WordPress Changes Not Showing: Causes and Fixes

When WordPress changes do not appear, identify whether the wrong page, template, cache layer or failed asset is responsible. This guide gives an ordered purge and debugging process.

If a WordPress edit saves but visitors still see the old page, first verify the exact public URL, page, template and site you edited. Then test while logged out in a private window or with a hard refresh. Clear caches in order—WordPress or your cache plugin, the host or reverse proxy, the CDN, and finally the browser. If the old output survives every purge, inspect the page source, Network panel and console, then check templates, plugins, themes, PHP, memory and file errors.

WordPress itself does not ship with a page cache by default. Older output is usually introduced by a browser, a plugin, hosting infrastructure, a reverse proxy, a CDN or an object cache. Those layers can cache HTML separately from CSS, JavaScript, images and theme files, so changing one layer may leave another serving the previous version.

Start with this seven-minute check

Use this sequence before changing production settings. It separates a display problem from an editing or server problem without deleting useful configuration.

  1. Open the exact public URL. Copy the address visitors use, including any trailing path, language prefix or query string. Open it while logged out. Compare it with the editor preview and with the page you intended to publish.
  2. Make a deliberately obvious test edit. Add a temporary sentence such as “Cache test” or change a heading color dramatically. A tiny spacing change can be hidden by a stale stylesheet or an identical-looking font.
  3. Use a private window and a hard refresh. A private window removes most existing cookies and browser cache from the test, but it cannot bypass a host, reverse-proxy or CDN cache. If the private window is still old, continue down the server-side list.
  4. Confirm the save and publication state. Check that the editor reports the change as published, not as a draft, scheduled revision or autosave. Reopen the page in the editor and verify the new text is still present.
  5. Purge the active WordPress cache. Use the cache plugin’s purge or clear-all control. If a theme or visual builder has a separate “regenerate CSS” or “rebuild assets” action, run that too.
  6. Purge infrastructure caches. Clear the managed host or server cache, any reverse proxy such as Varnish, and the CDN cache. Start with the affected URL or asset when the control allows it; use a full-site purge only when necessary.
  7. Check the delivered files. View page source and inspect the browser Network and Console panels. Look for old HTML, an old CSS or JavaScript filename, 304 responses, 404s, blocked requests and JavaScript errors.

Remove the temporary test edit after the diagnosis. A successful save proves that WordPress stored the edit; it does not prove that every layer handling the public request has been invalidated.

Which cache is showing the old version?

Several independent layers can answer a request. Compare them by where they live, what they cache and how broadly a purge affects visitors.

Layer Typical scope What can remain stale Persistence and risk First action
Browser cache One visitor, one device HTML, CSS, JavaScript, images and fonts Usually temporary; clearing it affects that browser only Private window, hard refresh, then clear site data
WordPress page-cache plugin One URL, a group of URLs or the whole site Generated HTML, sometimes compressed or mobile variants Persists until expiry or purge; changing settings can affect performance Purge the plugin cache and regenerate builder assets
Host or server cache Often the entire site, sometimes selected routes Rendered HTML and server-side responses Controlled by the host; expiry or manual purge may be required Use the host dashboard or ask support for the purge control
Reverse proxy Public responses routed through the proxy Older HTTP responses before they reach WordPress May survive WordPress changes until expiry or invalidation Purge the proxy, for example a Varnish cache, if present
CDN Edge locations, one URL or one asset path CSS, JavaScript, images, fonts and HTML Can differ by geographic edge; broad purges are slower and more disruptive Purge the affected URL or asset, then test from another network
Object cache Database queries and computed objects on the server Menus, settings, queries or builder data used to render a page Separate from browser and page caches; flushing can temporarily increase database load Flush it only when page and asset purges do not resolve dynamic data

The WordPress documentation team states, “WordPress does not come with a cache by default,” and explains that caching is commonly added by plugins, hosts and other infrastructure. The same FAQ recommends clearing the browser cache when edits are not visible: WordPress FAQ: I make changes and nothing happens.

Browser cache: rule out the visitor’s copy

A browser can reuse a previously stored document or static asset when it believes the cached response is still valid. This is especially common after a CSS, JavaScript, image or font change: the HTML may be new while the browser continues to use an older asset.

Test without deleting everything

  1. Open the exact URL in a private or incognito window.
  2. In a normal window, perform a hard reload (for example, the browser’s “Reload without cache” command in developer tools, or the platform-specific hard-refresh shortcut).
  3. If only one device is affected, clear site data for that domain rather than wiping every saved login and preference.
  4. Close and reopen the tab after clearing data, then repeat the test while logged out.

If the private window shows the new page but your normal window does not, the server is probably correct and the stale copy is local. If both windows show the old page, continue with WordPress, host and CDN caches; private browsing does not bypass those layers.

WordPress and plugin page caches

Many caching plugins create a static HTML response so WordPress does not rebuild the page for every request. After publishing, changing a theme, or editing a menu, that generated file can remain until its expiry time or an explicit purge.

Purge the active cache

  1. Identify which caching plugin is active under the installed plugins list. Do not purge a plugin that is inactive or assume that two plugins share one cache.
  2. Use its dashboard or toolbar command labeled “Purge,” “Clear cache,” “Delete cache” or “Flush cache.” A “clear all” action affects the whole site; a URL-specific purge is safer when available.
  3. If a block, theme or visual builder has a separate CSS cache, run its “Regenerate CSS,” “Rebuild files” or equivalent command.
  4. Log out or use a private window and request the public URL again. Keep the test edit large enough to identify the new response.

Some plugins cache different versions for logged-in users, mobile devices, cookies or query strings. A page that looks correct while you are logged in may still be an older anonymous version. Test the same state your visitors use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Host, server and reverse-proxy caches

Managed WordPress hosts may cache pages outside the WordPress dashboard. A reverse proxy, including a Varnish-style layer, can return an older HTTP response before the request reaches PHP or WordPress. Purging the plugin alone therefore may have no visible effect.

Find and clear the infrastructure layer

  1. Open the hosting control panel and look for a performance, caching or purge section. The label may refer to “server cache,” “dynamic cache,” “full-page cache” or “Varnish.”
  2. Purge the affected URL first when the host supports path-based invalidation. Use a full purge if the change affects shared navigation, a template or site-wide styles.
  3. If no control is exposed, ask the host which cache serves public HTML, how long it persists and how to invalidate one URL. Include the exact URL and the time of your test.
  4. Request the page again while logged out. If response headers identify a cache hit, an age value or a proxy, record them for the host rather than repeatedly saving the editor.

Do not disable production caching as a first response. A temporary bypass can help isolate the cause, but permanent configuration changes can increase server load and alter logged-in, mobile or cookie-based behavior.

CDN and static-asset caches

A CDN can cache files independently from page HTML. This explains a common pattern: the new text appears, but the old colors, layout, script behavior or image remains. CSS, JavaScript, images and theme files may each have their own edge copy.

Purge narrowly, then widen

  1. Identify the exact asset URL in the page source or Network panel. Note its hostname, path and filename.
  2. Purge that URL or path at the CDN if the control supports selective invalidation.
  3. If a template or shared stylesheet changed, purge the related asset paths and the affected HTML URL.
  4. Use a full CDN purge only when many paths changed or selective invalidation is unavailable. Expect different edge locations to update at different times.
  5. Retest from a private window and, when practical, a second network. A private window removes browser state but does not guarantee that every edge has refreshed.

Do not rename files or append random query strings as a substitute for understanding the cache policy. Versioned asset filenames can be useful for future deployments, but an old HTML document can still point visitors to the old filename until its own cache is purged.

Make sure you edited the page that is actually rendered

An unchanged page is not always a cache problem. WordPress can render a different object, template or site from the one you edited.

Check the site and URL

  • Compare the editor’s site address with the public domain, protocol and subdomain. A staging site, development URL or alternate domain may be receiving your edits while production remains unchanged.
  • Check the Settings pages for the site address and WordPress address, and verify that redirects are not sending the browser to another installation.
  • Confirm the front-page setting. A page titled “Home” may not be the page assigned as the static front page, and a theme may render a custom homepage template instead.

Check the template and theme

  • Identify the template assigned to the page and confirm that the active theme uses it. Editing a file in an inactive theme cannot change the live output.
  • For block themes, inspect the Site Editor’s template and template parts, not only the page content. A header, footer or archive may be controlled there.
  • For classic themes, verify the relevant template hierarchy file and child-theme override. An edited default-theme file may be replaced by an update or ignored by a child theme.

Check uploads and duplicates

  • Confirm that the image, video thumbnail or downloadable file in the editor is the one referenced on the public page. Duplicate filenames and resized derivatives can look nearly identical.
  • View the media URL directly. If it is old there too, the asset or CDN cache is the likely layer; if it is new directly but old inside the page, inspect the page HTML and image URL.
  • Search for duplicate pages or posts with similar titles, especially when a menu link, custom query or archive—not the page you edited—supplies the visible content.

Use the browser to identify the stale response

Developer tools can show whether the old content comes from HTML, an asset, a redirect or an error.

Inspect page source

  1. Open “View page source” for the public URL, not only the live DOM inspector.
  2. Search for the new test text, the old text and the stylesheet or script filename you changed.
  3. If the old text is in the source, an HTML cache, wrong page, wrong template or server-side rendering path is involved. If the text is new but styling is old, inspect the linked CSS and its response.

Inspect Network and Console

  1. Open developer tools, select the Network panel, enable the option to preserve logs, and reload the page.
  2. Filter for “Doc” or the document request. Record its status, response headers, redirect chain and whether the response is marked from memory or disk cache.
  3. Filter for CSS, JS, Img and Font requests. Look for 304 validation responses, 404 or 403 errors, blocked mixed-content requests, and filenames that do not match your current build.
  4. Open the Console panel. A JavaScript error can stop a menu, interactive block or client-side style from applying even when the HTML is current.

Browser caching and object caching are distinct mechanisms and may require separate handling. WordPress’s cache handbook describes these layers and their different effects: WordPress cache handbook.

When purging does not fix it: isolate code and server failures

If the source still contains the old output after the correct caches are purged, treat the problem as a rendering or deployment failure rather than repeatedly clearing caches.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plugin conflict

A plugin can override a template, rewrite content, defer a script or return a cached response. Follow WordPress’s troubleshooting approach: deactivate plugins one at a time, test the public URL, and reactivate each one after the conflicting component is identified. If you cannot risk changing production, reproduce the test in a staging copy. The common-errors handbook covers plugin-related failures and recovery practices: WordPress common errors.

Theme compatibility

Switching temporarily to a standard theme can show whether the active theme or child-theme override is responsible. Record the current theme, customizer settings and widgets before switching. If the change appears under the test theme, inspect the active theme’s template hierarchy, hooks and generated stylesheet rather than leaving the production site on the temporary theme.

PHP version, memory and fatal errors

An incompatible PHP version, exhausted memory limit or fatal error can prevent a new template or plugin code from running. Check the host’s PHP error log and WordPress debug log, and look for an error timestamp matching your test. Increase memory only within the host’s supported limits and fix the failing code; hiding errors does not make the new output render.

Missing or corrupted files

A failed deployment can leave a stylesheet, script or template partially uploaded. Compare the expected file path with the Network request, restore the file from a known-good package or reinstall the affected component, then purge the relevant caches. WordPress’s troubleshooting FAQ lists file, plugin, theme and configuration checks: WordPress troubleshooting FAQ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

CSS changes that do not appear

CSS failures deserve a separate path because HTML and styles commonly have different cache lifetimes.

  1. Inspect the element and identify which rule wins. A more specific selector, inline style or later stylesheet may override your edit.
  2. Open the stylesheet URL shown in the Network panel directly and search for the new rule. If it is absent, regenerate the theme or builder CSS and verify that you edited the file actually loaded by the page.
  3. If the rule is present but crossed out, fix specificity, order or media-query conditions. Test at the viewport width where the visitor sees the problem.
  4. If the rule is present and active but the page is unchanged, check for a browser or CDN copy of the stylesheet, a service worker, or a JavaScript class that applies a competing style.
  5. Purge the stylesheet’s CDN path and the page HTML after regeneration. Then retest logged out.

WordPress’s optimization guidance explains why static assets can be cached separately and why invalidating the asset as well as the document matters: WordPress optimization handbook.

Common symptoms and the shortest reliable branch

Symptom Most useful check Likely next step
Only your normal browser shows the old page Private-window test Clear that site’s browser data or hard-refresh
Everyone sees old text, including private windows View source and response headers Purge page, host/reverse-proxy and CDN HTML caches; verify URL and template
Text is new but colors or spacing are old Network panel for CSS Regenerate CSS, inspect the loaded stylesheet, then purge its CDN and browser copies
Images remain old while text is new Open the image URL directly Verify the selected upload and purge the image path at the CDN or host
Logged-in users see new content but visitors do not Test logged out and compare cookies Purge the anonymous page cache and check separate mobile or cookie variants
Nothing changes after every purge Check source, console and PHP logs Investigate wrong template, plugin/theme conflict, PHP, memory or missing files

Prevent the next stale deployment

  • Document every cache layer: plugin, host, reverse proxy, CDN and object cache, including who can purge each one.
  • Use a repeatable release order: publish, regenerate builder assets, purge WordPress, purge host or proxy, purge affected CDN paths, then test logged out.
  • Prefer selective URL or asset invalidation for small edits and reserve full-site purges for shared templates or broad changes.
  • Use versioned filenames for intentionally changed static assets when your build system supports them, while still invalidating cached HTML that references the old files.
  • Keep a staging environment for theme and plugin changes, and record the active theme, PHP version and cache settings before troubleshooting production.
  • After each release, test a page, a stylesheet, an image and a logged-out mobile-sized view. Save the public URLs and expected markers so a stale response is obvious.

For a broader cache model and terminology, consult the WordPress performance documentation: cache handbook and optimization handbook. The practical rule is simple: prove which layer delivered the old bytes, invalidate that layer at the narrowest safe scope, and only then change code or server configuration.
