The reliable way to let Minecraft Java and Bedrock players share a world is to run a Java server and add Geyser as a protocol bridge. Geyser accepts Bedrock’s UDP traffic, translates it for the Java server, and sends the responses back. Install Floodgate as well if Bedrock players should join without owning a paid Java Edition account.

Your exact installation depends on whether the server uses Paper/Spigot, Fabric, NeoForge, a proxy such as Velocity or BungeeCord, or a separate Geyser process. The guide below covers each layout, the required UDP networking, authentication choices, and the failures that most often prevent a connection.

Java Edition and Bedrock Edition do not speak the same network protocol. A normal Java server therefore cannot accept a Bedrock connection by itself. Geyser runs between the Bedrock client and the Java backend:
- The Bedrock player enters the server’s Bedrock address and UDP port.
- Geyser receives that UDP session and translates Bedrock packets into the Java protocol.
- The Java server processes the translated traffic as if it came from a Java client.
- Geyser translates the server’s responses back to Bedrock.
Java players continue to connect to the usual Java hostname and TCP port. Bedrock players use the Geyser listener, normally a separate UDP port. Floodgate is an optional authentication component: it lets a Bedrock account connect without a paid Java Edition account and can provide account-linking features.

Paper or Spigot
This is usually the simplest single-server arrangement. Geyser-Spigot is a plugin, so it shares the server process and can read the server’s connection information directly.
Fabric or NeoForge
Use the platform-specific server-side mod, not a client-only mod. GeyserMC explicitly notes that client-side mods do not work through this setup. Fabric installations also require Fabric API. Keep a copy of the existing mods directory and verify that every mod remains compatible after a Minecraft or loader update.

Proxy networks
On BungeeCord, Waterfall, or Velocity, install Geyser on the proxy. Putting it only on a backend leaves the public proxy unable to translate the Bedrock handshake. Bedrock players should be sent to the proxy’s address and port, just like Java players are sent to the proxy’s Java endpoint.
Standalone Geyser
Standalone Geyser is a separate application. Its configuration has two distinct network roles: the Bedrock listener that players reach, and the Java remote endpoint that Geyser connects to. The documentation example uses 127.0.0.1 and port 25565 for a Java server on the same machine; substitute the backend’s actual address and Java port when they are on different hosts.

Check versions before installing
Compatibility changes as Geyser and Minecraft release new protocol versions. GeyserMC’s current setup documentation says that servers older than version 26.2 need ViaVersion. The same page’s current snapshot documents Geyser-Fabric and Geyser-NeoForge as running only on a 26.2 server. Treat those statements as version-sensitive: check the live Geyser setup and compatibility pages immediately before downloading a build.
- Record the Minecraft server version and, for Fabric or NeoForge, the loader version.
- Download the Geyser build for that platform rather than assuming the Spigot jar works everywhere.
- Add ViaVersion when the compatibility note requires it for an older server.
- After an update, read the new Geyser startup log for protocol or dependency errors before inviting players.
Install Geyser on Paper or Spigot
1. Stop and back up the server
Stop the Java server cleanly, copy the world and configuration files, and keep the backup outside the live server directory. Installing a plugin should not alter world data, but a rollback is essential when several plugins or a version change are involved.

- Download the Geyser-Spigot build that matches the server’s supported versions.
- Place the jar directly in the server’s
pluginsfolder. Do not put it in a nested folder or inmods. - Start the server once, allow Geyser to generate its configuration, then stop and restart it if the platform requests a full restart.
Read the console during startup. A successful load creates a Geyser configuration and reports the Bedrock listener; a dependency or version error must be fixed before networking is tested.
3. Set the Bedrock listener
Open Geyser’s generated configuration and check the Bedrock listener. The documented example uses:

- Address:
0.0.0.0, so Geyser listens on the host’s available interfaces. - Port:
19132using UDP. - Clone remote port:
false.
“Since Minecraft: Bedrock Edition uses UDP, this port must allow UDP traffic,” GeyserMC states in its setup documentation. A TCP-only rule will not work. Do not assign this UDP port to another service such as voice chat or a query listener; each service needs its own available port unless its documentation explicitly supports sharing.
4. Select authentication
Choose authentication before publishing the address:
- Online authentication: keep the documented online mode when every Bedrock user has the Java account required by that setup. This preserves the normal account-ownership check.
- Floodgate: install Floodgate when Bedrock users should join without buying Java Edition. Set the authentication option required by your Geyser and backend versions, restart, and complete account linking if you want Java and Bedrock identities connected.
Do not switch to an unauthenticated configuration merely to get around an account error. Standalone Geyser exposes floodgate, online, and offline authentication choices, but offline mode removes the normal identity verification boundary and requires you to understand the impersonation and permission risks. It is a configuration option, not a general recommendation.
5. Restart and verify the log
Restart the server after changing the listener or authentication settings. Confirm that the Bedrock listener binds to the selected port and that no other process has claimed it. If the port is already in use, choose another UDP port and use that same value in the firewall, router, tunnel, and Bedrock client.

Install Geyser on Fabric or NeoForge
- Stop the server and back up the world,
mods, and configuration directories. - Install the matching Geyser-Fabric or Geyser-NeoForge server-side mod in
mods. - On Fabric, place the required Fabric API jar in the same directory.
- Start once to generate Geyser’s configuration, then stop the server and set the Bedrock listener and authentication values.
- Restart and check the loader log for a missing dependency or an unsupported Minecraft version.
Installing a Geyser mod on a player’s Bedrock or Java client does not provide crossplay. The bridge must run on the server (or its proxy), and the server version must satisfy the current compatibility requirements.

Configure Floodgate and account linking
Floodgate is useful when your audience includes Bedrock-only players. Without it, the online-authentication arrangement expects the account credentials required by the Java-side setup. With Floodgate, Bedrock identities are represented in a way the Java backend can accept, and the project supports account-linking workflows for players who also have Java accounts.
Install the Floodgate component for the same deployment model as Geyser, follow its generated configuration, and use the authentication mode that the documentation specifies for your server. On a proxy network, install Floodgate where its API or network-wide skin support is needed; Geyser itself still belongs on the proxy. Test one Bedrock account and one Java account before opening the server to a larger group, because a mismatch between the backend’s online mode and Geyser’s authentication setting produces confusing login failures.

Local or LAN play
Players on the same local network can use the host machine’s LAN address and the configured Bedrock port. Bedrock’s LAN discovery may show the server automatically, but entering the address and port manually is more reliable when discovery is blocked by a guest network or firewall profile.

Remote play with router forwarding
- Give the server computer a stable private LAN address, or create a DHCP reservation.
- Create a router port-forward rule for the configured Bedrock port using UDP, targeting that private address.
- Allow the same UDP port through the host operating system’s firewall.
- Give players the public address and the Bedrock port. Java players still use the Java endpoint.
Forward only the ports you need, keep the server software patched, and use firewall rules that target the server process or host where possible. A successful LAN test does not prove that an internet connection will work; the router and upstream firewall must pass the UDP traffic as well.

A tunnel service can publish the Bedrock listener when you cannot configure the router. The Geyser documentation lists playit.gg as an option for this situation. Choose a tunnel that supports UDP and map its public endpoint to the local Geyser UDP port. Ngrok will not work for this path because its relevant service is TCP-only, while Bedrock requires UDP.
Test the connection
- Start the Java server, proxy, or standalone Geyser process and wait for the listener to report ready.
- In the console, run
geyser connectiontest <ip> <port>, replacing the placeholders with the address and Bedrock port you want to test. - From a Bedrock client, choose Servers, select Add Server, enter the public or LAN address, and enter the configured Bedrock port.
- From a Java client, connect through the normal Java hostname and Java port.
- Check the console for a Bedrock login, Floodgate identity, and successful transfer to the intended backend.
Run the test from outside your home network when remote players are affected. Testing from inside the same LAN can succeed even when the router lacks hairpin NAT or the public UDP rule is wrong.
Proxy and multi-server networks
For BungeeCord, Waterfall, or Velocity, install Geyser only on the proxy and expose the proxy’s Bedrock UDP listener. Bedrock clients should never be directed to a private backend address that the proxy normally hides. Configure the proxy’s forwarding and server list exactly as you do for Java clients, then verify that a Bedrock player can reach the lobby and switch to a backend.
Floodgate can be installed across servers when its API is required by plugins or when network-wide skin support is needed. Keep the authentication configuration consistent across the proxy and backends; otherwise a player may pass the first handshake and fail when transferred.

Operational checklist before inviting players
- Confirm whether the server is Paper/Spigot, Fabric, NeoForge, proxy-based, or standalone; use the matching Geyser package.
- Verify the Minecraft version against the current Geyser documentation and install ViaVersion when required for an older server.
- Set a dedicated UDP listener, normally
19132, and ensure no other service shares it. - Choose online authentication or Floodgate deliberately; do not treat offline mode as a harmless account workaround.
- Open or tunnel UDP, not just TCP, and test from outside the LAN if remote players are expected.
- Keep Java players on the Java endpoint and Bedrock players on the Geyser endpoint.
- Back up the world and configuration before updating Geyser, the loader, ViaVersion, or Floodgate.
