Open Server Manager from the main menu, add the server, enter a name, and enter an administrator password; saving that form claims the server. A separate player password is optional and is configured later under Server Settings.

Understand the two Satisfactory server passwords
Satisfactory has two separate password controls, and they serve different purposes. The administrator password protects management functions. The player password controls whether people may join the game. You can use the admin password without enabling a player password, or enable both when you want a private server with restricted administration.

| Password | Where it is set | What it protects | Default state |
|---|---|---|---|
| Administrator password | Server Manager when the server is claimed | Administrative actions such as loading saves, changing server options, and creating new games | Required to claim the server |
| Player password | Server Manager > Server Settings > Player password protection | Joining the server as a player | Off by default |
The Official Satisfactory Wiki’s dedicated-server documentation describes claiming as a prerequisite for starting a game. Once claimed, the server can create a new game or import an existing save from Server Manager.
Set the administrator password on a new server
Use this procedure the first time you connect to a dedicated server that has not yet been claimed. The administrator password is not a console command or a Steam account password; it is stored in the server’s settings and used by Server Manager to authenticate administrators.
#1 Best Overall
1. Open Server Manager
- Launch Satisfactory and open Server Manager from the main menu.
- Choose the option to add a server.
- Enter the server address and port requested by the dialog. If your host supplied a different port, use that value rather than assuming the default.
If the server is already listed, select it instead of adding a duplicate entry. The exact address and port fields can look different between game builds and hosting panels, but the password is set in the Server Manager workflow rather than in a separate account portal.
2. Give the server a name
Enter a recognizable server name. This is the label shown in your Server Manager list and is also one of the values cleared if you later perform a settings-file reset, so choose a name you can restore easily.

- Type the password in the Administrator password field.
- Confirm or save the form.
- Wait for Server Manager to report that the server is claimed, then reconnect to the server entry.
Claiming associates the server with that administrator password. Until this step succeeds, the dedicated server cannot start a playable game session. The password is also required before an administrator can load a save, change server options, or create a new game.
4. Start a new game or import a save
After the claim succeeds, use the same Server Manager entry to create a new game or import an existing game. Claiming does not itself choose a world; it grants the authenticated account permission to perform those server-management actions.
Enable a player password (optional)
A player password is independent of the administrator password and is disabled by default. Leave it off for an open community server. Turn it on when only people who know the player password should be able to join.
- Open Server Manager from the main menu and select the claimed server.
- Authenticate if Server Manager asks for the current administrator password.
- Open the Server Settings tab.
- Find Player password protection and click Change Password beside it.
- Enter the player password and confirm the change.
The official wiki identifies this Change Password control as the place to enable player-password protection. Tell players the exact password, including capitalization and punctuation. A player who does not know it will be unable to join while protection is enabled, even if that person can see the server in the browser.

How administrators authenticate
Server Manager keeps the server entry, but administrative privileges still require authentication. Select the server and click Authenticate, then enter the current administrator password. A successful authentication unlocks the management controls for that session, including save loading, option changes, and new-game creation.
Do not give the administrator password to ordinary players unless they should have those privileges. If you only need to restrict who joins, use the player password and keep the administrator password separate.
Change an existing administrator password
You must know the current administrator password to change it through the game interface. A new password cannot be substituted for the old one at the authentication prompt.
- Open Server Manager and select the server.
- Click Authenticate.
- Enter the current administrator password and confirm.
- Open the Server Settings tab.
- Locate Admin Password and click Change Password.
- Enter the new administrator password and confirm it.
This sequence matches the change procedure documented by hosting providers such as HostHavoc, BisectHosting, and Apex Hosting. Some hosting panels ask you to restart the server after saving the new value. If the old password continues to work after the change, stop and restart the server from the host panel, then authenticate again with the new password.
After changing the password
- Update any trusted administrators who need management access.
- Remove the old password from shared notes, chat messages, scripts, and password managers that should no longer have access.
- Authenticate a fresh Server Manager session with the new password before assuming the change is complete.
- Do not confuse a failed player login with a failed admin authentication; each password is checked in a different context.
Reset a forgotten administrator password
There is no in-game “forgot password” button for the Satisfactory administrator password. If nobody knows the current password, the documented recovery method is to remove the server-settings save file, then claim the server again with a new password.
What file to remove
The file is named ServerSettings.PORT.sav, where PORT is the server’s listening port. For example, a server using port 7777 may have a file named ServerSettings.7777.sav. The Official Satisfactory Wiki specifies this filename pattern.
Safe reset procedure
- Stop the dedicated server completely. Do not delete a settings file while the process is still running.
- Use your hosting panel’s file manager or the installation/container file system to locate the matching
ServerSettings.PORT.savfile. - Make a backup copy outside the active server directory. Keep the original until the server has been reclaimed and verified.
- Delete the active settings file, or move it out of the directory so it cannot be loaded.
- Start or restart the server.
- Open Server Manager, add or select the server, and claim it by entering a new administrator password.
- Recreate any optional player-password setting and other server settings you want to retain.
File paths vary by operating system, dedicated-server installation, and hosting container. The XGamingServer claim-and-reset guide likewise cautions that you should locate the file for your particular installation and back it up before deleting it. Do not assume that a path shown for one host applies to another.
What a reset also removes
Deleting the settings file is broader than changing one password. It also resets the server name, player password, auto-load session name, and certificate. Preserve the backup so you can refer to the previous values, then re-enter the settings deliberately after the new claim. Your game saves are not identified as the settings file itself, but you should still maintain a normal save backup before making server-file changes.

“Authenticate” rejects a password you believe is correct
- Check that you are entering the administrator password, not the player password.
- Verify capitalization, spaces, punctuation, and keyboard layout.
- Confirm that Server Manager is pointed at the correct address and port; two server entries can look similar while using different settings.
- If the password was recently changed, restart the server when your host panel provides a restart control, then authenticate again.
- Ask another current administrator whether the password was changed. Do not repeatedly overwrite settings while the server is running.
The “Change Password” control is unavailable
Server Manager normally exposes the admin-password control only after you select the server and authenticate with the current password. Authenticate first, then open Server Settings. If the server is unclaimed, complete the claim flow instead of trying to edit an existing admin password.
Players can still join without a password
Setting an administrator password alone does not protect player access. Open Server Settings and use Change Password next to Player password protection. Confirm that protection is enabled and that players are using the new player password rather than the admin credential.
The server asks for a password after a reset
That is expected if the old settings file was not removed from the active directory, or if the server restarted before the file was moved. Stop the server, verify the exact port-specific filename, back it up, remove the active copy, and restart. Then perform the claim step again.

Those values are stored with the settings file and are cleared by the documented reset method. Re-enter the name and optional player password after reclaiming the server. This is why backing up the file before deletion matters.
You cannot find the settings file
Use the host’s file manager, container console, or installation search to look for ServerSettings. followed by the server port and .sav. Check that you are browsing the live server volume rather than a local client installation. If a managed host hides the file system, ask that host where its Satisfactory server settings are stored; the exact path is host-specific.
Choose passwords that are practical to operate
Use two different passwords: one for administration and one for players. The admin credential grants access to disruptive actions, so share it only with people who should manage the server. The player credential can be distributed more broadly and replaced without giving anyone administrative control.
- Use a long, unique administrator password that is not reused for Steam, email, or the hosting panel.
- Store both credentials in a password manager rather than in public chat.
- When an administrator leaves the group, change the admin password and have current admins authenticate with the replacement.
- When a player-password link or message is widely shared, rotate the player password without changing the admin credential.
- Record the server port with the server name so the correct
ServerSettings.PORT.savfile can be identified during recovery.
These operational practices do not replace the in-game controls; they prevent the most common mix-ups between claiming, administration, and player access.

Version and hosting caveats
The claim and password workflow above is documented for Satisfactory dedicated servers, but interface labels and exact placement can change with a game update. The available material does not verify every label against a specific 2026 game build. If a button has moved, look for the same functions—Server Manager, Authenticate, Server Settings, Admin Password, and Player password protection—rather than relying on an older screenshot.
Third-party host instructions are useful for the change and reset sequence, but file locations and restart controls are specific to each hosting environment. Follow your host’s stop, backup, and restart requirements while keeping the port-based filename and the reset consequences in mind.
Quick recovery checklist
- New server: Server Manager > Add server > name it > enter administrator password > claim.
- Private access: Server Settings > Player password protection > Change Password.
- Known admin password: Authenticate with the current password, then Server Settings > Admin Password > Change Password.
- Forgotten admin password: Stop the server, back up and remove
ServerSettings.PORT.sav, restart, and claim again. - After a reset: Re-enter the server name, player password, auto-load session, and any other cleared settings.
