To access a Linux VPS graphically with X2Go, install a compatible desktop environment and the X2Go server packages on the VPS, make sure ordinary SSH login works, then create an X2Go Client profile that points to the same host, user, port and authentication method. X2Go carries the session over SSH, normally TCP port 22, so a separate X2Go data port is not normally needed.

What X2Go does on a VPS
X2Go divides the remote-desktop job between two machines. X2Go Server runs on the Linux VPS and starts the applications and desktop session there. X2Go Client runs on your local Linux, Windows or macOS computer and displays that session. PyHoca-GUI and PyHoca-CLI are alternative clients for the same server architecture.

The connection is an SSH login rather than a separately exposed graphical protocol. The VPS’s SSH daemon handles transport and authentication. In practical terms, a user who is allowed to log in over command-line SSH is generally the user who can start an X2Go desktop session. You should therefore test SSH first and treat the X2Go profile as another way to use that account.
X2Go does not supply a desktop environment. The VPS must already have one installed, and the client must request the matching session. The project specifically warns that newer GNOME 3 and Unity versions can have compatibility problems, so a supported alternative such as MATE or KDE is often a safer choice for a first setup.

Requirements before you install anything
- A reachable VPS: use its public IP address or a public hostname that resolves from the computer where the client will run.
- An SSH-enabled system: the SSH server must be running, and the account you plan to use must be permitted to log in.
- A desktop environment: install one that works with X2Go and know the session name or command that starts it.
- A permitted SSH port: port 22 is the normal default. If you changed SSH to another port, use that same port in the client profile and in the VPS firewall or cloud security group.
- A non-root account: use a normal user for the graphical session and
sudofor administration. Avoid opening a graphical root session. - A local X2Go client: install the package for your local Linux, Windows or macOS computer from the X2Go project or your operating system’s package source.
The reviewed project documentation does not publish a universal minimum for VPS CPU, RAM, storage or bandwidth. Choose resources for the applications and number of simultaneous sessions you will run. A light single-user desktop and a browser-heavy development workload have very different requirements; do not treat any unverified VPS size as an official X2Go minimum.
Plan the SSH and firewall path
X2Go’s documented network path is the VPS SSH service. You normally need one inbound rule for the SSH port, not a second range of X2Go-specific ports.

Restrict the rule to trusted source addresses when your use case allows it. Keep the SSH daemon, operating system, desktop packages and X2Go packages updated through the distribution’s normal update process. If your provider has both a host firewall and a cloud security group, the connection must be allowed by both.
Install a compatible desktop environment
X2Go starts the desktop session you select in the client. Install that desktop before testing the graphical connection, using the package manager and instructions for your VPS distribution. The exact package name and command differ between distributions, so there is no single desktop-install command that is correct for every Linux VPS.
Choosing a session
MATE and KDE are examples of session types shown in the X2Go client documentation. Record the session label your distribution installs, because selecting a different label can cause an immediate disconnect even when the server packages are correct.

Newer GNOME 3 and Unity releases are called out by the X2Go server documentation as having compatibility issues. If one of those sessions fails, test a desktop environment with documented X2Go compatibility rather than repeatedly changing SSH settings. Install only the components you need; a smaller desktop generally means fewer packages and less background activity, but the appropriate choice depends on your applications.

After installing the desktop, reboot if your distribution requires it, or start a new SSH session so newly installed services and environment settings are available. You can verify the account still works before involving X2Go:
ssh user@host -p PORTReplace user, host and PORT with the actual account, address and SSH port. A successful command-line login proves reachability and credentials, but it does not by itself prove that the selected desktop session can start.
Install X2Go Server on Ubuntu
On Ubuntu, the official instructions add the X2Go stable repository, refresh package metadata and install the server packages. Run these commands from an SSH session using an account with sudo access:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:x2go/stable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install x2goserver x2goserver-xsessionThe x2goserver package supplies the server-side core. x2goserver-xsession supplies the session integration required for the X2Go Client to start a remote desktop on Debian-family systems that have a desktop environment. Install both rather than assuming the core package alone is sufficient.

Allow the repository command to complete, check that package installation finishes without errors, and keep the package manager’s normal update process enabled. Do not expose a new inbound port just because X2Go was installed; the client will use the SSH port you already tested.
Install X2Go Server on Debian
For Debian, enable the X2Go Debian repository according to the project’s Debian instructions, refresh the package index, and install the same two packages:
sudo apt-get install x2goserver x2goserver-xsessionIf your package manager reports that the packages cannot be found, the repository step has not been completed or its metadata is stale. Correct the repository configuration, run the distribution’s update command, and retry. On Debian, Raspbian and Ubuntu systems with a desktop environment, the project documentation specifically identifies x2goserver-xsession as necessary for a client to initiate a session.
Install the client and create a session profile
Install X2Go Client on the computer you will use to connect. Linux users can use a distribution package where available; Windows and macOS users should use the X2Go project’s client package. Then open X2Go Client and create a new session profile.

- Enter the host. Use the VPS’s public IP address or a hostname that resolves from the local computer. If you use a name, verify DNS resolution before troubleshooting X2Go.
- Enter the SSH user. Use the non-root account that successfully logged in with the
sshcommand. - Set the SSH port. Enter
22unless the VPS uses another SSH port. The profile can use an alternative port, but it must match the daemon and firewall rules. - Choose authentication. Select the password, private-key or SSH-agent method that works for the same account. If you use a key, select the correct private-key file and ensure its permissions and passphrase handling allow the local client to use it.
- Select the desktop session. Choose the installed session, such as MATE or KDE, or specify the custom desktop command required by your installation.
- Save and start the profile. On the first connection, verify the server host key when prompted, then authenticate.
The host, username and port in the profile should be identical to the values in your working SSH command. A mismatch in any one of them can look like an X2Go failure even though the server is operating normally.

What should happen on the first connection
After host-key verification and authentication, X2Go should create or resume a desktop session on the VPS and display it in a local window. Applications run on the VPS; the local computer is displaying the remote session. Closing the client does not necessarily mean the remote applications have been cleanly closed, so use the desktop’s normal logout function when you are finished and reconnect to an existing session when the client offers that choice.
The exact controls for display size, local integration and session behavior vary by client version and operating system. Keep the initial test simple: use the default display settings, start one compatible desktop session and confirm that a basic application opens. Change performance or integration options only after the basic path works.
Security practices for an Internet-facing VPS
Use named, non-root accounts
Create a user for daily work, grant only the administrative privileges required through sudo, and select that user in X2Go. Reserve root for administration. This limits the impact of a compromised graphical session and makes account-level auditing possible.
Prefer keys and limit exposure
Where practical, use SSH keys or an SSH agent instead of a password and restrict SSH login to named users. Allow the selected SSH port only from trusted networks in the VPS firewall and provider security group when your work pattern permits it. A changing client address may require a broader rule, but it should be an intentional trade-off rather than an accidental open-to-the-world setting.
Patch every layer
Update the operating system, SSH daemon, desktop environment and X2Go packages through the normal repositories. Re-test command-line SSH after changes to the daemon or firewall, then reconnect with the saved X2Go profile. Do not install an additional listener for X2Go unless another component explicitly requires one; the documented design uses SSH as the transport.

Troubleshoot a failed connection
Work from the network outward. Changing desktop commands before proving SSH works makes diagnosis harder.

Run the checks in order
- From the same local computer, run
ssh user@host -p PORT. If it fails, fix DNS, routing, firewall or credentials first. - Confirm that the VPS firewall and cloud security group allow the exact port used by SSH.
- Compare the X2Go profile’s host, username, port and authentication method with the working SSH command.
- Confirm that the selected desktop environment is installed and that its session command is correct.
- On Debian, Raspbian or Ubuntu, verify that both
x2goserverandx2goserver-xsessionare installed. - If the selected session is newer GNOME 3 or Unity, test a compatible alternative.
- Reproduce the failure once more and review X2Go client and server logs. Package locations differ by distribution, so use your distribution’s package documentation to locate them.
A profile that authenticates successfully but disconnects during session startup is usually a desktop or session-package problem, not a missing inbound X2Go port. Keep that distinction in mind when reading logs.
Session and capacity decisions
X2Go can be useful when you want the applications and files to remain on a remote Linux machine while you work from another computer. The VPS does the application work, so CPU, memory, storage performance and network quality should be selected for the workload rather than for a generic X2Go specification. The available documentation establishes no universal hardware threshold or benchmark ranking.
- For one light session, start with the smallest VPS that comfortably runs the chosen desktop and applications, then monitor resource use.
- For browsers, IDEs, media tools or several simultaneous users, plan for higher memory and CPU demand and test the real workload.
- For unstable networks, favor a setup that keeps long-running work on the VPS and reconnect to the existing session instead of restarting applications.
- For multiple users, give each person a separate SSH account and session, and size the VPS for concurrent desktops rather than for one idle login.
These are operational planning principles, not published X2Go minimums. Measure the applications you actually intend to run before committing to a VPS size.
A repeatable setup checklist
- VPS has a public IP or resolvable hostname.
- SSH daemon is enabled and the chosen non-root user can log in.
- The same SSH port is allowed by the VPS firewall and provider security group.
- A desktop environment is installed and its X2Go-compatible session name is known.
- Ubuntu has the X2Go stable repository enabled, or Debian has the X2Go Debian repository enabled.
x2goserverandx2goserver-xsessionare installed.- Local X2Go Client is installed.
- Profile contains the tested host, username, port and authentication method.
- Profile selects the installed desktop session rather than an unsupported or misspelled command.
- No unnecessary X2Go-specific inbound port has been opened.
Bottom line
An X2Go remote desktop on a Linux VPS is an SSH-based arrangement: install a compatible desktop, install both X2Go server packages, verify ordinary SSH access, and point the local client at the same account and port. Most failures are resolved by correcting one of those four layers—reachability, authentication, session selection or package installation—rather than by opening additional network ports.
