The safest way to set up a PS5 for a child is to use a separate child PlayStation account inside a parent-managed family—not the parent’s unrestricted profile. Set the child’s game, communication, privacy, playtime, and spending controls, protect the adult account, and test everything from the child profile before handing over the console.
What you need before starting
- A parent or legal guardian’s adult PlayStation Network account and login details.
- The child’s accurate birth date and country or region.
- Access to the parent’s email for verification.
- The PS5, DualSense controller, HDMI cable, power cable, and an internet connection.
Decide in advance whether the child may play online, use voice or text chat, access user-generated content, make purchases, use a headset or camera, or use PlayStation VR. Sony says PlayStation VR and PlayStation VR2 are not for children under 12.

Use accurate age information. Do not enter an older birth date to bypass restrictions. Age information affects eligibility, age-rated games, purchases, privacy, communication controls, and later account management. Sony’s terms place responsibility for creating a child account on the parent or legal guardian and require a separate child account for each child.

- Place the console where air can circulate freely around it.
- Connect the PS5 to the TV or monitor with HDMI.
- Connect the power cable.
- Connect the DualSense controller with the USB cable for its first pairing.
- Turn on the console and follow the setup prompts for language, region, display, network, time zone, and system software updates.
- Sign in with the parent’s adult account first.
A disc-edition PS5 can use physical game discs. A digital-edition PS5 requires games to be downloaded or streamed. The distinction does not change account-based parental controls, but physical media, unrated content, and third-party services still require parental judgment.

Menu names can vary slightly by PS5 system software, model, country, and account status. Sony also warns that parental-control features differ by device and region and do not cover every type of content.
2. Create the PlayStation family
The family manager is the adult account that creates and administers the family. There can be only one family manager. An adult family member can be appointed as a parent or guardian to help manage controls, while other adult accounts can remain ordinary adult members. A child account is a supervised child member.
You can manage the family on the PS5, through PlayStation Account Management on the web, or with Sony’s free PS Family app. On the console, the main parental-control route is:
Recommended Free Tools
Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management
Use the same parent-managed family for every child, but create a different child account for each one. Sharing a single child profile mixes saves, friends, messages, playtime records, game requests, recommendations, and age settings.
3. Create a separate child account
On the PS5, use this route:
- Press the PS button.
- Select the profile picture.
- Select Switch User.
- Select Add User.
- Choose the option to create an account for a child.
- Enter the child’s accurate information and complete the verification prompts.
- Set the initial restriction and privacy options.
- Have the child sign in to their own profile.
Sony’s PS5 guide gives the account-creation route as PS button > profile picture > Switch User > Add User. Creating a child account automatically links it to the parent’s account and family.
A child account is preferable to an adult account because it supports age-based restrictions, parent-managed privacy and communication settings, playtime limits, game requests, and a default spending limit. It also gives the child separate saves, trophies, friends, and recommendations.

4. Configure games and content
Open:
Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management > select the child
Review these controls:
- Restriction level.
- Age levels for PS5, PS4, and PS3 games and apps.
- Blu-ray and DVD restrictions.
- Allowed Games.
- Game requests.
- Communication permissions for individual games.
- User-generated content.
- Online-content age filtering, where available.
Use the age setting as a starting point, then examine the games the child actually plays. Check the official age rating and whether the game contains violence, frightening material, language, sexual content, gambling-like mechanics, user-generated content, voice or text chat, in-game purchases, or a separate publisher account.
Age ratings are useful but are not a complete safety system. Sony notes that not all content is rated and that ratings or descriptions may come from third parties. A boxed rating may also say little about the behavior of other players, moderation quality, cross-platform chat, or live-service monetization.

Alternatively, use:
Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management > child > Allowed Games
Approve an individual game only after reviewing its content and online features; an exception should be a deliberate decision, not a blanket override.
5. Set communication and privacy controls
Game access and online communication are separate decisions. In the PS Family app, open the child, select the settings icon beside the child’s name, then choose:
Parental Controls > Online Communication
Start with restrictions on voice chat, text chat, communication requests, and user-generated content for a young child. For an older child, you might allow communication with known friends while still restricting unknown-player contact and user-generated content. Teenagers may need more independence, but should understand blocking, reporting, leaving a party, and recognizing unsafe requests.
Useful starting privacy settings include:
- Friend requests: known friends or parent-approved requests.
- Messages: restricted or limited to friends initially.
- Voice chat: disabled until you have tested the game and discussed expectations.
- Activity visibility: limited.
- Real-name search and profile visibility: restricted.
- User-generated content: restricted for younger children.
Teach the child never to share a real name, school, address, phone number, location, password, or identifiable photo. They should not move a conversation to another app because a stranger asks them to. The correct response to harassment is to block and report the player, leave the party or game, and tell an adult.
PlayStation parental controls, privacy settings, game settings, and publisher-account controls can overlap. If communication is blocked unexpectedly—or remains available when you expected it to be blocked—check all four layers.
6. Set playtime limits
The PS5 family controls can set permitted days, daily duration, start and end times, and time zone. The PS Family app provides a Playtime widget for managing the schedule and changing the remaining time for the current day.
Set different rules for school days, weekends, holidays, and special events. Set the correct time zone and leave enough time for the child to save and exit a game. A limit is most useful when it supports a clear family agreement about homework, sleep, meals, and stopping points rather than replacing supervision.
If you change parental controls while the child is playing, have the child close the game, sign out, and sign back in. Sony says this may be necessary before changed controls take effect.
7. Prevent unwanted purchases
A child account’s monthly spending limit is $0 by default. Child accounts do not have their own PlayStation wallet; purchases use the family manager’s wallet within the assigned limit.

To check the limit on PS5, open:
Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management > child > Parental Controls > Monthly Spending Limit
Leaving the limit at $0 is the safest default. If you intentionally allow purchases, set a small limit and explain exactly what it covers. Sony’s terms state that increasing the limit represents the parent’s approval of purchases up to that amount and agreement to pay them.
This limit primarily concerns the PlayStation Store child-account purchase flow. Games and services may use separate in-game or third-party purchasing systems, so review those controls independently. Do not leave the parent’s unrestricted profile signed in for unrestricted access to stored payment methods.

8. Lock the parent account and console
Parental controls are ineffective if the child can simply switch to the adult profile. Use a unique adult-account password and a passkey or other supported sign-in security. Do not share the adult login details.
Protect the parent profile with a console passcode and make sure payment details are not exposed through an unrestricted account. Each adult should use their own adult profile, and each child should use their own child profile. Do not let the child use the parent profile “just this once” if reliable restrictions matter.
If another player must be blocked, Sony documents this route:
PS button > Game Base > select the player > More > Block
9. Check third-party accounts separately
PlayStation controls do not automatically configure every service used by a game. Check the publisher or platform account whenever a title asks the child to create or link one, including services such as Epic Games, Roblox, Microsoft, Activision, EA, and Ubisoft.

- Create it with the child’s accurate age.
- Set its parental controls and privacy options separately.
- Disable cross-platform communication if appropriate.
- Review voice chat, text chat, user-generated content, and purchases.
- Repeat the audit after major updates or account changes.
PlayStation may notify the parent when a child links a third-party service or app, but the PS5 cannot fully govern that service’s chat, spending, moderation, or content system.
10. Test the setup before handing over the PS5
Switch to the child profile and verify the result rather than assuming the settings worked:
- Try to open a game above the selected age level and confirm it is blocked.
- Launch an allowed game.
- Check that voice and text communication behave as intended.
- Confirm the spending limit is $0 or the amount you chose.
- Confirm the playtime schedule and warning behavior.
- Verify that the child cannot open the parent’s profile without authorization.
- Confirm that game requests and other notifications reach the parent.
- Check that the child cannot change protected family settings.
Using the PS Family app
The free PS Family app can manage parental controls, games and apps, online communication, privacy, playtime, spending, requests, notifications, linked services, and authorized apps. It can show the current game and its age rating, along with a seven-day activity summary and most-played games and apps.
For the most accurate current-session information, Sony says the game should be closed before the child signs in. The app is helpful remote management, not continuous surveillance. It does not replace conversations, supervision, game-specific settings, or controls on third-party accounts and devices. Availability and features can vary by country or region.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCommon problems and fixes
Controls are not taking effect
- Confirm the setting was changed for the correct child account.
- Confirm email verification is complete.
- Check that the child is using the child profile, not the parent profile.
- Close the game.
- Sign the child out and back in.
- Check whether a third-party account controls the feature.
- Review region, device, and system-software limitations.
- Update the PS5 and PS Family app.
Communication is blocked or still available
Check the PlayStation Online Communication setting, the individual game’s safety menu, the publisher account, cross-platform settings, party chat, and in-game chat separately. These controls do not always behave as one universal switch.
Activity information looks wrong
Close games before the child signs in if you want the most accurate current-session data. The app’s activity summary covers the previous seven days, not every activity over the life of the account.
The account was created with the wrong age
Do not upgrade an account simply to bypass a temporary restriction. When eligible, a child account can be upgraded, but Sony says an upgraded account cannot be reverted to child status. If the birth date was entered incorrectly, contact PlayStation Support rather than creating a misleading replacement account.
Review the setup regularly
Recheck the settings when the child starts a new game, links a new publisher account, makes new online friends, or receives a major console or game update. Revisit playtime and communication rules as the child matures, and review whether a game’s live-service features, user-generated content, or monetization have changed.
If online multiplayer is needed, most paid PS4 and PS5 games require PlayStation Plus, while many free-to-play games are exceptions. Buy a PlayStation Plus plan only for a specific need; subscriptions renew automatically until canceled. The PS Family app itself is free, and a headset is optional rather than a required part of setup. A headset can improve communication, but it does not make online chat safer without the account, game, and publisher controls above.
