Yes—if you enjoy a story-led fantasy adventure built around exploration, puzzle-filled dungeons, combat, and memorable music. Ocarina of Time still offers a rewarding journey, but its original Nintendo 64 presentation shows its age. If early 3D visuals or older control conventions are likely to frustrate you, choose a more modernized version instead.
What makes Ocarina of Time worth trying?
Link’s quest takes him across Hyrule and through time as he works to stop Ganondorf. The adventure mixes exploration with weapons and items, enemy encounters, boss fights, and puzzles. The ocarina is part of that design: learned songs can open paths and change the time of day, rather than serving only as background flavor. Nintendo’s description of the original game outlines its setting and core mechanics.

The adventure’s appeal is more than historical importance. In a retrospective review, Nintendo Life praised its exploration, dungeons, atmosphere, and music, while judging that the game remains enjoyable. That is a critic’s assessment, not a promise that every first-time player will respond the same way.
What may feel dated?
The original’s visuals are the clearest adjustment: Nintendo Life points to jagged polygons, rough textures, and lighting that falls short of modern expectations. The game’s late-1990s 3D presentation is part of the experience, so players who prioritize contemporary graphics may find it harder to settle into the adventure. Its enduring strengths are in the journey and dungeon design, not in looking like a new release.

Which version should a first-time player choose?
| Version | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo 64 version through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack | You want to play before the Switch 2 remake arrives, or already have the membership. | Nintendo says access to N64 Classics requires an active Expansion Pack membership and that it does not plan to sell the games separately. Check Nintendo’s Nintendo Classics FAQ for the service terms. |
| Switch 2 remake, listed for November 5, 2026 | You prefer modernized presentation and controls and can wait until its listed release. | Nintendo advertises overhauled visuals, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, orchestral music, enhanced controls, and modern camera movements. These are announced features, not independently verified gameplay impressions. Nintendo’s US product listing gives the release date and edition details. |
| Ocarina of Time 3D for Nintendo 3DS | You own or can access a 3DS-family system and want a revised presentation of the original. | Nintendo describes refined gameplay, overhauled 3D visuals, a touch-based inventory, and motion controls. Nintendo UK’s game page covers the N64 and 3DS versions. Current retail availability is not established here. |
The practical choice comes down to how soon you want to play, which hardware you can use, and how much presentation modernization matters to you. Nintendo’s Australia library page lists the game in its N64 Classics group and notes an optional wireless N64 controller; catalogues and offers can differ by region, so check Nintendo Australia’s library page or your regional Nintendo service listing.

As of October 7, 2026, Nintendo lists the remake for November 5, 2026. If the original’s visuals or controls are a likely barrier, waiting is a reasonable choice: Nintendo has announced revised visuals, controls, camera movement, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, and orchestral music. Those details describe Nintendo’s announced product, not a hands-on judgment about how the remake plays.
If you already have access to the N64 version and want the classic experience, there is a clear reason to start now: its adventure, puzzles, dungeons, and music are the qualities that retrospective criticism continues to praise. The choice is about which presentation best suits you, rather than needing to complete another Zelda game first; the official descriptions reviewed here do not establish a required series order.
