To message players in a Roblox experience, join an experience with chat enabled, press / on a computer or tap the chat icon, type your message, then press Enter/Return or the on-screen send control. If you mean a message to a friend outside a game, use Roblox’s Chat tab instead.
Send a message in a Roblox experience

Join an experience that has chat enabled. The experience’s developer controls whether in-game chat is available.

On a computer, press / to open the chat window, or tap the chat icon at the top left of the screen.

Type your message in the chat bar.

Press Enter or Return on a physical keyboard. On a phone or tablet, use the on-screen send or return control.

Roblox’s Experience Chat instructions document these controls. If the slash shortcut does not work with your keyboard layout, try the backslash key.
Message a friend outside an experience
For a conversation that is not tied to the game you are currently playing, open the Chat tab on a phone or tablet. Select an existing conversation, or tap the plus button to choose friends and start one. During a regional rollout, the tab may still be labeled Party. This is separate from the chat bar inside an experience. See Roblox’s Chatting and Playing with Friends guide.

Why chat may be missing or unavailable
Roblox requires an age check for communication features, and access can depend on the account’s age group, communication settings, and region. An experience may also have chat disabled by its developer.

Check Settings → Privacy & content restrictions → Communication → Experience chat. Roblox says users aged 5–9 need parental consent to enable Experience chat. Users under 16 need parental consent for Direct chat.

If the account is linked to a parent, ask them to review Parental Controls → Settings You Manage → Communication settings.

If chat is available but the slash key does not open it, try the chat icon or the backslash key.
These controls and age requirements are described in Roblox’s Chat Privacy and User Settings and Parental Controls Overview. Regional restrictions can still affect availability.

Experience chat and Direct chat are different
Experience chat is conversation among players in the current game. Roblox’s parental-controls overview describes Game chat as messaging users in similar age groups in a game, and Game direct chat as messaging through /w. These are distinct from messages to a friend through the Chat tab. Parental settings do not apply to chat features that developers build independently.
Use chat safely
Roblox says experience chat is filtered to help prevent inappropriate content and personally identifiable information from being visible. Avoid sharing identifying or sensitive details. If another player’s messages are a problem, Roblox provides options to mute or block players and report messages from within the conversation.
