To run Pixelmon on Minecraft 1.7.10, use Pixelmon 3.5.1, a 64-bit Java 8 runtime, and a Forge 1.7.10 server. Allocate at least 3 GB of memory. Install Forge, launch it once, accept the Minecraft EULA, then stop the server and place the unchanged Pixelmon server jar in its mods folder. Every player must use the same Pixelmon version as the server.

What you need before you start

This is a guide for a Minecraft: Java Edition server. Minecraft’s official server guidance states that this server setup is only compatible with Java Edition; it is not a Bedrock server. The Pixelmon Mod Wiki’s compatibility table maps Minecraft 1.7.10 to Pixelmon 3.5.1, so use that pairing for both the server and every player’s client.

The Pixelmon guide specifies 64-bit Java 8 for this setup and says earlier or later Java versions will not work. It recommends at least 3 GB of allocated memory, with the amount needed depending on player count and installed mods or plugins. The 3 GB figure is the guide’s minimum recommendation, not a guarantee that every server will perform well with any number of players.

  • A computer or server that can run Minecraft Java Edition and keep the server process running.
  • A 64-bit Java 8 installation.
  • The recommended Forge server build for Minecraft 1.7.10.
  • Pixelmon 3.5.1’s server jar.
  • At least 3 GB of memory available to allocate to the server.
  • For each player, a Minecraft Java Edition installation with Forge and Pixelmon 3.5.1 configured to match the server.

Keep the server files together in a dedicated folder. That makes the generated world, configuration, logs, and mods directory easier to locate and reduces the risk of starting the wrong server from another directory.

Choose local hosting or a server reachable over the internet

A server running on your own computer is simplest to set up for people on the same local network. It does not automatically become reachable to people outside that network. Remote access can require router port forwarding and firewall configuration; Minecraft’s official documentation gives Java’s default server port as 25565. A larger public server may be better suited to paid hosting, which the Pixelmon guide recommends considering for performance, stability, and safety.

Consideration Host on your own computer Managed server hosting
Setup effort You install Forge and Pixelmon, launch the server, and manage its files and configuration yourself. Provider setup and management vary; the Pixelmon guide recommends considering paid hosting for larger public servers.
Remote access Generally local-network access by default. Players outside the network may require port forwarding and firewall changes. Availability and configuration depend on the hosting service; check its terms and setup instructions.
Memory and CPU headroom Limited by the computer’s available resources and what you can safely allocate. Depends on the selected service and plan; the guide gives no plan specifications.
Uptime and support You are responsible for keeping the computer and server running and troubleshooting them. Support and uptime depend on the provider; no service-level figure is established here.
Cost No server-hosting charge is required to run the software locally, though the computer and network still need to be available. Paid hosting has a cost that varies by provider and plan; no price is specified here.

Choose local hosting when the group is small, can connect on the same network, and someone can keep the host computer running. Consider managed hosting when you need a more consistently available public server, more resource headroom, or less responsibility for network and machine administration. Hosting does not remove the need to match the Minecraft, Forge, and Pixelmon versions.

Install Forge 1.7.10 and generate the server files

  1. Download the recommended Forge build for Minecraft 1.7.10. Run the Forge installer and choose Install server. When asked for a location, select the dedicated server folder you prepared. On some Windows setups, the Pixelmon guide notes that Forge 2847’s Installer-win file may be needed; it is available from Forge’s Show all Versions list. This note applies to the installer choice on affected Windows setups, not as a replacement for checking that the build is for Minecraft 1.7.10.
  2. Launch the Forge server once. Start the Forge server jar from its folder. On Windows, the guide uses a .bat file; on macOS or Linux, run the equivalent Java command from a terminal with the server folder as the working directory. Use the exact Forge jar filename generated by the installer. The example below allocates 3 GB and launches without the graphical interface:
    java -Xms3G -Xmx3G -jar <exact-Forge-jar-filename>.jar nogui

Replace the text in angle brackets with the actual Forge jar filename in your server folder. Do not type the brackets. -Xms3G sets the starting heap allocation and -Xmx3G sets the maximum heap allocation in this example; allocate only memory the host can support. A Windows batch file can contain the same command on a line, saved with a .bat extension in the server folder.

  3. Accept the Minecraft EULA if you agree to it. The first launch creates eula.txt and then stops. Read the EULA. If you agree, edit eula.txt, change eula=false to eula=true, save the file, and launch the server again. The next launch generates a fresh world and the remaining server files.
  4. Wait for startup to finish. Keep the server process open while it initializes. Use the server console for commands and status messages; do not close the process as a substitute for a clean shutdown.

Install Pixelmon on the server

  1. In the server console, enter stop and wait for the server to shut down before changing its mods.
  2. Open the server’s mods folder. If it is not present, check that you launched the Forge server successfully from the dedicated folder; the folder is part of the server setup.
  3. Download the Pixelmon 3.5.1 server jar and put that file in mods. Do not extract it or rename it. The Pixelmon guide distinguishes the smaller server variant from the universal variant and intends the server variant for server use.
  4. Start the Forge server again. Allow it to complete startup with Pixelmon loaded before asking players to connect.
Pixelmon file Intended use Size and handling
Server variant Server The guide describes it as smaller; place the jar unchanged in the server’s mods folder.
Universal variant Not the server-specific variant described for this installation The guide does not state its file size; do not substitute it for the server variant in these steps.

Use the file specifically identified as Pixelmon 3.5.1’s server jar, rather than relying on a filename guess. If the server does not start after adding the file, stop it cleanly and verify that the file is the server jar for the same Pixelmon version and that it has not been extracted or altered.

Configure Pixelmon after the first successful launch

Once the server has started with Pixelmon, its configuration is in config/pixelmon.hocon. Open it with a proper text editor, make only the settings changes you intend, and preserve the file’s formatting. Different settings have different activation behavior: some affect only newly generated chunks, some can be applied with /pokereload, and others require a server restart.

  • Before changing settings, decide whether a setting should affect existing areas or only terrain generated later. Pixelmon’s guide notes that some configuration changes apply only to fresh chunks.
  • Use /pokereload for changes the guide identifies as reloadable.
  • Restart the server when the change requires it; a reload command does not apply every setting.

Do not assume that a configuration edit changed already-generated chunks or took effect immediately. Check the behavior of the specific setting in the Pixelmon guide before deciding whether to explore new terrain, reload, or restart.

Make sure players can join

Match the client and server versions

Every player’s client must use the same Pixelmon version as the server: for this Minecraft 1.7.10 setup, that is Pixelmon 3.5.1. The Pixelmon Mod Wiki states, “Players connecting to a server must use the same version of Pixelmon that the server is using.” A mismatch prevents joining and produces a Mod Rejection error.

Before troubleshooting networking, check that each player has the same Minecraft version, the compatible Forge setup, and Pixelmon 3.5.1. Updating only the server or only one player’s mod can create a mismatch. If a player sees Mod Rejection, compare the version installed on that client’s side with the Pixelmon version running on the server.

Connect on the same local network

For a locally hosted server, have players connect using the host computer’s address on the local network and the server port if requested by their client. This arrangement generally serves devices on the same network. The exact address depends on the host’s network configuration and is not the same for every household or computer.

Allow access from outside the network

To let players connect from outside your local network, the host may need a router rule forwarding Minecraft Java’s default port, 25565, to the server computer, along with firewall permission for the server. Minecraft’s official guidance notes that network setup may include port forwarding and firewall configuration. Router interfaces and firewall steps differ, so use the instructions for your own network equipment and operating system rather than applying a guessed menu path.

  • Confirm that the server is running and listening before testing remote access.
  • Check that the firewall allows the Java server process or the relevant server port.
  • Forward the required port to the correct computer on the local network if your network requires it.
  • Give remote players the address they need to reach the host, not the host’s local-network-only address.

Do not expose a server to the public until you understand the access rules on your network and have considered who should be able to join. For a larger public server, the Pixelmon guide suggests considering paid hosting for performance, stability, and safety.

Add sidemods or SpongeForge only when needed

Pixelmon sidemods are optional extensions, not prerequisites for a basic server. Choose sidemods from the compatibility list for the exact Pixelmon version and check each sidemod’s own requirements. For this setup, confirm compatibility with Pixelmon 3.5.1 rather than assuming a sidemod for another Pixelmon release will work.

  1. Verify that the sidemod supports the exact Pixelmon version and check whether it requires another component.
  2. Stop the server with stop before changing its mod files.
  3. Place the sidemod jar in the server’s mods folder.
  4. Restart the server and check that it completes startup.

Some sidemods require SpongeForge and a permissions plugin such as LuckPerms. SpongeForge is optional: when it is required by an extension you chose, install the recommended SpongeForge jar by placing it in mods and restarting. Do not add SpongeForge or a permissions plugin simply because you are installing Pixelmon; use them only when your selected extensions need them.

Troubleshoot common setup problems

The server stops on its first launch

This is expected if it has generated eula.txt. Read the EULA, set eula=true only if you agree, save the file, and launch the server again.

The server will not launch or reports a Java problem

Check that the server is using 64-bit Java 8, as required by the Pixelmon 1.7.10 guide. Confirm that the Java command runs from the server folder and names the exact Forge jar file there. A command that points to a jar with a different filename will not launch the intended server.

The server runs out of memory or performs poorly

The guide recommends at least 3 GB allocated memory and says the amount depends on player count and installed mods or plugins. Check that the machine has enough memory available before increasing the heap settings. The sample command allocates 3 GB; allocating more than the host can support can prevent the server or other programs from running reliably. More memory alone does not guarantee good performance.

A player receives “Mod Rejection”

Compare the player’s Pixelmon version with the server’s. Both must use Pixelmon 3.5.1 for the 1.7.10 pairing. Also verify that the player is using the compatible Minecraft and Forge setup, rather than a different Minecraft version or mod configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Players on the local network can join but remote players cannot

The server may be reachable only within the local network. For outside connections, check firewall permissions and whether the router needs a port-forwarding rule for Java’s default port 25565. The rule must direct traffic to the computer running the server. A local address given to someone outside the network will not provide remote access.

The server fails after adding a mod or changing configuration

Stop the server and review the most recent change. Confirm that each sidemod supports Pixelmon 3.5.1 and that its dependencies are installed if required. For configuration edits, remember that some changes need fresh chunks, some can use /pokereload, and some require a restart. If startup fails immediately after adding an extension, remove or correct that extension before testing the server again.

Final setup checklist

  • Minecraft Java Edition server set up for version 1.7.10.
  • 64-bit Java 8 in use.
  • Forge server installed in a dedicated folder and launched successfully.
  • Minecraft EULA read and accepted in eula.txt.
  • Pixelmon 3.5.1 server jar placed unchanged in the server’s mods folder.
  • Server restarted and fully initialized with Pixelmon.
  • Every player’s client uses the matching Minecraft, Forge, and Pixelmon versions.
  • Firewall and port-forwarding setup handled if players outside the local network need access.

The version and memory figures above are those stated by the Pixelmon Mod Wiki (2023). Minecraft’s official server guidance supplies the Java Edition limitation and networking context, including default Java port 25565.
