To remove the Epic Games Launcher’s download cap, open Settings, scroll to Download Settings, clear Limit Download Speeds, and restart the Launcher before trying again. If you want to preserve bandwidth for other devices, leave the control enabled and set an intentional limit through Download Manager. Removing the checkbox only removes a Launcher-imposed constraint; it cannot overcome an ISP limit, weak Wi-Fi, an Epic service problem, or a disk that is busy installing files.
What the Epic download limit controls
Limit Download Speeds is an Epic Games Launcher setting. When enabled, it restricts how quickly the Launcher transfers game installations and updates. When disabled, the Launcher can use the connection’s available capacity, subject to your internet service, local network, Epic’s servers, and the speed at which your storage can write and install files.

Epic’s support guidance deliberately says removing the limit may help slow downloads. It does not publish a guaranteed improvement, a maximum rate, or a recommended cap value. A download that remains slow after the checkbox is cleared therefore needs broader diagnosis rather than repeated changes to the same setting.

| Launcher choice | When it makes sense | What it can and cannot do |
|---|---|---|
| Limit disabled | You want the Launcher to use as much available bandwidth as possible. | Removes the configured Launcher constraint, but does not increase your internet plan, repair Wi-Fi, bypass service congestion, or speed up disk installation. |
| Limit enabled | Other people, devices, calls, streaming, or online games need predictable bandwidth while a download runs. | Constrains Launcher transfer speed. Epic does not specify a universally correct number, so the value must reflect your own connection and competing traffic. |
Turn off the download speed limit
The labels are stable even though Epic support renderings have shown slightly different descriptions for the top-right control. Depending on your Launcher build, begin with the settings icon near your profile or open the profile menu and then choose Settings.

- Open the Epic Games Launcher.
- Use the top-right controls to open Settings.
- Scroll to the Download Settings section.
- Clear the checkbox labeled Limit Download Speeds.
- Close and restart the Epic Games Launcher.
- Start the game download or update again and watch its transfer and disk activity.
Restarting is part of Epic’s procedure, not an optional cleanup step. The Launcher should be fully closed and opened again so the changed setting is applied to a new session. If another download is already in progress, stop it before restarting when the interface offers that choice; otherwise you risk interpreting a partially completed job as a test of the new setting.
If the checkbox is already clear
A clear checkbox means the Launcher is not applying that particular cap. Do not assume it proves the network is healthy. Continue with the status, connection, cache, DNS, proxy, and disk checks below, especially if the transfer rate remains low after a restart.
Set a deliberate limit from Download Manager
Download Manager provides a second route to the same family of controls and is useful when the goal is bandwidth management rather than maximum throughput.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Open Download Manager from the bottom-left area of the Epic Games Launcher.
- Select Download Settings.
- Under the download-speed controls, enable the option to limit download speeds.
- Enter the cap that fits the bandwidth you want the Launcher to reserve for other activity.
- Apply the change and observe whether calls, streaming, work traffic, or other devices remain responsive.
Epic does not recommend a single number because the appropriate cap depends on your connection, household use, and whether you are limiting fresh installs, updates, or both. A very low value lengthens the installation; a high value may still interfere with other traffic. Treat the setting as a deliberate trade-off, not as a speed optimization.
Download Manager controls beyond speed
The manager can also help you coordinate several large downloads. Depending on the current Launcher interface, you can prioritize titles, reorder queued downloads, schedule automatic updates, choose whether games may update while you are playing, configure completion notifications, change the default installation directory, view current and recent status, and inspect download history for the previous 14 days. These controls organize work; their presence does not indicate that a speed cap is active.

Fix the IS-INFO-THROTTLED message
Epic identifies IS-INFO-THROTTLED as a sign that a download throttle was selected previously. In Download Manager, open Download Settings, find the Download Speed area, and clear Limit download speeds. Then restart the Launcher and retry the download, following the same restart requirement used when changing the setting from the main Settings page.
If the message disappears but the transfer remains slow, the throttle was only one possible cause. Use the diagnostic sequence below instead of repeatedly toggling the checkbox.

Epic’s troubleshooting guidance is a checklist of possible causes, not a promise that every step increases speed. Work from service and configuration checks to connection and storage checks so that each result narrows the problem.
1. Check Epic’s service status
Open Epic’s official status page and look for incidents affecting the Epic Games Store, downloads, content delivery, or account services. A service-side incident can reduce performance even when your setting is correct. If an incident is active, changing DNS, buying a cable, or clearing a cache will not restore normal capacity; retry after the service report changes.
2. Confirm the Launcher cap is not the active constraint
Use the Settings path above or the Download Manager path to inspect the checkbox. If it was enabled, clear it, restart the Launcher, and test a new transfer. If it was already disabled, record that result and move on rather than treating the control as the explanation for every slowdown.

3. Read a zero on the speed graph correctly
A displayed transfer rate of zero does not automatically mean the internet connection stopped. Epic explains that, after files arrive, the Launcher can pause downloading while it installs those files to disk; the pause depends on disk speed. Inspect the graph’s read and write portions:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- A period with strong disk-write activity and little network transfer can indicate that already-downloaded data is being installed.
- Downloading may resume after the write operation completes.
- If both network and disk activity stay inactive for an unusually long period, continue with the service, connection, and configuration checks rather than assuming a normal installation pause.
This distinction matters on slower hard drives, busy storage, or systems handling other disk-heavy tasks. A faster internet connection cannot make a disk write complete instantly.
4. Test a wired connection
If your computer and router have Ethernet ports, connect them with an Ethernet cable and retry. Epic lists wired Ethernet as a troubleshooting option because it removes Wi-Fi signal quality, radio interference, and some wireless congestion from the test. The cable is optional and is not a guaranteed fix: it cannot correct an Epic service incident, a disk-writing pause, an ISP limit, or every fault between your home and the internet.
5. Try another internet connection
When available, test from a different connection, such as a trusted wired network or a separate hotspot. Compare behavior rather than assuming the second connection is faster. If the Launcher performs normally elsewhere, the original router, Wi-Fi environment, ISP route, or local policy becomes more likely. If both connections behave the same way, storage, the Launcher, or Epic’s service may be involved.
6. Clear the device cache
Epic includes clearing the device cache in its slow-download checklist. Use the cache-clearing procedure appropriate to your operating system and Launcher installation, then reopen the Launcher and test again. Cache clearing can remove stale local data, but it does not raise the bandwidth available from your service or guarantee a faster download. Avoid deleting game installation files unless Epic’s instructions for your platform specifically require it.

7. Check that Epic domains are allowed
Security software, firewalls, DNS filters, and managed networks can block or interfere with content delivery. Confirm that the Epic domains required by the Launcher are whitelisted in the relevant security or network tools. The exact allow-list depends on the product and network, so add only the domains Epic identifies in its current support guidance and follow your organization’s security policy. A whitelist change should be tested by retrying the same download, not judged from a speed graph alone.
8. Flush DNS or test a public DNS resolver
Epic recommends flushing DNS or switching to a public DNS service as diagnostic options. DNS changes affect how names are resolved; they do not add bandwidth. Flush the resolver cache using your operating system’s supported network command, or temporarily test a reputable public resolver if your network administrator permits it. Record the original DNS configuration so you can restore it if the test has no effect or causes problems with local services.
9. Disable proxy servers for a controlled test
A proxy can add routing, authentication, or filtering that affects Launcher traffic. Temporarily disable a manually configured proxy, then retry while observing whether the behavior changes. Do this only when you understand how the proxy is used; managed work or school networks may require it. Restore the setting after the test if the network depends on it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use the graph and history to identify the bottleneck
Do not evaluate performance from one momentary number. Let the transfer run long enough to show a pattern, then compare network activity with disk read/write activity and the queue status in Download Manager.
| Observed pattern | More likely explanation | Next useful check |
|---|---|---|
| Network activity is consistently low while the limit is enabled. | The Launcher cap may be constraining the transfer. | Clear the limit, restart the Launcher, and repeat the test. |
| Network activity drops to zero while disk writes rise. | The Launcher is installing downloaded files. | Wait for the write phase; check whether downloading resumes afterward. |
| Several downloads are queued behind one active title. | Queue order or prioritization is controlling what appears to be slow. | Review Download Manager priority and reorder settings. |
| Performance changes sharply between Wi-Fi and Ethernet. | Wireless signal, interference, or local congestion is involved. | Use the more stable connection and investigate the Wi-Fi environment. |
| Multiple connections are slow and Epic reports an incident. | A service-side issue is plausible. | Monitor the status page and retry after service recovery. |
| The Launcher is slow on one connection but normal on another. | The original network, route, DNS, proxy, or ISP is more suspect. | Test DNS, proxy, router, and ISP conditions on the affected connection. |
Download history covering the previous 14 days can help you compare a current transfer with recent behavior, but it is not a benchmark. File size, update contents, server load, disk work, and other traffic can differ between two downloads.

Common mistakes when changing the limit
- Skipping the restart: clearing the checkbox and immediately judging an existing transfer can leave you testing the old session.
- Confusing a disk pause with a network failure: a zero graph during heavy writes can be normal installation work.
- Expecting a cap removal to create speed: it removes one constraint; it cannot exceed the capacity of the connection or storage.
- Setting an arbitrary “fast” cap: Epic publishes no universal recommended value. Choose a limit based on the bandwidth other activities need.
- Changing several network settings at once: if you alter DNS, proxy, Wi-Fi, and cache settings simultaneously, you cannot tell which change mattered. Test one category at a time and record the result.
- Assuming Download Manager features prove throttling: scheduling, queue order, notifications, and history are management tools, not evidence that the speed limit is enabled.
When to stop troubleshooting locally
Escalate or wait when the cap is disabled, the Launcher has been restarted, the graph shows no disk-writing explanation, and the same slowdown appears across a stable wired or alternate connection. At that point, check Epic’s service status again and consult Epic Games Store support with the affected title, approximate time, connection type, operating system, and the steps already tested. Those details help separate an account or service issue from a local network problem without implying that one setting will fix every case.
Practical decision guide
Choose no limit when throughput is the priority
Clear Limit Download Speeds, restart the Launcher, and let the transfer use available capacity. This is appropriate when no other traffic needs protection and your network and storage can keep up. Watch the disk portion of the graph so you do not mistake installation work for a stalled connection.
Choose a limit when other traffic matters
Enable the control in Download Manager and set a value that leaves enough capacity for calls, streaming, work, or other players. Revisit the value when the household’s usage changes. The cost is a longer download; the benefit is more predictable bandwidth for everything else.
Choose diagnosis instead of another setting change
If the checkbox is already clear, a restart made no difference, or the speed graph aligns with disk writes, investigate service status, connection type, alternate networks, cache, domain allow-lists, DNS, and proxies. The official guidance does not establish a typical percentage improvement after removing the cap, so a measured result from your own connection is more useful than a promised number.
