release procedure:
- Read the release notes for the target version and identify database, environment, or volume changes.
- Confirm that current PostgreSQL and upload backups are complete and can be read.
- Record the running image references and the current Compose and environment files.
- Test the target release in a disposable deployment when the change is significant.
- Schedule the maintenance window, pull the reviewed images, and recreate the stack using the documented Compose workflow.
- Watch
docker compose psanddocker compose logsduring startup and migration. - Exercise sign-in, sign-up, database reads, and uploads before declaring the update complete.
Pin a tested image or release in production rather than allowing an unreviewed floating image to change underneath you. Keep the previous known-good configuration available so you can follow the project’s rollback guidance if a migration or breaking change causes trouble.
Recommended Free Tools
Features whose status needs extra caution
The project identifies AI Chatbot, Family & Friends access, and API documentation as beta or incomplete areas. Do not make those features part of an availability promise without testing the exact release you deploy. Treat them as optional functionality and monitor their behavior separately from the core sign-in, database, and upload paths.
Alternative packaging for FreeBSD and other workflows
A community FreeBSD project publishes ghcr.io/daemonless/sparkyfitness and examples for Podman Compose, AppJail, Bastille, and Ansible. Those examples cover database credentials, encryption and authentication secrets, uploads, backups, and database paths. They are an alternative packaging project, not the upstream installation authority. Before using one, verify the image’s provenance, inspect its Compose or automation files, and establish how updates and security fixes are delivered.
If your goal is the least ambiguous support path, use the upstream Docker Compose deployment on Linux. Choose an alternative only when its operating-system integration or automation is worth taking responsibility for a separate release and support process.
Production readiness checklist
- A supported Linux distribution is patched and Docker Engine plus the Compose plugin are installed.
- The production Compose file and environment template are stored in a dedicated, permission-restricted directory.
- All placeholders are replaced, including the database password, 64-character hexadecimal API encryption key, authentication secret, and frontend URL.
- The frontend URL exactly matches the public address, including HTTPS and any non-standard port.
- PostgreSQL persists to host storage at
/var/lib/postgresql/data, and application uploads use a persistent mount. - PostgreSQL is not exposed to the internet.
- The public firewall allows only the ports required for SSH and the chosen web entry point.
- HTTPS terminates at a configured reverse proxy when the service is public.
- Backups include both PostgreSQL and uploads, with an off-host copy and a tested restore procedure.
- Images are pinned or deliberately reviewed, automatic updates are disabled, and release notes are checked before upgrades.
- Logs and resource usage are monitored after initial deployment and after every migration.
Bottom line
Self-hosting SparkyFitness on a VPS is a conventional Docker Compose deployment, not a special VPS image. The reliable sequence is to prepare Linux and Docker, place the production Compose files in a dedicated directory, replace every secret placeholder, set the exact public frontend URL, start with docker compose pull && docker compose up -d, and verify persistence before inviting users. Because no official CPU, RAM, disk, or bandwidth minimum is published, choose and resize the VPS from measured workload rather than an invented specification. Add a reverse proxy for HTTPS, back up PostgreSQL and uploads together, and review every release while the project remains under active development.
