What the ClanSize setting does
ClanSize sets the maximum number of players who can belong to one clan on that server. It affects the shared clan group rather than the total number of people who may connect to the server. A larger value lets more players coordinate shared progression, bases and activities in the same clan, which matters for both PvE and PvP groups.

The setting is a gameplay rule, so it belongs in ServerGameSettings.json. It does not belong in ServerHostSettings.json, the file used for host and connection-related options. Stunlock Studios’ dedicated-server instructions describe those as two separate settings files.
Choose the editing method

Do not edit both methods at once unless you know which location your provider actually loads. A panel may generate or overwrite the file, while a dedicated server may ignore a copy left only in its installation defaults.

Set ClanSize on a self-hosted Windows server
1. Stop the server and make a backup
Stop the dedicated server before changing the file. Copy the current ServerGameSettings.json somewhere outside the active settings directory, using a filename that identifies the date. This gives you a rollback if a typo prevents the server from starting or another setting is accidentally removed.
If you launch the server through a script or shortcut, note whether it includes a custom -persistentDataPath. That argument changes where persistent data, including the effective Settings folder, is stored. The path visible in the installation directory may not be the path used by the running instance.

Stunlock Studios’ current Windows dedicated-server instructions say the shipped defaults are under VRisingServer_Data/StreamingAssets/Settings/. Those files provide defaults; custom values should be placed in the local override directory:
%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowStunlock StudiosVRisingServerSettingsIn a normal Windows installation, paste that path into File Explorer’s address bar. If the server is started with a custom -persistentDataPath, look for the Settings directory below that chosen path instead. The active override folder is the one the running server uses, not necessarily the folder nearest the executable.
3. Open or create ServerGameSettings.json
Use a plain-text editor that does not add formatting or a hidden document extension. If ServerGameSettings.json already exists in the active override folder, preserve its other settings and change only the ClanSize value. If it does not exist, create a file with exactly that name, including the .json extension.

The smallest valid file is:
{"ClanSize": 6}The value in this example is six players per clan. Replace 6 with the number you want, subject to the range accepted by your current game build or host.
4. Add the key without breaking JSON
If the file already contains settings, add ClanSize as another property inside the outer braces. Put a comma after the preceding property, but not after the final property. For example:
{"GameModeType": 0, "ClanSize": 6, "CastleDamageMode": 2}JSON is strict. The key must be spelled exactly ClanSize, including the capital C and capital S. The value must be a number, not quoted text:

Keep the file as UTF-8 plain text, retain the other game rules, and save it with the same filename. A maintained example configuration also shows the numeric form "ClanSize": 5; the important point is the key and number format, not that particular value.
5. Restart and reconnect
Save the file, start the dedicated server again, and reconnect your client. The server reads its settings during startup; changing the file while the process is running does not reliably apply the new value. If you use a wrapper, service or scheduled task, restart the actual server process rather than only closing a console window that may leave it running.

After reconnecting, check the clan-management screen or attempt to invite an additional player. Test with the server’s normal account permissions and on the same save you intend to use. A client-side display that still shows the old limit usually means the server loaded another file, a preset supplied a different value, or the process was not fully restarted.
Set ClanSize on a rented server
GPORTAL control panel
GPORTAL’s documented V Rising workflow is:
- Sign in to the GPORTAL account.
- Open My servers.
- Select the V Rising server.
- Open Basic settings.
- Find
ClanSize, enter the desired number, and save the settings. - Use the panel’s restart action, then reconnect after the server is online.
GPORTAL documents a ClanSize scale from 1 to 10 in its interface. That is the range exposed by that provider’s documented panel, not proof that every V Rising release or host has the same universal ceiling.
Other hosting panels
Panel labels vary, but the setting is normally under a V Rising section named Game Settings, Basic settings or a similar configuration page. Shockbyte’s V Rising documentation likewise describes editing the maximum clan size through its V Rising game-settings/control-panel workflow. Select the field named ClanSize, save, and perform the host’s restart action.
If the panel offers a drop-down or validation message, follow that permitted range instead of forcing a value into an underlying file. If no clan-size field is visible, the host may be using a preset, an imported configuration or a restricted interface. Ask the host which settings file or preset controls the server before editing anything through an unsupported method.

The only concrete range documented in the supplied provider guidance is 1–10 in GPORTAL’s interface. Older community configurations and other references show different ceilings, and the available limit can change with the active V Rising release or a host’s panel implementation. Therefore, do not treat a value such as 10 as a guaranteed game-wide maximum.

When planning a large clan, decide from the controls you can actually see on the server you operate. A number that can be typed into a text file is not automatically a supported value for every release.
How defaults, overrides and presets interact
The installation’s VRisingServer_Data/StreamingAssets/Settings/ files are defaults. Stunlock Studios instructs administrators to place custom values in the local override directory, where the server looks after loading its defaults. Editing only the shipped default can therefore appear to do nothing, especially after an update replaces that installation file.

Presets add another possible source of confusion. Stunlock’s issue tracker includes a case in which editing ServerGameSettings.json did not change the displayed clan size and the discussion involved presets and overrides. If a preset is selected in your launch process or control panel, identify where that preset is stored and whether it is regenerated on startup. A panel may also write a fresh settings file when you press Save, replacing manual edits.
Do not assume that the file you can see is the file the running server used. Verify the launch path, the persistent-data path and any preset selection together.

The key is ignored
- Check the spelling and capitalization: it must be
ClanSize. - Check that the value is an unquoted JSON number, such as
6. - Check commas, braces and quotation marks around neighboring properties.
- Confirm the filename is
ServerGameSettings.json, notServerGameSettings.json.txt.
One malformed character can cause the server to reject the file or fall back to another configuration. Restore the backup, reapply only the single change, and restart.

The wrong file was edited
Compare the file’s location with the server launch configuration. On Windows, the usual override is %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowStunlock StudiosVRisingServerSettings; a custom -persistentDataPath relocates the corresponding folder. Editing VRisingServer_Data/StreamingAssets/Settings/ alone changes the installation default, not necessarily the active override.
The server was not fully restarted
Stop the process, wait for it to exit, start it again, and reconnect. On a rented host, use the provider’s restart button after saving; closing the browser or returning to the server list does not reload game settings.
A preset or panel overwrote the value
Reopen the panel after restarting and see whether it still displays your number. If it reverted, the panel or selected preset is authoritative. Change the value through that interface or disable the conflicting preset if the host provides such an option. Avoid repeatedly editing a generated file that the panel will replace.
The save uses another persistent-data location
A save transferred from a client-hosted game can make path mistakes harder to spot. Confirm which persistent-data path the dedicated server uses and that the transferred save is in the directory it actually loads. Stunlock’s dedicated-server instructions cover persistent-data paths and transferred save folders; use that layout rather than assuming the client’s original location is still active.
The panel rejects the number
Use a value inside the range offered by the panel. A provider’s validation limit may be narrower than values accepted by another host or an older configuration example. If the field is absent or locked, contact the host for its supported method instead of modifying files outside the panel’s managed directory.

Choose file editing when you need direct control over the complete configuration and understand the server’s paths. Choose a managed panel when you prefer a guided interface and do not want to maintain the process yourself, while recognizing that the provider’s range and preset behavior control what is available.
A verification checklist
Use this checklist whenever you change the clan limit:
- The server is stopped or the host’s panel is ready for a configuration change.
- You identified the active settings location, including any custom
-persistentDataPath. - The file is
ServerGameSettings.json, notServerHostSettings.json. - The property is spelled
ClanSize. - The value is a JSON number, not a quoted string.
- All existing settings remain intact and the JSON braces and commas are valid.
- The number is within the range exposed or accepted by the current build or hosting panel.
- You saved the file or panel form successfully.
- You fully restarted the server.
- You reconnected and tested an invitation or the clan screen.
