A value of 0 permits third person. Players can remain in first person or press the perspective key to switch between the two views.
disable3rdPerson = 1;
A value of 1 disables third person for everyone connected to that server. The server is therefore first-person-only, regardless of a player’s keybind or client preference.
#1 Best Overall
- Use any means necessary to survive a hostile open world for as long as possible.
- Explore the authentic open world of Chernarus, featuring 230 square kilometers of hand-crafted terrain based on real-life locations.
- Become immersed in a tense, emotional experience driven by the emergent interactions of 60 players on a single server, each one fighting for survival.
- Experience a wide variety of complex survival mechanics, from hunting and crafting, through to sophisticated injury simulation and transferable diseases.
- Survive against environmental dangers, including the infected, dynamic weather, and animal predators.
The parameter is a 0/1 toggle documented in Bohemia Interactive’s DayZ server configuration comments. It is independent of other rules such as the crosshair or night-lighting configuration. Do not change those related parameters unless you intend to alter those mechanics as well.
Choose the ruleset before editing
| Server ruleset | Value | Can players switch views? | Typical browser indication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mixed perspective | disable3rdPerson = 0; |
Yes. Enter switches between first and third person by default. | A person icon or perspective tag indicates that third person is allowed. |
| First-person-only | disable3rdPerson = 1; |
No. Enter cannot enable third person. | The third-person icon or tag is absent. |
Mixed perspective gives players the standard choice, including the ability to look around a character without exposing the character’s body to the camera. First-person-only rules remove third-person peeking and make every player use the same viewpoint. Decide which experience you want before changing the file, because the switch affects all players on that server.
Find the server configuration file that is actually loaded
For a self-managed dedicated server, the relevant file is normally named serverDZ.cfg. The important detail is not the filename alone but the path supplied to the server at launch. DayZ’s dedicated-server executable can be started with a -config parameter that points to the configuration file:
-config=pathtoserverDZ.cfg
Your installation may use a different absolute or relative path. Inspect the startup shortcut, batch file, service definition, or hosting control panel and identify the file named by -config. If several copies of serverDZ.cfg exist, editing a copy that is not selected by -config has no effect.

Local dedicated server checklist
- Access to the machine or file transfer location where the dedicated server runs.
- Permission to edit the configuration file.
- The server’s startup command or service settings, so you can verify the
-configpath. - A planned restart window; the value is read when the server starts, not while a session is already running.
Set first- or third-person mode on a self-hosted server
- Stop the server cleanly. Shut down the DayZ server before editing its configuration. This prevents a running process or management script from rewriting the file while you work.
- Open the loaded configuration. Follow the path after the startup command’s
-configargument. Open that exactserverDZ.cfgin a plain-text editor. - Locate the perspective line. Search for
disable3rdPerson. A standard line includes a value and a semicolon. - Choose the value. Use
disable3rdPerson = 0;when third person should be available. Usedisable3rdPerson = 1;when the server must enforce first person. - Preserve the syntax. Keep the parameter name, equals sign, numeric value, and trailing semicolon. Do not add quotation marks around the number.
- Save the file in plain text. Keep the existing filename and extension. A text editor that silently changes the file to a different extension can leave the server reading the old file.
- Start the server again. Restart the DayZ dedicated-server process or its service so the launch configuration is read again.
- Reconnect and verify. Join the server after the restart, test the perspective key, and check the server-browser marker described below.
Correct examples
Allow both viewpoints:
disable3rdPerson = 0;
Force first person:
disable3rdPerson = 1;
These are complete configuration statements. A missing semicolon, misspelled parameter, or non-numeric value can prevent the intended setting from being recognized.
Change the setting on a rented or hosted server
Many game-server providers expose the same file through a web control panel instead of giving you direct access to the host filesystem. The labels differ by provider, but the workflow is consistent:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Stop the DayZ server from the provider’s control panel, or use its configuration editor if it supports safe live editing.
- Open the area usually called Configuration Files, Server Settings, or File Manager.
- Select the DayZ configuration file used by the instance. If the panel lists multiple files, confirm which one is assigned to the server’s
-configstartup option. - Find
disable3rdPersonand enter either0or1, retaining the equals sign and semicolon when the editor displays the full line. - Save the configuration using the panel’s save or apply control.
- Use the panel’s restart function. A page refresh or disconnecting your game client does not reload server configuration.
- Reconnect and perform the in-game and browser checks.
Host Havoc’s documented workflow places the file in its Configuration Files area, but the exact menu names and restart controls are provider-specific. If a panel regenerates configuration files automatically, use its editor rather than changing a local copy on your computer.
How players switch perspective
DayZ’s manual lists Enter as the default key for switching between first- and third-person perspective. The key works only when the server permits both views:
Rank #3
- Match based pvpve: climb up the ranks and stand your ground against the best players 20-40 minutes of playtime per session
- tactical sandbox: chose your own playing style and solve problems you encounter your way.
- open, highly replay able maps: use tools, tactics and a feature rich environment to turn the odds in your favour.
- High tension survival gameplay: fight over bounty against other hunter teams in a world full of challenging AI.
- High risk/ High rewards: gamble with your life. Earn rewards and upgrades vs. The fear of losing your character forever.
- On a server with
disable3rdPerson = 0;, pressing Enter changes the current player’s view. - On a server with
disable3rdPerson = 1;, pressing Enter cannot unlock third person. The server rule takes precedence over the player’s control setting.
Players may have changed their controls, so Enter is the default rather than a guarantee that every client still uses that key. The server administrator does not need to change a player keybind to enforce the rule; the server-side value is authoritative.
How the server communicates its perspective rule
DayZ’s server browser documents a person icon beside servers that allow third person. A first-person-only server does not display that icon. Some hosted-server panels and browser views also show a perspective tag. Encourage players to refresh the browser list after a restart if the marker appears stale.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The marker is a useful confirmation, but it should be paired with an in-game test. Join the server, press the player’s configured perspective key, and confirm that the resulting camera behavior matches the intended ruleset. If the icon and gameplay disagree, troubleshoot the loaded configuration path and restart state before changing unrelated settings.
Verify a change without guessing
Verification for a mixed-perspective server
- Confirm the file contains exactly
disable3rdPerson = 0;. - Confirm the server was restarted after the save.
- Look for the third-person person icon or perspective tag in the browser.
- Join the server and press Enter, or the client’s configured equivalent.
- Switch back to first person to ensure both directions work.
Verification for a first-person-only server
- Confirm the file contains exactly
disable3rdPerson = 1;. - Restart the server and reconnect rather than testing an old session.
- Check that the browser does not show the third-person icon or tag.
- Press Enter in game. The view should remain first person.
Testing both the browser marker and the actual camera catches the two most common mistakes: changing an unused file and forgetting to restart.

Troubleshoot when the perspective does not change
The old behavior remains after editing
First check the startup command. If -config points to another directory or filename, the server is loading that other file. Search the machine for duplicate serverDZ.cfg files, then compare each candidate with the path in the launch configuration. Edit the selected file, save it, and restart the server.
The server starts but ignores the line
Check spelling and punctuation character by character. The valid statements are:
disable3rdPerson = 0;disable3rdPerson = 1;
Use a numeric 0 or 1, not a word such as true or false. Keep the semicolon. Remove accidental quotation marks or extra characters introduced by a rich-text editor.
The setting worked only after several minutes
A player reconnecting does not reload server configuration. The dedicated-server process must be restarted. On a hosted service, use the provider’s restart control and wait for the instance to report that it is running before reconnecting.

A hosted panel keeps restoring the previous value
Make the change in the provider’s configuration editor, not in a downloaded or local copy. Some panels write a generated file during startup; a manual edit to another location will be overwritten or ignored. If the panel has separate save and restart buttons, use both.

The browser marker is missing or unexpected
Refresh the server list after the restart and verify that you are looking at the correct server instance. Then compare the marker with an in-game test. The marker communicates the server’s advertised perspective rule; it does not make a client-side key override a first-person-only configuration.
Do not confuse perspective with other DayZ settings
disable3rdPerson controls third-person availability only. It does not enable or disable the crosshair, and it does not determine night-lighting behavior. Bohemia community configuration references list disableCrosshair and lightingConfig as separate settings.
- Change
disable3rdPersonwhen the goal is to allow or prohibit third-person camera use. - Change
disableCrosshaironly when the ruleset also requires a different crosshair policy. - Change
lightingConfigonly when the server’s night-lighting rules are meant to change.
Keeping these choices separate makes the server’s rules easier to explain and prevents an administrator from altering immersion settings while trying to change only the camera perspective.
Administrator checklist
- Decide between mixed perspective and first-person-only play.
- Identify the configuration file named by the server’s
-configstartup parameter. - Set
disable3rdPerson = 0;for third-person access ordisable3rdPerson = 1;to force first person. - Preserve the exact spelling, numeric value, and semicolon.
- Save the file in plain text and restart the dedicated server.
- Reconnect, test the perspective key, and inspect the browser icon or tag.
- On a hosted server, make the edit through the provider’s configuration editor and restart control.
- Leave
disableCrosshairandlightingConfigunchanged unless those rules are intentionally part of the server design.
Once the correct file has been edited and the server restarted, the single disable3rdPerson value is the complete control for first- versus third-person availability.
