You can host a current V Rising dedicated server on Linux, but not with a native Linux binary. Stunlock’s current PC server distribution for the 1.1.x branch is Windows-only, so a Linux host must run VRisingServer.exe through Wine, provide a headless display with Xvfb, and download the files with SteamCMD (AppID 1829350).

The reliable setup is to run everything as an unprivileged steam user, keep saves and settings in a separate persistent-data directory, expose the configured UDP game and query ports, and stop the server before updates. The procedure below covers installation, configuration, networking, updates, backups, and the failure cases that most often prevent players from connecting.

Stunlock’s current instructions for the PC dedicated server are for version 1.1.x. The distributed executable is still Windows-only; Stunlock states that “at the moment there is only a Windows version of the server available.” Linux hosting is therefore a compatibility setup rather than a native port.

The old Linux wiki command used AppID 582400 for its historical guide. Do not substitute that value for a current 1.1.x installation unless you are deliberately following an older, matching branch. The current installation target is 1829350.

Decide whether self-hosting is appropriate
A Linux server gives you direct control over files, launch arguments, persistent saves, backups, firewall rules, and any later customization. In return, you administer the operating system, Wine, network reachability, updates, restarts, and recovery. A rented managed server can remove much of that administration, but you must evaluate its region, uptime, support, pricing, file access, update policy, and compatibility independently.

If you do not want to maintain Linux packages, Wine, firewall rules, backups, and restart scheduling, renting a server is an official alternative. If you do self-host, use a separate machine or virtual server account rather than running the game process as root.

Prerequisites before installing
- A supported Linux distribution with administrative access for package installation. The package names below are an Ubuntu-era example; your distribution may use different names or Wine packaging.
- A 64-bit Wine environment and the 32-bit support required by the guide you follow.
libstdc++6,xvfb, and SteamCMD.- A non-root account dedicated to the server. The examples use
steamand install into/home/steam/Vrising. - A stable public address or a router/NAT arrangement that can forward UDP traffic to the host.
- Enough storage for the server installation, logs, and the persistent save-data directory. Keep free space available for update downloads and backups.
Do not assume that a package name or Wine command works unchanged on every distribution. Confirm that wine64, xvfb-run, and steamcmd are on the steam user’s PATH before proceeding.
Install Wine, Xvfb, and SteamCMD
Install 32-bit support, Wine, libstdc++6, Xvfb, and SteamCMD using your distribution’s package manager. On Ubuntu-family systems, package names commonly resemble:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install wine64 wine32 libstdc++6 xvfb steamcmdTreat that command as an example, not a universal recipe. Some distributions split 32-bit libraries into separately named packages, package SteamCMD differently, or provide multiple Wine builds. After installation, check the tools as the same account that will run the server:
wine64 --version
xvfb-run --help
steamcmd +quitIf SteamCMD is installed only for interactive administrators, make it available to the steam account or use the distribution’s documented path. Avoid mixing files created by root with files later managed by steam; ownership problems are a common cause of failed updates and unwritable logs.

Create a dedicated service account and download the server
Create a home directory and shell for the unprivileged account, then switch into it. The following is the illustrative installation sequence:
- Create the account as an administrator:
sudo useradd -m -s /bin/bash steam - Start a shell as that account:
sudo -u steam -s - Create the installation directory:
mkdir -p /home/steam/Vrising - Download the current dedicated-server branch anonymously with SteamCMD:
steamcmd +force_install_dir /home/steam/Vrising +login anonymous +app_update 1829350 +quit
Run the download command again whenever you need to verify or update the installation, but stop the running server first. SteamCMD may report that files are already current; that verification is useful after an interrupted download as well as for normal updates.
After the download, confirm that VRisingServer.exe exists under /home/steam/Vrising. The executable is Windows software even though SteamCMD is running on Linux. Do not replace 1829350 with the game/client AppID: 1604030 identifies the runtime through steam_appid.txt, while 1829350 is the dedicated-server download target.
Launch the server headlessly with Wine
Use a virtual X display because a server process launched without a desktop display can fail before it opens its listening sockets. Start it from the installation directory, set a 64-bit Wine prefix, and place persistent data outside the shipped installation files:

-logFile server.logHere, ./save-data is relative to /home/steam/Vrising, so the persistent directory will be /home/steam/Vrising/save-data. The log is written as server.log in the installation directory. Use an absolute path instead if you want saves and logs on a separate volume.
Keep the terminal attached during the first launch. Watch for Wine errors, permission failures, and the point at which the server reports that it is ready. Stop it cleanly before closing the session or updating files. For unattended operation, place the same command in your distribution’s service or process supervisor, configured to run as steam with /home/steam/Vrising as its working directory. A supervisor should restart only after a deliberate clean exit policy; an endless crash loop can obscure the original error.

Keep settings and saves in the persistent data path
The two principal configuration files are:
ServerHostSettings.jsoncontrols the server name, password, ports, listing behavior, and user limit.ServerGameSettings.jsoncontrols gameplay rules.
With the launch command above, local overrides belong below:
/home/steam/Vrising/save-data/Settings/Saves belong below:
/home/steam/Vrising/save-data/Saves/Stunlock recommends copying the supplied start script and setting a custom -persistentDataPath. Edit the files in that persistent path, not the shipped defaults under:
VRisingServer_Data/StreamingAssets/Settings/Updates can replace files in StreamingAssets/Settings, which can erase edits made there. Make one configuration change at a time, preserve valid JSON syntax, and restart the server after changes. A malformed file or an unexpected key can prevent settings from loading; the server log is the first place to look.
Host controls available on the command line
Stunlock documents these useful host arguments:
-serverName-gamePort-queryPort-maxUsers-password-listOnSteam-listOnEOS
Use command-line values consistently with the values in ServerHostSettings.json. If both locations define the same setting, confirm the precedence described by the current Stunlock instructions and avoid maintaining contradictory values in two places. Keep the launch script as the documented source of truth so a restart does not silently revert a port or listing option.
Choose ports and make the server reachable
V Rising uses two UDP services:

Current Stunlock documentation gives example values of 27015 for the game port and 27016 for the query port. Older Linux guides commonly use 9876 and 9877. Neither pair is magic: the values that matter are the ones your launch arguments and host settings actually configure.

- Pick unused UDP ports and record them.
- Set the game and query values in the host settings or launch arguments.
- Allow both UDP ports through the Linux host firewall. For a UFW-based host, an example is:
sudo ufw allow 27015/udp sudo ufw allow 27016/udpReplace those numbers if you selected different ports.
- If the host is behind a router, forward each UDP port to the server’s private address. Give the host a stable DHCP reservation or static address so the rule does not point to a different machine later.
- If the server is in a cloud provider, add matching inbound UDP rules to the provider’s security group or network firewall as well as the operating-system firewall.
- Give players the public address and configured game port for a direct connection.
Opening the query port does not replace opening the game port. Conversely, a server can accept direct connections through the game port while listing is disabled or the query port is blocked.

Enable listing and test discovery
Set ListOnSteam and/or ListOnEOS as appropriate for the communities you want to reach, then restart the server. Listing depends on the query port being reachable from the internet; a local firewall rule alone is not enough if the router or cloud security group still blocks the packet.
Test in this order:
- From a player client, try a direct connection to the public address and configured game port.
- If direct connection works but the server is absent from the browser, verify the query-port forwarding, listing flags, public address, and any upstream firewall.
- Inspect
server.logand change one setting at a time. Restart after each configuration change. - From outside the host’s local network, repeat the test. Testing only from inside the same NAT can produce misleading results because some routers do not support loopback connections.
Do not change ports, passwords, listing flags, and Wine options simultaneously. Isolating one variable preserves the evidence in the log and makes a failed discovery test diagnosable.
Set a password, name, and player limit safely
Use ServerHostSettings.json or the documented host arguments for the server name, password, and maximum users. The official settings document describes a technically supported maximum of 128 concurrent users; that is a configuration ceiling, not a promise that every Linux host can deliver acceptable performance at that population. Choose a limit that matches your machine, network, and community, then increase it only after observing stability.
Keep the password out of publicly readable shell history and service files where possible. Restrict ownership of the persistent directory to the steam account, and never grant players operating-system access merely because they play on the server.
Update procedure, restarts, and backups
Stop the server before running SteamCMD. Updating files while VRisingServer.exe is still running can leave a mixed installation and make version-related failures harder to identify.
- Announce maintenance and stop the server cleanly.
- Back up the persistent saves directory, especially before a major game update or configuration change:
/home/steam/Vrising/save-data/Saves/ - Run the SteamCMD verification/update command as
steam:steamcmd +force_install_dir /home/steam/Vrising +login anonymous +app_update 1829350 +quit - Review the command output for download or disk errors.
- Start the server with the same working directory, Wine environment, persistent-data path, and ports.
- Check the log and perform a direct connection before telling players the server is available.
Stunlock recommends periodic restarts, commonly daily during low-population hours. Some hosting systems apply updates only when a process restarts, so a server that is never restarted can remain on old files even after an update is available. Keep multiple dated backups rather than overwriting one copy; copy the entire Saves directory before changes that could alter world data.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The process exits immediately
- Confirm that you are in
/home/steam/Vrisingwhen using the relative persistent path. - Verify that
wine64andxvfb-runwork for thesteamuser. - Check that the account owns the installation,
save-data, and log locations. - Run the command in the foreground and read the first Wine or server error rather than repeatedly restarting it.
Wine reports a display or graphics error
Ensure Xvfb is installed and that the command includes xvfb-run --auto-servernum with the virtual-screen arguments. A headless host normally has no DISPLAY supplied by a desktop session; Xvfb provides one for the Windows process.

- Confirm the game port in the launch configuration and use that exact UDP port in the router and firewall rules.
- Check the host’s local firewall, router/NAT forwarding, public address, and cloud security-group rule.
- Try a direct connection before troubleshooting server-list visibility.
- Make sure the server is not bound to a private address that players cannot reach.
Direct connection works, but the browser does not show the server
Check the query port separately from the game port, verify ListOnSteam and/or ListOnEOS, and restart after changing them. The query port carries Steam-list traffic; forwarding only the game port is insufficient for browser discovery.
Settings revert after an update
Move local edits out of VRisingServer_Data/StreamingAssets/Settings/ and into the Settings directory under your custom persistent-data path. Confirm that the launch command still includes the same -persistentDataPath after every restart.
SteamCMD reports a version or file mismatch
Stop the server and rerun the current app_update 1829350 command. Verify that all operators are using the same branch. Do not use the historical 582400 value for a current 1.1.x deployment. If the update still fails, inspect disk space, ownership, network access, and SteamCMD output before deleting files.
A configuration edit prevents startup
Restore the last known-good copy of the affected JSON file from your backup, validate the JSON formatting, and restart. Make subsequent changes one at a time so the log identifies which edit introduced the failure.

- Schedule regular low-population restarts and update while the server is offline.
- Keep the server log from each maintenance window so recurring failures can be compared.
When managed hosting is the better choice
Self-hosting is most suitable when you are comfortable maintaining Linux and need complete control over files and networking. Managed hosting is preferable when the priority is an always-on game endpoint rather than administering Wine, package updates, port forwarding, backups, and restart schedules. Before renting, confirm that the provider supports the current 1.1.x server, offers a region close to your players, permits the settings and save access you need, documents its backup retention, and explains how quickly it applies game updates.
