To host a Team Fortress 2 Mann vs. Machine (MvM) server, install and update the TF2 dedicated-server files, launch the server on an MvM map, and configure its player-start requirement. For a solo test, set tf_mvm_min_players_to_start 1; for a group server, choose a requirement that suits the group. Internet play also requires the game traffic to reach the host through its firewall and router or cloud firewall. Unofficial servers let players run MvM missions without paying for Mann Up tickets, but they do not award Tour of Duty progress or ticket rewards.

What an MvM server runs
In Valve’s description, a mission is a set of robot attack waves on one map. A Tour of Duty is a collection of missions that can span multiple maps. Your server needs to start on an MvM map, such as mvm_decoy, and its map rotation should contain MvM maps if the instance is intended only for this mode.

Those choices affect configuration and file delivery, but they do not change the basic need for an updated TF2 dedicated server and an MvM map.
Unofficial play versus Mann Up
Valve’s Mann Up FAQ says players can play as much as they like on an unofficial server. Mann Up is the official-server mode associated with Tour of Duty tickets and progress. Hosting a private or community server does not grant those ticket rewards or track Tour of Duty progress. Do not treat an unofficial server as a way to bypass the official mode’s reward system.

Install and update the dedicated server
- Choose a host. You can use Steam’s server tooling or a hosting panel. The cited hosting reference identifies Team Fortress 2’s server App ID as
232250in a panel context. If using a panel, follow its TF2 server installation flow rather than assuming that the App ID is a command-line instruction. - Install the server files. Allow the tool or panel to complete the installation before configuring the game. The server configuration directory used in the reference is
tf/cfg/. - Run an update before first launch. Start with current server files instead of troubleshooting against an outdated installation. Keep updates in mind after setup as well: Valve’s May 1, 2025 TF2 update included MvM-related changes and fixes.
- Confirm the instance is a dedicated server. Configure and launch the server instance through the selected server tool or panel. This guide does not prescribe a particular operating system’s installation commands because the process depends on the host and tooling.
Launch on an MvM map
Set the startup map to an MvM map. A hosting reference gives this example startup configuration:
+maxplayers 32 +map mvm_decoyThis is an example, not a universal capacity recommendation: it shows a maximum of 32 players and starts on mvm_decoy. Choose capacity and map according to your server plan and intended group. The cited reference recommends an MvM-only mapcycle for an instance dedicated to MvM; make sure the rotation does not send players to unrelated modes.

For a Workshop map, use the workshop/<mapid> form wherever the map is selected: the +map startup setting, a changelevel or nextlevel setting, or the mapcycle. Steam can then deliver the current Workshop version to the server and connected clients, reducing the need to mirror Workshop map files manually and helping avoid map-version mismatches. Use the map’s actual Workshop ID in place of <mapid>; it is not a literal map name or value to leave unchanged.
Configure the server for MvM
Create or edit tf/cfg/server.cfg for the server’s standard settings, such as hostname, password, logging, and administration. Set only the options appropriate to how you plan to operate the server; the exact values depend on whether the instance is private, shared with friends, or public.

Let one player start a mission for testing
Add this line to server.cfg when you need to test a mission alone:
tf_mvm_min_players_to_start 1AlliedModders documents this convar as the setting that requires only one player to ready up and start a mission. For a group server, use a higher requirement suited to the expected party rather than leaving a solo-testing setting in place by default. The appropriate group value is a server-owner choice; no universal number is established here.

The MvM start requirement controls readiness for a mission. It is distinct from the startup map, maximum player capacity, access password, and administrative controls. Keep each setting in its proper role: the launch configuration selects the initial map and capacity, while server.cfg holds server settings such as access and logging. This makes later changes easier to diagnose.
Choose official or custom maps and missions
Official maps and missions are the simplest starting point for a new server. If adding custom content, treat custom maps and custom .pop missions as separate things to validate: the map provides the stage, while a mission file describes the robot waves. Test custom content on a staging instance before putting it on a server that other players rely on.

Custom Workshop maps
Use the Workshop path convention workshop/<mapid> for a Workshop map, including when you place it in the mapcycle. This tells Steam which Workshop item the server should retrieve. If the map does not load or players encounter a map mismatch, verify that the selected ID is correct and that the server is using the Workshop path rather than an unrelated local filename.
Custom .pop missions
Custom .pop missions should be validated on a staging server before you make them part of a live rotation. The available reference for selecting MvM maps and difficulty is an archived listen-server script, not current Valve documentation. It may illustrate a configuration-driven approach, but it should not be treated as authoritative instructions for a current dedicated server. Confirm that the mission and map work together on the server version you actually run.

Make the server reachable
A server can run correctly on its host and still be unreachable to friends or the public. For internet play, allow the game traffic through every relevant firewall: the host operating system, the home router or cloud firewall, and any hosting control panel that filters traffic.
Allow gameplay and administration traffic separately
The configuration guide’s virtualization example forwards UDP for gameplay and identifies TCP as needed only for RCON administration. Permit only the traffic you intend to use, and ensure the selected game port is reachable from outside the host’s local network. The exact port number is not specified by the configuration evidence cited for this article, so check the server’s own configuration or hosting panel instead of assuming a number.

If friends cannot connect, check the path in layers: verify the server is running, confirm the game port and protocol in its configuration, check the host firewall, then inspect router port forwarding or cloud firewall rules. A rule on the host alone cannot compensate for a router or cloud firewall that still blocks the traffic.
Use fast downloads for custom files
Players may need to download custom maps, sounds, or models. The configuration guide describes hosting those files on a web server and setting sv_downloadurl to the mirror’s root. Copy the same files to the mirror so the paths requested by the game resolve there. Do not put a trailing slash at the end of the mirror root: the client appends the requested file path.
Fast downloads are for delivering custom files to clients; they do not replace the server’s own need to have the map or other content installed and selected correctly. If a client cannot retrieve a file, compare the server-side file path with the matching path on the web mirror and check the URL root for an accidental trailing slash.
Optional Steam Datagram Relay address hiding
The configuration guide documents -enablefakeip as an alternative that routes server and client connections through Steam’s relay, hiding each side’s IP address from the other. When allocation succeeds, the server reports FakeIP allocation succeeded. The assigned address changes every time the server restarts, so do not assume that an address obtained from one session will remain the same after a restart.

Choose self-hosting or managed hosting
The right choice depends less on a universal performance claim than on who will maintain the server and how much control you need over its files and network. The available configuration guidance covers these operational differences, but does not establish provider-specific prices, guarantees, or player-slot limits.

Before choosing managed hosting, verify the specific provider’s current features instead of assuming that every panel supports custom files, fast downloads, or the same RCON controls. For self-hosting, account for the time needed to update the host, protect administrative access, and keep custom files available.
Update the server and troubleshoot MvM behavior
Valve’s May 1, 2025 update added a convar to control the maximum number of MvM robots and fixed MvM issues involving the HUD, voice, scoring, and related behavior. If an MvM problem appears version-related, update the server before changing gameplay configuration. Do not assume that a symptom is caused by a server setting when the installed game files may predate a relevant fix.
Common setup symptoms and checks
- The server starts on the wrong map: inspect the startup map and mapcycle, and ensure the selected entries are MvM maps. For Workshop items, check that the entry uses
workshop/<mapid>. - A solo test cannot start the mission: confirm that
tf_mvm_min_players_to_start 1is present in the server configuration and that the server has loaded the intended configuration. - Friends cannot connect: confirm that the instance is running, then check gameplay UDP access through the host firewall and router or cloud firewall. Check the configured game port rather than guessing one.
- RCON does not connect: verify the RCON configuration and the relevant TCP firewall path. The cited network guidance distinguishes TCP for RCON from UDP gameplay traffic.
- Clients lack a custom map, sound, or model: verify the web mirror contains the same file path as the server and that
sv_downloadurlpoints to the mirror root without a trailing slash. - Custom content behaves inconsistently: reproduce the issue on a staging instance with the server updated, then validate the map and
.popmission together before changing the public rotation.
Linux host prerequisites
On 64-bit Linux, the configuration guide notes that 32-bit compatibility libraries may be missing and lists distribution-specific packages. It also calls out a TF2 replay-library dependency. Treat these as host prerequisites to check if the server fails to start or load a required library; they are not MvM gameplay settings. Package names depend on the Linux distribution, so use the instructions for the specific distribution rather than applying a package command from a different one.
