Adventures of a Magician requires Minecraft 1.20.1 with the Forge loader. For a multiplayer server, download the matching Adventures of a Magician ServerPack ZIP from CurseForge, install it in a dedicated directory, follow the included Forge start files, and plan for about 8 GB of allocated RAM. That 8 GB figure is the project’s published recommendation for smoother loading, not a guaranteed minimum for every group or world.
Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
Compatibility at a glance
Get the version alignment right before doing anything else. A modded Minecraft server can fail to start, reject clients, or generate a broken world when the Minecraft version, Forge build, modpack release, and server-pack release do not match.

What you need before installation
Prepare the following before extracting files or inviting players:
#1 Best Overall
- DELUXE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, three Bedrock add-ons, three exclusive Character Creator items, and 700 Minecoins.
- CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
- EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world filled with surprises.
- SURVIVE THE ADVENTURE — Face mysterious foes, travel across exciting landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
- PLAY TOGETHER — Play cross-platform with friends in Bedrock Edition on console, mobile, and PC, or join community servers in Java Edition on PC, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).
- A computer or managed server with enough free storage for the ZIP, extracted files, the world, logs, backups, and future updates.
- Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge for every player.
- The Adventures of a Magician client release and server-pack release that correspond to one another.
- Approximately 8 GB of memory you can dedicate to the server without starving the operating system or other services. The published recommendation is a starting point, not a universal minimum.
- Permission to create and run files in a dedicated server directory.
- A backup location separate from the live world.
- If friends will connect over the internet, a network arrangement that allows inbound connections, or a managed host that handles networking for you.
Do not mix a client profile from one release with a server pack from another simply because both are labeled 1.20.1. Minecraft and Forge version matching is necessary, but the modpack release also matters.
Download the correct Adventures of a Magician server pack
CurseForge publishes an Adventures of a Magician ServerPack 1.20.1 ZIP. Use the project’s official files page and select the server-pack release that matches the client pack your players will install.
Recommended Free Tools
The published files illustrate why checking the release number matters. Version 2.29.0’s server pack was listed at 640.96 MB on August 12, 2025, while version 3.26.0 was listed at 699.83 MB on May 31, 2026. File size can change as the project changes; it is not a substitute for checking the version label.
How to verify a match
- Choose the exact Adventures of a Magician client release for the group.
- Open the same project’s files list and locate the server-pack entry for that release.
- Check that both entries target Minecraft 1.20.1 and the Forge loader.
- Download the server-pack ZIP rather than a client-only modpack archive.
- Keep the ZIP unchanged as an original copy in case you need to rebuild the server.
The server-pack description states that it includes the files necessary to run a multiplayer server for Adventures of a Magician. Individual releases can still include different start files or instructions, so use the documentation and scripts bundled with the release you downloaded.
Install the server on your own computer
Self-hosting gives you direct control over files, mods, worlds, and backups. It also makes you responsible for Java, networking, security, updates, and keeping the machine online.

1. Create a dedicated directory
Make a new folder used only for this server. Avoid placing it inside a client installation, a temporary downloads folder, or a directory that is automatically synchronized to the cloud. A dedicated location makes backups and troubleshooting much safer.
2. Extract the ZIP
Extract the complete server-pack archive into the new directory. Preserve the folder structure. Do not drag individual JAR files into another server or delete files that appear unfamiliar; configuration, libraries, scripts, and metadata may all be required.
3. Read the included start instructions
Open the files supplied with the pack and follow the Forge/server start instructions for that release. Script names and launch arrangements can change between versions, so do not assume that a command or filename from another Forge pack applies here. If the pack includes separate Windows and Linux/macOS launch files, use the one appropriate to your operating system.
4. Complete the EULA step
On first launch, Minecraft may create an EULA file and stop. If that happens, open the generated file, read the Minecraft EULA, and change the acceptance setting only if you agree to its terms. Save the file, then use the included start procedure again.
5. Let the server generate its files
The first successful start creates the world, configuration directories, logs, and other runtime files. The initial launch can take longer than later starts because Forge and the modpack are loading and the world is being created. Wait for the server’s normal ready indication before attempting to connect.

6. Stop it cleanly
Use the server’s supported stop method rather than closing the terminal or killing the process. A clean stop gives Minecraft time to save chunks and reduces the chance of world corruption. Make a backup of the newly generated world before changing configuration or adding players.
7. Start with a controlled test
Connect one player first. Confirm that the player can join, move through several areas, open inventories, use the modpack’s progression systems, and leave without errors. Test a second player before announcing the server to the whole group.
8. Record the working release
Write down the Minecraft version, Forge version shown by the pack, modpack release, server-pack release, memory allocation, and any configuration changes. This small record makes future updates and support requests much easier.

- Launch once locally, then compare the displayed modpack release with the server’s release before connecting.
Other launchers may present different labels, but the requirements do not change: Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge, the same Adventures of a Magician release, and all dependencies included by that release. A client that starts successfully can still be incompatible with a server if its release differs.

How much RAM should the server have?
The project’s official page recommends allocating 8 GB of RAM to the modpack for smoother loading and fewer performance issues. Treat that as a practical starting allocation rather than a guaranteed minimum. Actual needs vary with simultaneous players, exploration distance, chunk generation, view and simulation settings, background services, and the host machine’s total memory.
Allocate memory without starving the host
- Reserve memory for the operating system and any other applications running on the machine.
- Do not assign all physical RAM to Java; the host still needs room for the operating system, file caches, networking, and monitoring tools.
- Begin near the published 8 GB recommendation, observe behavior during a realistic group session, and adjust only after checking logs and system memory use.
- Increase capacity when players explore in several directions, generate large amounts of new terrain, or experience repeatable pauses during chunk loading.
- More RAM cannot fix every problem. A slow processor, overloaded disk, poor network route, or incompatible mod can remain the bottleneck.
What to monitor during a test
Watch for long pauses while new terrain loads, steadily rising memory use, server tick delays, disconnects, and errors in the server log. Test during the busiest activity you expect, not only while everyone is standing in the starting area. If the machine begins swapping to disk or the operating system reports memory pressure, reduce other workloads or move the server to a machine with more headroom.

Networking and first connection test
For a server on your home network, test locally first. A player on the same network can reveal whether the Forge instance and modpack work before you add internet routing to the problem.
For remote friends, you must provide a reachable address and the server’s configured network port, then permit that traffic through the host firewall and any router performing network address translation. The exact procedure depends on your operating system, router, and internet provider; do not expose unrelated services or administrative ports. A managed host can remove much of this network work.
Use a repeatable connection checklist
- Start the server and wait for its ready state.
- Join from one client on the local network or through the host’s assigned address.
- Confirm that the client and server report the same Minecraft, Forge, and modpack releases.
- Move through an unexplored area and enter a dungeon or other demanding gameplay zone.
- Have a second player join, travel, and interact with the same world.
- Stop the server cleanly and verify that the world saves before the next test.
Backups, updates, and safe changes
Back up before every change
Stop the server cleanly, then copy the world and important configuration files to storage outside the live server directory. Keep more than one dated backup. A backup on the same disk protects against a bad configuration change but not a disk failure, so use a separate drive or storage service when possible.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
Update in a controlled order
- Read the new client and server-pack release notes and confirm that it still targets Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge.
- Download the matching server-pack ZIP and retain the previous release as a rollback copy.
- Back up the current world and configuration.
- Test the updated files on a copied world or a temporary test instance first.
- Have every player update to the same client release before reopening the live world.
- Keep the old server directory until the new release has survived a normal play session.
Never replace only one or two mod files because a player received a mismatch error. The server pack is a coordinated release; partial replacement can create dependency conflicts or a world that will not load.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Self-hosting or managed Minecraft server hosting?
The right choice depends less on the modpack’s theme than on who should operate the machine. Self-hosting can be inexpensive when you already have suitable hardware and a reliable connection. Managed hosting trades some low-level control for simpler installation, support, backups, and uptime tools.
| Decision factor | Self-hosted server | Managed host |
|---|---|---|
| Initial setup | You download, extract, configure, test, and troubleshoot the pack. | Often provides a pre-installed modpack or one-click installation. |
| File and mod control | Direct access to every server file and configuration. | Usually available through a panel or file manager, subject to the provider’s rules. |
| RAM and hardware | Limited by your machine’s available memory and processor. | Choose from the provider’s plans and upgrade options; exact limits vary. |
| Backups | You design and verify the backup routine. | May include scheduled backups or snapshots; retention and restore limits vary. |
| Location and latency | Depends on your home or office connection. | Depends on available data-center regions and the location of your players. |
| Support | You diagnose Java, Forge, networking, and mod errors. | Support may help with panel, server, or modpack issues; scope varies by provider. |
| Uptime | The server is online only when your machine and connection are available. | Designed for persistent availability, subject to maintenance and the chosen plan. |
| Updates | You control timing and rollback, but must perform the work. | Panels may simplify updates, while you still need to verify client compatibility and backups. |
| Total cost | Uses existing hardware but can add electricity, storage, and maintenance costs. | Recurring monthly charge; current prices and resource limits must be checked with the provider. |
Provider-specific notes
The server-pack description includes a creator-page offer for BisectHosting: 25% off the first month with the code ObsidianCore. Treat that as a promotional statement attached to that release, not a permanent price. Confirm that the code, eligibility, renewal pricing, and terms still apply before paying.
StickyPiston advertises pre-installed Adventures of a Magician hosting, one-click installation, updates, support, and optimization assistance. CreeperHost maintains a dedicated page for the modpack and positions its service for persistent co-op worlds and performance as exploration expands. Those descriptions do not establish current plan prices, RAM limits, data-center locations, backup retention, or uptime guarantees. Check each provider’s current terms immediately before ordering.
Troubleshoot the problems that appear most often
The server will not start
- Confirm that you extracted the complete server pack rather than a client archive.
- Recheck the included Forge/server start instructions and use the script supplied with that release.
- Read the first error in the log, not only the final shutdown message.
- Verify that the required Java installation is available to the launch process and that the server has enough memory reserved.
- Restore the original pack in a clean directory if you manually removed or replaced files.
Players receive a mod or version mismatch
- Compare Minecraft 1.20.1 on every client and the server.
- Compare Forge versions as well as the modpack release.
- Ensure that the server-pack release exactly matches the client release.
- Reinstall the client profile from the launcher if dependencies or configuration files were changed manually.
Players disconnect while exploring
- Check whether the disconnect occurs during heavy new-chunk generation.
- Review server logs and system memory use during the event.
- Confirm that the machine has headroom beyond the approximately 8 GB allocation and is not swapping.
- Test with fewer simultaneous explorers and a lower workload before changing multiple settings at once.
- If the home connection is unstable or difficult to reach, compare the result with a managed host in a region close to the players.
The world appears damaged after a change
Stop the server, preserve the affected world directory, and restore the most recent known-good backup. Do not continue experimenting on the only copy. Reproduce the change on a test copy, then review the modpack release documentation before returning to the live world.
