A Pixelmon Reforged server is a modded Minecraft server, so every player must use a client that matches the server’s Minecraft version, Forge build and Pixelmon build. Install the matching Forge server, place the Pixelmon mod in the server’s mods directory, start it once to generate files, then change settings on the server—not in a player’s client menu. Treat admin permissions as version-specific: current Pixelmon Reforged permission commands were not confirmed in the available documentation, so verify them against the documentation for your exact release before opening the server.

What you need before installing

Decide the exact Pixelmon Reforged release and Minecraft version first. Pixelmon is not a plug-and-play server jar: it depends on Minecraft Forge, and the Forge version used by the server must match the Forge version used by every connecting client. The Forge build must also be the one required by your Pixelmon build. A server that is merely “close” in version can fail to start or reject clients.

  • A dedicated machine or a game-server host: You need permission to upload files, run a Java server process and read its logs.
  • The Minecraft version supported by your Pixelmon release: Do not choose a Minecraft version from memory; check the release information supplied with the Pixelmon download.
  • The matching Forge installer: Use its server-installation option rather than installing Forge only in a client launcher.
  • The Pixelmon Reforged server mod file: Download the build that explicitly targets your chosen Minecraft and Forge versions.
  • A matching client installation for each player: Every player needs the same Minecraft version, Forge version and Pixelmon mod build as the server.
  • Backups and log access: Keep a copy of the world and configuration before changing settings.

Forum headers have referenced Pixelmon Reforged versions such as 1.21.1-9.3.9 and 1.16.5-9.1.13. Those headers are not a compatibility matrix or a guarantee that either build is current. Confirm the current release and its supported Forge version on the official Pixelmon download and wiki pages before installing.

Install the Forge server

1. Create a clean server directory

Make a new directory dedicated to this server. Avoid mixing it with an existing vanilla world or another modpack. On a host, this is normally the instance’s root directory; on a self-hosted machine, it is the folder from which you will run the server. Give the directory a name that includes the Minecraft and Pixelmon versions, such as pixelmon-mc-version, so an upgrade does not accidentally overwrite the old instance.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Run the Forge installer in server mode

Run the Forge installer for the Minecraft version required by Pixelmon and select the option that installs a server. The installer creates the Forge server files and the libraries it needs. Do not launch a vanilla server jar and then copy Pixelmon into it; Pixelmon expects Forge to load the mod.

The exact installer screen and generated launch file vary by Forge release and operating system. Keep the installer’s output together in the new server directory. If the installer reports that the Minecraft version or Java runtime is unsupported, stop there and obtain the runtime and Forge build specified for your Pixelmon release rather than forcing the installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Accept the Minecraft EULA when prompted

The first server launch commonly creates an EULA file and stops until you accept Minecraft’s terms. Read the file, and if you agree, change the EULA setting as instructed by Mojang’s server software. Do not delete the file or bypass the check; a server that has not accepted the EULA will not complete startup.

4. Start Forge once before adding settings

Launch the server using the Forge profile or launch script produced by the installer. The first run creates the standard world and configuration directories. Let the process finish its initial generation, then stop it cleanly from the server console. A clean stop prevents a partially written world or configuration file.

Add Pixelmon Reforged to the server

Upload the mod file

Place the Pixelmon Reforged mod file in the server’s mods folder. With a managed host, use its file manager. With your own machine, copy the file directly into the server directory’s mods subfolder; FTP or SFTP works when the server is remote.

Do not put the file in the client’s mods folder only. The server must load Pixelmon itself. Conversely, each player also needs the matching Pixelmon mod in the client’s mods folder. Keep one known-good copy of the file and record its complete filename, including the version, so you can identify mismatches later.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start the server and read the log

Start the Forge profile again. Watch the console rather than assuming that a running Java process means Pixelmon loaded. A successful startup should progress beyond mod discovery and finish without a fatal dependency or version error. If the server stops, save the complete log before trying random changes; the first “caused by” entry is usually more useful than the final shutdown line.

When Pixelmon loads for the first time, it creates its server-side configuration location. Stop the server cleanly after the first successful startup before editing files. Never edit a configuration while the server is writing it.

Understand where Pixelmon settings live

Pixelmon settings that control a multiplayer world belong to the server. Changing a setting in a player’s in-game menu or local client configuration does not change the behaviour of a dedicated server. This distinction is the most common reason an apparently successful change has no effect: the player changed a local file, while the server continued using its own values.

The configuration directory

The official wiki’s search summary describes a config/pixelmon directory containing .yml files. Other hosting and forum discussions refer to a single pixelmon.hocon file in the server’s config directory. These descriptions may reflect different Pixelmon generations or packaging layouts, and the exact key names were not confirmed for every current release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the files actually generated by your installed build as the authority:

  1. Stop the server.
  2. Open the server root’s config directory.
  3. Look for a pixelmon subdirectory and its generated .yml files, or for pixelmon.hocon directly under config.
  4. Make a backup copy before changing anything. Include the date and the setting you intend to test in the backup name.
  5. Open the generated file in a plain-text editor that preserves punctuation and indentation.

Do not create a file with guessed keys. If your build generated a different filename or format, use that format and consult the release’s official wiki for the matching option names.

Settings you can configure

Pixelmon’s server configuration is intended for world-wide behaviour, not a single player’s display. The documented setting categories include spawn rates, legendary spawn rates, battle rules and loot tables. The precise key names, allowed values and defaults depend on the Pixelmon release, so copy the spelling and value style already present in your generated file.

Spawn rates

Spawn-rate controls affect how frequently Pixelmon entities are selected to appear. Change one related value at a time and test in a quiet area. A very large increase can make a world feel crowded and can add server load; a very small value can make players conclude that the mod is broken when it is simply behaving as configured.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Legendary spawn rates

Legendary spawning is a separate category in the configuration. Treat it independently from ordinary spawn rates. Increasing normal spawns does not necessarily produce more legendary encounters, and changing a legendary value may not be visible until the server has had time to run its normal spawning cycle.

Battle rules

Battle-rule options govern how encounters and player battles behave. Read the comments beside each generated option, if present, before changing it. Keep a written record of the original value so you can restore a known-good rule set after testing.

Loot tables

Loot-table settings can change what players receive. Make changes on a test world first if the server has an established economy or progression path. A loot change can affect balance long after the configuration is restored because items already awarded remain in player inventories.

Vanilla mob spawning

Some setup snippets suggest disabling vanilla mob spawning in server.properties because Pixelmon manages its own spawning. That recommendation was not verified for current Pixelmon Reforged releases. Do not apply it as a universal step. Check the official guidance for your exact build and consider the effect on hostile mobs, farms and any other mods before changing a global Minecraft property.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apply and verify configuration changes

Use a safe edit cycle

  1. Stop the server and make a dated backup of the world and Pixelmon configuration.
  2. Change the smallest possible number of values.
  3. Save the file without changing its extension or text encoding.
  4. Start the server and watch the complete startup log.
  5. Test the affected behaviour in game, then record the result and the file version.

Reload versus restart

A hosting guide reports that /pokereload can apply Pixelmon configuration changes without a full restart. A forum response says that some changes still require a restart. Because these statements do not establish a rule for every current build, use a full restart whenever the option’s documentation does not explicitly say it is reloadable. If you do try /pokereload, run it from an authorized console or in-game account, then check the log and test the setting; a command completing without an error is not proof that every option was re-read.

Recognize a syntax failure

A malformed pixelmon.hocon file can cause Pixelmon to revert to defaults and print a large error in the restart log. This is especially easy to trigger by deleting a brace, quote or separator while editing by hand. If a change appears to be ignored:

  • Stop the server and restore the last backup.
  • Compare punctuation and value types with the generated file.
  • Start again and confirm that the startup log no longer reports a configuration parse error.
  • Reapply one change at a time, preserving the file’s original structure.

If your release uses YAML files instead, the same principle applies: indentation and punctuation are significant, and the generated file is safer than a hand-created replacement.

Make the client and server agree

A player can connect only when the client and server agree on the Minecraft version, Forge version and Pixelmon build. Distribute a short version sheet to players before they troubleshoot networking:

Component Server requirement Player requirement
Minecraft The version required by the selected Pixelmon release Exactly the server’s version
Forge The Forge build required by Pixelmon Exactly the server’s Forge build
Pixelmon The Pixelmon Reforged file in mods The same Pixelmon Reforged build in the client’s mods folder
Configuration Server-side files control multiplayer behaviour Client menus do not override server settings

“Mod mismatch,” “incompatible version” and a disconnect during login usually point to this three-part comparison. Do not solve a mismatch by downloading an arbitrary newer Forge build: return to the Pixelmon release’s stated compatibility information.

Admin access and permissions

Pixelmon administration has two separate layers: ordinary Minecraft operator access and any Pixelmon-specific permissions. The available current documentation did not confirm a reliable Pixelmon Reforged admin-command list or permission-node set. Older search results reference Bukkit and Sponge-era systems, including a 1.7.2 permissions discussion; those instructions are not applicable evidence for a modern Forge server.

What is safe to conclude

  • Do not install a Bukkit or Sponge permission plugin merely because an old Pixelmon guide mentions it.
  • Do not assume that a command from an older Pixelmon generation still exists.
  • Grant administrative power only to trusted accounts, because operator access can affect worlds, players and server files.
  • Verify the operator procedure and any Pixelmon permission commands in the official documentation for the exact Minecraft, Forge and Pixelmon versions you installed.

Testing an administrator account

After following the version-specific operator instructions, test with a separate account or a controlled test player. Confirm only the commands you intend to expose, and remove elevated access while troubleshooting configuration. Keep the console log from the test so you can distinguish a missing permission from a command that was removed or renamed in your release.

General Minecraft operator commands such as /op <username> are widely used in Minecraft installations, but that procedure was not verified here for your Forge and Pixelmon combination. Treat it as a lead to check in the current Minecraft server documentation, not as a Pixelmon-specific guarantee.

Self-hosting or managed hosting?

Self-hosting

Self-hosting gives you direct access to the Forge directory, logs, world backups and configuration. It also makes you responsible for Java compatibility, firewall and network configuration, uptime, backups and recovery after a crash. This approach is practical when you already administer a machine and need full control over files.

Managed hosting

A managed host can provide a web file manager, FTP or SFTP access, scheduled tasks and console controls. The installation sequence remains the same: select the supported Minecraft and Forge versions, upload Pixelmon to mods, launch once, then edit the generated server configuration. Hosting guides from several providers describe this workflow, but provider pricing, performance and affiliate terms were not established here; choose based on the controls and support you can verify for your chosen release.

Questions to ask a host

  • Can you select the exact Forge build required by the Pixelmon release?
  • Can you upload a custom mod through a file manager or SFTP?
  • Can you download full startup logs and world backups?
  • Can you stop the process cleanly before editing configuration?
  • Does the control panel expose the server console for commands such as /pokereload?

Troubleshooting by symptom

The server stops during startup

Check the Minecraft, Forge and Pixelmon versions first. Then inspect the earliest dependency or parsing error in the log. A mismatched Forge build, an incomplete upload or malformed configuration is more likely than a problem with the world itself. Restore the last known-good configuration before changing several files at once.

Players are rejected during login

Compare the client’s Minecraft, Forge and Pixelmon versions character for character with the server’s versions. A client-side-only installation, an extra incompatible mod or a different Pixelmon build can all prevent login. Have the player remove uncertainty by testing with a clean profile containing only the required Forge and Pixelmon files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A setting has no visible effect

Confirm that you edited the server’s generated file, not the client menu. Determine whether your release uses config/pixelmon YAML files or config/pixelmon.hocon. Apply the documented reload command if the option supports it; otherwise restart. Finally, check the startup log for a syntax error that caused defaults to be restored.

Pixelmon loads but spawning seems wrong

Review ordinary and legendary spawn settings separately, then allow enough time for the server’s normal spawning cycle. Do not change vanilla mob spawning automatically; that recommendation is not confirmed for every release. Test in a fresh, controlled area so existing entities and other mods do not obscure the result.

Admin commands fail

Confirm that the account has the operator or permission level required by your exact Forge server. If an old guide names a Bukkit, Sponge or legacy permission node, discard it and consult the current Pixelmon documentation. Record the exact command and error message when asking for help; “admin does not work” is not enough to identify a version mismatch.

Pre-launch checklist

  • Pixelmon’s supported Minecraft version is recorded.
  • The server and every client use the same Forge build.
  • The same Pixelmon Reforged file is present on the server and clients.
  • The server has been started once with Forge and stopped cleanly.
  • Pixelmon is in the server’s mods directory, not only on clients.
  • The generated configuration location has been identified.
  • A backup exists before any configuration edit.
  • Configuration syntax was checked in the startup log.
  • Any reload was verified in game; otherwise the server was restarted.
  • Admin procedures were verified for this exact release rather than copied from a legacy Bukkit or Sponge guide.
  • Players received the version sheet and connection instructions.

Keeping the server maintainable

Record the Minecraft, Forge and Pixelmon versions in a text file beside the server. Keep dated backups of the world and configuration, and change one setting at a time. Before upgrading Pixelmon or Forge, copy the complete instance to a separate directory and test the upgrade there. Never assume that a configuration file from an older layout can be pasted into a newer release; regenerate files when the release notes require it and migrate only documented options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When seeking help, provide the exact versions, the startup log section containing the first error, the configuration filename you edited and whether the server or client was changed. That information lets an administrator distinguish a version mismatch, a syntax error, a permission issue and an ordinary gameplay setting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I run Pixelmon on a vanilla Minecraft server?

No. Pixelmon Reforged requires a Forge server installation. Install the Forge build required by your Pixelmon release, then place Pixelmon in the server’s mods folder.

Why did my client-side Pixelmon setting not change the multiplayer server?

Dedicated-server behaviour is controlled by the server’s configuration files. Edit the generated files in the server’s config directory; an in-game client menu changes only that client.

Should I edit a YAML file or pixelmon.hocon?

Use the layout generated by your installed release. The official wiki summary describes config/pixelmon YAML files, while other guides refer to config/pixelmon.hocon; these may represent different versions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does /pokereload apply every change?

Not necessarily. One hosting guide reports that it reloads Pixelmon settings, while a forum response says some changes require a restart. Use a full restart unless your release documents the option as reloadable, and check the log afterward.

Where can I find current Pixelmon admin commands?

Use the official Pixelmon documentation for your exact Minecraft, Forge and Pixelmon versions. Legacy Bukkit and Sponge permission guides are not reliable instructions for current Forge servers.
