To host a Craft to Exile: Dissonance server, use the dedicated Craft to Exile [Dissonance] server pack for Minecraft 1.15.2, install 64-bit Java 17, start the supplied script, assign about 4–8 GB of RAM, accept the EULA, and forward the server port if players will connect over the internet. Every player must install the same Dissonance release and loader on the client.

The most common setup mistake is downloading files for Craft to Exile 2, the separate 1.20.1 pack. This guide stays with the older Dissonance Forge release, whose official files page lists version 3.1.9 and a separate server-pack download.

Craft to Exile has more than one major pack. Craft to Exile [Dissonance] is the older Forge-based pack for Minecraft 1.15.2. Craft to Exile 2 is a different project and uses Minecraft 1.20.1 files. They are not interchangeable: a Dissonance client cannot join a Craft to Exile 2 server, and a server folder made from the newer pack will not produce a valid Dissonance installation.
The Dissonance files page identifies release 3.1.9 for Minecraft 1.15.2 and provides a distinct server-pack archive. Select that server download rather than the ordinary client ZIP. The client package is for a player’s launcher; it does not replace the files and startup scripts supplied for a dedicated server.

Version checklist

What you need before installing
Prepare the host computer before extracting any files. A dedicated machine is not mandatory, but the computer must remain powered on and connected whenever friends are expected to play. Running the server and the game on the same computer is possible; it leaves less memory and processor time for the client, so close other heavy applications while testing.
Java runtime
The Dissonance server instructions specifically require 64-bit Java 17. Install that runtime before launching either script. A 32-bit Java installation can prevent the server from using the memory you assign, even when the operating system has more RAM available. If several Java versions are installed, make sure the startup script resolves to Java 17 rather than an older runtime.
After installing Java, verify the active runtime with your operating system’s Java version check. It should report version 17 and a 64-bit virtual machine. If it reports Java 8, Java 16, or a 32-bit build, correct the installation or the system path before proceeding.
Memory
Plan on 4–8 GB of RAM for the server. The project page separately recommends at least 4 GB with custom arguments for the pack. Four gigabytes is a sensible starting allocation for a small group; move toward 8 GB when several players, exploration, dimensions, colonies, or technology systems are active. Do not assign all of the computer’s memory: the operating system and, on a combined host, the Minecraft client also need room.
Storage and folder layout
Create a dedicated, easy-to-find folder such as Dissonance-Server. Keep it separate from your client installation and from any other Minecraft server. A separate folder makes it clear which configuration, world, logs, and mods belong together and prevents an update from overwriting another pack.

Download and extract the dedicated server pack
- Open the official Craft to Exile [Dissonance] files page.
- Select the Dissonance release for Minecraft 1.15.2. The listed release to identify is 3.1.9.
- Choose the separate server pack download, not only the client files.
- Save the archive to a temporary location, then extract its complete contents into the dedicated server folder.
- Do not move individual files out of their extracted directories. Startup scripts depend on the layout supplied by the pack.
After extraction, the folder should contain the server launcher files and the supplied run.bat and run.sh scripts. If neither script is present, you probably downloaded a client archive or extracted only part of the server pack. Download the server archive again and extract it as a complete set.

Start the server for the first time
Windows
- Open the dedicated Dissonance server folder.
- Run
run.bat. - Allow the first launch to create the configuration, libraries, logs, and world folders. The initial start can take longer than later starts while files are generated.
- Read the console output for an EULA request or first-run stop. Do not treat a clean first-run stop as a failed installation; many Minecraft servers stop after creating the required files.
Linux or macOS
- Open a terminal in the extracted server folder.
- Make sure
run.shhas permission to execute, then launch that script. - Wait for the first-run files and configuration to be created.
- Read the console output, complete the EULA step, and start the script again.
Use the script supplied with the Dissonance pack rather than substituting a generic Forge command. The script carries the pack’s expected arguments and startup arrangement. Keep the server console visible during the first launch so you can see whether Java, a missing file, or the EULA is stopping startup.
Accept the EULA and complete first-run configuration
Minecraft requires acceptance of its End User License Agreement before a server can continue. When the first launch creates an EULA file, stop and open that file in a text editor. Change the agreement value to indicate acceptance only after reading and agreeing to Mojang’s terms. Save the file without changing its name or location, then run the same startup script again.
The first successful start also creates configuration files and a world directory. Let that process finish before closing the console. Once the server reports that it is ready for connections, stop it cleanly through the console rather than killing the process. This gives the pack a chance to save world data and makes the next start less likely to encounter an incomplete file.
Configuration approach
Do not replace Dissonance configuration files with files from Craft to Exile 2 or another modpack. The packs use different Minecraft versions and mod sets. Make one change at a time, restart, and keep a copy of the original file so you can undo a setting that prevents startup.

Set memory arguments carefully
The project recommends at least 4 GB with custom arguments, while the practical planning range is 4–8 GB. The exact amount depends on the number of players and the activities they load, so memory allocation is not a guaranteed performance measurement. It is a starting resource limit, not a promise of a particular tick rate or frame rate.
- Start at 4 GB on a host with limited memory or a small private group.
- Use more of the 4–8 GB range when multiple players explore new terrain or use several dimensions and systems at once.
- Leave enough memory for the operating system and any client running on the same computer.
- Change the pack’s supplied arguments rather than deleting them wholesale.
- If the server reaches its memory limit, inspect the console and logs before simply assigning more RAM; a wrong Java version or an incomplete installation can look like a memory problem.
If you edit a startup script, preserve its quotation marks and argument order. Make a backup before editing. A script that opens and closes immediately often contains a syntax error or points to a Java executable that is not installed, so run it from a terminal when you need to read the error.
Make the server reachable from the internet
Players on your home network may be able to connect using the host computer’s local address. Friends outside that network normally need router port forwarding. The Dissonance server wiki directs users to modded-Minecraft Discord guidance for the detailed port-forwarding process because router interfaces differ by manufacturer and internet provider.
Port-forwarding checklist
- Give the host computer a stable local address, either with a reserved DHCP lease in the router or a correctly configured static address.
- Identify the port configured for the Minecraft server. Use the value in the server configuration rather than assuming a different game or pack’s setting.
- Create a router forwarding rule for that port and the appropriate protocol to the host computer’s local address.
- Allow the Java server through the host operating system’s firewall when prompted. Restrict the rule to the required network scope where your firewall supports that choice.
- Start the server and have a friend outside your home network test the connection using your public address and the configured port.
Port forwarding exposes a service on your home network, so forward only the server port, keep the server software updated within the same compatible Dissonance release, and remove the rule when you no longer host. If your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, ordinary forwarding may not work; a managed host or another network-access method may be necessary.
What address should friends use?
Friends on the same local network generally use the host’s private address. Remote friends use the public address supplied by your internet connection, together with the server port when the client asks for it. Never give remote players a private address such as a home-network-only address and expect it to work across the internet.

Install the matching client pack
Each player needs a client installation of the same Dissonance release. The installation wiki lists CurseForge, GDLauncher, and MultiMC as supported launcher routes. Choose one launcher, select the Dissonance 1.15.2 release that matches the server, and let the launcher install the required components on first launch. The launcher then requests a Minecraft account login.
- Install or open a supported launcher.
- Import or select Craft to Exile [Dissonance], not Craft to Exile 2.
- Choose the same release as the server, including 3.1.9 when that is the server’s version.
- Allow the launcher to download Forge, mods, libraries, and other required components.
- Sign in with each player’s legitimate Minecraft account when the launcher requests it.
- Launch the game once before joining so missing files and account errors appear locally.
Every player should use the same modpack version and loader as the server. A mismatch can produce a missing-mod screen, registry errors, a connection rejection, or a disconnect during login. When troubleshooting, compare the displayed pack and Minecraft versions before changing configuration files.
Join the server
- Start the Dissonance server and wait until its console indicates that it is ready.
- Launch the matching client profile.
- Open Minecraft’s multiplayer screen and add the server address.
- Use the local address for players on the same network, or the public address and forwarded port for remote players.
- Connect only after the server has finished loading its world and mod data.
The first connection can take longer while the client and server negotiate the mod list and load resources. If the client reports that a mod is missing or has the wrong version, close the game and repair the launcher profile rather than copying random JAR files from another pack.
Learn the pack’s progression before changing everything
Dissonance changes more than the ordinary Minecraft item list. It includes custom progression, altered recipes and loot, multiple dimensions, and quest chapters focused partly on technology and colonies. New players should not assume that a familiar vanilla recipe or progression shortcut still applies.
The official project page recommends staying in the Overworld until level 15 while learning the Mine and Slash system. Use the quest log as the main source of early objectives. When several players are online, form a party with /slash party; this gives the group a shared way to coordinate the Mine and Slash experience while everyone learns the pack.

A practical first session
- Remain in the Overworld rather than rushing into another dimension.
- Open and follow the quest log to learn the pack’s altered recipes, loot expectations, and progression gates.
- Practice the Mine and Slash controls and build basic equipment before attempting ambitious travel.
- Reach level 15 while learning the systems, then decide as a group when to pursue technology, colony, or dimensional quest chapters.
- Record any custom recipe or progression rule your group repeatedly forgets in a shared note.
Self-hosting versus a managed host
Self-hosting is the direct route described above. The project wiki also describes an Akliz/other-host path that can automate modpack setup. A managed service can be useful when you do not want to maintain Java, router rules, or a machine at home, but support for this older 1.15.2 Dissonance release must be confirmed before paying for a plan.

Choose self-hosting when you want complete file control, already have a suitable computer, and can configure the router. Choose managed hosting when availability, automated restarts, or avoiding home-network configuration is more important than direct hardware control. In either case, keep a copy of the world and configuration outside the active server folder.
Backups, updates, and safe maintenance
Back up the world
Stop the server cleanly before copying its world and configuration directories. A live copy can capture files while they are being written and may not restore correctly. Keep at least one backup away from the host computer so a disk failure does not destroy both the active world and its only copy.
Update deliberately
Do not update the server by replacing one or two mods with files from a newer pack. First identify the target Dissonance release, then update the server pack and every client together. Keep the previous server folder until the new version has started successfully and the world has been tested. A world backup lets you return to the earlier release if a mod or configuration change causes a problem.
Restart and shutdown
Warn players before stopping the server, save through the server’s normal console process, and wait for the process to close. Hard power-offs are especially risky during world generation or dimension changes. If a startup script opens a window and exits, run it from a terminal and save the full error text before attempting repairs.

Troubleshooting common failures
The server says Java is wrong or will not start
- Confirm that Java 17, not an older release, is active.
- Confirm the installation is 64-bit.
- Check that the startup script points to the Java installation you intended to use.
- Run the supplied script from a terminal so the error remains visible.
The client cannot connect because of mod differences
- Compare the server and client pack names.
- Confirm both use Minecraft 1.15.2 and the same Dissonance release, such as 3.1.9.
- Confirm both use the same Forge-based loader.
- Repair or reinstall the launcher profile instead of adding individual files from another pack.
Friends cannot connect, but local players can
- Check that the server is running and listening on the configured port.
- Verify the router rule points to the host computer’s current local address.
- Check the operating system firewall’s Java rule.
- Have a player outside the home network test the public address.
- Consider carrier-grade NAT or a managed host if forwarding is correct but remote access remains impossible.
The server runs out of memory
- Check that the server is using 64-bit Java 17.
- Make sure the host has enough unused RAM after reserving memory for the operating system and any game client.
- Move upward within the 4–8 GB planning range if the machine supports it.
- Inspect logs for a faulty configuration or mod error rather than treating every crash as a need for more RAM.
The wrong files were downloaded
If the folder contains no Dissonance startup scripts, or its files identify Craft to Exile 2 and Minecraft 1.20.1, stop and replace it with the dedicated Dissonance server pack for Minecraft 1.15.2. Do not attempt to convert that folder by mixing files from both projects.
