Check the latest official status, weigh the receiver’s likely role against eligible alternatives in your league, and preserve a later-kickoff replacement when your lineup rules allow it.
What “Questionable” actually tells you
The NFL’s injury-report policy distinguishes game availability from practice participation. The policy states: “As amended, Questionable means it is uncertain as to whether the player will play in the game; Doubtful means it is unlikely the player will participate; and Out means the player will not play.” The NFL Competition Committee published that revision on NFL.com in 2016 (NFL injury-report policy).
Teams also report practice participation as did not participate, limited participation, or full participation. Those practice labels and a game-status designation are different pieces of information. Neither a Questionable tag nor an active listing tells you how many snaps, routes, or targets the receiver will get.
The NFL said approximately 95% of players listed as Probable in prior years played when explaining why it removed that category in 2016. That is a historical figure about the former Probable designation, not a current-season rate and not a basis for estimating whether a Questionable receiver will play.

A start-or-sit process for uncertain receivers

Check the current official status and kickoff time
Look at the current NFL or team injury information for the player and game, then recheck near your lineup deadline. Status is specific to a week and matchup, so an old report—or an example from a past week—cannot settle this week’s decision. The NFL’s Week 4, 2026 injury roundup is an example of a week-specific report, not evergreen player advice.

Separate the chance to play from the likely role
Ask two separate questions: how much evidence is there that the receiver will be available, and what is known about his likely participation if available? Do not turn “Questionable” directly into “start” or “sit,” and do not assume that “active” means an unrestricted workload. The designation defines availability, not fantasy production.

Compare him with your actual replacement
Identify the best eligible alternative on your roster and compare the two in the context of your league’s scoring, lineup slot, and current matchup information. A matchup rating can add context: Yahoo’s fantasy matchup page offers player matchup ratings and status references. Treat it as a changing reference, not a guarantee of performance or a substitute for current availability and role information.

Account for kickoff timing and substitution rules
If the uncertain receiver plays later than your other options, consider leaving an eligible replacement who has not yet played available for a possible swap. That flexibility depends on your platform, league settings, roster eligibility, and lineup deadlines. Check those rules rather than assuming every league permits the same moves.

Decide with the uncertainty that remains
If official information is still inconclusive when you must set the lineup, make the choice using your roster context: the replacement’s value, the receiver’s available role evidence, scoring format, and remaining substitution options. There is no supported universal probability or single start/sit answer for every league.
How to weigh the alternatives
Use these factors to compare the receiver and the best eligible replacement. They are decision points, not a player ranking or a claim that any one factor guarantees a result.
- Availability: What is the latest official game designation, and has it changed?
- Role evidence: What reliable information is available about expected participation? Do not infer a full workload from an active designation alone.
- League fit: How does each player fit the scoring format and roster slot you need to fill?
- Replacement quality: Is your alternative a dependable option or one whose own availability or role is uncertain?
- Timing and flexibility: When do the players’ games begin, and can your league still make the relevant swap?
Use current information, not a fixed rule
Fantasy status and matchup resources change, and league rules differ. Yahoo’s matchup reference may help with matchup context, while the NFL and team reports provide current availability information. Neither resource establishes a player-specific workload projection here. Make the decision for the particular week, player, alternatives, and rules in your league.
