How to Set Up a Co-Marketing Campaign Between a Payment Provider and a Game Developer

By VGSources Team 12 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A successful payment-provider/game-developer campaign gives players a clear benefit, gives both companies a measurable reason to participate, and launches only after the required rights and platform approvals are secured. Start by agreeing on the audience and objective, choose an easy-to-redeem offer, assign approval owners, build a shared asset kit, then coordinate distribution and reporting. If Steam is involved, allow at least three months for a first third-party sales event.

What a payment-and-game co-marketing campaign is

This is a joint promotion in which a payment company—such as a card issuer, bank, or payment network—and a game developer combine their audiences, content, communications, and incentives. The player sees one proposition rather than two unrelated advertisements: for example, an eligible payment can unlock a top-up bonus, a reward, a game-themed benefit, or access to a branded experience.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The campaign should solve three problems at once:

  • Player value: the reward is relevant, understandable, and simple to claim.
  • Partner value: each organization gains a result it could not obtain as efficiently alone.
  • Operational certainty: rights, eligibility, creative, platform placement, and reporting are approved before launch.

Visa’s 2022 gaming examples illustrate the range of possible propositions. One anonymized bank-and-publisher campaign used bonus top-ups, brand experiences, exclusive rewards, and influencer collaboration. Other examples used game-themed card designs and rewards, or a game franchise’s characters and digital skins. These are examples of campaign mechanics, not promises that a new partnership will produce the same result.

1. Agree on the audience and mutual value

Define the player segment

Write a one-sentence audience definition before discussing artwork. Include the game or portfolio, player lifecycle, geography, payment eligibility, and the behavior you want to change. “Players” is too broad; “new players in the United Kingdom who have not made an in-game purchase in the last 90 days and hold an eligible card” is operationally useful.

List exclusions at the same time. A payment offer may apply only to a particular country, card product, currency, age group, platform, or transaction type. If eligibility differs by market, create separate copy and landing-page rules rather than burying exceptions in a footnote.

Write each partner’s contribution

Use a contribution sheet with one accountable owner per organization. A payment partner might provide a payment-linked discount or reward, cardholder communications, media budget, customer-service support, or campaign funding. The developer might provide player reach, game content, approved characters, in-game placement, creator relationships, or a destination page.

Visa’s anonymized cases show why the exchange must be explicit. Reported objectives included customer growth on a publisher’s platform, increased card issuance and payment volumes, new customers, transactions per card, and increased in-game purchase value. Treat these as categories to choose from, not forecasts. Each partner should state which result matters, how it will be measured, and what it will contribute to make that result possible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a joint proposition statement

Complete this sentence together: “For [eligible audience], [payment partner] and [developer] offer [specific benefit] when the player [required action], available [market and dates], because [shared reason to believe].” If the sentence needs several conditions to be understood, simplify the offer before producing creative.

2. Choose the offer and objective

Offer patterns supported by gaming examples

Offer pattern Player-facing value Possible business objective
Bonus top-up Additional game credit when an eligible payment funds a top-up Increase payment use or in-game purchase value
Exclusive reward A digital item, benefit, or access available through the partnership Acquire or reactivate customers and increase engagement
Game-themed payment design A card or payment product featuring approved game-themed artwork Increase card issuance and payment volume
Franchise content or digital skins Recognizable game characters or skins tied to an eligible action Attract new customers and drive transactions
Brand experience and creator collaboration An event, activation, or influencer-led experience connected to the game Extend reach and strengthen platform engagement

These patterns come from Visa’s 2022 examples. The source reports “double digit growth” for customers of an unnamed bank on an unnamed publisher’s platform, plus “above target increases” in cards issued and payment volumes in one anonymized campaign and in new customers, transactions per card, and in-game purchase values in another. No exact percentages, targets, sample sizes, or named companies are provided, so those phrases should remain qualitative when you describe the examples.

Make redemption easy to explain

Choose one primary action: pay with an eligible instrument, enter a code, claim a reward, or visit a specified page. State when the benefit appears, whether a purchase is required, whether there is a limit, and what happens if a transaction is refunded. Avoid an offer that requires a player to reconcile several portals or support teams.

Set objectives and a baseline

Select a small number of outcome measures before launch. A practical set might include offer redemptions, eligible transactions, new payment customers, in-game purchase value, and qualified traffic to the game page. Record the pre-campaign baseline, measurement window, eligible population, and reporting owner. A baseline is a planning control, not a universal benchmark; the available Visa examples do not establish expected lift for other campaigns.

3. Assign responsibilities, approvals, and timing

Create a responsibility matrix covering the offer, eligibility rules, legal terms, artwork, game IP, customer communications, platform pages, tracking, support, and final publication. Name a decision-maker and a backup for both organizations. Specify who can approve a change and how many business days that approval requires.

Recommended approval gates

  1. Commercial gate: both partners approve the audience, proposition, budget, regions, dates, and success measures.
  2. Rights gate: the developer or rights holder approves characters, logos, screenshots, skins, music, and other game material; the payment partner approves its marks and product claims.
  3. Offer gate: eligibility, redemption, limits, refunds, customer support, and required terms are signed off.
  4. Platform gate: the storefront or event operator approves any requested placement, page, or promotion.
  5. Launch gate: final links, localized copy, tracking, previews, and escalation contacts are tested.

Build a schedule with contingency

For a first Steam third-party sales event, Steam’s official hosting guidance says to plan at least three months. The process includes submitting the event idea, confirming participating titles, staging the page after approval, requesting review, and publishing after approval. Steam says reviews typically take two to three business days; that is a published typical processing time, not a guaranteed service level.

If curated support is desired, Steam’s event rules suggest finalizing participants four to eight weeks before launch. Its promotional calendar fills six to ten weeks ahead, and any additional featuring remains subject to Steam review and approval. Set an internal asset freeze before those dates so late changes do not invalidate a submission.

4. Clear game rights and platform rules

Obtain permissions before promising visibility

Secure written permission for every third-party game asset and brand element before announcing the partnership. That includes characters, logos, title treatments, screenshots, skins, music, creator likenesses, and any material licensed from another rights holder. Steam’s event rules require organizers to obtain appropriate third-party approvals and prohibit promising visibility that has not been confirmed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep a rights register with the asset name, owner, permitted use, territory, dates, channels, required credit, and approver. A permission for social advertising does not automatically authorize a storefront banner or a payment-card design.

Steam sale-event restrictions

  • A third-party event proposal goes to the Steam Events Team. After approval, Steam enables the relevant tools; the organizer confirms participating AppIDs, stages the event, requests review, and publishes after approval.
  • A sale event needs a clear theme and relevant games. When it is described as a sale, a majority of participating titles should be discounted.
  • Do not charge for placement on a Steam sale page.
  • Do not use the sale event page to promote or link to an off-Steam store or website. Sponsor logos may appear in Steam’s designated supporter area, but they cannot contain outbound links.
  • Do not promise automatic or additional featuring. Placement beyond the standard tools is subject to Steam’s review and approval.

These rules apply to Steam and should not be generalized to other storefronts. Obtain the equivalent platform’s current requirements if the campaign also runs elsewhere.

Keep the player experience on the approved destination

If Steam approves a sale page, make the offer accessible to the player on Steam. An external payment page may be appropriate for a separate off-Steam campaign, but sending Steam sale-page visitors away to complete the promotion conflicts with the sale-page guidance. Separate the audiences and destinations in the media plan instead of mixing instructions in one creative unit.

5. Build the shared creative and communication kit

Package assets for every channel

Give both partners a single, approved kit containing the proposition, short and long copy, artwork, logos, terms, eligibility language, tracking links, publication dates, support contacts, and localization notes. Include the file owner and expiry date for each asset. Partners can then amplify the event through their own marketing, social channels, websites, email, and in-game surfaces without creating unapproved variants.

Design a Steam event page correctly

Steam describes a sale event as an announcement and a landing page. Make the event’s purpose immediately clear in the artwork, group games into understandable categories, localize text and calls to action, and preview the page with colleagues before it begins. Follow the image dimensions and placement requirements in the current Steam sale-page documentation; some placements require Valve approval.

Do not put fixed prices or currency claims in Steam-page artwork. Customers see different currencies by country, so a single price printed into an image can be wrong for part of the audience. Put variable pricing in the approved page components or localized copy instead.

Localize meaning, not just words

Translate the benefit, action, deadline, eligibility, and legal qualifiers together. Check that a call to action still describes the real next step in each language. Have a local reviewer verify currency presentation, date format, age wording, and payment-product terminology before publication.

6. Coordinate distribution

Map the channel roles

Assign one job to each channel. The developer’s store page and community channels can explain the game benefit; the payment partner’s owned communications can reach eligible customers; creators can demonstrate the offer; paid media can acquire qualified visitors; and support channels can answer redemption questions. Use the same proposition and dates everywhere, but adapt the call to action to the destination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Steam’s approved promotion tools

Steam encourages organizers to give participating partners a communications or asset kit and to have them amplify the event through their own marketing, social channels, and websites. Automatic placements are not a guarantee of extra featuring. Submit any requested promotional support early enough for the event team’s review and calendar constraints.

Separate on-platform and off-platform advertising

Steam’s advertising policy distinguishes permitted cross-promotional activity and off-Steam paid campaigns from in-game advertising models that the platform does not support. Confirm that the proposed placement fits the policy before buying media or promising an in-game ad unit.

For paid campaigns that drive traffic to Steam product pages, Steam recommends Store Widgets and UTM Analytics. Use a distinct tagged link for each partner, channel, creative, and market so traffic and conversion can be reconciled without exposing personal data in URLs.

7. Instrument measurement before launch

Build a measurement map

Question Example measure Owner and evidence
Did eligible players see the offer? Reach, impressions, landing-page visits Channel owners and tagged traffic reports
Did players act on it? Claims, redemptions, eligible transactions Offer or payment reporting
Did it change payment behavior? New customers, card issuance, transactions per card, payment volume Payment partner’s agreed aggregate report
Did it change game commerce? Top-ups, in-game purchase value, qualified store-page visits Developer and storefront reports
Did it meet the joint objective? Result versus the pre-launch baseline and target Joint review using the agreed window

Visa reports the outcome categories above in anonymized examples; it does not supply a universal measurement method or benchmark. Define the counting rules in advance: whether a refunded transaction is removed, whether repeat redemptions count, how attribution windows work, and how delayed transactions are handled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect privacy and data boundaries

Share aggregated campaign results unless a documented, lawful arrangement permits something more specific. Decide which partner owns customer support, what data each partner may receive, retention periods, and how deletion or consent requests are handled. The available platform and case-study guidance does not establish jurisdiction-specific privacy or financial-promotion requirements, so obtain qualified legal review for the actual markets and offer terms.

8. A launch runbook

  1. Document the brief: record the audience, player benefit, regions, dates, eligibility, budget, owners, and primary objective.
  2. Test the mechanics: complete the payment, claim, top-up, code, or reward flow with test accounts and confirm what the player sees after each step.
  3. Lock rights: attach written approvals for game IP, payment marks, creator content, and every channel-specific use.
  4. Submit platform materials: send the Steam event proposal and required page assets, then track approval status and requested changes.
  5. Prepare the kit: distribute final copy, artwork, terms, localized versions, tracking links, and a publication calendar to every partner.
  6. Preview destinations: check the Steam announcement and landing page, game store pages, payment-partner pages, and mobile layouts with reviewers from both organizations.
  7. Publish in sequence: launch the destination first when necessary, then release partner communications so players do not encounter a dead link.
  8. Monitor daily: watch redemptions, payment errors, broken links, player questions, fraud signals, and regional anomalies; assign an escalation owner.
  9. Close cleanly: remove expired creative, stop paid media, disable or update the offer, and tell support when redemption ends.
  10. Review results: compare the agreed measures with the baseline, segment by audience, offer, channel, and region, and record the next test.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

9. Compare offer concepts before committing

When two ideas appear attractive, score them against the same decision axes rather than choosing the most visually exciting concept.

Decision axis Questions to answer
Player benefit and redemption Can a player understand the reward and complete it in one obvious flow?
Audience and brand fit Do the payment customers and game players overlap, and does the offer feel credible to both?
Measurable objective Which specific behavior should change, and which partner can report it?
Rights and approval burden How many characters, logos, creators, territories, and platforms require permission?
Geographic and payment eligibility Where does it work, which payment products qualify, and how will exclusions be displayed?
Reach and lead time Which channels can carry it, and can the concept meet platform review and calendar deadlines?
Operational support Who handles failed claims, refunds, fraud, localization, and reporting reconciliation?

A simple reward with broad eligibility may outperform a more elaborate skin or experience if the latter requires lengthy rights clearance or confusing redemption. Conversely, a highly distinctive game asset can justify the additional approval work when the shared objective depends on acquisition or engagement.

10. Common failure modes and fixes

The offer sounds exciting but has no owner

Symptom: partners debate copy while nobody can approve eligibility, rights, or reporting. Fix: appoint one accountable owner and one backup at each organization, then use the approval gates and responsibility matrix.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Creative promises placement that is not confirmed

Symptom: a media announcement says Steam will feature the event before Steam approves that visibility. Fix: describe only confirmed placements and label additional featuring as subject to review.

A Steam sale page sends players elsewhere

Symptom: the page directs visitors to an external store or payment site. Fix: keep the Steam sale offer accessible on Steam and run any external destination as a separate, clearly segmented campaign.

  • Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.

Artwork contains the wrong price

Symptom: a fixed currency amount appears in a global Steam image. Fix: remove fixed price and currency claims from the artwork and use localized, variable page components.

Measurement cannot be reconciled

Symptom: the developer counts purchases, the payment partner counts transactions, and both claim success. Fix: define events, attribution windows, refunds, deduplication, baseline, and reporting dates before launch; use Store Widgets and UTM Analytics for off-Steam paid traffic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Approvals arrive after the media plan

Symptom: a launch date is fixed before platform review, rights clearance, or localization. Fix: work backward from the three-month first-event planning guidance, the typical two-to-three-business-day review window, and the four-to-eight-week participant and six-to-ten-week promotional-calendar constraints. Keep contingency time for revisions.

11. Close the loop after launch

Within the agreed reporting window, publish one joint scorecard. Show the baseline, target, actual result, attribution method, eligible audience, and any material delivery issue. Segment results by offer, channel, region, and player status so a high overall number does not hide poor performance in an important market.

Record qualitative findings as well: which questions support received, where players abandoned redemption, which localization required changes, and whether the reward created unexpected fraud or refund patterns. Decide one of three paths—repeat unchanged, repeat with a specific adjustment, or retire the concept—and assign the next owner and date. Store final approvals and learnings with the campaign record so a future team does not reuse expired rights or outdated terms.

12. Compliance boundaries

Steam’s rules govern Steam events, not every campaign involving a game. Consumer-protection, financial-promotion, card-network, tax, age-rating, privacy, gambling, and advertising requirements vary by jurisdiction, offer type, and audience. The cited Visa examples and Steam documentation do not establish those legal requirements. Have qualified counsel and the relevant payment, platform, and rights teams review the actual campaign before publication.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Build the partnership around one clear player benefit and a measurable shared objective, then treat rights, platform approval, localized creative, tracking, and contingency time as launch requirements—not post-launch cleanup. On Steam, a first third-party event needs at least three months of planning and must follow the platform’s placement, IP, linking, and review rules.
