What Makes a Commander Precon a Good Starting Point for New Players?

By VGSources Team 10 min read

The best Commander precon for a new player is not the one with the highest reputation or the most powerful cards. It is a ready-to-play deck with a game plan the player can explain, a theme they want to play repeatedly, a manageable rules load, and a reasonable fit for the people at their table.

That makes “good” a fit judgment rather than a universal ranking. Your answer changes depending on whether you are new to Magic entirely or only new to Commander, how many colors you are comfortable managing, and whether your group plays relaxed teaching games or faster, more competitive pods.

Start with the decision that matters most: is Commander the right first step?

Commander is a multiplayer format built around a legendary commander and a 100-card deck. Apart from basic lands, cards are normally singleton, meaning you play no more than one copy of a card, and every card must fit the commander’s color identity. Players begin at 40 life, and games commonly involve several opponents. Those rules create a distinctive experience, but they also mean a beginner must learn more than how to cast a spell and attack.

Wizards of the Coast describes Commander as a format designed to promote social games of Magic. Before a game, players are expected to discuss what they want from the match and to aim for a memorable, enjoyable experience. That social agreement is not optional etiquette: it determines whether a preconstructed deck feels like a welcome introduction or an unfair mismatch.

If someone has never played Magic, basic instruction may be a smoother first lesson. Wizards’ product guide positions its Starter Kit as a learning product and Commander decks as products for multiplayer games. A new Magic player can learn with a simpler two-player introduction, then move into Commander once the turn structure, combat, mana and common card types are familiar. Someone who already understands Magic and specifically wants multiplayer play can reasonably begin with a Commander precon.

What a good beginner precon should provide

A plan that can be stated in one sentence

After reading the deck’s insert or a short guide, a learner should be able to say what the deck is trying to do. The wording does not need to be technical: “build a board of creatures and attack,” “use the graveyard as a resource,” or “make and benefit from tokens” are useful levels of explanation. A plan gives the player a reason to keep particular cards, a way to choose between two plays, and a method for recognizing whether a game is going well.

Plan clarity is different from raw strength. A powerful list can still be a poor teaching tool if its cards pull in several unrelated directions. Conversely, a straightforward deck can be an excellent first purchase even if it is not expected to dominate a stronger table.

A theme the player genuinely likes

New players learn faster when they are curious about what their cards represent. Dragons, spirits, tokens, graveyards and other themes can make unfamiliar rules worth reading. Enjoyment also matters after the first few games: a player is more likely to remember interactions and improve when they want to shuffle the same deck again.

Do not choose a theme solely because another player calls it easy. The official Starter Commander Deck listing names themes and colors, but it does not rank the five products by difficulty or declare one the simplest. Personal interest is therefore a legitimate selection criterion, not a distraction from “correct” deckbuilding.

Manageable rules and tracking

Every Commander deck contains unique cards, but some lists ask a beginner to track many kinds of information at once: several token types, +1/+1 counters, temporary effects, graveyard permissions, triggered abilities and complicated choices. That does not make such a deck bad. It means the learner should know what they are signing up for and have a patient table.

Use the current decklist to inspect the actual cards before buying. Count the recurring mechanics, note how many tokens or counters appear, and look for cards that require remembering an effect outside the battlefield. The cited product descriptions do not provide a complexity score, so any claim that one named deck is objectively easier must come from examining its current list, not from the product name alone.

How Commander’s rules affect the learning curve

The 100-card singleton structure

Commander requires exactly 100 cards, including the commander. Except for basic lands and cards that explicitly allow multiples, you normally use only one copy of each card. The commander begins outside the deck in the command zone and defines which colors may appear in the list.

A precon removes the deck-construction burden, but it does not remove the reading burden. A learner still has to identify what the commander does, recognize the deck’s important support cards and understand why a one-of card matters. This is why a coherent plan is more valuable for a beginner than a list assembled from individually impressive but disconnected cards.

Forty life and multiplayer decisions

Players start at 40 life, and a typical game has more than two players. A new player therefore has to evaluate several opponents, decide when an attack creates a political problem, and understand that eliminating one player can change the balance of the table. The extra life total also makes games longer than many introductory two-player matches, giving a learner more opportunities to see a card work but also more turns in which a mistake can matter.

The social contract

Commander’s official introduction treats pregame communication as part of the format. Before opening hands, ask what power level and pace the group expects, whether unusual strategies are welcome, and whether anyone is teaching. A beginner deck is a better starting point when the group agrees to explain unfamiliar interactions and avoid treating a first game as a test the learner must pass.

Use color count as a comfort check, not a verdict

Wizards’ general mana guidance explains that adding colors expands the cards available to a deck but can make it less likely that a draw contains the particular color of mana needed at the right time. The article also stresses that there are no hard-and-fast mana-base rules: the curve, card pool, strategy and expected opponents all matter.

For a beginner, color count is therefore one useful complexity signal. A one- or two-color deck may be easier to read because its mana requirements are more predictable, while a three-color deck can offer a theme that the player finds much more motivating. Neither statement guarantees an outcome. A focused three-color precon can play more clearly than a scattered two-color list, and a two-color deck can still contain difficult interactions.

When comparing candidates, inspect the colored costs in the early turns, the number of lands that enter tapped, and whether the deck routinely asks for multiple specific colors. Treat those observations as questions to investigate rather than proof that a deck is unsuitable.

What comes in a ready-to-play Starter Commander Deck?

Wizards Play Network’s Starter Commander Deck listing describes a package intended to begin a game without first buying or assembling a complete deck. Each set contains one ready-to-play deck built from one foil-etched legendary commander and 99 nonfoil cards, including lands; 10 double-sided tokens; a deck box; punchout counters; a strategy insert; a Commander rules summary; and a reference card explaining the turn structure.

Those physical aids matter for a first-time player. Tokens and counters prevent a learner from having to improvise markers, the rules summary answers common format questions at the table, and the turn-reference card reduces the need to memorize every phase immediately. A deck box also makes it practical to keep the product together between games.

The listing identifies these products as released on December 2, 2022. It does not establish present-day stock, price, relative power or comparative difficulty, and Wizards’ product guide cautions that availability can be limited to supplies on hand. Check current local or retailer availability rather than assuming every release remains equally easy to find.

The five Starter Commander Deck examples

The five named decks illustrate how to compare a product line without pretending that the listing provides a beginner ranking.

Deck Published color pair What the listing confirms What you still need to check
First Flight White-blue It is one of the five ready-to-play Starter Commander Decks. Read the current decklist to judge its mechanics, curve and tracking demands.
Grave Danger Blue-black It belongs to the same beginner-oriented product line. Check how much graveyard and triggered-ability management it requires.
Chaos Incarnate Black-red It is a ready-to-play example from the December 2022 release. Check whether its choices and timing effects are comfortable for the learner.
Draconic Destruction Red-green It is included among the five listed color pairs. Check its mana curve, creature sizes and any rules-heavy card text.
Token Triumph Green-white It is another ready-to-play option in the release. Check how many token types, counters and combat triggers the list uses.

The names and colors are useful starting information, not a measured difficulty scale. The source does not report beginner success rates or declare which of these five is easiest to pilot.

A step-by-step way to choose between precons

  1. Decide which learner you are buying for. If the person is new to Magic, provide basic instruction first or pair the precon with a patient teacher. If they already know the game and want multiplayer play, continue with the Commander comparison.
  2. Write down the desired experience. Ask whether the player wants combat, creatures, a particular fantasy theme, graveyard play, tokens or another recognizable identity. Eliminate decks that do not make them want to play a second game.
  3. Read the strategy insert before opening the deck. See whether the plan can be explained in a sentence and whether the suggested play pattern makes sense without outside terminology.
  4. Inspect the current decklist. Look for repeated mechanics, token and counter tracking, triggered abilities, unusual card types and spells with many choices. This is where you test rules load rather than guessing from the box art.
  5. Check the mana demands. Count the colors, look at early colored costs and note how often lands enter tapped. Use color count as a comfort signal, not an automatic pass-or-fail rule.
  6. Ask the playgroup before purchasing. Confirm the expected power level, game length and willingness to teach. A deck that fits the group is usually a better first experience than a supposedly easier deck that no one else enjoys facing.
  7. Verify what is actually available. Confirm that the box contains the listed accessories and check current stock. Product availability and prices can change, particularly for a 2022 release.
  8. Plan the first game as a lesson. Keep the strategy insert and turn-reference card nearby, use the included tokens and counters, and allow take-backs when a player misunderstood a card. The objective is to make the deck legible, not to punish every unfamiliar rule.

Common mistakes that make a precon feel harder than it is

Buying for reputation instead of fit

Online recommendations often compress a complicated decision into a single “best” deck. That approach ignores the player’s preferred theme, prior Magic experience and table. A deck celebrated by experienced players may be enjoyable for a veteran but confusing for someone learning the format.

Assuming fewer colors guarantee simplicity

Color count affects mana consistency, but it does not measure the number of triggers, choices or unusual rules in a list. Use the decklist and a sample hand to evaluate the actual learning burden.

Ignoring the group’s expectations

A relaxed precon-versus-precon evening can be a good classroom. A high-powered pod that expects fast wins and precise rules knowledge may not be. Discuss expectations before the game rather than trying to discover them through a frustrating loss.

Changing too much too soon

New players sometimes replace cards before they know what the original deck is trying to accomplish. Play several games, note which cards are confusing or consistently stranded in hand, and make small changes only after the core plan is understandable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating the rules insert as a complete course

The included summary and turn card are useful references, not substitutes for learning basic Magic concepts. If a player is entirely new, demonstrate a few turns with open hands before introducing multiplayer politics and Commander-specific interactions.

How to tell whether the first deck is working

After a few games, ask practical questions rather than “Did it win?” Can the player identify the deck’s plan? Do they know what the commander contributes? Can they explain why a card was useful, even when the game was lost? Were they able to keep track of tokens, counters and triggers without constant rescue? Did they enjoy the theme enough to want another game?

Positive answers indicate that the precon is doing its job as a starting point. If the player likes the theme but struggles with rules, simplify the teaching game and mark the most important triggers. If the mana repeatedly prevents them from casting spells, review the deck’s color requirements before replacing cards. If the table is the problem, find a group that welcomes learning rather than concluding that Commander itself is unsuitable.

Bottom line

A good Commander precon gives a new player a recognizable plan, a theme worth revisiting, enough physical and strategic support to play immediately, and a rules burden that matches their experience. The Starter Commander Deck line is a concrete ready-to-play example, with five named color-pair options and useful teaching accessories, but its official listing does not rank those decks or prove that one is easiest. Choose by learner, plan, mechanics, mana comfort and playgroup fit, then let repeated games—not a universal “best precon” list—determine what to modify next.
