The reliable way to stop surprise game charges is to control every account that can process a payment. A console restriction will not necessarily cover a mobile checkout, a PC store, a publisher’s website, or virtual currency bought through another platform.
Use two different safeguards: purchase approval, which pauses a transaction until an adult accepts it, and a spending cap, usually implemented as a funded account balance or a platform limit. First identify the billing route, then configure the family control for that store.

Start with the account that actually charges the payment

- Console accounts and their associated family groups
- PC game-store accounts
- Publisher accounts used for online games
- Payment cards, digital wallets, gift balances and prepaid codes
Open a recent receipt or the purchase history and identify the merchant. The same game can use different billing systems depending on where it was installed. A game bought on a console may be billed by that console store; a mobile in-app purchase may use the device store; a button inside the game may open a publisher checkout; and a virtual-currency purchase can follow yet another route.

Configure controls at each relevant payment processor. Google states that its approval settings apply only to purchases made through Google Play billing. Publisher controls can have the opposite limitation: Epic, for example, says its payment controls do not cover charges processed by console or PC platforms and do not cover purchases made with in-game currency.
Approval and a spending limit solve different problems
Approval is a transaction-by-transaction gate
An approval workflow sends a request to an adult before an eligible purchase completes. It is the better choice when you want to examine every game, add-on, subscription or in-app purchase. Depending on the service, the adult approves from a phone, email or family-management screen.
A cap limits available funds
A funded balance gives the child a defined amount to spend. It can be easier to manage for a weekly or monthly allowance, but it does not automatically provide the same review of each item. A child can spend the available balance on any purchase permitted by that account’s other restrictions.

Where a service supports only a balance, fund it with the intended amount and monitor the account’s history.
Google Play: choose what requires family approval
A family manager can configure the child or family member’s Purchase & download approvals setting. The available categories include:
- All content
- Purchases using the family payment method
- In-app purchases
- No approval
Choose the narrowest category that matches your goal. Selecting in-app purchases targets game transactions made through Google Play billing, while all content also covers paid apps and other eligible downloads. Google notes that some content and subscription categories are excluded from purchase requests, and behavior can differ when a family payment method is configured.

Do not treat this as a universal game-purchase switch. Google’s official wording is: Purchase approval settings only apply to purchases made through Google Play’s billing system.
If the game opens a web checkout, charges a publisher account, or is being played on a console, configure that separate route as well.
Apple devices: use Ask to Buy
Apple’s family feature for eligible downloads and purchases is Ask to Buy. On the parent or organizer device, the current support path is:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Family.
- Select the child’s name.
- Open Apps & Websites.
- Tap Restrictions.
- Open Ask to Buy.
- Turn on Require Purchase Approval.
When enabled, the child requests an eligible purchase and the adult decides whether to approve it. Apple says age and country or region can affect defaults and whether a child can turn the feature off. Its newer operating-system behavior also includes ways to request exceptions to certain limits. Check the child’s iOS or iPadOS version and region before relying on an identical menu or eligibility rule.
Ask to Buy governs purchases routed through the Apple account. It does not replace controls for a game’s separate website, another device platform, or a payment method outside Apple billing.
Microsoft and Xbox: approval, balance and notifications
Require approval for every purchase
In Microsoft Family Safety, open the child account’s spending controls and enable Require approval for every purchase. Microsoft describes this route for a child account with a credit card or other payment method attached. Each purchase request then requires an adult decision.

If you do not want to attach a credit card, add a defined amount to the child’s Microsoft account balance instead. Microsoft says the account cannot be overdrawn. Its guidance also describes approval when a purchase exceeds the child’s age limit or when the available funds run out, so the balance can function as an allowance rather than an open-ended card.

Turn on visibility controls
Spending notifications and activity reporting help you see requests, completed purchases and remaining funds. These controls apply to Microsoft’s account and store billing. They do not govern a charge made directly by an unrelated publisher or by another platform.
Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Account: restrictions plus a defined balance
A parent or guardian Nintendo Account in a family group can set restrictions for a child or supervised account. Nintendo’s controls can restrict eShop purchases and some in-game items. A separate age-based setting controls which eShop content the child can see or access; purchase permission and age visibility are separate decisions.
Do not confuse restrictions with a balance cap
Nintendo also describes a fixed account balance as a way to provide a defined budget. A balance limits what can be spent after funds are added, while purchase restrictions determine whether the child can initiate certain transactions at all.
Nintendo lists some balance top-ups and code redemptions among actions that purchase restrictions do not block. Therefore, a child who can redeem a code or receive a balance addition may still increase the amount available even when ordinary eShop purchases are restricted. Keep control of top-up methods and redemption codes separately.
Menu names and eligibility can differ by country and by hardware generation. Confirm whether the child uses a Switch 2, Switch or Switch Lite and use the Nintendo Account family settings for the correct region.
Steam Families: adult-paid requests, not a stated monthly cap
Steam Families is the current family feature set; it replaces the older Steam Family Sharing and Family View arrangement. An adult creates a family, assigns an account a child role and configures parental controls.

For a purchase, the child places items in a shopping cart and asks an adult to pay. Steam’s support wording is: Children can request an adult in the family to pay for their shopping cart.
The adult approves and pays from a mobile device or by email, and the approved game is added to the child’s account.
This is a request-and-approval workflow rather than a documented monthly spending cap. If you need a fixed allowance, set one outside Steam and approve requests only when the purchase fits that budget.
Epic Games: control Epic payments, then cover the platform gaps
Epic’s parental controls apply to payments processed by Epic. The service explicitly excludes payments made through PlayStation, Steam, Xbox and Nintendo Switch, as well as purchases made with in-game currencies such as V-Bucks. Set the control where the charge occurs, not merely in the publisher account.
Epic describes a daily spending threshold for accounts whose user indicates an age under 13. Treat that as an Epic-payment rule tied to the account’s age declaration and market; verify the current threshold and eligibility in the account before relying on it. It is not a general limit for the child’s console or PC spending.
PlayStation: use the family app’s monthly limit
The PlayStation Family App overview supports three relevant actions for a child’s PlayStation Store spending:

This is a platform-level limit for PlayStation Store purchases. Exact setup screens can vary with region, account configuration and current PS5 software, so open the current PlayStation Family App or Family Management support instructions before following menu-by-menu directions. Also check whether a particular game sends the child to an external checkout; a PlayStation limit cannot be assumed to cover that separate payment path.

A cross-platform setup procedure
- List every route. Record each console, phone, tablet, computer, game account and payment method available to the child.
- Match the charge to a processor. Use receipts and purchase history to distinguish Google Play, Apple billing, a console store, a PC store, a publisher checkout and virtual-currency transactions.
- Assign the child account correctly. Make sure the adult is the family manager, organizer or parent role and that the child account is actually included in that family group.
- Enable approval. Select the strongest available approval category for the transactions you want to review. On services with several categories, decide separately whether paid downloads, in-app purchases, subscriptions or all content need approval.
- Set a ceiling. Use a platform spending limit or fund only the intended balance. Remove an unrestricted card from the child account when a balance-only budget is meant to be the hard limit.
- Secure top-ups. Protect the adult account, wallet PIN, gift cards and redemption codes. A restriction that blocks a normal checkout may not block adding funds or redeeming a code.
- Check publisher settings. Review the game’s own parental controls, especially for web checkouts and virtual currency. Then verify the console or mobile-store controls independently.
- Test safely. Submit a harmless eligible request or inspect the parent notification and purchase history. Confirm which adult receives the request and what happens when the balance is insufficient.
- Recheck after changes. Revisit settings after a device replacement, operating-system update, family-account change, regional move or switch to a different edition of the game.

Common failure points and fixes
The child can still buy something after approval was enabled
Check the merchant on the receipt. The purchase may have used a different store, a publisher website, an adult account or an in-game currency balance. Apply the control at that billing route and remove saved payment details from accounts the child can access.
A request never reaches the adult
Verify that the adult has the organizer or family-manager role, the child is in the same family group, notifications are enabled and the correct email or mobile account is signed in. Submit a small eligible request to determine whether the problem is eligibility rather than delivery.
The balance limit was bypassed
Look for a top-up, gift-card redemption, code or second payment method. Nintendo specifically notes that some top-ups and code redemptions are outside purchase restrictions. On other platforms, inspect transaction history for a different account or processor.

A subscription or item does not generate a request
Approval categories do not cover every content type. Google notes exclusions for some content and subscription categories, and Apple eligibility depends on the child’s age, region and operating-system version. Review that platform’s current eligibility rules instead of assuming every checkout is requestable.
The child can spend through a console despite a publisher limit
Publisher settings cannot supersede the store that processes a console transaction. Epic explicitly excludes payments made through PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch, among others. Configure the console family controls and, where available, its monthly limit or funded balance.
