1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe supported Windows route for a current Conan Exiles Enhanced dedicated server is to install Funcom’s dedicated-server application from Steam’s Tools library, configure the two server INI files, start StartServer.bat or ConanSandboxServer.exe, and forward UDP ports 7777, 7778, and 27015 to the server computer. This guide covers private passwords, firewall and router setup, remote joining, admin access, mods, backups, updates, and recovery.

Choose the right server and game version first
A dedicated server is a separate server process that can remain online when the person who configured it is not playing. It can run on a spare Windows PC in your home, another computer on your LAN, or a rented game-server instance; it does not require buying a physical data-center server.

Before installing anything, identify the branch your group will use. Conan Exiles Enhanced is the Unreal Engine 5 PC version released through Steam on May 5, 2026. Conan Exiles Legacy is the older Unreal Engine 4 branch. Legacy remains available for players who need it, but it receives no further updates, Bazaar access or official-server service. A client and server must run the same branch. A provider that hosts Legacy is not automatically ready for Enhanced, so confirm the exact branch before ordering or migrating a save.
Funcom says Enhanced launched on Steam for PC. Do not promise Xbox, PlayStation, Epic or other cross-play unless the current client, server build and provider explicitly document it for your arrangement.

- Play together or alone: play alone locally or fight for survival and dominance in persistent multiplayer on public servers. You can also host your own server and invite others to join you
Prepare the Windows server machine
Funcom’s current self-hosting instructions are Windows-oriented and do not publish a current Enhanced hardware table. Do not treat the old 2017 technical-manual requirements as current recommendations. Use a 64-bit Windows computer with resources appropriate to your population and settings.
- Plan CPU, memory and disk capacity for your player count, view distance, building density, save size and mods. Running the game client and server on the same PC requires additional headroom.
- Keep several gigabytes free for the server files, logs, updates, database and rotating backups.
- Use a wired, reliable connection whenever possible. A machine that sleeps, changes Wi-Fi address or loses power is a poor 24/7 host.
- Reserve a fixed LAN address before forwarding ports. A DHCP reservation such as
192.168.1.50is preferable to forwarding to an address that may change. - Have two different secrets ready: a player join password and a stronger administrator password.
- Make a backup plan before the first world is created. Save corruption or an incompatible mod is much easier to recover from when you have dated copies.
Linux, Wine and Docker recipes are community alternatives, not the Windows procedure documented by Funcom. Test the exact Enhanced build yourself before relying on one for a persistent world.
Install Conan Exiles Dedicated Server
Steam Tools installation
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Change the library filter from games to Tools.
- Find Conan Exiles Dedicated Server and install it. The Steam application ID is
443030; Steam’s support entry is available at Steam Support. - Open the installation folder. A common location is
C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonConan Exiles Dedicated Server, but Steam libraries can be on another drive.
Do not assume the example path is universal. In Steam, use the tool’s Manage or Browse local files command to locate the actual folder.
SteamCMD installation
SteamCMD is useful on a headless or spare machine where you do not want the Steam client. Download SteamCMD from Valve, extract it to its own folder, open a command prompt there and run:
steamcmd +login anonymous +force_install_dir C:Exiles +app_update 443030 +quit
Replace C:Exiles with your destination. SteamCMD may update itself on its first run. Run the same update command before starting after a major game update, and stop the server first so files are not replaced while in use. The command and app ID are documented in Funcom’s technical manual.
Configure names, passwords and gameplay settings
Stop the server before editing configuration. Shutdown can rewrite INI files, so changes made while the process is running may disappear.

The current Windows server configuration directory is:
ConanSandboxSavedConfigWindowsServer
Set the server name and player password
Open Engine.ini and add or edit:
[OnlineSubsystem]
ServerName=My Conan Server
ServerPassword=ChooseAJoinPassword
The join password is what ordinary players enter. Use a unique value; never reuse the administrator or RCON credential.
Set the administrator password
Open ServerSettings.ini and add or edit:
[ServerSettings]
AdminPassword=ChooseASeparateAdminPassword
Anyone who knows this password can obtain elevated in-game controls, so share it only with trusted administrators and change it if it is exposed.
Set a player limit
Depending on the current build and launcher, the maximum-player value may be exposed in a launcher or command line. A typical example is:
ConanSandboxServer.exe -log -MaxPlayers=16
-MaxPlayers is documented in older Funcom material, but permitted ranges have changed between versions. Check the current Enhanced launcher or build instead of assuming that an historical maximum is still valid.
Other gameplay values belong in the appropriate sections of ServerSettings.ini. Change one group of settings at a time and keep a copy of the file so you can identify a bad value.

Start the server and read its log
Funcom identifies both StartServer.bat and ConanSandboxServer.exe as startup options. The batch file is convenient for repeat starts and preserved command-line switches. For a visible troubleshooting window, run the executable with:
ConanSandboxServer.exe -log
Use the files in the server’s actual installation folder, not a similarly named game-client directory. A normal start leaves the process running and writes logs while the world loads. Launching the dedicated build through the Steam client can produce Steam DLL dialogs; Funcom recommends starting the batch file or executable directly. A DLL warning alone does not prove that the server cannot run, but a process that immediately exits requires checking the visible console.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Open Windows Firewall and forward the router ports
Port forwarding has two separate parts: Windows must permit the traffic, and the router must send traffic from the public address to the server PC’s fixed LAN address. Doing only one is insufficient.
| Port | Protocol | Use | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
7777 |
UDP | Main game traffic | Default game port and configurable. |
7778 |
UDP | Server-browser pinger | Normally game port plus one; Funcom describes it as hardcoded in the normal configuration route. |
27015 |
UDP | PC server query | Default query port for the dedicated server. |
25575 |
TCP | RCON | Expose only if you intentionally enable remote administration. |
| Game port plus the documented offset | TCP | Some mod-download paths | Funcom lists a default offset of 2 and qualifies this by PC storefront/client behavior; do not assume one universal mod port. |
Funcom’s current dedicated-server documentation also notes that the server uses a custom query implementation. Remove obsolete [OnlineSubsystemSteam] query settings rather than copying old guides unchanged.
- Reserve the server computer’s LAN address in the router, for example
192.168.1.50. - In Windows Defender Firewall, allow the dedicated-server executable on the required network profiles, or create inbound UDP rules for 7777, 7778 and 27015.
- In the router’s port-forwarding page, send UDP 7777, 7778 and 27015 to the reserved LAN address. Use the same external and internal port unless you have a deliberate reason not to.
- If RCON is enabled, create a TCP 25575 rule only when needed. Restrict its source address if the router or firewall supports that, and use a unique strong password.
- Save the router configuration and restart networking only if the router requires it.
Do not test an internet port from inside the same LAN and assume the result is valid. Many routers lack NAT loopback. Also check the router’s WAN address: carrier-grade NAT, a modem-plus-router double NAT, or ISP inbound filtering can prevent unsolicited connections even when local firewall rules are correct.
Join the server and prove that remote access works
Test from the same network
- Start the server and wait for the process to remain stable.
- On another computer on the LAN, open Conan Exiles and search for the server in the appropriate browser category, or use the local address where the current client supports direct connection.
- Confirm the name, password and basic settings. A save should appear below the server’s
Saveddirectory.
A same-LAN test proves that the process and local firewall are working, but it does not prove that internet players can reach your public address.

- The Adventures of Conan is an asymmetrical dice game of exploration, sorcery and glorious combat set in the Hyborian age.
- Let your blade be sharp and your heart unyielding, for in the fray, only the bold claim victory!
- Each role brings new challenges and routes to victory
- All of the characters, adventures, and art are drawn from the Dark Horse Comics line of Conan titles, including Conan, Conan the Cimmerian, Conan the Slayer and more.
Test from outside the home network
Ask a friend on a different connection to search for the server. Make sure that friend is on the same Enhanced or Legacy branch and has the same mod set. If the listing is absent, use Steam’s View → Game Servers interface and add the public IP with query port 27015 where supported. Visibility through a query port does not guarantee that gameplay traffic on 7777 is reachable.
Grant in-game administrator access
Join with a normal player account, open the current in-game server-settings or administration screen, choose Make Me Admin and enter the AdminPassword from ServerSettings.ini. Menu wording can differ in Enhanced, so use the current admin screen rather than relying on a Legacy screenshot. Verify that admin-only controls appear, then keep the password private.
Add mods without destroying the save
Mods are a server-and-client compatibility problem, not just a file-copy operation.
- Stop the server before changing the mod list.
- Back up the complete
ConanSandboxSaveddirectory first. - Add one mod at a time during initial setup so a crash or missing asset has an identifiable cause.
- Ensure every player has the same effective mod collection and load order. A different order can be as disruptive as a missing mod.
- Steam players generally obtain Workshop content through Steam. Funcom documents different mod-download behavior and ports for some PC storefront/client combinations, so follow the current platform-specific instructions rather than opening every possible port.
- Removing or reordering a mod can permanently affect buildings, items, NPCs or characters that depended on it. A successful server start does not mean the world is safe to change.
- A Conan update can make a previously working mod incompatible. Delay updates until the mod authors and your backup plan are ready.
The technical manual describes the dedicated server’s Mods folder and modlist.txt. Funcom also publishes an official Dedicated Server Launcher route, but launcher releases and beta channels change; use the current launcher discussion rather than treating an old version number as permanent.
Back up saves and update safely
Enhanced’s server database is:
<ServerFolder>ConanSandboxSavedgame.db
Do not back up only that file and assume every server feature is preserved. Configuration, logs and mod metadata matter during recovery.
- Stop the server cleanly.
- Copy the entire
ConanSandboxSaveddirectory to a dated backup folder. - Also copy
Engine.ini,ServerSettings.ini, any mod list and your startup batch file. - Keep several generations, such as daily and weekly copies, on storage separate from the live installation.
- Test a restoration in another folder or machine before trusting the backup.
- After a crash, preserve the current files before replacing anything with a backup; they may be needed to diagnose what happened.
For SteamCMD, update during a maintenance window:
steamcmd +login anonymous +force_install_dir C:Exiles +app_update 443030 +quit
Stop the running process first, update, review mod compatibility, then start the server and watch the log. Do not overwrite the only backup with a newly updated or possibly corrupted save.
Troubleshoot the failures that matter most
The server does not appear in the browser
- Confirm that client and server are both Enhanced or both Legacy.
- Check that the server process remains open and is not repeatedly crashing.
- Verify Windows Firewall rules for UDP 7777, 7778 and 27015.
- Confirm that the router forwards those UDP ports to the server’s current reserved LAN address.
- Check that another process is not using the query port.
- Look for CGNAT, double NAT or ISP inbound filtering on the WAN connection.
- Try Steam’s server-browser favorite/direct-IP route.
Players see the listing but cannot join
This usually means the query or pinger path works while gameplay traffic does not. Recheck UDP 7777, the forwarding destination, the Windows rule and the actual game-port value in the server configuration. Then verify the join password, branch and exact mod list. A server name or password saved in the wrong INI file can make the process look configured when it is not.
The process starts and immediately closes
- Run the executable with
-logand read the console instead of double-clicking blindly. - Check for another Conan server using the same ports.
- Verify that the installation completed and was updated from the intended folder.
- Temporarily remove or disable the newest mod after preserving a backup.
- Check whether antivirus or Windows security quarantined a server file.
- Launch the batch file or executable directly, not through the Steam client.
The server works locally but not over the internet
That pattern points to WAN networking rather than game settings. Compare the router’s WAN address with the address shown by an external service, inspect for double NAT, confirm that forwarding is on the outermost router, and perform port checks from outside the home network.
Players lose progress or the world rolls back
Stop the server before copying saves, retain multiple dated generations and preserve the current files after a crash. Restore only after checking which generation is healthy. For a branch migration, make a complete copy before changing versions; never experiment on the sole live save.
Run more than one server on one PC
Each instance needs an isolated folder or save/configuration directory and its own ports. Give every instance a distinct game port, the corresponding pinger port (game port plus one), and a distinct query port. Create matching firewall and router rules for each externally accessible instance. Keep separate backups so a test world cannot overwrite the production world. The official Dedicated Server Launcher discussion describes separate folders and port sets for multiple servers.
Use RCON carefully
RCON can support announcements, scheduled tasks and remote administration, but it adds an internet-facing control surface. Enable it only when needed, use a unique long password, restrict source IPs in the router or firewall, and avoid publishing credentials in scripts or screenshots. A VPN or a provider’s authenticated control panel is safer than exposing TCP 25575 to the whole internet.
Self-hosting or renting: which fits your group?
Self-hosting is usually the economical choice when you already own a suitable always-on Windows machine, can forward ports and want direct access to every file. Renting is the practical choice when the host is behind CGNAT, the server must stay online without a home PC, or you value support, control-panel restarts and automated backups.
