On a systemd-based CentOS or Linux server, set the timezone with timedatectl set-timezone Region/City. First choose a valid IANA zone, then verify the result with timedatectl. This changes how the operating system displays and interprets local time; it does not, by itself, synchronize the server clock.

The correct command sequence
The standard method on CentOS 7 and 8, and on RHEL 9, is the timedatectl interface provided by systemd. Run the following as a user with sudo rights:

- Display the current timezone and synchronization state:
timedatectl - Find the exact IANA name for your location. Replace
Citywith a distinctive part of the name:timedatectl list-timezones | grep <City> - Set the zone, using the returned
Region/Cityspelling:sudo timedatectl set-timezone America/Chicago - Verify the change:
timedatectl
The new zone is stored as the system configuration and remains in effect after a reboot. The exact command is the same whether the server is physically in that location or hosted elsewhere; timezone describes the location whose civil-time rules should be applied, not the data center’s address.
What a timezone setting changes—and what it does not
A Linux system keeps time as an absolute clock and applies a timezone when it presents that time to users and applications. The selected IANA zone supplies the daylight-saving and historical offset rules. Logs, scheduled jobs, shell output, and programs that ask the operating system for local time can therefore show a different wall-clock value after a timezone change.

Changing the zone does not set the hardware or system clock to a new instant. It also does not turn network time synchronization on or off. A server can have the correct timezone but an inaccurate clock, or an accurate UTC clock with an unsuitable local display zone. Check both properties separately before diagnosing a time-related incident.
Before you change the setting
Confirm the operating system and init system
timedatectl is intended for systemd-based installations. CentOS 7 and CentOS 8 use it in normal installations, as do current RHEL releases such as RHEL 9. On a minimal, containerized, or unusually old system, the command may be missing because systemd is not the active init system. If timedatectl is unavailable, identify the distribution and release before using a legacy method rather than copying a command intended for another platform.

Most application and database servers are easiest to operate in UTC, especially when they serve users in several regions. A local timezone can be useful for a machine whose operators and scheduled maintenance windows are tied to one civil-time region. Whichever policy you choose, apply it consistently to the operating system, applications, monitoring, and runbooks. A timezone change can alter the displayed date and the interpretation of recurring local-time schedules without changing the underlying instant.
Use an IANA name, not an abbreviation
Names such as America/Chicago come from the public IANA time zone database and encode daylight-saving rules. Abbreviations such as CST are ambiguous: they can refer to different offsets in different countries and may not express seasonal changes. Use the full Region/City value returned by timedatectl list-timezones.
Step-by-step with timedatectl
1. Inspect the current state
Run:
timedatectlThe output includes local time, universal time, the real-time clock, the configured time zone, and whether network time synchronization is active. Record the current value before making a change so that an unexpected application result can be traced back to the configuration change.

2. Search the installed timezone list
To see every available name, run:
timedatectl list-timezonesFor a shorter result, filter it:
timedatectl list-timezones | grep New_YorkUse the exact capitalization and slash-separated spelling from the output. If a search returns nothing, broaden the search term or inspect the complete list. The list reflects the timezone database installed on that host, so a very old package set may not contain recently introduced regional aliases.
3. Apply the selected zone
Set the zone with:
sudo timedatectl set-timezone America/New_YorkReplace the example with the value appropriate for the server’s operating policy. The command changes the system timezone configuration; it does not require you to calculate an offset manually, and it automatically uses the IANA rules for daylight-saving transitions where those rules apply.
4. Verify immediately
Run timedatectl again and check the Time zone line. You can also print the local date and the UTC date side by side:
date
date -uThe two values should differ by the offset represented by the selected zone at that moment. During a daylight-saving transition, the offset may differ from the value you expect from a winter or summer example, so verify the zone name rather than judging only by a numeric offset.
Choosing the right zone for common server locations
The following examples illustrate the naming pattern; they are not interchangeable abbreviations:

If the server’s users are distributed globally, keeping the host in UTC and converting at the application or reporting layer can avoid daylight-saving surprises. If an operational team requires local time, document the selected IANA name in the server inventory so a replacement host receives the same setting.
Timezone versus clock synchronization
Red Hat’s RHEL 9 guidance treats timezone configuration and clock synchronization as separate tasks. The timezone determines presentation; the synchronization service keeps the clock close to a trusted reference.
Check synchronization status
The timedatectl output reports whether network time synchronization is active. A healthy timezone line does not prove that the clock is synchronized. Investigate the synchronization service when timestamps drift, certificates appear not-yet-valid, or distributed logs disagree by more than the expected timezone offset.
Chrony is the normal synchronization service
On RHEL 9 and later, Red Hat documents chronyd, supplied by the chrony package, as the service used for network time synchronization. A typical inspection command is:
systemctl status chronydUse the service status and your organization’s configured time sources to determine whether synchronization is running. Installing or reconfiguring chrony is an administration task separate from selecting the timezone; changing one does not automatically repair the other.

Runtime changes are not the same as permanent configuration
Commands issued through chronyc can adjust a running daemon, but Red Hat notes that changes made this way are lost when chronyd restarts. Put permanent source and policy changes in /etc/chrony.conf, then restart or reload the service according to the configuration change. Do not treat a successful one-time chronyc result as proof that the setting will survive a reboot.
Manual time setting is a fallback
timedatectl set-time can set the clock manually when synchronization is unavailable, but it changes the clock instant and can disrupt applications, authentication, certificates, and scheduled work. Prefer restoring chrony-based synchronization whenever possible. If a manual correction is unavoidable, coordinate it with application owners and verify the resulting time and synchronization state afterward.

Older CentOS 6 instructions commonly changed /etc/localtime directly, either by replacing the file or making it a symbolic link to a zone file. That technique is not the preferred workflow on systemd-based CentOS. A Cirata vendor guide specifically warns that direct /etc/localtime changes caused problems with its replication products on CentOS 7 and recommends timedatectl there. Treat that as a product-specific compatibility warning, but it is a good reason to use the supported systemd interface whenever it is available.

For a single host, run the commands interactively and verify the output. For fleets, make the desired zone an explicit configuration value and execute the same idempotent operation on every host. A simple shell pattern is:

timedatectlThe validation step prevents a typo from reaching the setter. In configuration-management systems, run the equivalent module or command with privilege escalation, then collect timedatectl output as a post-change check. Keep timezone policy separate from chrony source configuration so a playbook does not accidentally change clock synchronization while fixing local display time.

Troubleshooting
“Unknown time zone” or an invalid argument
The name is not present in the host’s timezone list, or it was typed with the wrong case or separator. Run timedatectl list-timezones, search for the city, and copy the exact returned value. Do not substitute a three-letter abbreviation or invent a slash path.
timedatectl is not found
The host may be an older release, a non-systemd environment, or a stripped-down container. Confirm the release and init system first. On systems that genuinely require a legacy method, consult that release’s documentation for how /etc/localtime is managed. Do not apply an old CentOS 6 recipe to a CentOS 7 or newer system without checking software compatibility.

Permission denied
Changing the system timezone requires administrative privileges. Prefix the setter with sudo, or run it from a root shell. If sudo itself is unavailable, use the approved privileged access method for that server rather than changing files manually as an unprivileged user.
The displayed time is still wrong
First distinguish an offset problem from a clock problem. If the Time zone line is correct but the instant is wrong, inspect synchronization status and chronyd. If UTC is correct but local time is not, recheck the selected IANA name and daylight-saving rules. Compare date and date -u and inspect application-specific timezone settings; some programs deliberately use their own configuration or UTC regardless of the host setting.
Scheduled jobs moved by an hour
A timezone change can alter recurring local-time schedules around daylight-saving transitions. Review cron entries, systemd timers, application schedulers, and maintenance windows after the change. Where a job must run at a fixed interval or at a globally consistent instant, define it in UTC or use the scheduler’s documented timezone feature instead of relying on an implicit host default.
Logs from different servers do not line up
Check both the timezone policy and clock synchronization on every host. A one-hour or several-hour difference may be a timezone mismatch; a changing or irregular difference may indicate clock drift. Standardize the policy, synchronize clocks with chrony, and document whether log aggregation normalizes events to UTC.
