Set both values in the Space Engineers Dedicated Server tool or in the active SpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfg file. In the tool, open your server instance, choose Continue to server configuration, then go to Server settings > General. Enter the listing text in Server name and the visitor-facing explanation in Server Description, then select Save & start. Rented-host panels normally expose the same two fields.

The name is the label players see in the server browser. The description is owner-written information shown to visitors. If you edit XML instead of using the interface, change ServerName and ServerDescription, preserve valid XML, restart or reload the server, and confirm the result in the browser.

Keen Software House’s official documentation defines Server name as the “Name that will be shown in the server list.” It defines Server Description as text that “Describes your server.” They serve different purposes:
- Server name: the short identity players scan when browsing available servers.
- Server Description: explanatory text for visitors, such as the type of play, rules, or scheduled activities you want to communicate.
Changing one field does not automatically change the other. Enter both deliberately, because a descriptive listing name and a useful description answer different questions for a prospective player.

Choose the configuration method for your server
The correct path depends on where the server runs and who controls its files.
Windows Dedicated Server tool: Local/Console instance
Use this when you start the server directly with the Windows Dedicated Server application and have a Local/Console instance.

Use the service workflow when the Dedicated Server tool runs the server as a Windows service. The fields are the same, but you first create or select the service instance.
Rented hosting panel
Use the provider’s web configuration page when the host manages the machine and does not give you normal desktop access. Panels commonly provide editable Server Name and Server Description fields.

Direct XML editing
Edit the configuration file when you need file-level control or when a panel does not expose the fields. The active file is named SpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfg.
Set the values in the Windows Dedicated Server tool
Local/Console procedure
- Run
SpaceEngineersDedicated.exe. - Choose the Local/Console instance.
- Select Continue to server configuration.
- Open Server settings and remain in the General section.
- Enter the public listing text in Server name.
- Enter the visitor information in Server Description.
- Choose Save & start.
The save-and-start action applies the configuration while starting the instance. If the server was already running and the interface offers a separate stop, reload, or restart control, use that control as appropriate to the tool’s current state before checking the listing.

- Run the Dedicated Server tool as an administrator.
- Choose Add new instance.
- Give the service a unique name across the Windows system.
- Select the new instance.
- Choose Continue to server configuration.
- In Server settings > General, fill in Server name and Server Description.
- Save and start the service instance.
The service’s system name and the public server name are separate values. The unique name created in the service workflow identifies the Windows service; Server name is the label shown to players.
Edit SpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfg directly
Manual editing uses the same settings as the graphical interface. In the active SpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfg, locate these elements:

<ServerDescription>Co-op survival, friendly PvE rules, weekly events.</ServerDescription>- Stop the server or use the host’s documented maintenance procedure before editing, so a running process does not overwrite your changes.
- Open the active
SpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfgin a text editor that does not add unrelated formatting. - Replace only the text between
<ServerName>and</ServerName>. - Replace only the text between
<ServerDescription>and</ServerDescription>. - Keep every opening and closing tag paired and preserve the surrounding configuration structure.
- Save the file, restart or reload the server with the documented control, and inspect the server browser.
Malformed XML can stop the intended value from loading. Missing a closing tag, changing a tag name, or editing a different configuration file from the one used by the active instance can leave the old listing text in place or prevent the setting from being read.
Use a rented-host configuration panel
A rented provider may hide the Windows application and expose the same settings through a web panel. The labels vary slightly, but the relevant controls are normally Server Name and Server Description.
- Open the server’s configuration or settings page in the provider panel.
- Find the fields labelled Server Name and Server Description.
- Enter the text you want players to see.
- Save the panel changes.
- Use the panel’s documented restart or reload action.
- Search for the server in the game’s browser and verify both fields.
If the panel provides an XML editor instead of separate inputs, use the ServerName and ServerDescription elements and retain valid XML. If the panel has queued actions, wait for the save and restart operation to finish before judging whether the new text applied.
Self-hosting and rented hosting: what changes
Both approaches can set the same public fields. The difference is who performs the surrounding administration.

Hosting is optional for this task. The official Windows Dedicated Server tool supports self-hosting; a rented panel is simply another place to enter the same two values.
Write a name and description that help players decide
The interface does not require a particular writing style, so match the text to what a visitor needs to know before joining.
Use the name for identity
Put the server’s recognizable identity in Server name. A name can distinguish a cooperative world, a community, or a recurring event without placing all of the rules in the listing label.
Use the description for context
Use Server Description for the explanatory details visitors would otherwise have to discover after joining. The example configuration uses “Co-op survival, friendly PvE rules, weekly events.” You can follow that pattern by stating the play style, broad rule set, and any regular activity your community actually provides.

Do not promise undocumented formatting behavior
The authoritative documentation does not publish a definitive character limit, markup rule, or profanity-filter specification for these fields. Treat the description as ordinary text, avoid relying on unverified formatting tricks, and verify how the final text appears in the browser.
Verify the change after saving
- Confirm that you edited the instance that is actually running. A machine can contain more than one local or service instance.
- Confirm that the public Server name and Server Description fields contain the intended text, rather than only changing an internal service name.
- Save through the tool or panel, or save the XML file if editing manually.
- Restart or reload using the control appropriate to your deployment.
- Open the Space Engineers server browser and locate the listing.
- Check the spelling, capitalization, and complete description as displayed to a visitor.
The browser is the final check because it shows the values that players actually receive, not merely what a local editor has stored.
Troubleshoot an unchanged or missing listing
The old name or description is still visible
- Restart or reload the server after saving. A file or panel change may not be read by a running instance until it starts again.
- Check that you changed the active instance, not another local world or service configuration.
- If you used a panel, confirm that its save operation completed before restarting.
- Search the browser again after the server has finished starting.
The XML value is ignored
- Compare the element names exactly:
ServerNameandServerDescription. - Make sure each opening tag has its matching closing tag.
- Preserve the rest of the configuration structure instead of pasting an isolated fragment over the entire file.
- Verify that the file you edited is the one used by the running instance.
The service will not use the intended instance
- Run the Dedicated Server tool as an administrator.
- Check that the service instance has a unique system-wide name.
- Select that instance before choosing Continue to server configuration.
- Set the public fields in Server settings > General, then save and start it.
The description appears differently than expected
There is no authoritative published specification for a character limit, markup support, or profanity filtering. Remove unverified formatting assumptions, shorten the text if the browser presentation is awkward, save again, and verify the rendered listing.
