A production Elasticsearch cluster on Ubuntu is more than an installed package: bind each node deliberately, pass the operating-system bootstrap checks, form the first master election exactly once, and keep HTTP and transport traffic secured with TLS. The safest sequence is to prepare supported Ubuntu hosts, install the signed Debian package, configure an environment-specific cluster, bootstrap a three-node control plane, enroll additional nodes, and verify health before sending application traffic.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
Decide what “production” means for this cluster
Elasticsearch enters production mode when you bind it to a non-loopback address. That single change promotes several startup checks from warnings to fatal exceptions. File descriptors, virtual memory, process limits, disk paths, networking, and Java settings therefore have to be correct before the service is reachable from another host. Treat a failed bootstrap check as a configuration problem to fix, not as a message to suppress.

For a self-managed deployment, use dedicated hosts or make Elasticsearch the primary resource-intensive service on each machine. Sharing a host with unrelated workloads makes CPU, memory, disk latency, and failure behavior harder to predict. Keep the transport network private and expose only the client paths that your applications and administration tools actually need.
Elastic documents several deployment models, including self-managed Linux packages, Elastic Cloud Hosted, Elastic Cloud Serverless, and Elastic Cloud on Kubernetes. This guide covers the self-managed Ubuntu package. A managed service changes who operates upgrades, certificates, failure domains, and backups; it does not remove the need to define data durability, access control, and recovery objectives.

Plan hosts, roles, and network boundaries
A practical small production cluster starts with three master-eligible nodes distributed across separate failure domains. Use data roles and node counts that match indexing rate, retention, query concurrency, and shard sizes; the documentation does not prescribe a universal topology. Three voting members provide a safer election quorum than a single master, but they do not automatically provide enough storage or query capacity.
| Item | Default or documented port | Production treatment |
|---|---|---|
| REST and client API | 9200-series | Allow only trusted clients, administrators, and monitoring paths. Require HTTPS and authentication. |
| Node transport | 9300-series | Keep private between cluster members and protect it with transport TLS. |
| Kibana | 5601 | Permit access only from approved users or a controlled proxy. |
Every node must use the same cluster.name within one cluster. Choose a name that is unique to the environment—such as a production identifier that cannot be confused with staging—because accidentally reusing a name across environments can cause an operator to connect to or bootstrap the wrong cluster. Set a unique node.name on every instance; it identifies that particular process and must not be copied unchanged to another host.

Start with Elastic’s current support matrix for the exact Elasticsearch release and Ubuntu version you intend to run. Support can vary by release, so do not infer compatibility from an older installation guide. Obtain the Debian package from Elastic’s repository or its package download, and verify its signature with Elastic’s published signing key before installation.
The Debian package includes a bundled OpenJDK. A separate Java installation is normally unnecessary and can create version conflicts. Keep the package and operating system patched according to a maintenance plan, and record the exact Elasticsearch and Ubuntu versions on every host so an upgrade or incident can be reproduced.
Before the first start, apply the documented important system configuration requirements. In particular, check file-descriptor limits, virtual-memory settings, process limits, disk capacity, and mount options. Run the service once in a controlled window and read every bootstrap-check failure. Once network.host is set to a non-loopback address, those failures prevent Elasticsearch from starting; fix the underlying OS or JVM setting instead of trying to work around the check.
Install the first node and set durable paths
Install the signed Debian package on the first host, then edit /etc/elasticsearch/elasticsearch.yml. A minimal production-oriented starting point looks like this:

path.data: /srv/elasticsearch/data
path.logs: /var/log/elasticsearch
The addresses above are examples from a private network. Replace them with the intended interface or address on each host. Elastic’s examples may use 0.0.0.0, but a production node should normally listen only on the interface needed for client and peer traffic. Set transport.host, or an equivalent transport binding, so the other nodes can reach the node on the private transport network.
Elastic strongly recommends placing path.data and path.logs outside $ES_HOME for production. Use durable storage with enough free space for the retention policy, and ensure that only the Elasticsearch service account can modify the data directory. Do not copy that directory as a filesystem backup: Lucene segments, translogs, and cluster state can be inconsistent while the node is running, and restoring a raw copy is not the supported recovery method. Register a snapshot repository on storage that survives node loss instead.
Bootstrap the first cluster election safely
Set discovery.seed_hosts to the addresses of the master-eligible nodes. During the very first startup of a brand-new cluster, cluster.initial_master_nodes must list the names of the master-eligible nodes whose votes participate in that initial election. The names must match each node’s node.name exactly.
This setting is a one-time bootstrap instruction, not a permanent discovery list. As soon as the cluster forms and cluster state is persisted, remove cluster.initial_master_nodes from every node. Never add it back for a restart, a full-cluster restart, or a node joining an existing cluster. Reusing it can create an unsafe second bootstrap and, in the worst case, an unintended separate cluster.
Start the initial nodes in a coordinated maintenance window. Confirm that the elected master is visible and that all intended members share the same cluster name before putting application traffic on the cluster. If one node was absent during the first election, do not improvise by adding its name later; inspect the logs and correct discovery or connectivity using the existing cluster state.
Enable the service and complete automatic security
After configuration and OS checks pass, enable and start Elasticsearch with systemd:

sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable elasticsearch.service
sudo systemctl start elasticsearch.service
On first startup, current package-based installations automatically create TLS material for HTTP and transport, apply the corresponding security settings, set the elastic superuser password, and generate a Kibana enrollment token. The token is valid for 30 minutes. For Debian installs, use the documented password-reset tool if you need to set or recover the elastic password; the password is not printed by the systemd startup command.
Store the password, enrollment tokens, and any keystore secrets in a controlled secret manager rather than shell history, tickets, or chat. Restrict permissions on certificate and keystore files. Applications should use dedicated least-privilege accounts instead of the all-powerful elastic user. Do not disable authentication or TLS merely to simplify an initial connectivity test.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesEnroll the second and third nodes
Before joining a host, verify that its firewall and routing permit the existing cluster’s transport and HTTP endpoints. Generate a node enrollment token on an existing node:
/usr/share/elasticsearch/bin/elasticsearch-create-enrollment-token -s node
Tokens expire after 30 minutes, so create one immediately before using it and generate a separate token for each joining node. On the new host, pass the token to the reconfiguration utility:
/usr/share/elasticsearch/bin/elasticsearch-reconfigure-node --enrollment-token <enrollment-token>
After reconfiguration, inspect the new host’s elasticsearch.yml. It must have the same cluster.name, a unique node.name, a routable network.host, and discovery settings that point to the existing master-eligible peers. Confirm that the host has the expected certificates and that file ownership permits the Elasticsearch service to read them.
Once the second node has joined, update the first node’s discovery.seed_hosts so it includes the master-eligible peers. Elastic specifically warns that leaving the first node with an incomplete seed list can prevent it from restarting correctly. Apply the same complete peer list to all master-eligible nodes, then restart only during a planned window if a restart is required.

Verify membership, health, and shard allocation
Read the service log when a node does not start:
sudo journalctl -u elasticsearch.service -e
sudo ls -l /var/log/elasticsearch/
Test the secured HTTP endpoint with the CA certificate generated by the package:
curl --cacert /etc/elasticsearch/certs/http_ca.crt
-u elastic:$ELASTIC_PASSWORD
https://localhost:9200
The response should identify the node and cluster over HTTPS. Use the cluster-health and node APIs to confirm that every expected node joined, the elected master is present, and primary shards are assigned. For example:
curl --cacert /etc/elasticsearch/certs/http_ca.crt
-u elastic:$ELASTIC_PASSWORD
https://localhost:9200/_cluster/health?pretty
curl --cacert /etc/elasticsearch/certs/http_ca.crt
-u elastic:$ELASTIC_PASSWORD
'https://localhost:9200/_cat/nodes?v'
Do not treat a green response from one node as proof that the whole deployment is ready. Check the expected node count, roles, shard allocation, disk watermarks, and application indexes. Investigate any unassigned primary shard before accepting production writes; a replica can remain temporarily unassigned during relocation, but an unassigned primary indicates data availability risk.
Backups, restores, and routine operations
Configure a supported snapshot repository on storage independent of the cluster’s data disks. Schedule snapshots or snapshot lifecycle management according to the business recovery point objective, and monitor repository failures as operational incidents. A snapshot is useful only if it can be restored, so perform regular restore tests in an isolated environment and document the time required to recover indexes, templates, users, and other required cluster objects.

Elasticsearch stops at startup after setting network.host
This is usually a bootstrap-check failure. Read the first fatal check in the log, then apply the corresponding documented file-descriptor, virtual-memory, process-limit, or filesystem change. Restart only after the operating-system setting is active for the systemd service. Binding to loopback to hide the warning is not a production fix.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Nodes form separate clusters
Check that every node uses the identical environment-specific cluster.name, that transport addresses are reachable, and that the seed list contains addresses of master-eligible peers. If the cluster has already formed, remove cluster.initial_master_nodes; do not try to repair discovery by adding it back. Inspect logs for the cluster UUID and verify that the node is joining the intended environment.
A new node cannot enroll
Confirm that the token is less than 30 minutes old, that the new host can reach the existing node over the required paths, and that the command was run from the packaged installation. Generate a fresh token rather than reusing an expired one. After reconfiguration, verify the node’s address, name, cluster name, and certificate permissions.
The first node will not restart after another node was added
Make sure its discovery.seed_hosts includes the master-eligible peers, not only its own address. Check firewalls and DNS or address stability, then review the service log for transport TLS and bootstrap errors.
HTTPS works locally but clients fail remotely
Verify that network.host and the HTTP binding use the intended interface, that the firewall allows the client network, and that clients trust the generated CA certificate. Keep transport and HTTP rules separate: opening REST access does not make peer transport reachable, and exposing transport publicly is unsafe.
Self-managed Ubuntu or a managed deployment?
The right choice depends on who will operate the failure-prone parts of the system. A self-managed Ubuntu cluster gives direct control over network placement, data residency, kernel settings, storage, upgrade timing, and firewall policy, but your team owns patching, certificate handling, capacity planning, backups, restores, and incident response. Elastic Cloud Hosted shifts much of that operational work to the service while still requiring decisions about regions, access, retention, integrations, and recovery objectives.
| Decision axis | Self-managed Ubuntu | Managed Elasticsearch deployment |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system and upgrades | Your team schedules and validates them. | The provider operates the platform according to its service controls. |
| Network and residency | You choose interfaces, firewalls, subnets, and storage locations. | Options depend on the provider’s regions and networking model. |
| Failure-domain design | You place nodes and disks across your own zones or sites. | The service supplies documented availability options. |
| Backups and restores | You configure repositories, schedules, monitoring, and restore tests. | Backup features and responsibilities follow the service plan and contract. |
| Scaling workflow | You provision hosts, install packages, enroll nodes, and rebalance shards. | You use the provider’s scaling workflow and limits. |
| Total cost | Includes infrastructure and engineering time at the expected data volume. | Depends on selected capacity, storage, traffic, region, and service terms; no universal ranking applies. |
Choose self-management when private networking, operating-system control, or residency requirements outweigh the engineering overhead. Choose a managed deployment when reducing cluster administration is more valuable than controlling every host-level detail. In either case, define recovery time and recovery point objectives before selecting node counts or retention.
