What Conan Exiles Enhanced changes for server owners
Enhanced is the Unreal Engine 5 version of Conan Exiles for PC. The dedicated server and every connecting client must run matching versions; a legacy UE4 client cannot join an Enhanced server, and an Enhanced client cannot join a legacy server. Official PC Enhanced access is tied to the Steam build. Players using the Epic Games Store or Windows Store versions can still play solo, cooperative, or private self-hosted games, while Xbox and PlayStation remain on the UE4 version.

Enhanced uses a different server folder and save-conversion process, has higher hardware requirements than a lightweight legacy server, and may require mod authors to update their packages. Decide first whether your group needs a public internet server, a private machine on your LAN, or a rented instance. The installation steps are similar, but administration, port forwarding, backups, and upgrade responsibilities differ.
Check the hardware and network requirements
Funcom’s published 2026 requirements are the baseline for running the Enhanced dedicated server. They are not player-count benchmarks: no authoritative source establishes a guaranteed number of simultaneous players or a universal performance figure. Actual capacity depends on world activity, mods, simulation load, and other services running on the machine.

A dedicated server normally runs without a monitor attached, but the published GPU tier is still the requirement Funcom gives for Enhanced. Treat the minimum specification as a starting point rather than a promise of smooth operation under heavy mod or world activity. Leave free SSD space for the server installation, save data, logs, updates, and at least one backup copy.
Prepare the network
- Give the server computer a stable address on your home network, either with a static address or a DHCP reservation.
- Make sure your internet connection accepts inbound traffic. Carrier-grade NAT, dormitory networks, and some mobile connections prevent ordinary port forwarding.
- Have administrator access to the Windows firewall and the router before you begin.
- Choose strong, separate values for the player password, administrator password, and any RCON password.
Install Conan Exiles Dedicated Server through Steam
- Open the Steam client on the Windows machine that will host the server.
- Open Library, change the library filter to show Tools, and install Conan Exiles Dedicated Server.
- Wait for the tool to finish downloading, then open its installation directory. The exact drive and library path depend on your Steam libraries.
- Navigate to
ConanSandboxSavedConfigWindowsServerinside the server installation. This is where the configuration files used by the Windows server are stored. - Before changing anything, copy the entire server folder to a safe location. A clean copy gives you a rollback point if a configuration edit or update goes wrong.
Do not use the Steam client’s Play button as the normal launch method. Funcom warns that starting the server that way can produce Steam DLL errors. Launch from the WindowsServer directory with the supplied batch file or executable instead.

Configure the server files
Use a plain-text editor that preserves INI formatting. Stop the server before editing configuration files, and keep a dated copy of every working version.
Set the name and player password in Engine.ini
Open Engine.ini in the WindowsServer directory. In the documented online-subsystem section, set the server name and the password that players must enter. Keep the password separate from the administrator password. If you change the game port from its default, record the new value because the pinger port is calculated from it.
Set the administrator password in ServerSettings.ini
Open ServerSettings.ini and locate the [ServerSettings] section. Add or edit the AdminPassword value:

AdminPassword=replace-with-a-separate-admin-passwordDo not reuse the player password. Anyone who knows the administrator value can use in-game administrative functions, so store it in a password manager and do not paste it into public chat or server listings.
Choose a game port deliberately
The default game port is set in Engine.ini under [URL]:

Port=7777You can use a different port by changing that value or supplying the -Port command-line option. If you do, update the firewall and router rules and remember that the browser-pinger port remains one number higher than the game port.
Optional RCON configuration
Remote console access is optional. If you enable it, configure the RCON plugin in Game.ini under [RconPlugin], or provide the port with -RconPort. RCON uses TCP port 25575 by default in the documented setup. Expose it only when you need remote administration, restrict access to trusted addresses where your firewall allows it, and use a unique RCON password.
Launch the server and perform a local test
- Open the WindowsServer directory in File Explorer.
- Run
StartServer.bat. If you need to launch the executable directly, runConanSandboxServer.exefrom the same directory. - Keep the console window open while testing. Watch for startup errors, missing files, or a line indicating that the server has finished loading.
- From a Conan Exiles Enhanced Steam client on the same network, open the server browser and search for the configured name. If the listing does not appear, try a direct connection using the server’s local address and game port.
- Join with a test account, verify the password, and confirm that an administrator can authenticate with the separate administrator password.
- Stop the server from its console before making further configuration changes or copying save files.
Once a local connection works, test from an external connection, such as a phone hotspot or a friend’s network. A successful LAN test proves that the server process is running; it does not prove that the router, public address, or firewall is correctly reachable from the internet.

Open the required firewall and router ports
Create inbound rules for the server executable in Windows Defender Firewall and matching port-forwarding rules on the router when players connect from outside the LAN. Use UDP or TCP exactly as shown; forwarding the wrong protocol is a common reason a server appears offline.

The mod-transfer rule is not a second permanent game port that you should guess. Follow the port-offset behavior documented for your server build and open it only as required. If you move the game port, recalculate the related pinger and mod-transfer settings rather than copying the default numbers unchanged.
Windows firewall procedure
- Open Windows Security and choose Firewall & network protection.
- Select Advanced settings, then create inbound rules for the server executable or the required ports.
- Allow the rule on the network profiles that match the machine’s location. Avoid enabling broad public-network access when a narrower rule is sufficient.
- Restart the server and confirm that the rule applies to the current executable path. Steam updates or a moved library can change that path.
Router procedure
- Sign in to the router and reserve the server computer’s local IP address.
- Create port-forwarding entries for UDP 7777, UDP 7778, and UDP 27015 to that address.
- Add the documented mod-transfer TCP rule when clients need automatic mod downloads.
- Add TCP 25575 only if you enabled RCON and have a reason to administer the server remotely.
- Save the router configuration, restart the server, and test from outside the LAN.
If your internet service uses carrier-grade NAT, a router rule will not make the server public. Ask the provider whether a public IPv4 address is available, or use a hosting arrangement that supplies reachable networking.
Connect players and verify the installation
Every player should update to the same Enhanced build before troubleshooting connectivity. Ask them to search the server browser using the exact configured name, then try a direct connection if the listing is delayed. A direct connection requires the public address and game port, not the private LAN address.

- If nobody can connect, check that the server console is still running and that UDP 7777 is forwarded to the correct machine.
- If LAN players can connect but internet players cannot, inspect the router, public address, ISP NAT, and Windows firewall.
- If the server is visible but joining fails immediately, compare client and server versions and verify that the player password is correct.
- If the listing is missing but direct connection works, inspect UDP 7778 and UDP 27015 and allow time for the browser to refresh.
Add and maintain mods safely
Enhanced fully supports mods, but Funcom notes that some existing mods need to be upgraded for the UE5 version. A mod that worked on the legacy server may cause an incompatible-version message, a startup failure, missing assets, or a crash after an update.

Use one authoritative mod list
- Choose the exact mod collection your group will use and keep its order documented.
- Install only Enhanced-compatible versions on the server.
- Require each client to use the same mods and versions, in the same order where the mod author specifies one.
- Restart after changing the list and test with a fresh connection before announcing the update.
- If startup fails, remove or update the most recently changed mod, then test again. Reintroduce changes one at a time so the conflicting package can be identified.
Do not assume that a client can download an incompatible package successfully. Automatic transfer behavior is separate from compatibility: a file can transfer correctly and still fail to load on an Enhanced server.
Migrate a legacy UE4 server to Enhanced
Migration changes both the installation folder and the save format. Back up the legacy database before updating, and preserve the original server until the Enhanced world has been checked.
- Stop the legacy server cleanly.
- Copy
game.dband the complete server save/configuration directories to offline or otherwise protected storage. Keep at least one copy that the update process cannot overwrite. - Install the Enhanced dedicated-server tool rather than replacing the legacy files in place.
- Note that the folder name changes to Conan Exiles Enhanced Dedicated Server.
- Place the backed-up database where the updated server expects it, following Funcom’s migration layout for the installed build.
- Start the Enhanced server. The existing
game.dbis converted into separate Enhanced save data when the updated server runs. - Stop the server after conversion, make another backup of the newly created Enhanced save data, and then inspect player inventories, settings, structures, and progression in game.
Migration restrictions differ for the Isle of Siptah. Do not promise players that every base, structure, or map-specific object will transfer identically. Keep the original database untouched until the group has confirmed that the converted world is acceptable; if conversion fails or the result is unsuitable, restore the backup and investigate before attempting another run.

Self-hosting is appropriate when you control the Windows machine and network and are comfortable maintaining files, ports, updates, and backups. A rented instance can remove much of the hardware and connectivity work, but provider support for the UE5 build is a current, changeable matter. Funcom says it is working with select hosting providers for Enhanced and directs owners to ask providers for details.

Before paying for a hosted instance, ask in writing whether it runs Conan Exiles Enhanced UE5, which client platforms it supports, how quickly patches are deployed, how mods are installed and rolled back, where backups are stored, and whether a legacy game.db migration is supported. Provider compatibility can change with game updates, so re-check it whenever you renew or move regions.

Backups, security, and routine administration
Back up before every risky change
- Stop the server before copying
game.dbor Enhanced save data. - Keep dated backups before game updates, mod changes, migrations, and major configuration edits.
- Store at least one copy outside the live server directory and periodically test that it can be opened or restored.
- Retain the pre-migration legacy database until the converted world has been accepted by the players.
Limit administrative exposure
- Use different values for the player password, administrator password, and RCON credentials.
- Do not forward RCON unless it is needed. If it is needed, restrict the source addresses in the firewall where practical.
- Allow only the server executable and required ports through Windows Firewall.
- Review the console and log output after updates for repeated authentication, mod, or save errors.
Plan updates
Schedule updates when players are offline, stop the server cleanly, back up the current save, update the Steam tool, and launch it from StartServer.bat or ConanSandboxServer.exe. After an update, verify the server build, reconnect with one matching client, and test the mod list before opening the server to the whole group.

The server reports Steam DLL errors
Close the process and launch from the WindowsServer directory using StartServer.bat or ConanSandboxServer.exe. The Steam client’s launch action is not the recommended dedicated-server start path.
The server does not appear in the browser
Confirm that the process finished loading, then check UDP 7778 for the browser pinger and UDP 27015 for the query service. Verify that the router forwards to the current local IP, not an address that changed after a reboot. A direct connection can distinguish browser-listing problems from a completely unreachable server.
Players time out from outside the home
Check UDP 7777, Windows Firewall, the router’s WAN address, and whether the ISP uses carrier-grade NAT. Test from a genuinely external network; two devices on the same LAN do not validate public routing.
Clients receive an incompatible-version message
Update the client and server to the same Enhanced build. Do not mix UE4 and UE5 installations. If the base versions match, compare the mod list and remove or update any package that has not been made compatible with Enhanced.

Stop the server, restore the last known-good mod list, and reintroduce updates one at a time. Keep the save backup made before the change. If the crash disappears when one package is removed, leave that mod disabled until an Enhanced-compatible release is available.
A migration produces missing or changed structures
Do not overwrite the original legacy database. Stop the Enhanced server, restore the backup only if you need to retry conversion, and account for the special migration restrictions that apply to Isle of Siptah. Inspect the converted world before allowing normal play.
