Short answer: Windrose lists a Windows 10 64-bit system with an Intel Core i7-8700K or AMD Ryzen 7 2700X, 16 GB of RAM, a GeForce GTX 1080 Ti or Radeon RX 6800, and 30 GB of storage as its minimum. Its recommended tier moves to Windows 11 or later, an i7-10700 or Ryzen 7 5800X, 32 GB of RAM, an RTX 3080 or RX 6800 XT, and SSD storage. Use an SSD for both the game and server files, keep client and server builds identical after every patch, and leave memory and storage headroom when hosting for several players.

A dedicated server keeps a world available while its usual host is offline, but you become responsible for updates, configuration, backups, logs, and network access. The guidance below separates published requirements from observed storage behavior, then gives practical setup and troubleshooting steps without promising a universal frame-rate, tick-rate, or player-cap figure that has not been measured under controlled conditions.

Windrose hardware requirements at a glance

The official requirements page, accessed in 2026, describes the hardware needed to run the game. It does not publish a separate, reproducible benchmark for dedicated-server tick rate, maximum players, CPU utilization, or latency. Treat the table as a baseline for the machine running the game and any local server components, not as a guarantee of a particular multiplayer performance level.

Component Minimum listed requirement Recommended listed requirement How to interpret it for hosting
Operating system Windows 10 64-bit Windows 11 or later The official dedicated-server instructions are Windows-oriented. Alternative operating systems are not established by the available documentation.
CPU Intel Core i7-8700K or AMD Ryzen 7 2700X Intel Core i7-10700 or AMD Ryzen 7 5800X These are game requirements. A host sharing the machine with the game, voice chat, backups, or other services benefits from additional cores and headroom.
Memory 16 GB RAM 32 GB RAM The requirements page notes that self-hosting needs memory beyond the listed solo/co-op baseline. The exact amount depends on world and player load, so monitor usage rather than relying on a fixed number.
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti or AMD Radeon RX 6800 NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 or AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT This is primarily a client-rendering requirement. A headless server GPU requirement is not separately specified.
Storage capacity 30 GB available SSD storage required in the recommended tier Reserve additional free space for saves, logs, updates, temporary files, and backups. Capacity alone does not describe storage speed.

The page says, “An SSD is strongly recommended for the best experience.” That recommendation matters even when the game fits comfortably inside 30 GB: world saves, streaming data, patching, and server files can create frequent reads and writes. The same documentation says ongoing optimizations will continue to improve performance across a wide range of hardware during development, so requirements and behavior can change with patches.

Why an SSD matters more than the 30 GB figure

Think of 30 GB as free-space capacity, not a performance target. A nearly full or slow drive can produce longer loads, delayed world updates, and contention between the game, server process, operating-system paging, and backups. Install the game and dedicated-server files on an SSD, keep meaningful free capacity, and store active save data on the fastest reliable volume available.

Reported Windrose storage activity

Tom’s Hardware reported sustained Windrose read/write activity of roughly 15–30 MB/s in observed gameplay scenarios in 2026. At the upper end, 30 MB/s multiplied over an hour is approximately 108 GB written. That is a calculation from the reported rate, not an official universal benchmark or a promise that every build writes that much.

The same report described lower activity after patch 0.10.0.4: about 10–16 MB/s while active and below 1 MB/s while the character was stationary. The report attributed those measurements to Pixel Operative and characterized them as a 60–75% improvement. Your version, world, movement, background tasks, and storage layout can produce different results.

Choosing storage without overclaiming a model

If you need a practical search category, look for a 1TB NVMe SSD. This gives room beyond the nominal game requirement for server files, several generations of saves, logs, and local backups. It is a category suggestion, not a tested model recommendation: the available evidence does not establish a particular brand, controller, endurance rating, or benchmark result.

What a dedicated Windrose server changes

A dedicated server runs the world independently of the player who normally hosts. Friends can join while that player is offline, provided the server machine remains powered on and reachable. The official guide supports launching copied server files or installing the free Steam Dedicated Server application.

This convenience adds operational work:

  • Version control: the server must be updated with the game. The official guide warns that client/server mismatches may cause bugs.
  • Configuration: player limits, passwords, names, world presets, and individual world settings live in documented JSON files.
  • Data protection: the world is persistent, so an operator must schedule and verify backups.
  • Connectivity: players need a valid invite code or another supported connection path, and the host must keep the service reachable.
  • Diagnostics: crashes, failed joins, and startup problems are yours to investigate through console output and logs.

Self-hosting versus managed hosting

Neither choice is automatically faster. Hardware quality, storage latency, internet routing, player count, and maintenance discipline matter more than the label on the service. Use this comparison to match the operational model to your group.

Decision factor Self-hosted machine Managed Windrose hosting
Control Direct access to files, launch scripts, JSON settings, logs, and the operating system. Provider controls the underlying machine; you normally use a panel or support channel for settings and files.
Maintenance You handle game updates, server updates, backups, Windows maintenance, storage health, and recovery. The provider takes on much of the machine maintenance, while you still need to manage world data and version-sensitive settings.
Always-on availability Available whenever your hardware, power, and internet connection remain online. Designed for continuous operation without leaving a personal PC running.
Cost Uses hardware, electricity, bandwidth, and your time; there is no verified universal total. Uses a recurring fee. Current plan prices, regions, and availability were not established here and must be checked with the provider.
Operating-system compatibility Official instructions are Windows-oriented, so you can follow the documented path directly. Confirm that the provider supports the current Windrose server build and required features before subscribing.
Troubleshooting You can inspect every log and process, but diagnosis and repair are your responsibility. Support may handle infrastructure issues, but restricted access can make unusual configuration problems harder to inspect.

Choose self-hosting when you want file-level control, already own suitable Windows hardware, and are comfortable maintaining it. Choose managed hosting when reliable availability and reduced machine administration are worth a recurring charge. Ask any provider about current Windrose support, data-center region, backup policy, player-limit controls, and patch timing before committing; availability and pricing can change between updates.

  1. Prepare the machine. Use a supported 64-bit Windows installation, install the latest game files and the dedicated-server files, and place them on an SSD with free space for saves and backups.
  2. Copy or install the server. You can use copied server files or the free Steam Dedicated Server application documented by the guide. Keep the installation in a folder you can back up and access easily.
  3. Launch in the foreground. Run StartServerForeground.bat. Keeping the console open leaves startup messages and errors visible instead of hiding them behind a background process.
  4. Record the invite code. The server prints an invite code in the console. You can also read it from R5ServerDescription.json. Share the code only with the players you intend to admit.
  5. Join from the game. Players use the game’s Connect to Server flow and enter the invite code. If a join fails, keep the server console visible while reproducing the attempt.
  6. Stop safely for maintenance. Shut down the process cleanly before copying saves or changing files. Abrupt power loss can leave a world in an inconsistent state.

Configure the world and access rules

Advanced operation uses two documented files: ServerDescription.json and WorldDescription.json. Make a backup copy before editing either file, change one setting at a time, and retain the original so you can roll back a malformed value.

ServerDescription.json controls

  • Invite code
  • Password protection and the password itself
  • Server name
  • Maximum player count
  • World name

WorldDescription.json controls

  • Preset difficulty
  • Individual world settings exposed by the game

Do not assume that raising the maximum player count is free. More players and more complex worlds can increase CPU, memory, and storage pressure, but the available documentation does not publish a universal player-to-hardware formula or a guaranteed tick-rate threshold. Increase load gradually while watching the machine.

Use SteamCMD for headless or automated operation

SteamCMD is supported for remote, headless, and automated deployments. The official instructions document the following sequence:

app_update 4129620 validate

Replace <server-install-directory> with the directory you intend to use. The validate option checks the installed files; it does not replace the need for a world backup. After installation or an update, start the server and inspect the console for errors before allowing players to connect.

Optimization steps that are supported by the evidence

1. Establish a clean baseline

Before changing settings, note the client and server version, active player count, world name, free SSD space, RAM usage, CPU utilization, and whether the lag is local or affects every player. A repeatable symptom is more useful than a general feeling that the server is slow.

2. Meet the published baseline first

Do not begin with obscure configuration tweaks if the machine is below the listed CPU, memory, operating-system, or storage requirements. A host running both the game and server should have memory beyond the 16 GB minimum; the documentation does not state a single extra amount, so leave practical headroom and measure during the busiest period.

3. Remove storage contention

Move active game and server files to the SSD, avoid running large downloads or disk-heavy scans during play, and keep backups from monopolizing the same drive at peak hours. If activity resembles the reported 15–30 MB/s pattern, check whether another process is competing for the drive before blaming the network.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Keep versions aligned

When a patch is released, update the dedicated server and clients together. The official guide specifically warns that a mismatch may cause bugs. Record the old version, back up R5Saved, update, launch once, and verify that the world loads before inviting the group.

  • KEEP YOUR DRIVE UPDATED. Monitor your SSD’s performance and check for updates with the downloadable SANDISK Dashboard application.[5]

5. Tune load conservatively

Use the JSON settings to set a realistic maximum player count and world options. Add players in stages, then monitor memory, CPU, storage activity, and disconnects. There is no published number that guarantees smooth operation for a given count, GPU, or processor.

6. Keep logs available while diagnosing

Use StartServerForeground.bat during troubleshooting so startup and connection errors remain visible. Capture the timestamp, player count, and action that preceded a failure. This distinguishes a crash, a rejected connection, a version mismatch, and a performance stall.

Diagnose common lag and connection problems

Everyone experiences pauses or delayed world updates

  • Check whether CPU, RAM, or SSD utilization spikes at the same time.
  • Confirm the active world and server files are on the SSD.
  • Pause scheduled backups, downloads, indexing, or antivirus scans briefly to identify storage contention; restore protection and scheduling afterward.
  • Reduce player count or demanding world settings temporarily. If the symptom disappears, reintroduce load gradually.

Only one player reports lag

  • Compare that player’s latency and route with another player in the same session.
  • Check local Wi-Fi, VPN, downloads, and packet loss before changing server hardware.
  • If the server console shows no CPU, memory, or storage spike, the issue may be on the player’s connection rather than the world process.

Players cannot connect after an update

  1. Confirm the client and server show the same game version.
  2. Restart the server after updating; do not assume a running process loaded new files.
  3. Run the documented SteamCMD update with app_update 4129620 validate if files may be incomplete.
  4. Read the invite code from the current console or R5ServerDescription.json and try the game’s Connect to Server flow again.

The server crashes during startup

  • Launch with StartServerForeground.bat and copy the visible error.
  • Restore the last known-good copies of ServerDescription.json and WorldDescription.json one at a time.
  • Verify installation files, then test with the backed-up world before returning to the live save.
  • Keep the R5Saved backup untouched until the corrected setup has loaded successfully.

Backups and patch-day procedure

A dedicated world is valuable because it persists independently of a host’s play session, which also makes its save data worth protecting. Use a simple rotation rather than overwriting one backup forever.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Stop the server cleanly.
  2. Copy R5Saved to a separate drive or remote destination with the date and server version in the folder name.
  3. Update the server files and validate them if using SteamCMD.
  4. Start the server in the foreground and confirm that the world, settings, password, and invite code behave as expected.
  5. Allow players back in only after that smoke test passes.

Keep at least one pre-update copy and periodically test restoring it. A backup that has never been opened is only an assumption.

What performance numbers you should—and should not—expect

Published requirements establish hardware tiers, not a guaranteed frame rate or server tick rate. No controlled source here supplies a reproducible FPS, latency, maximum-player, or CPU-utilization result for a specified configuration. Consequently, claims such as “this processor supports exactly X players” would be false precision.

Use measurements from your own world instead: record CPU and memory during the busiest scene, observe storage throughput and queueing, note disconnects by player, and compare behavior before and after one change. Storage observations from 2026 are useful context, especially the reported reduction after patch 0.10.0.4, but they are not a substitute for testing your build.

A practical upgrade order

  1. SSD first: install the game, server, and active saves on an SSD; add free capacity for backups.
  2. Memory next: move beyond the 16 GB minimum when the machine also runs the game, server, browser, voice chat, or backup jobs. The published recommendation is 32 GB.
  3. CPU after measurement: if CPU saturation coincides with world pauses while storage is healthy, move toward the recommended i7-10700 or Ryzen 7 5800X class rather than changing graphics hardware blindly.
  4. GPU for the player PC: the GTX 1080 Ti/RX 6800 minimum and RTX 3080/RX 6800 XT recommended tiers primarily affect client rendering. A headless server GPU target is not separately documented.
  5. Network and power: ensure the machine remains online and stable for the always-on benefit of a dedicated server. A fast processor cannot compensate for an unreachable host.

Bottom line for a smooth Windrose server

Build around the recommended 32 GB of RAM, modern i7-10700/Ryzen 7 5800X-class CPU, and SSD storage when you can, while treating the published minimums as the floor rather than a multiplayer guarantee. Put the active files on an SSD, monitor real load, keep client and server versions synchronized, back up R5Saved before updates, and use the foreground launcher and documented JSON files when diagnosing problems. Self-hosting offers maximum control and visibility; managed hosting trades that access for less machine maintenance and a recurring fee whose current amount and availability must be verified directly.
