To run your own PageKite front end on Debian, install the PageKite package, configure a publicly reachable relay with isfrontend, ports, protos and domain, then point backend kites and TLS settings at that relay. You need control of a public Debian host, DNS for the relay domain, TCP 80/443, and secure shared secrets. Most users do not need a self-hosted front end; it is intended for operators who want their own relay instead of, or alongside, the commercial pagekite.net service.

What a PageKite front end does

PageKite has two cooperating roles. A backend is the machine running your private service. It opens an authenticated tunnel outward. A front end is the public Internet server that accepts that tunnel, receives requests for the kite domain, and forwards them to the backend. The front end is therefore a reverse-proxy relay, not merely a second copy of the client program.

A self-hosted front end is useful when you control an Internet-facing server and need control over the relay’s DNS, certificates, authentication secrets, routing policy or operational environment. The official guide describes it as an alternative to, or addition to, the commercial pagekite.net service. If you only need to publish a local development site and do not need your own relay, using the hosted service is simpler.

Requirements before you install

  • A Debian system with a stable public IP address or otherwise reliable inbound reachability.
  • Administrative access to install packages and write files under /etc/pagekite.d/.
  • A DNS name for the front end, such as frontend.your.domain, resolving to the Debian host.
  • Permission to use TCP ports 80 and 443, including any upstream VPS, cloud or data-center firewall.
  • A plan for the kite domains that the relay will accept and a strong secret for authenticating registrations.
  • A certificate and trust arrangement if the relay will terminate or validate TLS.

Do not expose the relay until DNS, firewall rules, certificate names and authentication values are coordinated. A front end is public infrastructure and should be treated like any other Internet-facing proxy.

Install PageKite on Debian

Install the Debian package

On a supported Debian installation, install the distribution package:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install pagekite

The current official download instructions use apt install pagekite. PageKite also publishes its own packages and the standalone pagekite.py program. Debian’s package can be a few releases behind the upstream distribution, so check the version available to your Debian release when a feature or bug fix depends on a particular release.

Know where the daemon reads configuration

The packaged system daemon reads every file matching /etc/pagekite.d/*.rc in lexicographic order. Naming files with numeric prefixes makes the order explicit and lets you separate account, front-end and local-service settings. A practical layout is:

File Purpose Typical contents
/etc/pagekite.d/10_account.rc Account or common PageKite options A working user configuration copied for the system daemon
/etc/pagekite.d/20_frontend.rc Public relay definition isfrontend, listener ports, protocols and accepted domain secret
/etc/pagekite.d/80_backend.rc Local service mapping One or more service_on entries for services on this host

Keep each file readable and restrict permissions where it contains secrets. If you copy a user configuration into the system directory, review it rather than blindly merging unrelated options.

Configure the public front end

Create 20_frontend.rc

Open the front-end configuration as root:

sudo editor /etc/pagekite.d/20_frontend.rc

Add the essential settings, replacing the example domain and secret:

isfrontend
ports=80,443
protos=http,https
domain=http,https:*.your.domain:MakeUpAPasswordHere

These four directives define the relay’s basic job:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • isfrontend switches the PageKite process into front-end mode.
  • ports=80,443 makes the relay listen on the conventional HTTP and HTTPS ports. The host and upstream firewall must allow the same ports.
  • protos=http, https limits the listener to the HTTP and HTTPS protocols named here.
  • domain=http,https:*.your.domain:MakeUpAPasswordHere declares the protocols and wildcard domain the front end will accept, followed by the shared secret used to authenticate tunnel registrations.

Use a long, unique secret rather than the example text. Anyone who obtains the secret may be able to register a backend for the permitted domain, so store it like a password and do not put it in public documentation.

Bind PageKite to one address when necessary

If another service already owns all addresses on the machine, add a host= setting to bind PageKite to the specific local address assigned to the relay. The address must exist on the Debian host, and DNS plus firewall rules must direct traffic to that address. Without an address conflict, leaving the host binding at its default is simpler.

Set DNS and firewall rules

Point the relay name at Debian

Create the DNS record for the front-end name, for example frontend.your.domain, so it resolves to the public address of the Debian server. Test both the record and the address from a network outside the server’s local network. If you use a wildcard for kite names, ensure the names covered by the wildcard resolve in the way your deployment requires; the domain directive controls what PageKite accepts, while DNS still has to lead clients to the relay.

Allow the listening ports

Permit inbound TCP 80 and 443 in every layer that filters traffic:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The Debian host firewall.
  • The VPS, cloud-security-group or hosting-provider firewall.
  • Any edge router or upstream network access control list.

Do not assume that a process listening locally is reachable from the Internet. A connection test from an external network should reach the Debian host after the daemon is running.

Map a local backend service

Create 80_backend.rc

If the same Debian machine also runs a web service that should be exposed through PageKite, create:

sudo editor /etc/pagekite.d/80_backend.rc

The guide’s example is:

service_on=http:192.168.0.1:127.0.0.1:80:

The equivalent command-line form documented by the Debian man page is:

--service_on=proto:kitename:host:port:secret

Read the fields in order:

  1. Protocol — http in the example.
  2. Kitename — the kite name that should route to this service; replace the example value with the name used by your deployment.
  3. Host — the local address where the web server listens, such as 127.0.0.1 or a private LAN address.
  4. Port — the local service port, 80 in the example.
  5. Secret — the backend authentication value when one is required; the example ends with an empty field, so do not treat its trailing colon as a universal secret choice.

Use the actual bind address and port of your backend. If the web server listens only on another interface or on a nonstandard port, configure that value rather than assuming 127.0.0.1:80. Confirm the service responds locally before diagnosing PageKite.

Coordinate backend and front-end credentials

The backend’s registration values must match the front end’s accepted domain and shared secret. A typo in the kite name, protocol or secret can look like a network failure even when both processes are running. Keep the front-end declaration and backend mapping under change control so that a later edit to one side does not silently invalidate the tunnel.

Configure TLS certificates

Provide the front-end certificate

The official configuration uses a PEM file on the front end and associates it with the relay name:

tls_endpoint=frontend.your.domain:/path/to/frontend.pem

Replace the path with the protected PEM file used by your installation. The certificate’s name must cover the hostname clients and backends actually use. Protect the private key portion with restrictive filesystem permissions and limit administrative access to the Debian host.

Tell backends which endpoint and trust root to use

A backend can be configured with the corresponding endpoint, expected certificate name and CA bundle:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
frontend=frontend.your.domain:443
fe_certname=frontend.your.domain
ca_certs=/etc/pagekite.d/site-cert.pem
  • frontend identifies the relay host and port.
  • fe_certname is the certificate name the backend expects to see.
  • ca_certs points to the trust bundle used to validate the relay certificate.

All three values must describe the same deployment. A certificate for one hostname combined with a different endpoint or an unrelated CA bundle will fail validation. Install the CA file at the path you specify, verify that the daemon account can read it, and do not weaken verification merely to bypass a naming error.

Start and reload the daemon

Restart after configuration changes

After creating or editing the .rc files, restart PageKite so it rereads them. The package documentation shows the systemd form:

sudo systemctl restart pagekite

On Debian and Ubuntu systems, the service can also be restarted with:

sudo invoke-rc.d pagekite restart

Use the service manager’s status output immediately afterward to catch syntax, permission or bind errors. A successful restart only proves that the process started; it does not prove that DNS, authentication, TLS or backend routing works end to end.

Verify in layers

  1. Check that the relay name resolves to the expected public address.
  2. Confirm PageKite is listening on the configured local ports and that no competing service owns them.
  3. Test the backend service directly on its local address and port.
  4. Start or reconnect the backend and check for an authenticated tunnel registration.
  5. Connect to the kite hostname from an external network over the intended protocol.
  6. For HTTPS, verify that the presented certificate name and trust chain match the hostname used by the client.

Testing in this order separates DNS and firewall problems from local-service, authentication and certificate problems.

Diagnose failures interactively

Run PageKite in the foreground

When the packaged daemon log is not enough, stop the service and run PageKite interactively with the same configuration directory:

sudo pagekite --clean --optdir=/etc/pagekite.d

The --clean option starts without stale runtime state, while --optdir=/etc/pagekite.d tells the command where the system configuration files live. Foreground output makes option parsing and connection attempts visible while you reproduce the failure.

Increase diagnostic output

Add the logging options recommended by the guide when you need more detail:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sudo pagekite --clean --optdir=/etc/pagekite.d --logfile=stdio --debugio

--logfile=stdio keeps logs on the terminal, and --debugio provides additional connection-level information. Stop the interactive process before starting the managed service again so that both instances do not compete for the same ports.

Read the packaged log

The packaged service writes to:

/var/log/pagekite/pagekite.log

Inspect this file after a restart and after an external request. Look for a listener bind failure, rejected registration, certificate-name or trust error, and inability to connect to the local backend. Each points to a different layer of the setup, so fix the first concrete error rather than changing several settings at once.

Common configuration problems and fixes

The daemon will not start

  • Check that 20_frontend.rc contains valid option syntax and that numeric prefixes have not produced an unintended override.
  • Verify that ports 80 and 443 are not already occupied. If they are, either stop the competing listener or use the documented host= binding where the address layout permits it.
  • Confirm the certificate and configuration files are readable by the account running the service, while private keys remain protected.

The relay is running but unreachable

  • Resolve the relay hostname from an external network and compare the result with the Debian host’s public address.
  • Open TCP 80 and 443 in both host and provider firewalls.
  • Check that PageKite is listening on the intended interface rather than only on an inaccessible local address.

The backend does not register

  • Compare the backend’s kite name, protocol and secret with the domain declaration.
  • Ensure the backend points to the correct relay hostname and port.
  • Use foreground --debugio output to distinguish authentication rejection from a network timeout.

HTTPS fails while HTTP works

  • Check that tls_endpoint names the actual front-end hostname and PEM path.
  • Verify that fe_certname matches the certificate name and that ca_certs contains the issuing trust root.
  • Make sure clients use the hostname covered by the certificate rather than an unrelated address.

The tunnel reaches PageKite but not the application

Test the service directly at the host and port in service_on. Correct the local address, port or protocol if the application is bound elsewhere. A working tunnel cannot compensate for a backend process that is stopped or listening on a different interface.

Security and ongoing operations

  • Use a different strong secret for each domain or trust boundary where practical; never leave the sample secret in production.
  • Limit permissions on files containing shared secrets, certificates and private keys.
  • Keep Debian and PageKite packages maintained, and review changes to every file under /etc/pagekite.d/.
  • Monitor the PageKite log and host resources, especially after adding domains or protocols.
  • Document who controls DNS, the certificate renewal process, firewall rules and emergency secret rotation.
  • Remove unused domain declarations and backend mappings so the public relay exposes only intended services.

Running a front end makes you responsible for the relay’s public attack surface and availability. The Debian man page explicitly calls for security consideration when the service is exposed publicly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Capacity, scaling and cost considerations

There is no current universal throughput or connection limit published for a Debian PageKite front end in the reviewed official documentation. Capacity depends on the host’s CPU and memory, network path, protocol mix, number of active tunnels and configuration. Do not advertise a fixed user or bandwidth limit from the sample configuration.

A self-hosted relay shifts responsibility from a hosted service to you. You pay for and maintain the public host, DNS and certificates, choose the relay policy, and handle monitoring and scaling. A hosted front end removes most server operations but gives you less control over the relay environment.

Consideration Self-hosted Debian front end Commercial PageKite front end
DNS and certificates You control names, certificate files, trust roots and renewal. The provider manages the relay environment; control depends on its service options.
Operational work You install, patch, monitor, troubleshoot and secure the public server. The provider operates the front end, reducing your server administration.
Public-host cost You supply the Internet-facing Debian host and its network capacity. Costs follow the provider’s service terms rather than your own VPS bill.
Scaling You size and expand the host or relay topology as demand changes. The provider handles capacity within the limits of the selected service.
Custom relay policy Best when you need control over accepted domains, secrets and placement. Best when convenience matters more than running your own relay.

The available documentation does not provide a numerical performance comparison between these approaches, so choose based on control and operational responsibility rather than an assumed benchmark.

Configuration checklist

  1. Install PageKite with sudo apt install pagekite and note whether your Debian repository version is behind upstream.
  2. Place system-daemon settings in /etc/pagekite.d/ with intentional numeric filenames.
  3. Set isfrontend, ports=80,443, protos=http, https and a real wildcard domain secret in 20_frontend.rc.
  4. Set service_on in 80_backend.rc only for services that are actually listening at the specified local address and port.
  5. Point DNS at the relay and open TCP 80/443 through every firewall layer.
  6. Configure tls_endpoint on the front end and matching frontend, fe_certname and ca_certs values on backends that use TLS.
  7. Restart with systemctl or invoke-rc.d, then test DNS, listeners, registration, local service access and external requests in that order.
  8. Use --clean --optdir=/etc/pagekite.d --logfile=stdio --debugio and /var/log/pagekite/pagekite.log for diagnosis.

The Bottom Line

A reliable Debian PageKite front end is mostly a coordination exercise: public DNS and ports must reach the relay, the front-end domain secret must match backend registration, and every TLS hostname and trust file must agree. Once those pieces are correct, the packaged daemon and ordered /etc/pagekite.d/*.rc files provide a maintainable self-hosted relay.
