The best settings to fix lag in Minecraft on PC depend on what “lag” means. If your frame rate is low or the picture stutters, lower render distance first and test again. If mobs, crops, or other game mechanics seem slow, lowering simulation distance may help. Delayed multiplayer actions can instead involve the network or server, which graphics settings cannot fix.
First, identify what kind of Minecraft lag you have
- Low FPS or visual stutter: The PC may be struggling to draw the scene. Render distance is the most useful first setting to test.
- Slow game mechanics: If entity behavior, crop growth, or similar events feel delayed, game processing may be involved; simulation distance can affect that workload.
- Multiplayer delay: Delayed actions may stem from network conditions or server performance. Changing graphics settings does not diagnose or guarantee a fix for those causes.
Before changing anything, note whether you play Java or Bedrock Edition, your game version, and whether shaders, resource packs, or performance mods are enabled. Settings and available graphics paths vary by edition and version, so do not treat Bedrock values as a Java preset.

Change render distance first for low FPS or stutter
Render distance controls how far away blocks and entities are drawn. Higher values require more client rendering work and can reduce frame rate, so lower the setting one step—or choose a clearly lower value—then test in the same world and location. Microsoft’s render and simulation distance documentation explains this workload distinction.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open the video or graphics settings for your edition and version.
- Find Render Distance and lower it by one step.
- Return to the same area and play long enough to compare how smooth it feels.
- If stutter or low FPS continues, lower it again. Keep the highest setting that remains smooth on your PC; there is no universal best number.
In multiplayer, the server may limit effective visible distance. Microsoft notes that the effective distance is constrained by whichever is lower: the client setting or the server’s view distance. If lowering your client setting does not change what you can see, a server cap may be the reason.

Try simulation distance when game processing feels sluggish
Simulation distance determines how far away game mechanics remain active. These include entity behavior, mob spawning, plant growth, and fluid movement. Unlike render distance, which primarily affects drawing the scene, simulation distance can add workload for both client and server; Microsoft describes it as having a higher performance cost.
If your edition exposes this setting and the problem is slow mechanics rather than simply a choppy picture, reduce simulation distance and test again. The trade-off is gameplay: fewer distant entities and mechanics remain active. Microsoft’s documented numeric ranges are for Bedrock Edition, so they should not be copied as Java recommendations.

Use graphics presets as a trade-off, not a magic fix
Java Edition’s system requirements published by Mojang on July 21, 2026 pair Fast settings with a minimum target of 1080p at 30 FPS, and Fancy settings with a recommended target of 1080p at 60 FPS. These are stated targets, not a guarantee that a particular PC will reach those frame rates. The same page lists 8 GB RAM with a discrete GPU or 12 GB with integrated graphics for its minimum target, and 16 GB for its recommended target. See Minecraft Java Edition System Requirements for the current published details.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf Java’s graphics preset is available, trying Fast can reduce visual quality in exchange for a lighter graphics workload. Test it separately from render distance so you can tell which change helped. Mojang’s requirements describe targets, not proof that you need to buy hardware or that a setting change will deliver a specific FPS gain.

Check version-specific performance changes
For Java players whose slowdown is most noticeable around many mobs, Mojang’s Java Edition 1.21.9 release notes report improved entity rendering and skipping particles outside the player’s view. The notes also caution that FPS may not improve much when the main cause is something else, such as high render distance while few mobs are nearby. This is a version-specific change, not a general promise that updating will fix every performance problem.

If settings changes do not help
- Confirm the game edition and version, then check the official Minecraft Video & Graphics Support resources for relevant optimization or troubleshooting guidance.
- Compare your PC with Mojang’s current Java Edition requirements if you play Java; the published targets are reference points, not a diagnosis of your particular bottleneck.
- Do not assume a graphics card, memory upgrade, cooling accessory, or monitor is the answer. First establish what component is limiting your specific PC and whether it can be upgraded compatibly.
