To stop gambling, use the operator’s self-exclusion control or register with GAMSTOP for exclusion from UK online gambling operators. The precise menu labels vary by site, and limits and self-exclusion do different jobs.
If gambling feels difficult to control, use the self-exclusion steps below and consider contacting the National Gambling Helpline: 0808 8020 133 in England and Scotland, or 0808 2819 265 in Wales. The Gambling Commission lists these numbers as available 24 hours a day, seven days a week; check its current guidance if you need support.
How to set a financial limit on a betting site
UK rules require remote gambling systems to offer accessible account-level financial limits from registration. The controls must be easy to find from the homepage and deposit pages. Since each operator chooses its own interface, treat the following as a general route, not an exact set of button names. See the Gambling Commission’s RTS 12 financial limits standard.
- Sign in to your account.
- Open Account, Safer gambling, Responsible gambling or a similarly named section. If you do not see it, search the site’s help pages for “financial limits.”
- Choose the financial-limit control and select the type of limit you want.
- Enter an amount and select a period. Read the operator’s definition of the limit before confirming; “deposit,” “loss,” “stake” and “net deposit” do not mean the same thing.
- Check that the amount and period are correct, then confirm. Look for an on-screen confirmation or a limit summary in your account.
Choose a limit by what it caps
- Deposit limit: caps gross deposits—the money paid into the account—over a selected period.
- Stake limit: caps how much you stake.
- Loss limit: caps losses, generally calculated from stakes less winnings or returns. Check the operator’s precise calculation.
- Net-deposit limit: takes withdrawals into account as well as deposits. Check how the operator calculates it.
These alternatives should not be described simply as deposit limits. The Commission says that from 30 June 2026, only a limit based solely on what a customer pays into the account over a set duration may be called a “deposit limit.” The change clarifies how the term is used; it does not make the different limit types interchangeable. See the Commission’s announcement on clearer online deposit limits.

Pick a period and understand overlapping limits
The required deposit-limit periods under the UK standard include 24 hours, seven days and one month. If you set limits for more than one period, the most restrictive applicable limit controls. The Commission illustrates this with a £10 daily limit and a £100 weekly limit: the daily setting permits no more than £10 a day, while the weekly setting permits no more than £70 in a seven-day period. That example explains how overlapping limits work; it is not a suggested budget.
Use your own account and transaction history alongside your personal budget to decide what setting is appropriate. UK operators must prompt active-account customers to review account and transaction information at least every six months, and provide reminders. When a limit is reached, the system must prevent further deposits until the period restarts or an increase request completes its cooling-off process.
What happens when you change a limit?
For UK-regulated online gambling, a customer-requested reduction must take effect immediately unless a technical failure prevents it. If a failure delays the change, the operator must tell you when it will take effect. An increase has a cooling-off period: you must request it, wait at least 24 hours, then take a further positive action to confirm after that period. These rules are set out in RTS 12.
That delay is intentional: it gives you time to reconsider rather than making it possible to raise a limit instantly. If you are trying to stop or reduce gambling, do not treat an increase as a quick way around a limit; consider using self-exclusion and getting support instead.

How to self-exclude from online betting
Self-exclusion is a formal agreement not to gamble, intended for people who recognize gambling is causing harm and want help stopping. UK operators must provide their own self-exclusion arrangements. You can exclude from an individual gambling business, or use GAMSTOP ONLINE to request exclusion from UK online operators. The Gambling Commission’s self-exclusion guidance explains operator duties; its GAMSTOP minimum-period information, updated 17 March 2026, says the exclusion period is at least six months.
Exclude from one operator
- Sign in and look in the account or safer-gambling section for Self-exclusion. If you cannot find the control, contact the operator and ask how to make a self-exclusion agreement.
- Choose the exclusion period offered and complete the operator’s requested steps. Read the terms carefully so you understand the duration and what products or accounts the agreement covers.
- Keep the confirmation. If the operator continues to send marketing or lets you gamble in breach of the agreement, report it to the business and, if appropriate, the Gambling Commission.
After an individual self-exclusion agreement, the operator must close the account, return funds held and remove your details from the marketing databases it uses. The Commission acknowledges that breaches can happen, so self-exclusion should be treated as a formal barrier—not a guarantee that every route to gambling is blocked.

Exclude from UK online operators with GAMSTOP
- Register through the official GAMSTOP service and follow its instructions for selecting an exclusion period.
- Enter accurate identifying details. Keep them current if you move, change your surname or change your email address; matching depends on the details you supply.
- Save the registration confirmation and use the service’s contact information if you need to update your details or have a question about your registration.
The Commission’s information on how GAMSTOP works says participating businesses update their lists every 24 hours. That page was last updated in 2021, so do not assume registration creates an instantaneous block. GAMSTOP covers UK online operators within its scheme; it does not establish that every gambling route or every operator worldwide is blocked.

Account controls and self-exclusion can be combined with other help. The Commission describes TalkBanStop as a combination of GamCare’s National Gambling Helpline support, free Gamban blocking software and GAMSTOP self-exclusion. Blocking software can add friction by restricting access to gambling sites, but it is a supplementary measure, not a guarantee or a replacement for exclusion and support. See the Commission’s pages on TalkBanStop and blocking software.

If you are in England or Scotland, the Commission lists the National Gambling Helpline at 0808 8020 133; in Wales, it lists 0808 2819 265. Both are listed as open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Contact the service if you feel unable to stop or need someone to talk to. If you are outside Great Britain, use your local gambling regulator or support service: the UK requirements and services here may not apply where you live.
How common are these tools?
Historical figures in the Department for Culture, Media and Sport’s 2023 gambling white paper are not a current national prevalence survey. It reported that 11% of online gamblers used financial limits, while 5% used time-outs and 6% used reality checks, drawing on UK Gambling Commission data. The paper also cited Patterns of Play research in which 21.5% of accounts had deposit limits set in the year studied, and an academic study reporting that 72.8% of deposit-limit users were satisfied with the tool. These figures use different measures and sources; they should not be read as directly comparable current rates.
The white paper also notes that tools relying on personal responsibility may be insufficient for people experiencing addiction. A limit can help structure spending, but it is not a cure and not using one is not a personal failing. If limits are not enough, self-exclusion and human support are available as additional steps.
