Set the player-login password with ServerPassword in the active PalWorldSettings.ini file. Start the dedicated server once to create its folders, copy the default settings file into the platform-specific saved configuration directory, edit the copy, then fully restart the server.

Do not edit only DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini. Pocketpair’s server guide explicitly warns that changes made there will not be applied.

Which Palworld setting controls access?
ServerPassword is the password players must provide to log in to the dedicated server. It is separate from AdminPassword, which is used to obtain administrative privileges after connecting.

Entering an admin password does not replace the player-login password. If players are being rejected when they try to join, check ServerPassword. If a connected operator cannot use admin commands, check AdminPassword instead.

Find the active configuration file
The file that controls the running server is the platform-specific PalWorldSettings.ini inside the saved configuration directory. Its location depends on the operating system:

The WindowsServer and LinuxServer folder names are not interchangeable. Use the directory that matches the operating system running the dedicated server.
Prepare the server before editing
- Install or otherwise place the Palworld dedicated server so the
PalServerdirectory contains the server files. - Start the server once. Pocketpair’s documentation says the saved configuration directories are created after startup; they may not exist beforehand.
- Locate
DefaultPalWorldSettings.iniand the platform-specific saved configuration directory shown above.
The default file is a template. The server reads the copy named PalWorldSettings.ini in PalSavedConfigWindowsServer on Windows or Pal/Saved/Config/LinuxServer on Linux. Editing the template alone leaves the active settings unchanged.

Set the password on Windows
- Open the Palworld server installation directory and locate
DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini. - Copy that file into
steamappscommonPalServerPalSavedConfigWindowsServer. - Rename the copied file to
PalWorldSettings.iniif it does not already have that name. - Open the saved
PalWorldSettings.iniin a plain-text editor. - Find the
OptionSettingsconfiguration line. Add or change theServerPasswordvalue so it uses the required syntax:ServerPassword="your-password". - Leave the rest of the
OptionSettingsentries intact, save the file, and fully restart the dedicated server.
Use the file under PalSavedConfigWindowsServer for the edit. Opening a second copy elsewhere can make it appear that the password was saved even though the running server never reads that file.
Set the password on Linux
- Start the dedicated server once so its saved configuration directories are generated.
- Copy
DefaultPalWorldSettings.iniintosteamapps/common/PalServer/Pal/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/. - Name the copied file
PalWorldSettings.ini. - Open that saved file with your preferred text editor.
- Within the
OptionSettingsline, setServerPassword="your-password", preserving the other settings already present. - Save the file and fully restart the server so it loads the changed configuration.
The Linux file must be in the LinuxServer directory. A file placed in the Windows configuration directory, or a change made only to the default template, will not control a Linux server.
Use the correct configuration syntax
ServerPassword belongs inside the existing OptionSettings configuration. The value is written in quotation marks, for example ServerPassword="your-password". Do not replace the complete settings line with only the password; retain the other options in the file and change the value associated with this parameter.

The password you choose becomes the credential required for player login. Keep a record of the exact spelling and capitalization you used so that players enter the same value. If you later change it, edit the active file again and restart the server for the new value to take effect.
Restart and confirm that the password works
Saving the file is not enough by itself. Fully restart the dedicated server after the edit; the restart causes the server to reload PalWorldSettings.ini.
- Stop the running dedicated-server process using the method you normally use to operate it.
- Start the server again.
- Have a player connect using the server’s normal connection method and enter the configured password when prompted.
- If the server still allows an unauthenticated login, revisit the active path and confirm that the parameter was changed in
PalWorldSettings.ini, not inDefaultPalWorldSettings.ini.
The password protects the login step; it does not change the server’s address, port, world, or administrative settings.

How players join after a password is set
Dedicated-server connection
Pocketpair’s connection instructions direct dedicated-server players to enter the server IP address and port in the server-list form. Give players the correct address and port for the machine running the dedicated server, along with the new ServerPassword.
Community-server connection
For a community server, players select Community server, find the server in the community list, and select it. They still use the configured ServerPassword as the player-login credential.
Choosing the wrong connection flow can look like a password problem. An IP-and-port connection is for the dedicated-server form; a listed community server is selected through the Community server list.

Troubleshoot a Palworld server password that does not work
The password has no effect
- Open the active
PalWorldSettings.iniunderPalSavedConfigWindowsServerorPal/Saved/Config/LinuxServer, depending on the host operating system. - Confirm that
ServerPasswordappears in theOptionSettingsconfiguration and has a quoted value. - Check that you copied the default template into the saved directory and named the active copy
PalWorldSettings.ini. - Fully restart the server after saving. A file edit made while the server remains running is not enough to reload the setting.
You edited the wrong file
DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini is a template. Pocketpair states that editing it alone will not affect the changes. Make the edit in the saved, platform-specific PalWorldSettings.ini instead.
The platform folder is wrong
Windows uses WindowsServer; Linux uses LinuxServer. Verify the host operating system rather than the computer from which you are connecting. A Windows player connecting to a Linux-hosted server does not make the server a Windows installation.
Players cannot find the server
Finding the server is separate from authenticating with its password. For a dedicated server, verify that players are entering the correct IP address and port. For a community server, have them select Community server and locate the server in that list before entering the login credential.
Admin commands fail after login
ServerPassword only controls player login. Administrative privileges use the separate AdminPassword setting. Check that value when a player can join but cannot obtain admin access.
A practical password-change checklist
- Start the server once if the saved configuration directories have not yet been created.
- Use the correct platform directory:
WindowsServeron Windows orLinuxServeron Linux. - Edit
PalWorldSettings.ini, notDefaultPalWorldSettings.ini. - Set
ServerPassword="your-password"insideOptionSettings. - Save the file without removing the other settings.
- Fully restart the server.
- Give players the correct IP-and-port details for a dedicated server, or direct them to the Community server list.
- Keep
AdminPasswordseparate when configuring administrative access.
Following those checks addresses the two causes most often mistaken for a bad password: editing the inactive template and using the wrong connection path.
