To run a Valhelsia 3 server, download the matching dedicated Server Pack, use 64-bit Java 8, launch the supplied script, accept the Minecraft EULA, configure the server, and have every player install the identical Valhelsia 3 release. The steps below cover self-hosting, internet access, performance, player setup, and safe updates.

What a Valhelsia 3 server requires
Valhelsia 3 is a Forge modpack for Minecraft 1.16.5. A server is not compatible merely because it uses “Valhelsia 3” in its name: the server pack, Minecraft version, Forge generation, and modpack release must all match the clients. The latest server-pack release listed for the project is Valhelsia 3 – 3.5.1 – SERVER, dated March 21, 2022. Earlier 1.16.x releases are also listed, so select one release deliberately and use it everywhere.

- A separate computer or hosting instance is preferable to the computer used for playing. Running a large modpack server and a client on one machine competes for CPU, memory, storage, and disk bandwidth.
- Use 64-bit Java. For this 1.16.5 pack, the applicable Java branch is Temurin 8 (Java 8).
- Plan for at least 4 GB of server memory. Actual needs increase with player count, loaded chunks, and the mods and settings in use.
- Allow free disk space for the world, backups, logs, libraries, and future growth. The official guidance does not specify a universal minimum disk size.
- A stable wired connection is preferable for a self-hosted machine, particularly when several players explore new terrain at once.
How much RAM should the server have?
Memory figures published for Valhelsia are configuration guidance rather than a controlled performance benchmark. The official server guide says modded servers commonly need 4–8 GB and recommends at least 4 GB for five to seven players when using its named hosting option. CurseForge lists 4 GB as the pack’s minimum allocated server memory. Allocate only what the machine can spare while leaving enough for the operating system and any game client running on it.

The start scripts supplied with the server pack allocate a conservative amount by default. Edit their memory values before normal play, starting at or above the guidance that your machine can support. More assigned RAM is not automatically faster: starving the operating system or another game client can make the entire machine less responsive.

Self-hosting or renting a managed server?
Both approaches run the same Forge files. The difference is who owns the machine and performs the administration.

Treat that offer as time-, region-, and terms-dependent: confirm that it is still active and that the plan has sufficient memory before ordering.
Download the correct Valhelsia 3 server pack
- Open the Valhelsia 3 project on CurseForge and select the Files tab.
- In Additional Files, locate the Server Pack for the release you want. Select the file whose release number will also be installed by every player.
- Download that server archive. Do not create a server by copying only a player’s client instance; the dedicated pack contains the Forge server files, scripts, libraries, and server-side configuration expected by the pack.
- Create a dedicated folder with write permission, such as a folder named for the selected release, and extract the entire archive there. Avoid locations managed by cloud-sync software or protected system directories that can lock or rewrite files.
Keep the release number recorded in your group instructions. If one player installs an earlier 3.x file while the server runs 3.5.1, Forge or the modpack’s handshake can reject the connection even though both installations are called Valhelsia 3.
Install 64-bit Java 8
Use a 64-bit Java 8 runtime, specifically the Temurin 8 LTS build recommended for 1.16-era Valhelsia. A 32-bit runtime, or a newer Java version that the pack does not support, is a common cause of launch failures, missing libraries, and immediate script exits.

Install the 64-bit Temurin 8 LTS build from Adoptium, then allow the supplied Windows or macOS script to use that Java installation. If several Java versions are installed, verify which executable the script calls and change the script or system path so it resolves to Java 8 rather than another runtime.
Before troubleshooting mods, confirm the runtime itself. A server that reports an unsupported class version, cannot create the Forge process, or closes without generating normal logs should be checked for Java bitness and version first.

First launch and EULA acceptance
- In the extracted server folder, run
ServerStart.baton Windows orServerStart.shon Linux and macOS. - The first run normally stops after creating
eula.txt. This is expected; it has not yet created a complete world. - Open
eula.txt, read the Minecraft EULA, and changeeula=falsetoeula=trueonly if you agree to it. Save the file. - Run the same start script again. This run creates the server’s normal files, including
server.properties, the world directory, logs, and Forge-generated data. - Wait for the console to report that the server is ready before connecting. Do not close the window while the process is still generating files.
Adjust the memory values in the supplied start script before inviting players. The scripts are designed to provide a minimum allocation initially; raise it within the limits of the host’s physical memory and leave operating-system headroom.
Configure server.properties before inviting players
Stop the server before editing configuration. Change the file with a plain-text editor, save it, and restart so Forge reads the new values.

World type
For Valhelsia 3, the official guide documents:
level-type=realisticThis selects Quark’s Realistic World Type. World-generation settings are applied when a world is created. If you change a generation setting after the world already exists, stop the server and remove the existing world folder before restarting; deleting it permanently removes that world unless you have a backup.
Allow modded movement
Set:
allow-flight=trueThe guide recommends this on modded servers because some mods can otherwise trigger false flight violations. It does not grant administrator privileges or replace sensible moderation; it changes the server’s movement check.

Access control
- If you want a private server, enable the whitelist in the properties file, then add approved names from the console with
/whitelist add YourPlayerName. - Grant operator status only to trusted administrators with
/op YourPlayerName. Operators can change worlds, permissions, and server behavior. - Keep the server stopped while editing properties and preserve a copy of deliberate changes so an update can restore them accurately.
Let friends connect from outside your home network
Players on the same local network may be able to connect using the server machine’s local address. Friends on the internet require router port forwarding to the machine running the server.
- Find the server port configured in
server.properties. - In the router’s port-forwarding section, create a rule that sends that port to the server machine’s local IP address. Router menus and terminology differ, so use the router manufacturer’s documentation for the exact screens.
- Reserve or otherwise stabilise the server machine’s local address if your router supports that feature; otherwise a DHCP change can silently break the forwarding rule.
- Allow the Java server process and the configured port through the host operating system’s firewall. Permit only the traffic needed for the server rather than disabling the firewall globally.
- Give remote players the reachable address and configured port. Test from a network outside your home, such as a phone hotspot, because testing from inside the same network can produce misleading results.
If outside players cannot connect, check the server console first, then the host firewall, router destination address, port value, and whether your internet provider places the connection behind an upstream carrier-grade NAT. A server that works locally but not remotely is usually a network-path problem, not a mod mismatch.

Install the matching pack for each player
Every player must install the exact Valhelsia 3 release used by the server, including its Minecraft and Forge generation. A client on a different 3.x release can fail during the mod-list or registry handshake.
Valhelsia documents launchers including CurseForge, GDLauncher, and ATLauncher. Follow the launcher’s Valhelsia installation and memory controls, then select the server’s precise release rather than simply installing the newest entry. Third-party launchers may require manual downloads. Use a legally purchased Minecraft account; launchers that permit play without purchasing Minecraft, including TLauncher, are unsupported by the installation guidance.
For a clean diagnosis, have players close the game, confirm the displayed pack version, and remove accidental client-only changes before attempting another connection. Do not copy the server’s entire directory over a client installation; use the launcher and client profile intended for that release.

Large modpacks can pause or produce tick lag while generating terrain for the first time. The Valhelsia guide recommends pre-generating chunks while the server is quiet. This consumes CPU, disk space, and time, so choose an area that matches the group’s actual play area rather than generating an unnecessarily huge region.

Wait for each command to finish before starting the next; launching several jobs together can overwhelm the server. Monitor free disk space and stop if the generated area is larger than your backup or storage plan can support.
Diagnose lag and failed starts
The script closes immediately
- Confirm that Java is 64-bit Java 8 and that the script resolves to that executable.
- Run the script from a terminal so its error remains visible, then inspect the newest log rather than repeatedly double-clicking it.
- Check that the archive was fully extracted and that the account running the script can write to the server folder.
Players receive a mod or registry mismatch
- Compare the server’s pack release with the release selected in each launcher.
- Verify Minecraft and Forge generations, not just the broad “Valhelsia 3” name.
- Do not add or remove mods on one side unless the chosen release’s documentation explicitly requires it.
The server is slow during exploration
- Confirm that the pack is current for the release you intend to run and that the script’s memory allocation is adequate for the machine.
- Use Minecraft’s debug profiler to identify expensive activity.
- Install and use the Spark mod as recommended by the guide to examine tick, CPU, memory, and disk bottlenecks.
- Pre-generate a suitably sized area during a maintenance window, then monitor storage and backup duration.
The server works locally but not for remote friends
- Recheck the configured port, router forwarding destination, and host firewall rule.
- Test from an external network and confirm that the server process is actually listening while the test is made.
- Check whether the internet connection uses carrier-grade NAT or another upstream restriction that prevents inbound forwarding.
Update Valhelsia 3 without losing the world
Do not overwrite a running installation or delete files before making a complete backup. Updates can change mods, configs, scripts, and Forge libraries, so treat each release as a replacement operation with deliberate restoration of your custom settings.
- Read the new release changelog and note required Minecraft, Forge, Java, or migration changes.
- Tell players the maintenance window, then stop the server cleanly with
/stop. - Make a complete backup of the server directory, especially the world, configuration, permissions, scripts, and any files you changed. Keep the backup separate from the live folder.
- Download the replacement Server Pack for the target release.
- In the old server directory, remove these folders when they are present:
config,defaultconfigs,libraries,openloader,mods,kubejs, andscripts. Remove the old Forge jar as directed by the release procedure. - Copy the new pack’s contents into the server directory. Folder names vary by release, so do not delete unrelated files outside the documented server directory.
- Restore deliberate custom changes, such as whitelist data, operator settings, selected
server.propertiesvalues, and scripts, only after comparing them with the new pack’s defaults. - Start the server and watch the console for migration errors before allowing players to join. Make a fresh backup once the updated world has started successfully.
If the new release fails, stop it, preserve the failed installation for diagnosis, and restore the pre-update backup rather than trying to repair a partially replaced directory in place.
Operational checklist
- Server and all clients use the same Valhelsia 3 release, Minecraft version, and Forge generation.
- 64-bit Java 8 is installed and selected by the start script.
- Memory allocation is adjusted for the host while leaving operating-system headroom.
- The EULA has been accepted in
eula.txt. server.propertieshas the intended world type, movement setting, whitelist policy, and port.- The host firewall permits the server, and the router forwards the configured port to the correct machine when remote access is required.
- Backups include the world and configuration before every update or destructive world-generation change.
- Players use supported launchers and legally purchased Minecraft accounts.
Following this sequence gives you a reproducible Forge server: the dedicated pack supplies the correct files, Java 8 runs the 1.16.5 generation, the EULA and properties enable the service, and matching client releases prevent connection errors. Network forwarding and maintenance are the remaining responsibilities for a self-hosted installation.
