How to Set a Raspberry Pi to Reboot Automatically if Its FFmpeg YouTube Stream Hangs

A Raspberry Pi hardware watchdog is not a YouTube stream monitor. Use FFmpeg reconnects, a systemd restart policy, and a separate progress monitor for distinct failure states.

Short answer: don’t rely on one watchdog setting to fix every stream failure. Configure FFmpeg to retry the connection errors it supports, run it as a systemd service that restarts if it exits, and use a separate health monitor to detect when FFmpeg stays alive but stops making progress. Have that monitor restart FFmpeg first; make it reboot the whole Raspberry Pi only if that is the recovery policy you actually want. The Pi’s hardware watchdog is a separate layer for operating-system hangs, not a YouTube-stream checker.

First decide what “the stream hangs” means

Different failure states need different signals. A dropped connection, an exited FFmpeg process, and an alive-but-stalled process are not interchangeable. A stream can also be sending data without the available local checks proving that YouTube is receiving and displaying a healthy live stream.

Failure Useful detection or recovery layer What it does not establish
A supported connection or protocol error FFmpeg reconnect options, for the relevant protocol and error type That every output stall is detectable, or that YouTube is displaying the stream
FFmpeg exits A systemd service restart policy That a still-running but stuck FFmpeg process will be restarted
FFmpeg remains alive but makes no expected progress A separate monitor that checks an explicit progress signal and restarts the service That the Pi operating system itself is hung
The operating system stops servicing the hardware watchdog The Raspberry Pi hardware watchdog, configured for the particular Pi and OS That FFmpeg has stopped sending frames or the YouTube stream is healthy

Set up recovery in layers

1. Configure only applicable FFmpeg reconnect options

FFmpeg documents options including reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, and reconnect_streamed, along with retry and delay controls such as reconnect_max_retries, reconnect_delay_max, and reconnect_delay_total_max. Their applicability depends on the input or output protocol, installed FFmpeg version, and build. Check the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation and your local FFmpeg build before adding options to a command.

Reconnect behavior can help with the connection errors those options cover. It is not a general test of output progress and does not confirm that YouTube has a healthy live stream.

2. Run FFmpeg as a systemd service

Put your actual FFmpeg command in a service manager so it can start at boot and be restarted if the process exits. A Restart=always policy is one possible service setting, but a restart-on-exit policy cannot, by itself, catch an FFmpeg process that is still running and stuck. A Raspberry Pi forum post illustrates a service-plus-watchdog approach; it is an anecdotal example, not universal or official configuration guidance: Raspberry Pi Forums example.

There is no safe universal unit file to copy without knowing your Pi model, Raspberry Pi OS release, FFmpeg command, and stream-health definition. Keep the stream key out of public scripts, forum posts, and logs; use permissions appropriate to your system.

3. Monitor progress, not just whether FFmpeg exists

Configure FFmpeg to emit progress in a form your monitor can read, then have the monitor check whether meaningful progress is arriving. Choose a missed-progress timeout that allows for normal network jitter and for the cadence of the progress output you configured. A quiet log is not evidence of a hang unless you have configured output that should be regular.

When the deadline is missed, the least disruptive action is usually to restart the FFmpeg service. If your explicit policy is to reboot the Pi, the monitor can request a privileged reboot action instead. The Raspberry Pi getting-started documentation lists sudo reboot as a command-line reboot action: Raspberry Pi getting-started documentation. Automation permissions, service ordering, and safe shutdown behavior depend on your system configuration.

Add a cooldown or failure limit so a persistent camera, network, or configuration fault cannot trigger an endless reboot loop. The exact threshold is deployment-specific; it should reflect how often progress is expected and how much interruption is acceptable.

4. Use the hardware watchdog for OS-level hangs

Raspberry Pi’s boot configuration documentation describes kernel_watchdog_timeout: a nonzero value enables a hardware watchdog timer passed to the operating system at boot. If the OS does not service it regularly, the device resets after the timeout. Ongoing servicing is typically controlled by systemd’s RuntimeWatchdogSec. The documentation says Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm does not enable RuntimeWatchdogSec by default and that it must be configured in /etc/systemd/system.conf before the firmware kernel watchdog can be used. These details are not a blanket configuration for every Pi model or OS release; check the current Raspberry Pi boot configuration documentation for model and handover limitations.

This watchdog is for recovery when the operating system stops servicing it. It does not know whether FFmpeg is delivering frames to YouTube. The bootloader watchdog is different again: it covers failure to start the OS within its timeout, and is cancelled once the Arm CPU starts. Neither should be treated as an application-level stream monitor.

Test the recovery path before depending on it

  1. Check the inputs: record the Pi model, OS release, FFmpeg version and build, exact command, and which progress signal the monitor will evaluate.
  2. Check service behavior: confirm the unit starts at boot and observe what happens when FFmpeg exits normally or with an error. Review service logs.
  3. Simulate a controlled interruption: interrupt the connection or stop the test process in a controlled setting, then verify that the intended layer responds without an unintended reboot loop.
  4. Verify at YouTube: check the actual YouTube-side live result after recovery. Local process status or FFmpeg progress alone does not establish that viewers see a healthy stream.

Common failure modes

  • The service restarts only after FFmpeg exits, but the stream remains stalled. Add a separate progress monitor; a process-exit policy cannot identify an alive process that has stopped progressing.
  • Reconnect flags have no effect. Confirm the option applies to the protocol and error type involved and is supported by your installed FFmpeg version and build.
  • The Pi reboots repeatedly. A persistent upstream fault or an overly aggressive progress deadline may be retriggering recovery. Add a cooldown or failure limit and inspect service and monitor logs before increasing the recovery action.
  • The hardware watchdog does not reset the Pi as expected. Check the model-specific firmware/kernel handover, OS release, watchdog timeout, and systemd servicing configuration. On Bookworm, RuntimeWatchdogSec is not enabled by default according to Raspberry Pi’s documentation.
  • The monitor reports a hang during an ordinary quiet period. Ensure FFmpeg is configured to emit regular progress and set the deadline with normal jitter and that output cadence in mind.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is simply to keep uploaded video running on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo avoids keeping a Raspberry Pi or home connection on. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. It does not stream from a camera.
