Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe dependable pattern is to use a Linux VPS as the host, Docker Engine and Compose as the runtime, and a separate browser IDE layer. Choose Coder when you need managed workspaces, templates, and team access; choose code-server when one person needs a lightweight browser-based VS Code environment. Keep the IDE on localhost and reach it through SSH forwarding, or publish it only through authenticated HTTPS with WebSocket support.
Antihost offers VPS plans with one-click Docker, NVMe storage and a 14-day free trial.
Persist the project and IDE configuration outside the container, then define the toolchain in a Dev Container. This keeps a game project reproducible when you rebuild a workspace, change machines, or add another contributor.

Understand the four layers before installing anything
A VPS is only the remote Linux computer. It supplies CPU, memory, storage, networking, and the SSH entry point, but it is not a development environment by itself.
- Host operating system: receives security updates, runs the firewall, and owns the VPS network interfaces.
- Docker Engine and Compose: provide the container runtime and the declarative way to start related services.
- IDE layer: Coder creates and manages workspaces, while code-server provides a browser-accessible VS Code server for a simpler setup.
- Project and configuration volumes: keep source code, extensions, settings, and terminal history when a container is replaced.
Keeping these responsibilities separate makes failures easier to diagnose. A Docker problem is not fixed by changing the IDE, and an editor authentication problem is not fixed by rebuilding a project container.

Choose the right browser IDE
| Option | Primary role | Best fit | Access and environment model |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coder | Self-hosted workspace platform | Multiple workspaces, reusable templates, and team access | Web UI, SSH, VS Code, JetBrains, Cursor, web terminal, and remote desktop; workspaces can use Dev Containers |
| code-server | Browser VS Code server | One user or a small number of projects | Containerized VS Code server with a mounted project; browser, SSH tunnel, or reverse proxy access |
| Gitpod | Infrastructure-controlled cloud development platform | Standardized environments across a cloud, VPC, or on-premises infrastructure | Browser and editor integrations, including SSH configuration; Dev Containers provide the environment model |
Coder documents its supported editor and connection methods in its product documentation. Gitpod describes its platform and Dev Container approach in its documentation, with SSH and remote-development editor details in its editor guide.
Use Coder when lifecycle management matters
Coder is the better fit when a VPS will host several isolated workspaces, when you want a template to define every workspace, or when contributors need different connection methods. Its Docker deployment runs on Linux and documents free capacity of two CPU cores and 4 GB of memory. That is a capacity requirement for the deployment, not a guarantee that a large build, game engine, or asset pipeline will perform well on those resources.
Use code-server for the smallest useful stack
code-server is appropriate when the goal is simply “open this remote project in a browser.” There is less platform machinery to operate: one container, one project volume, and one access path. You still need authentication, encryption, backups, and a plan for updates.
Prepare the VPS
Choose a Linux host and leave headroom
Provision a supported Linux VPS with SSH access, a non-root administrative account, and enough storage for source code, dependency caches, container layers, build artifacts, and backups. Coder’s documented free-capacity figure is 2 CPU cores and 4 GB of memory; treat that as the lower bound for the Coder service itself and size higher for concurrent workspaces or resource-heavy builds.
Before installing Docker, apply the VPS provider’s operating-system updates. Configure the provider firewall and the host firewall so that SSH is reachable and only the web ports you intentionally publish are open. If the IDE will remain private, do not open its container port to the internet.

Record the access plan
- Private plan: SSH is the only public service, and your laptop forwards a local port to the IDE on the VPS.
- Public browser plan: a domain points to the VPS, a reverse proxy terminates TLS, authentication is enabled, and WebSocket traffic is forwarded.
Decide this before creating workspaces. A later change from a private URL to a public URL can invalidate callbacks, workspace links, and editor connection settings.

Install Docker Engine and Compose
Install Docker Engine and Docker Compose using the current official instructions for the VPS distribution. Package names, repository setup, and service-management commands differ between distributions, so do not copy an instruction written for another Linux release.
- Install the distribution’s prerequisites and Docker packages.
- Enable and start the Docker service.
- Give the account that will run your deployment the required Docker permissions, then start a new login session so group membership is refreshed.
- Verify the installation with
docker --versionanddocker compose version. - Run a harmless test container and remove it afterward to confirm that image pulls, container creation, and networking work.
Docker-socket access is a privilege boundary. A process that can control /var/run/docker.sock can generally control the host’s containers and mounts. Keep that access limited to the deployment account and services that genuinely need it.
Deploy Coder with Docker Compose
Coder’s Docker installation guide provides the supported Compose example and the settings required by the server. Use that example rather than inventing a new service definition.
- Create a dedicated directory for the Coder deployment and place the official Compose file there.
- Set the externally reachable access URL in the configuration before creating any workspace. Use the final HTTPS hostname if the service will sit behind a reverse proxy.
- Review the Compose volumes and environment values, paying particular attention to where Coder stores its data and how it reaches the Docker socket.
- Start the stack with
docker compose up -d, then inspect it withdocker compose psand the service logs. - Open the configured access URL, complete the initial administrator setup, and create a small test workspace before importing a large project.
Fix Docker-socket permission errors
If Coder reports that it cannot connect to Docker, check whether the socket exists, which group owns it, and whether the account inside the Coder container has a matching group ID and write access. A non-root container user may need membership in the host’s Docker group. Changing the socket to world-writable is not an acceptable fix because it removes the privilege boundary.

Run code-server for a single browser IDE
The official code-server installation documentation uses the codercom/code-server image. The following pattern keeps the listener private, stores configuration and source code on the VPS, and runs the process with the host user’s numeric identity so files created from the editor retain normal ownership.
- Create a project directory and a configuration directory under the account that will own the files.
- Export the account’s numeric IDs:
HOST_UID=$(id -u)andHOST_GID=$(id -g). - Start the image with a loopback-only publication, the project and configuration mounts, and
--user "$HOST_UID:$HOST_GID". A representative command is:
docker run -d --name code-server
--publish 127.0.0.1:8080:8080
--user "$HOST_UID:$HOST_GID"
--volume "$HOME/.config:/home/coder/.config"
--volume "$HOME/project:/home/coder/project"
codercom/code-server
Use the paths and authentication settings documented for the image tag you deploy. Pin a reviewed image tag instead of silently changing the environment on every restart, and confirm that the mounted directories are writable by the selected UID and GID.
- Check the container with
docker psand inspect startup output withdocker logs code-server. - Do not publish port 8080 on the VPS’s external interface. Reach it through an SSH tunnel or place it behind an authenticated TLS reverse proxy.
Access a private IDE through SSH
SSH forwarding is the simplest secure path when every client device supports SSH. With code-server listening on 127.0.0.1:8080 on the VPS, run this on your local computer:
ssh -N -L 8080:127.0.0.1:8080 user@your-vps-host
Then open http://127.0.0.1:8080 in the local browser. The browser talks to the local end of the tunnel; SSH carries the traffic to the VPS’s loopback interface, so the IDE port does not need to be publicly reachable. Keep the SSH session open while using the IDE, or run it under a carefully managed persistent connection.
SSH forwarding is also useful for administration consoles, database ports, and local-only development services. Forward only the ports you need and protect the SSH account with key-based authentication and the provider’s firewall controls.

Publish the IDE through authenticated HTTPS
If collaborators need a normal browser URL from networks where SSH is unavailable, use a domain and a reverse proxy. The code-server guide documents both Caddy with Let’s Encrypt and an NGINX configuration in its security and reverse-proxy guide.
- Create a DNS record for the chosen hostname pointing to the VPS.
- Configure the proxy to obtain and renew a TLS certificate.
- Forward requests to the IDE’s private address and preserve WebSocket upgrade and connection headers.
- Require authentication at the IDE, proxy, or both. Restrict administrative routes and avoid exposing an unprotected terminal.
- Open the hostname from an external network and verify certificate validity, login behavior, terminal access, file editing, and WebSocket-based features.
“Never expose code-server directly to the internet without some form of authentication and encryption, otherwise someone can take over your machine via the terminal.”

Do not treat a firewall rule as authentication. A port hidden from casual scans is still unsafe if a route, proxy, or later network change makes it reachable without encryption and access control.

A Dev Container describes the tools, runtimes, extensions, and setup commands a project expects. Instead of installing a different toolchain by hand in every workspace, commit the project’s Dev Container definition alongside the source code.
- Create a
.devcontainerdirectory in the repository. - Add a
devcontainer.jsonthat names the environment, selects a pinned base image or Dockerfile, declares required editor features, and lists any post-create commands. - Keep project-specific versions in the definition: language runtime, package manager, compiler, linters, formatters, and command-line utilities.
- Open the repository in the IDE and choose the rebuild or reopen-in-container action.
- Run the project’s normal install, test, and build commands inside the container, not accidentally on the VPS host.
Coder’s Dev Container documentation covers SSH access, web terminals, VS Code integration, port forwarding, and rebuild operations. Those features let a workspace be recreated from its definition without losing the source tree stored on its persistent volume.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Keep secrets out of the image
Do not bake API keys, signing credentials, or private repository tokens into the Dockerfile or committed Dev Container files. Supply them through the workspace’s secret mechanism or an authenticated runtime configuration, and ensure that logs do not print them.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Persist data and control ownership
Containers are replaceable; your project is not. Mount the repository and IDE configuration from persistent storage, and back up that storage independently of the container lifecycle.
- Project volume: source code, local configuration, and any intentionally retained build metadata.
- IDE configuration volume: settings, extensions, and authentication state that should survive a container replacement.
- Dependency and build caches: optional volumes that speed rebuilds but can be deleted and recreated if corrupted.
- Backups: a separate destination or snapshot schedule for source and important configuration; a second copy on the same VPS does not protect against VPS loss.
Use one consistent UID and GID strategy. If files appear owned by root after a container operation, stop editing, inspect ownership with ls -ln, and correct the mount or container user rather than repeatedly using broad recursive permission changes.
Ports, previews, and game-project workflows
Web-based game tools, preview servers, asset pipelines, and test services often listen on additional ports. Keep those services bound to the workspace network or VPS loopback by default. For a private session, forward a needed port with SSH; for a collaborator-facing preview, publish it through the same authenticated HTTPS proxy and remove the route when testing ends.
Document each required port in the project instructions and Dev Container configuration. This prevents a contributor from opening a random firewall port or exposing a development service without TLS.
Troubleshoot the common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Docker commands require root | The deployment account lacks Docker-group access or has not started a new login session. | Check group membership, start a fresh session, and verify with a harmless container. Do not make the socket world-writable. |
| Coder cannot create a workspace | Insufficient free CPU or memory, an inaccessible Docker socket, or an invalid access URL. | Check the documented 2-core/4-GB free-capacity requirement, inspect Compose logs, verify socket permissions, and correct the configured external URL. |
| Edited files are owned by root | The IDE container runs under a different UID/GID than the mounted directory owner. | Run the container with the host numeric identity and repair only the affected project files. |
| Browser shows a blank page or terminal disconnects | The reverse proxy is missing WebSocket forwarding or TLS is being terminated incorrectly. | Test the IDE directly through an SSH tunnel, then verify proxy upgrade headers, HTTPS, and authentication rules. |
| The IDE works locally but not remotely | The service is correctly bound to loopback, but no tunnel or proxy route exists. | Use SSH local forwarding for private access or configure the documented HTTPS reverse-proxy pattern. |
| Workspace changes disappear | The repository or configuration exists only in the container’s writable layer. | Stop the container, mount persistent project and configuration paths, and restore from backup if necessary. |
Operate the environment safely
- Review operating-system and Docker updates on a maintenance schedule.
- Pin image tags and update them deliberately after checking compatibility with the Dev Container.
- Inspect container logs and disk usage before storage fills and prevents new workspaces.
- Re-test SSH forwarding or the public hostname after proxy, firewall, and certificate changes.
- Remove unused workspaces, images, and caches without deleting the persistent project volume.
- Rotate credentials and revoke access for former contributors.
Make the final choice
Choose Coder if workspace lifecycle, templates, team membership, and multiple connection methods justify a platform. Choose code-server if one person needs a browser editor on a VPS and is comfortable managing one container, its volumes, and its access path. Consider Gitpod when the organization needs a standardized cloud, VPC, or on-premises development platform with its own environment and editor integrations.
Whichever layer you select, the safe baseline is the same: Linux host updates and firewall rules, Docker installed from current distribution guidance, persistent project and IDE data, a committed Dev Container definition, and either SSH forwarding or authenticated HTTPS. Never turn a convenient browser URL into an unauthenticated shell on the VPS.
