Why the groups can be tricky
BAT, BALL, GLOVE and SOCK may look like baseball equipment, but that is a decoy: BAT belongs with DOG, FROG and NEWT, while the other words fit separate groups. The purple category is also a phrase-completion trick rather than a conventional semantic category: each answer becomes a familiar word when FOX is placed before it.

The New York Times Help Center explains: “Players are given 16 words and must find groups of four items that share something in common.” The four groups are color-coded yellow, green, blue and purple; the Times describes yellow as easiest and purple as trickiest. Categories are curated by editors using the Oxford Dictionary, and apparent overlap between words is intentional. The New York Times Connections Help Center.
A new daily puzzle releases at midnight in the player’s timezone. The Times lists the Games app, Connections website, nytimes.com/theathletic and the News app as places to play. Connections is free to play without registration or sign-in; the full puzzle archive is available to All Access and Games subscribers. Archive play affects some statistics but not streaks.
