To recover an ambient stream after an outage, configure the PC to power on when AC returns, arrange for the operating system to launch OBS, then have OBS start streaming with the --startstreaming launch parameter. Test the whole chain: OBS launching does not prove that the network, sources, or YouTube live session recovered.
What has to recover
There is no single OBS switch that handles a power outage. Recovery depends on several separate steps:
- Power: the computer must turn itself on when electricity returns.
- Operating system: it must boot far enough to launch OBS. A sign-in screen or recovery prompt can stop unattended startup.
- OBS: it must load the intended profile, scene collection, and scene, then start streaming.
- Stream path: the network, media and audio sources, and streaming service must be ready. The service may treat a full interruption as ending the original live session; test its behavior rather than assuming the same event or URL will resume.
The OBS launch parameter addresses only the third step: OBS describes --startstreaming as automatically starting streaming when OBS opens. OBS launch parameters
Set the computer to power on when electricity returns
Find the firmware setting for what the computer should do after AC power loss. The exact name and menu vary by manufacturer and model, so use the system or motherboard manual for the correct instructions.

ASUS motherboard example
On the ROG MAXIMUS Z790 HERO example documented by ASUS, the path is Advanced → APM Configuration → Restore AC Power Loss. Set it to Power On to boot when power returns. Power Off leaves the system off, while Last State restores its previous power state. Make the operating system launch OBS
OBS must be configured to launch after the operating system boots. On Windows 10 and 11, startup apps run when a user signs in; adding OBS there does not establish that the PC will pass a sign-in screen unattended.

Windows startup app
Use Start → Settings → Apps → Startup to manage startup apps, or open the Startup apps tab in Task Manager. Microsoft documents both paths for Windows 10 and 11. Microsoft startup app guidance
If the machine requires a password, confirmation, recovery action, or other interaction after a power event, startup may stop there. Verify how this specific PC behaves after a full shutdown and restart before relying on it.

Automated Windows launch and OBS arguments
OBS documents adding launch parameters to a Windows shortcut. Open the shortcut’s Properties and append the parameters after the executable path in Target. For scheduled or other automated launches, set Start in to the folder containing obs64.exe. Use the actual installation location on your system. OBS launch parameters
macOS and Linux
OBS documents launching on macOS through an Automator application or Terminal with open -a "OBS" --args --startstreaming. This launch command does not by itself configure a complete current macOS login-item setup. The official material cited here does not establish Linux desktop auto-launch steps, so consult the instructions for your distribution and desktop environment rather than assuming the Windows or macOS path applies.

Tell OBS to start streaming
Append --startstreaming to the OBS launch command or shortcut. A Windows shortcut target can use this form:
"C:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bitobs64.exe" --startstreamingThe example path may differ on your machine. If you also need OBS to load a particular profile, scene collection, or scene, the OBS launch guide lists --profile "name", --collection "name", and --scene "name". Confirm the names and resulting scene in OBS after a test launch. Do not put a stream key in public scripts, screenshots, or logs.

Test the complete recovery path
Do not rely on a successful manual launch as proof that outage recovery works. OBS recommends checking output settings and testing for a few minutes; its auto-configuration wizard considers hardware and network conditions. Compatible system requirements alone do not guarantee a machine can stream: CPU needs vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. OBS Quick Start Guide OBS system requirements
- Confirm OBS opens the intended profile, scene collection, and scene after a restart.
- Check that media and audio sources are available, and that network connectivity returns.
- Verify that OBS actually reaches a live state, not merely that its window opens.
- Check the streaming service’s live dashboard. Confirm whether it resumes the same event, waits for a reconnect, or requires a new event; do not assume the same live URL survives a full power loss.
- Test the full recovery chain under controlled conditions before leaving the stream unattended.
Outage protection is not the same as restart automation
A UPS can keep the streaming PC and network equipment powered through a brief interruption, but it does not configure motherboard auto-power-on or make OBS relaunch after a longer outage. Choose capacity based on the connected load and the runtime you need; no fixed runtime can be promised without those details. CISA power outage guidance
Recording caveat during a power loss
If you record locally as well as stream, an abrupt outage can leave an MP4 or MOV recording unrecoverable if the file was not finalized. OBS’s current English localization file suggests MKV when recording multiple audio tracks, followed by remuxing after recording. Because this guidance comes from a mutable development-branch file, verify the current OBS interface and guidance before relying on version-specific instructions. OBS English localization file
