The reliable way to host a DayZ server is to install Bohemia Interactive’s separate dedicated-server application with SteamCMD, configure serverDZ.cfg, open the exact game and query ports you selected, and launch the server with the supplied executable. The stable dedicated-server app ID is 223350. The DayZ client app ID, 221100, is used when downloading Workshop content for mods.
Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted DayZ servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
This guide covers a clean Windows or Linux installation, router and firewall rules, configuration, BattlEye and logging options, Workshop mods, updates, automation, and the failure checks that matter when a server does not appear in the browser.

What you are installing
A dedicated server is not installed from the normal DayZ client. SteamCMD downloads a separate server package identified by app ID 223350. Players still use the regular DayZ client. Workshop items are downloaded with the client’s Workshop app ID, 221100, and then made available to the server.

App IDs, executable names and configuration keys can change with a DayZ release. If a current Bohemia Interactive configuration page differs from an older example, use the current page’s key names and defaults rather than copying an obsolete file wholesale.

Choose the host and create a safe directory layout
You can host on a Windows or Linux machine. The host needs a stable network connection, enough storage for the server files, logs, persistence data and any Workshop content, and permission to receive inbound traffic on the ports you choose. A machine at home works only if your router and internet connection allow inbound forwarding; a rented virtual or physical machine avoids local power and router dependence but still requires firewall administration.
Windows preparation
Create a dedicated directory such as C:DayZServer and a separate SteamCMD directory such as C:SteamCMD. Use a normal Windows account with write access to both locations. Do not put the server in a location where Windows security software silently blocks executable or log-file writes.
Linux preparation
Bohemia’s Linux procedure requires the 32-bit compatibility libraries appropriate for your distribution before SteamCMD is run. Install those distribution-specific prerequisites, create a user-owned directory such as ~/servers/steamcmd, and download SteamCMD there. Keep the server under a normal account; the official warning is: Do not run the server as
root!
A useful layout keeps the install, profiles and persistent data distinguishable:
~/servers/steamcmdfor SteamCMD on Linux (orC:SteamCMDon Windows).~/servers/dayz-server(orC:DayZServer) for the downloaded server.- A dedicated
profilesdirectory for logs and profile data. - A separate backup location for
serverDZ.cfgand persistence data.
Install SteamCMD and the stable server
SteamCMD accepts a command sequence in one invocation. The important arguments are +force_install_dir for the destination, +login for authentication, +app_update 223350 for the server package, and +quit to exit when the operation finishes.
Linux installation
From the account that owns the directories, run the official-style command:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
~/servers/steamcmd/steamcmd.sh +force_install_dir ~/servers/dayz-server/ +login your_login +app_update 223350 +quit
Replace your_login with the Steam account credentials expected by your environment. A maintained Windows/Linux setup reference also shows an anonymous form:
steamcmd +force_install_dir /home/dayz/server +login anonymous +app_update 223350 validate +quit
Anonymous login is environment-dependent; do not assume it works everywhere. If it fails, use the account-login form from the official Linux instructions. The optional validate operation checks the downloaded files and is useful after an interrupted update or suspected corruption.
Windows installation
C:SteamCMDsteamcmd.exe +force_install_dir "C:DayZServer" +login anonymous +app_update 223350 validate +quit
If anonymous authentication is rejected, rerun the same command with the Steam login method required by your installation. Keep the destination path quoted when it contains spaces.
Confirm the files before configuring
When SteamCMD finishes, verify that the destination contains the DayZ server executable and the supporting files. Do not launch from the SteamCMD directory; launch from the server directory so relative paths for configuration, BattlEye and profiles resolve predictably.
Create and edit serverDZ.cfg
The launch option -config=serverDZ.cfg selects the configuration file. You can keep the file in the server directory or pass an explicit path. The official configuration reference documents the available keys, including steamQueryPort, mission selection and server parameters. Because these keys and defaults are version-sensitive, start from the current reference rather than relying on a copied configuration from an unrelated DayZ release.
Set the decisions players will notice
At minimum, set a recognizable server name, decide whether a join password is needed, establish an administrator-password policy, choose the mission, set the player limit, and choose a query-port value. Keep administrator credentials out of public posts and do not reuse an important personal password.

Write down the game port and query port you select. Those values must be carried consistently into the launch command, host firewall and router rule. A server can start normally while remaining invisible if one layer uses a different number.
Open the game and query ports
DayZ visibility depends on the configured ports being reachable through every network layer. The official examples use -port=2301, while the configuration reference’s default example uses -port=2302. A common community setup forwards UDP ports 2302-2305. These are examples, not universal values: use the port in your own launch command and the query value in your own serverDZ.cfg.

| Layer | What to configure | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| DayZ process | -port=NUMBER |
Use the same game port selected for the server. |
serverDZ.cfg |
steamQueryPort |
Use the query port expected by the server browser. |
| Operating-system firewall | Inbound UDP rules | Allow the selected game and query ports. |
| Router or cloud firewall | Port-forward or security-group rules | Send traffic to the host’s fixed local or private IP address. |
Home-router forwarding
- Give the server computer a stable local address, either with a reserved DHCP lease or a static configuration.
- Create UDP forwarding rules from the chosen external game and query ports to that address.
- Allow the same UDP ports in the host operating system firewall.
- Apply the rules, restart the server, and test from a different network rather than assuming that a test from inside the LAN proves public reachability.
If you use the frequently cited 2302-2305 range, forward that range only when your selected configuration and server setup actually use it. Opening an unnecessary range increases exposure and makes later diagnosis harder.
Launch the dedicated server
Linux command
cd ~/servers/dayz-server/
./DayZServer -config=serverDZ.cfg -port=2301 -BEpath=battleye -profiles=profiles -dologs -adminlog -netlog -freezecheck
Windows command
cd /d C:DayZServer
DayZServer_x64.exe -config=serverDZ.cfg -port=2301 -BEpath=battleye -profiles=profiles -dologs -adminlog -netlog -freezecheck
Change 2301 in either example to the game port you actually configured.
| Option | Purpose |
|---|---|
-config=serverDZ.cfg |
Loads the selected server configuration file. |
-port=2301 |
Selects the game port for this process. |
-BEpath=battleye |
Points BattlEye files to the specified directory. |
-profiles=profiles |
Stores profile data and logs in the named directory. |
-dologs |
Enables the regular server log output. |
-adminlog |
Enables administrator activity logging. |
-netlog |
Enables network-related logging. |
-freezecheck |
Creates a diagnostic dump when the server hangs beyond the documented threshold. |
On the first run, watch the console and the directory named by -profiles. Startup errors, BattlEye messages and network diagnostics are much easier to interpret when logs are kept outside a disposable installation path.
Install DayZ Workshop mods
Mods involve three separate jobs: download the Workshop item, expose its content to the server, and install the signing keys required for client verification. The official Linux example downloads an item with the DayZ client app ID:

+workshop_download_item 221100 1559212036
Replace 1559212036 with the Workshop item ID you intend to use. Run the command through SteamCMD in the location where you keep Workshop content. A typical invocation follows the same SteamCMD pattern:
steamcmd +force_install_dir /home/dayz/server +login your_login +workshop_download_item 221100 1559212036 +quit
The exact destination depends on your SteamCMD and Workshop directory layout. After downloading, make the mod directories visible from the server directory by using the linking or copying method appropriate to your operating system. The official Linux example links the downloaded content into the server tree, links or copies each mod’s key files into the server’s keys directory, and adds the mod folders to the launch command.
Build the -mod argument
List mod folder paths after -mod=, separated by semicolons. Keep the order intentional when one mod depends on another, and use the folder names created by Workshop rather than inventing names that do not exist on disk. A schematic form is:
./DayZServer -config=serverDZ.cfg -port=2301 -mod=@FirstMod;@SecondMod -BEpath=battleye -profiles=profiles -dologs -adminlog -netlog -freezecheck
Every required .bikey must be in the server’s keys directory. Clients need matching, compatible Workshop versions. A missing key, a wrong path, a changed mod ID, or a different load order can produce signature errors or prevent a player from connecting.
Use a repeatable mod update routine
- Stop the server before replacing mod files.
- Download or update each Workshop item with its
221100item ID. - Check that the mod directory linked into the server is the newly updated content.
- Refresh the corresponding
.bikeyfiles inkeys. - Review the
-modlist and load order. - Start the server and inspect the profile log before asking players to connect.
Update the server and automate restarts
Use the same SteamCMD update operation whenever a DayZ server release is available:
steamcmd +force_install_dir /home/dayz/server +login your_login +app_update 223350 +quit
Add validate when you want SteamCMD to verify the installation:

- Lightweight, Classic fit, Double-needle sleeve and bottom hem
steamcmd +force_install_dir /home/dayz/server +login your_login +app_update 223350 validate +quit
Stop the running process before replacing files. Preserve serverDZ.cfg, profiles and persistence data outside any directory that an update script might recreate. Back up the configuration and persistence data before major updates so you can restore a known-good state if a release or mod change causes a problem.
Scripted maintenance
Bohemia demonstrates an update.sh approach and a systemd service pattern for daemonized startup, restart and update workflows. A practical automation sequence is:
- Announce a maintenance window to players.
- Stop the DayZ process cleanly.
- Run SteamCMD with
+app_update 223350, optionally followed byvalidate. - Update Workshop items and refresh their keys when required.
- Start the server with the same configuration and logging options.
- Check the new profile log and confirm the expected ports are listening.
On Linux, a systemd unit can keep the process attached to a service, restart it after an unexpected exit and make startup behavior explicit. On Windows, use a scheduled task or service wrapper that runs under the normal account owning the server files. Whichever platform you choose, avoid running update and server processes as an administrator or root account merely for convenience.
Troubleshoot the common failures
The server runs locally but does not appear publicly
- Compare the launch
-portwith the port in the firewall and router rules. - Compare
steamQueryPortinserverDZ.cfgwith the query-port rule. - Confirm that forwarding targets the host’s current private IP address.
- Check that the operating-system firewall allows inbound UDP traffic.
- Test from outside the local network; some routers do not support reliable loopback tests.
SteamCMD says files are missing or damaged
- Run the command again with
validate. - Confirm that
+force_install_dirpoints to the directory used by the launch command. - Check account permissions and available storage.
- Do not mix files from a different DayZ release or an old server directory without checking the current executable and configuration format.
Players receive signature or mod-connection errors
- Verify every Workshop item ID and downloaded directory.
- Confirm the server’s
-modpaths and semicolon separators. - Copy or link every required
.bikeyintokeys. - Make sure clients use compatible versions and the same required load order.
- Read the profile and BattlEye logs for the first failing mod rather than changing several mods at once.
The process starts and then stops
- Run it from the server directory so relative paths resolve correctly.
- Check that
serverDZ.cfgexists at the path supplied to-config. - Check write permission for
-profilesand the BattlEye path. - Remove a recently added mod from
-modtemporarily to isolate a bad path or incompatible update. - Use
-dologs,-adminlog,-netlogand the profile files to identify the first error.
Self-hosting or managed hosting?
Self-hosting gives you direct control over serverDZ.cfg, Workshop files, BattlEye, scripts and backups, but you are responsible for the machine, firewall, router, updates and uptime. A managed service can handle provisioning, port configuration, scheduled updates, backups and monitoring, but the available controls, support quality, geographic locations, player-slot limits and total monthly cost vary by provider and must be verified before purchase.
| Decision factor | Self-hosted server | Managed server |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | You choose and maintain Windows or Linux. | The provider determines the supported operating systems and image. |
| Configuration and mods | Full access to serverDZ.cfg, Workshop paths and BattlEye files. |
Access depends on the provider’s control panel and policies. |
| Ports and firewall | You configure the host firewall, router or cloud security group. | The provider usually provisions networking, but you still need to confirm the exposed ports. |
| Updates and backups | You write scripts or services and schedule backups. | Automation may be included; retention and restore terms need confirmation. |
| Resources | Limited by your CPU, memory, storage and connection. | Limited by the selected plan and host node. |
| Player capacity and latency | Determined by your hardware and physical location. | Determined by available slots and the provider’s data-center locations. |
| Support | You diagnose logs, ports and updates yourself. | Support scope and response times differ by provider. |
| Monthly cost | Uses hardware, electricity or an existing server budget. | Provider pricing and program terms are not established here and must be checked directly. |
Pre-launch checklist
- SteamCMD installed in a user-owned directory.
- DayZ server app
223350installed and validated if necessary. - Current
serverDZ.cfgcreated with a name, mission, player limit and password policy. - Game port and
steamQueryPortrecorded and matched across the launch command, firewall and router. - Server launched as a normal account, never as root.
-profiles, BattlEye and log paths writable and easy to inspect.- Workshop items downloaded with app ID
221100, linked into the server and listed in-mod. - Required
.bikeyfiles present inkeys. - Update, restart and backup procedures tested before inviting players.
Once these checks pass, the server is ready for players. Keep the configuration, ports, executable options and mod compatibility under review after each DayZ release, because those are the parts most likely to change.
