The reliable small-VPS pattern is a private FastAPI process served by Uvicorn workers under Gunicorn, with Nginx providing the public reverse proxy and HTTPS. Run the NoSQL database privately, keep credentials outside the code, supervise the service with systemd, and verify startup, restarts, proxy headers, database access, backups, and memory before calling the deployment production-ready.

The deployment architecture
A Linux VPS gives you control over the operating system, network rules, process lifecycle, and database placement, but you must operate each layer yourself. A practical request path is:

Client → Nginx (public 80/443) → Gunicorn → Uvicorn worker → FastAPI → NoSQL driver → databaseNginx is the internet-facing boundary. Gunicorn keeps the application supervised and starts one or more Uvicorn ASGI workers. FastAPI handles routing and validation; it does not select, include, or manage a NoSQL engine. Your application must use the driver for the database you chose, provide its URI and credentials securely, and define how connections, indexes, backups, and failures are handled.

Prepare the Linux VPS before installing the app
Create a deployment identity
Do not run the API as root. Create a dedicated deployment user and group, give that account ownership of the application directory, and use administrative privileges only for operating-system and service-management tasks. Keep the application under a dedicated path such as /srv/fastapi-app. The systemd unit, Nginx configuration, and secret file should refer to that same path consistently.

Patch the operating system and limit the firewall
Apply the current security updates for your distribution before exposing the host. Configure the firewall so that only the SSH port you actually use and the public HTTP and HTTPS ports are reachable. If the database runs on this machine, do not open its listener to the internet. If it runs elsewhere, allow database traffic only from the VPS address or the private network path that the database service requires.
Choose the database boundary
Decide whether the selected NoSQL engine is local or managed before writing connection code. A local service should listen on a private interface and use authentication. A remote service should have an allow-list or private-network rule that admits this application host, not every address. The URI, username, password, database name, environment name, and any TLS options belong in protected configuration, never in a committed source file.

Install Python and lay out the application
Use an isolated environment
Inside the application directory, create a virtual environment and install FastAPI with its standard server dependencies. The FastAPI project also documents the equivalent uv add 'fastapi[standard]' project command. A conventional virtual-environment workflow is:

A MongoDB deployment, for example, needs a MongoDB driver; another engine needs its own supported client. FastAPI does not provide a universal NoSQL abstraction, so do not copy pooling, transaction, retry, or TLS settings from one engine to another.
Keep modules importable
A small project can start with this structure:

.venv/The server command uses a Python import string in the form module:app. With the layout above, the object must be available as app.main:app. The object should be created at module scope so Gunicorn can import it reliably.
Define the application object and a health route
Start with a minimal importable application and a health endpoint:

Open and close the database client deliberately
Initialize the NoSQL client during application startup, or through a managed dependency that owns its lifetime, and close it during shutdown. Reusing a process-level client normally avoids creating a new network connection for every request, but the correct pool size, timeout, retry policy, and asynchronous or synchronous interface depend on the selected driver. A health endpoint that only returns a constant proves that FastAPI is running; a readiness check should additionally perform a lightweight database operation when database availability is required for traffic.
Store secrets and environment-specific settings safely
Create a root-owned or service-owned environment file outside the source tree, for example /etc/fastapi-app.env. Restrict its permissions so only the service account and administrators can read it. Typical variables include:

NOSQL_PASSWORD=your-service-passwordThe variable names are yours to define; the URI syntax and credential requirements come from the database engine. Do not print the complete URI or password in startup logs. Rotate credentials through the database and secret-management procedure you use, then restart the service so the new environment is loaded.

Use a localhost smoke-test listener
Before involving Nginx, run the import string on a loopback address and a high port:
cd /srv/fastapi-app
. .venv/bin/activate
uvicorn app.main:app --host 127.0.0.1 --port 8000From the VPS, request http://127.0.0.1:8000/health and confirm a successful response. Exercise at least one endpoint that reads or writes the NoSQL database, then inspect the application output for connection errors, authentication failures, timeouts, and serialization problems. Binding to loopback keeps this temporary listener off the public network.
Do not carry development reload into production
The --reload option is useful while editing because it watches files and restarts the development process. It consumes more resources and is less stable, so omit it from the production service. Production needs a supervisor that starts the process after reboot, restarts it after failure, and provides predictable logs and shutdown behavior.
Run Gunicorn and Uvicorn workers under systemd
Choose a conservative worker count
Uvicorn’s production guidance uses Gunicorn with a Uvicorn worker. Start with a small worker count appropriate to the VPS, then observe resident memory, request latency, database pool usage, and error rates. There is no universal worker number: each worker has its own Python state and may create its own database connections. Adding workers to a memory-constrained host can cause swapping or an out-of-memory kill.

Create a systemd unit
Save a unit such as /etc/systemd/system/fastapi.service and adjust the user, paths, environment file, bind address, and example worker count:

WantedBy=multi-user.targetThe two-worker value is an example starting point, not a benchmark or a promise of capacity. Set it deliberately after checking the VPS memory budget. If you use a Unix-domain socket instead of TCP, make the socket directory writable by Nginx and use the matching socket path in both services.
Enable, inspect, and test the service
- Reload unit files:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Enable startup at boot and start now:
sudo systemctl enable --now fastapi.service. - Inspect state and recent messages:
sudo systemctl status fastapi.serviceandsudo journalctl -u fastapi.service -e. - Request the loopback health URL again and exercise a database path.
- Deliberately restart or stop the process, verify that systemd brings it back according to the unit policy, and then confirm that the application is healthy.
Do not treat a listening port as completion. A service that starts only when you are logged in, loses its environment after reboot, or fails to reconnect to the database is not ready for public traffic.
Put Nginx in front of the application
Keep Uvicorn private
Expose Nginx on the public interfaces and leave Gunicorn bound to 127.0.0.1 or a protected Unix socket. This gives one controlled place for TLS, request limits, access logs, error logs, and upstream timeouts. It also prevents clients from bypassing the proxy and sending traffic directly to the application listener.
Configure a basic reverse proxy
In the Nginx server block for your hostname, proxy to the loopback listener:

}Choose body limits and timeouts for the API’s real workloads rather than copying these example values blindly. Add WebSocket upgrade headers only if the application uses WebSockets; ordinary HTTP endpoints do not need them. Validate the configuration with sudo nginx -t, reload Nginx, and request the public hostname while watching both Nginx and application logs.
Terminate HTTPS and handle forwarded headers safely
Put TLS at the proxy boundary
Obtain a certificate from a certificate service such as Let’s Encrypt, configure Nginx to listen on 443 with that certificate, and redirect plain HTTP to HTTPS after the certificate is working. In this arrangement, the client-to-Nginx connection is encrypted while Nginx-to-Uvicorn may be plain HTTP over localhost. The application therefore learns the original scheme and host from forwarded headers rather than from the immediate socket.

Understand the three important headers
X-Forwarded-Forcarries the client address chain.X-Forwarded-Protoindicates whether the original request used HTTP or HTTPS.X-Forwarded-Hostpreserves the original host when a proxy changes the upstream request.
These headers are assertions made by a proxy, not automatically trustworthy client input. Configure Uvicorn’s forwarded-header allow-list to the actual proxy address or socket peer that connects to the application. For a localhost TCP proxy, that is commonly the loopback address. Do not use an unrestricted wildcard when arbitrary clients can reach the application listener, because an attacker could spoof an apparent address or scheme.
Make the NoSQL connection production-safe
Separate readiness from liveness
A liveness endpoint should answer whether the process can serve requests. A readiness endpoint can perform a short database check and report unavailable when the API cannot complete required data operations. Keep the check lightweight and bounded by a timeout so a stalled database does not consume every worker.
Use engine-specific pooling and indexes
Connection pools, maximum idle time, retryable operations, read and write concerns, transactions, and TLS settings differ between NoSQL engines and drivers. Document the chosen values with the application. Create indexes for the query patterns that the API actually serves and review them as data volume changes. Do not assume that an index or transaction behavior from one engine exists in another.
Plan backups, retention, and capacity
Backups must be restorable, not merely enabled. Define retention, test a restore, and decide where backup data is stored. Monitor database storage, memory, connection counts, and operation failures. If the database shares the VPS, include its memory and cache behavior in the same capacity budget as Nginx, Gunicorn workers, and the operating system. If it is managed elsewhere, monitor the network path and service limits as well as the API host.

- The deployment user owns the application files and the service does not run as root.
- The operating system is patched and the firewall exposes only required public ports.
- The database is private, authenticated, and reachable only from approved hosts or networks.
- The FastAPI object imports successfully from the production working directory.
- Secrets come from protected environment or secret configuration rather than source control.
- Gunicorn starts Uvicorn workers without
--reload. - systemd starts the service after reboot and restarts it after a deliberate failure.
- Nginx proxies to the private listener and its configuration passes a syntax test.
- HTTPS works at Nginx and the application receives correctly trusted scheme and client-address information.
- The health and readiness checks distinguish a running process from a usable database connection.
- Logs are available for both Nginx and the application, and they do not expose credentials.
- Backups, retention, indexes, restore testing, and capacity alerts exist for the selected NoSQL engine.
- The host has enough memory for the operating system, reverse proxy, workers, and database or client pools.
Compare the main deployment choices
Single VPS versus a managed or container platform
A single VPS keeps networking, process supervision, and operating costs under your control, but patching, restarts, scaling, and recovery are your responsibility. A managed or container platform can move some of those concerns into platform configuration, while adding platform-specific networking and deployment rules. The FastAPI application and database lifecycle still need explicit health, secret, and connection handling in either topology.
Database on the VPS versus a managed NoSQL service
Keeping the database beside the API simplifies private networking and can reduce network hops, but one host failure affects both tiers and memory contention is immediate. A managed service separates the failure domain and may provide its own replication and backup controls; you still need a restricted network policy, correct credentials, driver settings, and a tested recovery plan.
Direct Uvicorn versus Gunicorn with workers
Direct Uvicorn is useful for a local smoke test. Gunicorn with a Uvicorn worker is the production baseline for this self-hosted pattern because a supervisor owns process startup and worker restarts. Directly launching a single production process leaves more lifecycle work to your shell or service definition and does not by itself solve reboot recovery.

Nginx TLS versus an external proxy
Nginx on the VPS provides a clear, local TLS and reverse-proxy boundary. An external load balancer or CDN can terminate TLS and distribute traffic before it reaches the VPS, but then the trusted proxy addresses, forwarded-header policy, health checks, and network rules must describe that additional hop. Never broaden the forwarded-header trust list merely because another proxy was added.

Troubleshoot common failures
Nginx returns 502 Bad Gateway
Check systemctl status fastapi.service and the journal first. Confirm that Gunicorn is listening on the exact address and port in proxy_pass, that the service user can read the virtual environment and application files, and that the import string is correct. If you switched to a Unix socket, check that the socket exists and Nginx has permission to connect to it.
The service fails immediately after reboot
Read the boot-time journal and verify WorkingDirectory, the virtual-environment path, and EnvironmentFile. A shell session may have supplied variables that systemd does not have. Use absolute paths in the unit and make sure the database is reachable before diagnosing the API import itself.
The API reports database timeouts
From the VPS, test name resolution and network reachability to the database endpoint without exposing credentials in the command line. Check firewall allow-lists, private-network routes, TLS requirements, authentication, and the driver’s connect and server-selection timeouts. If a local database is used, confirm that it is running and listening on the private interface expected by the URI.
Client addresses or HTTPS redirects are wrong
Inspect Nginx access logs and the application’s interpreted request scheme and address. Ensure Nginx sets the forwarding headers, then restrict Uvicorn’s trusted proxy list to the real Nginx peer. If the application listener is publicly reachable, close that firewall path; otherwise an outside client could send forged forwarding headers directly.
Workers are killed or the host becomes unresponsive
Reduce the worker count, review database pool limits, and inspect host memory and swap activity. A worker increase multiplies Python memory and often multiplies database connections. Keep Nginx limits and request timeouts aligned with the VPS capacity instead of masking resource exhaustion with more processes.
Updating and recovering the deployment
Deploy code changes into the application directory or a versioned release directory, install any dependency changes into the intended virtual environment, and run an import and database smoke test before switching traffic. Restart the systemd service deliberately and watch its journal while exercising the health and readiness endpoints. For schema or index changes, follow the selected NoSQL engine’s migration and rollback procedure; do not assume relational migration tools or transaction semantics apply. Keep a previous known-good release available so a failed restart can be reverted quickly, and verify that backups can restore the data required by that release.
