Set up a Valve Index in this order: prepare and update a VR-ready PC, clear a safe play area, position and power compatible base stations, connect the headset’s DisplayPort, USB 3.0, and power leads, launch SteamVR, complete Room Setup, then fit the headset and controllers. For room-scale play, Valve specifies at least 2 m × 1.5 m (6.5 ft × 5 ft) of clear space. Correct station height, unobstructed line of sight, stable mounting, and a properly completed Room Setup prevent most tracking and floor-orientation problems.
What you need before connecting the Index
Gather the headset and its tether, power adapter, two Index controllers, compatible SteamVR base stations, a VR-capable Windows PC, and an available DisplayPort connection on the graphics card. A laptop may require a suitable adapter for its video output. You will also need a USB 3.0 port and a nearby power outlet for the headset. Base stations each need power, but they do not connect to the PC with a tracking cable in the normal setup.

Install Steam and SteamVR before plugging everything in. Run Valve’s official VR compatibility check, update the computer’s graphics drivers, and restart the PC if a driver installer requests it. This catches graphics hardware or driver problems before you are standing in a headset trying to diagnose them.
Prepare the room
Choose the largest unobstructed area available. You should be able to extend both arms while holding the controllers without hitting a wall, ceiling fixture, television, furniture, or another person. Remove low objects and loose cables from the active area, keep pets and other people outside it while playing, and avoid placing the boundary across stairs or directly beside windows.

Valve’s minimum for room-scale VR is 2 m × 1.5 m (6.5 ft × 5 ft) of free space. Seated and standing-only play can use less, but you still need enough room to move your hands safely and avoid nearby objects. The minimum is a starting requirement, not a guarantee that every game’s movement will fit your room.
Choose and position the base stations
Base stations track the headset and controllers by sweeping the room with infrared light. Every tracked device needs a clear view of the stations at the moments it is being tracked, so placement matters more than simply having both units powered.
The recommended two-station layout
For most room-scale spaces, start with two stations in opposite corners, aimed toward the center of the play area. Valve’s ideal guidance is to mount them at least 2 m (6.5 ft) above the floor, angle them down 30–45 degrees, and keep them no more than 5 m (16 ft) apart. This geometry is useful guidance rather than a universal requirement: rooms with different shapes can work when each station sees the active area clearly.

| Number of stations | Two for most room-scale rooms; one can work for seated or standing-only use | Two stations reduce the chance that your headset or hands lose sight of a station as you turn. |
| Height | At least 2 m (6.5 ft) is Valve’s ideal starting point | A high position gives the stations a broad view over your body and furniture. |
| Angle | Point down 30–45 degrees from above | The sweeps reach the floor and controller positions instead of passing over them. |
| Separation | No more than 5 m (16 ft) apart in the ideal layout | Both stations should cover the same play area without excessive distance. |
| Surface | Solid and resistant to vibration | Movement or vibration can make tracking appear to drift even when the stations are aimed correctly. |
| Line of sight | Keep the front of each station visible from the active area | Walls, tall furniture, curtains, or other obstructions can block tracking. |
Remove protective film from the front lens area before use. After a station is powered, its front LED should be visible. Aim the station at the center of the space rather than at the wall behind you.
When one station is enough
One station can be sufficient for seated or standing-only play, especially when you remain facing the same direction. Valve still recommends two stations because a second view reduces the chance of losing tracking when your body or a controller blocks the first station. For room-scale play, treat two stations as the normal starting point.

Large rooms and additional coverage
Valve notes that additional stations may provide more tracking coverage and accuracy when the area exceeds 5 m × 5 m. Do not assume that adding units automatically solves a blocked or vibrating installation; first correct visibility, height, aim, and stability.
Base-station generation compatibility
Index works with either 1.0 or 2.0 base stations, but those generations cannot be mixed in one VR setup. Confirm the generation of every station before combining equipment. A two-station kit can have a different channel arrangement from individually purchased stations, so follow SteamVR’s channel notice rather than changing settings pre-emptively.
Optional wall mounting
Wall mounting is not required. A secure tabletop or shelf position can work when the station has the correct view and does not vibrate. If you choose to mount a station, Valve’s guide lists a Phillips-head screwdriver and a drill with a 1/4-inch or 6-mm bit.
- Hold the wall plate in the selected position and mark its holes.
- Drill the marked holes with the appropriate bit.
- For drywall, install suitable anchors. Do not use drywall anchors in a stud; fasten directly to the stud instead.
- Fasten the wall plate, attach the ball joint, and secure the station.
- Aim the station toward the center of the play area, then verify that its view is not blocked.
For brick, concrete, paneling, or another material, use a fastening method rated for that material. The important result is a rigid, vibration-resistant mount, not a particular bracket brand.
Connect the Index headset to the PC
Leave the headset on a safe surface while making the connections. The Index tether has separate video, USB, and power connections.

- Plug the headset’s DisplayPort lead into a DisplayPort output on the computer’s graphics card, not a motherboard video output. If your laptop lacks a full-size DisplayPort connection, use an adapter that supports the required video signal.
- Plug the headset’s USB lead into a USB 3.0 port on the PC.
- Connect the headset power adapter to the tether and plug the adapter into a wall outlet or suitable power strip.
- Check that the headset tether and breakaway connection are fully seated. A tether can look connected while not being inserted completely.
- Power the base stations and confirm that each front LED is visible.
Keep the tether away from chair wheels and walking paths. Do not pull it tight while turning or reaching; a cable that is under tension can disconnect or move the computer.
Launch SteamVR and complete Room Setup
Start SteamVR from the Steam client’s VR control, or press the System button on a controller after the headset and stations are powered. Wait for the SteamVR monitor to show the connected devices as ready before beginning the room procedure.
Room-scale setup
- Choose the room-scale option when SteamVR presents the play-mode choices.
- Follow the prompts to identify the floor and establish the front-facing direction.
- Walk around the usable area while holding the controller as instructed, drawing the room boundary around furniture and other hazards.
- Keep the boundary inside the genuinely clear space rather than tracing over a sofa, desk, stair edge, or window.
- Complete the calibration and test the virtual floor and boundary from several points in the room.
Room Setup records the floor height, front orientation, and usable boundary that SteamVR presents to games. If your environment changes, run the procedure again instead of trying to compensate inside each individual game.
Standing or seated setup
Choose standing-only or seated play when you do not have a room-scale area. Follow SteamVR’s prompts for floor height and facing direction, then verify that the virtual floor is level with the real floor or the expected seated position. A smaller play mode does not remove the need to keep controllers clear of walls and furniture.
When to rerun Room Setup
- You moved either base station or changed its angle or height.
- The virtual floor appears too high or too low.
- The front-facing direction points toward the wrong side of the room.
- You rearranged furniture or changed from seated play to room-scale play.
- The boundary no longer matches the safe area.
Restart SteamVR after major placement changes, then run Room Setup again. This is usually faster and safer than continuing with a stale boundary.

Fit the headset for a clear, comfortable image
A correct fit improves clarity and reduces pressure. Make adjustments while looking at a high-contrast object in SteamVR rather than judging sharpness from a dark scene.
- Loosen the rear adjustment knob and hold the headset where the image is clearest.
- Settle the rear strap on the back of your head, then tighten the knob until the headset is snug without excessive pressure.
- Adjust the top strap so it supports some of the headset’s weight instead of letting the front pull downward.
- Adjust eye relief to balance field of view with clearance for glasses. Move the lenses closer only when they do not touch your glasses or eyelashes.
- Set the IPD with the physical slider. If you do not know your measured IPD, move the slider slowly while looking at text and stop at the clearest image.
- Position the off-ear speakers over the middle of your ears. They should sit close enough to sound clear without touching the ears.
If one eye is consistently blurrier, check that the headset is level and centered before changing IPD. Tightening the rear knob cannot correct a headset that is sitting too high, low, or tilted.
Fit and secure the Index controllers
- Open the hand strap and slide your hand through it.
- Rest your index finger on the trigger and your thumb on the Track Button.
- Open and close your hand once to check that the controller remains in place.
- Adjust the controller’s adjustment arm if your thumb does not reach the controls naturally.
- Tighten the strap until the controller stays secure while your hand opens and closes, but not so tightly that it restricts circulation.
- Attach and use the supplied wrist lanyard for an additional safeguard, especially during fast or physical games.
Not all content supports Index finger tracking. A game may therefore show different hand animation or respond only to the physical buttons even when the controller is fitted correctly.
Use this checklist before your first game
- SteamVR is installed and the graphics driver is current.
- The play area meets the 2 m × 1.5 m (6.5 ft × 5 ft) room-scale minimum, or you selected seated/standing mode.
- Both stations are powered, stable, aimed at the center, and visible from the play area.
- No window, mirror, glossy display, or other reflective surface is confusing the tracking view.
- The headset DisplayPort lead is in the graphics card, USB is in USB 3.0, and the power adapter is connected.
- SteamVR’s monitor shows the headset, controllers, and stations as ready.
- Room Setup reports the correct floor, front direction, and boundary.
- The headset is snug and centered, and both controller straps are secure.
Troubleshoot common setup failures
The headset is missing or not ready
- Confirm that the headset power adapter is plugged into a live outlet.
- Reseat the DisplayPort connector at the graphics card and the USB connector at the PC.
- Check that DisplayPort is connected to the dedicated graphics card rather than a motherboard port.
- Inspect and reseat the headset tether and breakaway connection.
- Restart SteamVR, then restart the PC if the device still does not appear.
In SteamVR, a solid green status icon indicates a ready device. The headset’s own green LEDs can indicate standby, so use the SteamVR status state rather than the headset light alone to decide whether setup is complete.
Tracking drifts, jitters, or drops out
- Verify that every station is powered and its front view reaches the active area.
- Check that a station has not been bumped, tilted, or placed on a vibrating surface.
- Remove or cover reflective surfaces such as mirrors and windows near the tracking view.
- Look for furniture, curtains, or other objects blocking one station when you turn.
- Restart SteamVR and rerun Room Setup after correcting placement.
Do not begin by changing channel settings unless SteamVR reports a conflict. Physical visibility and stability are more common causes of intermittent tracking.

SteamVR reports a base-station channel conflict
Open the SteamVR status window’s Base Station Settings. Use the automatic channel configuration when offered, or assign channels manually as directed by SteamVR’s notice. Valve says stations supplied in a kit ship configured on channels 1 and 2, while individually purchased stations use channels between 3 and 16. The correct channel depends on the complete set of stations in your room; follow the conflict message rather than applying a preset blindly.
The virtual floor or front direction is wrong
Rerun Room Setup and carefully follow its floor and orientation prompts. Check the result while standing in the center of the real play area. If the problem returns, restart SteamVR, verify the graphics driver, and repeat the setup with the stations in their final positions.
A mixed setup will not track correctly
Check the station generation before investigating software settings. Index supports 1.0 or 2.0 base stations, but 1.0 and 2.0 units cannot be mixed in the same setup. Replace or separate incompatible generations rather than trying to solve the problem with channels or Room Setup.

Choosing a layout for your room
| Your situation | Practical starting layout | Checks before playing |
|---|---|---|
| Room-scale area up to the typical two-station coverage | Two stations in opposite corners, at least 2 m high, angled down toward center | Keep them stable, within the ideal 5 m separation, and unobstructed. |
| Seated simulator or desk use | One station may work; two are still preferable | Ensure the station can see the headset and controllers from the seated position. |
| Standing-only play against one wall | One station can work, with a second improving reliability | Keep hands and headset in the station’s view when turning. |
| Area larger than 5 m × 5 m | Evaluate additional compatible stations for coverage | Confirm generation compatibility and follow SteamVR’s channel guidance. |
| Low mounting position | Aim upward toward the center rather than copying the downward angle used above head height | Check that furniture and your body do not block the view. |
The best arrangement is the one that gives every station a stable, overlapping view of the actual play area while keeping power cables safely out of the way. Valve’s height, angle, distance, and two-station figures are reliable starting points, but the room’s shape and obstacles determine the final placement.
