To set up a new PS5, connect it to a display and power, pair the DualSense controller, join the internet, install the latest system software, and sign in with the correct PlayStation account. Then review security, privacy, family controls, Console Sharing and Offline Play, and transfer or restore your games and saves if you are upgrading from another console.
You need only the PS5, its HDMI and power cables, a DualSense controller, a TV or monitor, internet access, and a PlayStation account. PlayStation Plus, a second controller, a headset, an SSD, and a vertical stand are optional.

What to have ready before turning on the PS5
- PS5 console and the correct power cable.
- Included HDMI cable and a compatible TV or monitor.
- DualSense wireless controller.
- Wi-Fi password or an Ethernet cable.
- Email address, password, and two-step-verification method for your PlayStation account.
- Your old PS4 or PS5 if you plan to transfer data.
- A FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive only if you plan to use a backup or USB update.
- The PlayStation App if you want to use QR-code or remote sign-in.
If you bought a Digital Edition PS5 and later purchased an add-on disc drive, keep the drive available. Sony says the drive is compatible with specific slim CFI-2000 Digital Edition consoles and PS5 Pro, and an internet connection is required to pair it during setup. Check your model before installing one through Sony’s accessories page.
Recommended Free Tools
1. Place and connect the PS5
Put the console on a stable surface with every ventilation opening unobstructed. Avoid cramped cabinets, heat sources, excessive dust, and locations where the console can be knocked over. Use the base or stand arrangement intended for your model. A vertical stand is not universally required; compatibility varies between PS5 model groups, including the CFI-1000 and CFI-2000 slim families.
#1 Best Overall
- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
- Connect the HDMI cable to the PS5’s HDMI OUT port.
- Connect the other end to an HDMI input on the TV or monitor.
- Connect the power cable to the PS5 and a suitable wall outlet or surge protector.
- Turn on the display and select the HDMI input used by the console.
- Press the PS button on the DualSense controller when prompted.
Use the HDMI cable supplied with the PS5 for the first setup. It removes an unnecessary compatibility variable before you troubleshoot features such as 4K, HDR, 120 Hz, or VRR. Those features depend on the display, cable path, game, and—if used—your AV receiver, soundbar, or capture device. Not every game supports every display feature.
If the screen is blank
- Confirm that the TV is on the correct HDMI input.
- Reseat both ends of the HDMI cable.
- Connect the PS5 directly to the TV, temporarily bypassing an AV receiver, soundbar, splitter, or capture card.
- Try another HDMI input or the supplied cable.
- If necessary, use the PS5’s Safe Mode display options after consulting Sony’s PS5 support hub.
2. Pair and charge the DualSense controller
- Connect the DualSense to the PS5 with a USB cable.
- Press the PS button.
- Select your user profile or create a new local user.
- Leave the controller connected while the console updates or transfers data, or charge it before a long download.
The safest first-use cable is the one included with the console or another known data-capable USB cable. A charge-only cable may not support every controller-related operation. Install a controller update if the PS5 prompts you. You can later adjust the built-in microphone, headset, speaker, vibration, and trigger-effect settings under the PS5’s controller and sound settings. Battery life varies with game, headset, vibration, trigger, and controller settings, so do not treat one advertised runtime as universal.
3. Complete the first-time setup
The wording and order of setup screens can change with PS5 system-software updates, but the process normally covers:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Language and region.
- Date and time.
- Internet connection.
- Display calibration.
- Power-saving and rest-mode behavior.
- User creation and PlayStation account sign-in.
- Privacy, family, and data-transfer options.
Do now: connect the display, pair the controller, connect to the internet, update the console, and sign in to the intended account.
Recommended now: enable account security, review privacy, configure purchase authentication, set up family members, and check Console Sharing and Offline Play.
Can wait: game transfers, headset tuning, storage expansion, detailed audio calibration, and accessory setup.
4. Connect the PS5 to the internet
After initial setup, the current path is Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection. Select Wi-Fi or wired LAN and follow the prompts. See Sony’s connectivity guide if the labels differ slightly on your software version.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Use Ethernet when possible for large downloads and console-to-console transfers.
- Use the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band for potentially higher speeds at shorter range; 2.4 GHz may work better farther from the router.
- For a hidden network, choose the manual setup option and enter its details.
- Hotel, dormitory, and public Wi-Fi may require a browser sign-in that a console cannot complete normally.
- The PS5 supports IPv6 but does not support an IPv6-only connection, according to Sony’s internet requirements.
A successful connection test does not guarantee ideal online play. NAT type, router restrictions, DNS problems, and weak Wi-Fi can still affect multiplayer or downloads. Complete the system update before changing advanced network settings. Do not change network settings while a console-to-console data transfer is running, because Sony warns that doing so can cause data loss or corruption.
5. Update the PS5 system software
Open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. If an update is available, choose Update System Software. You can also review automatic-update options so the PS5 can download updates while in Rest Mode. Do not rely on a fixed version number: Sony’s system-software page is the authoritative source for the current release and notes.
If an update download is stuck
- Press the PS button to open the control center.
- Select Downloads/Uploads.
- Highlight the system-software update.
- Select View Error Info.
- Choose Try Again.
Use a USB update only when normal updating fails
Sony’s fallback method requires a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive with about 1.1 GB of free space:
- On a PC or Mac, create a folder named
PS5on the drive. - Inside it, create a folder named
UPDATE. - Download the official update file from Sony’s system-software page.
- Save it inside the
UPDATEfolder asPS5UPDATE.PUP. - Insert the drive into the PS5.
- Turn off the console, then hold the power button until you hear the second beep to enter Safe Mode.
- Select Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device > OK.
Never turn off the PS5 during installation and never use unofficial update files. Sony warns that unofficial methods can prevent normal operation and may affect warranty or repair eligibility.
Do not confuse the options in Safe Mode or Reset Options: a system-software update normally preserves data; Restore Default Settings resets settings without erasing user or game data; reinstalling system software or resetting the console erases console data. The normal first setup does not require a reset.
6. Sign in with the correct PlayStation account
If you already have an account
Sign in with the same PlayStation account you used on your PS4 or previous PS5. Sony says this allows account information such as PlayStation Plus access, trophies, friends, and other details to appear after sign-in. Digital purchases and cloud saves also depend on using the correct account.
Do not create a new account simply because the console offers account creation. A duplicate account can make your games, trophies, subscriptions, and saves appear to be missing.
Sony supports QR-code or remote sign-in through the PlayStation App and mobile devices, which can be easier than typing with the controller.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf you need a new account
Create one on the console, through Account Management, in a web browser, or in the PlayStation App. Use an email address you can access and complete email verification, which may take several minutes. Save the password securely, enable two-step verification, and add a recovery method where appropriate.

Give each regular player a separate local user and, where possible, a separate PlayStation account. This keeps saved data, trophies, recommendations, privacy, and purchases properly separated.
7. Secure the account and review privacy
Before handing the console to another household member, configure:
- Two-step verification and account-recovery information.
- A login passcode for your local PS5 user.
- Whether the console logs you in automatically.
- Who can view your profile, send messages, friend requests, game invites, and voice-chat requests.
- Purchase authentication and wallet controls.
- Spending limits and communication restrictions for children.
A PS5 in a shared living room is not automatically private. Account security and family restrictions need to be configured deliberately.
8. Set up family accounts and parental controls
Create a separate child account instead of allowing a child to use a parent’s account. On the PS5, open Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management > Add Family Member. Sony may then direct you to a QR-code and mobile-device flow; current instructions are available in its family-account guide.
A family manager can control playtime, purchases from the family manager’s wallet, access to games, videos and apps, messaging and voice chat, and user-created content such as broadcasts, videos, and pictures from other players. Age ratings, spending, communication, and playtime are separate controls.
Family restrictions are account and family-management settings, not merely settings on one console. One important exception: Sony does not allow a child account to transfer data during the destination PS5’s initial setup.
9. Check Console Sharing and Offline Play
The first PlayStation account to sign in on a PS5 automatically has Console Sharing and Offline Play allowed on that console, according to Sony. With sharing enabled, other users on that PS5 may be able to play games purchased by that account, and some downloaded content or subscription benefits may be available to them.
This is useful for a household console, but remember that an account can generally have Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled on one PS5 at a time. If you restore a PS5 backup, Sony says the setting is disabled and may need to be enabled again.
If another user sees a padlock on a game, check the purchasing account, internet connection, Console Sharing and Offline Play, license status, and whether the required PlayStation Plus entitlement is active. A locked game may simply belong to a different account.
10. Transfer games and saves from another PS5 or PS4
Prepare the old console
- Sign in on the source console with the same account intended for the new PS5.
- Update the source console’s system software.
- Keep both consoles powered on and nearby.
- Use the supplied power cables where possible.
- Use a wired network connection if practical.
During transfer, do not turn off either console or change network settings. Sony warns that interruption can damage or lose data.
During initial setup
Follow the transfer prompt when it appears on the new PS5. The destination console may restart, and some data can continue transferring afterward. Check progress in Downloads/Uploads.

On the destination PS5, open Settings > System > System Software > Data Transfer > Continue. The source PS4 or PS5 must be turned on. See the official transfer guide for the current requirements.
What transfers—and what does not
From another PS5, supported categories include user and account information, compatible saved data, screenshots, video clips, playable PS5 games, and console settings. PS4 transfer categories and timing differ. After initial setup, PS4 saved-data transfer is limited to the user signed in on the destination console.
- Data already on the destination PS5 is not overwritten by the transfer.
- Only one PS4 or PS5 source console can be transferred to one destination PS5.
- A child account cannot transfer during the destination console’s initial setup.
- Digital games can be downloaded again from Game Library instead of transferred.
- Some games require cloud synchronization, save conversion, or an in-game migration process.
Do not erase the old console until you have confirmed that the correct account is present, saves load, digital purchases appear, valuable screenshots and clips are accessible, and any game-specific migration is complete.
11. Restore saves with PlayStation Plus or a USB backup
PlayStation Plus cloud storage
Cloud saves are useful when you have an eligible PlayStation Plus plan and the old console has already synchronized its saves. They are not a universal replacement for local transfer: cloud storage does not recreate every local user, setting, installed game, screenshot, or video clip.

For a local archive, connect a compatible FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive and open Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your PS5. Sony lists these backup categories:
Rank #3
- Games and apps.
- Saved data.
- Screenshots and video clips.
- Settings.
A USB drive configured as PS5 extended storage is formatted for a different purpose and cannot be used as a console backup in the same way. Trophies are not included in the backup, so sync them before changing consoles. A backup is linked to the PlayStation account; if the user never signed in to PlayStation services, it can only be restored to the same console. M.2 SSD and extended-storage contents are not included in the same backup.
Restore a backup
Use Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Restore Your PS5. The destination’s system software must be the same version or newer than the version used to create the backup. Restoration erases current console data, so do not use it casually during first setup. Do not interrupt backup or restore operations.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.12. Install your first game
- Update the PS5 and sign in to the correct account.
- For a physical game, insert the disc and allow the game to install.
- For a digital game, open Game Library, select the title, and choose download.
- Install the game’s update before playing online.
- Check available storage if installation or downloading fails.
A disc-based PS5 game generally installs to internal storage; the disc remains the license required to play. A digital game is tied to the purchasing account and may require license restoration if it shows a padlock.
PS4-to-PS5 save behavior varies by game. Some titles support cross-save or automatic conversion, while others require an in-game import or a separate PS5-version process. Do not assume that every PS4 save automatically works with every PS5 version.
13. Choose storage only after you need it
Internal M.2 SSD
A compatible M.2 SSD can expand storage for PS5 and PS4 games and media apps, and compatible games can be launched from it. Requirements such as interface, speed, capacity, cooling, and heatsink design can change, so use Sony’s current PS5 storage requirements rather than buying a generic drive from an old specification list.
USB extended storage
Compatible USB storage can store PS5 and PS4 games. PS4 games can be played directly from it, while PS5 games stored there must be copied back to the internal storage or a compatible M.2 SSD before they can launch.
Do not buy storage immediately unless you have a large digital library, multiple live-service games, several users, or a media-heavy capture workflow. First see whether the included storage meets your needs.
14. Accessories that can wait
The first setup does not require extra accessories. Consider them only for a specific use case:
- Second DualSense: useful for local multiplayer or as a backup, but unnecessary for a single-player user.
- Charging station: charges up to two DualSense controllers without connecting them to the PS5; direct USB charging works for one controller.
- Headset: useful for late-night play and voice chat. A PlayStation-branded headset is not required for 3D audio.
- Vertical stand: buy only the stand compatible with your model and only if you want the upright arrangement.
- Disc drive: relevant to compatible Digital Edition consoles if you use physical games or discs.
- Media remote or HD camera: useful for specific media or streaming setups, not normal console setup.
- M.2 SSD or USB drive: worthwhile when storage becomes a real limitation.
As US price signals checked August 16, 2026, Sony listed PlayStation Plus at $10.99 monthly for Essential, $16.99 for Extra, and $19.99 for Premium, with 12-month prices of $79.99, $134.99, and $159.99 respectively. Sony’s US homepage showed the standard DualSense from $74 and PULSE Elite from $149 at that check. Prices and availability can change; none of these purchases is required to complete setup. See PlayStation Plus and Sony’s accessories page for current details.
PS5 setup problems and fixes
No picture
Check the TV input, HDMI connections, direct-to-TV connection, cable, and another HDMI port. Bypass an AV receiver, soundbar, or capture device while troubleshooting.
No internet
Recheck the password, try Ethernet, move closer to the router, and confirm whether the network requires a browser sign-in. A connection test can pass even when NAT or router restrictions interfere with online play.
Cannot sign in
Verify the email address, password, account region, email verification, and two-step-verification code. Check PlayStation service status if the credentials are correct. If purchases are missing, confirm that you did not accidentally create a duplicate account.
Old games or saves are missing
Confirm the same PlayStation account and local user are selected. Check whether the transfer finished, cloud saves synchronized, the game supports the expected PS4-to-PS5 save path, and digital titles are visible in Game Library.
Games show a padlock
Sign in to the purchasing account, check Console Sharing and Offline Play, connect to the internet, restore licenses if necessary, and confirm any PlayStation Plus entitlement is active.
Transfer is taking too long
Large game libraries, screenshots, and video clips can take a long time. Do not interrupt either console. Some data may continue transferring after the destination PS5 restarts; check Downloads/Uploads.
