Add an SRV record only when the game client supports SRV lookups and you want players to connect without entering a non-default port. For a Minecraft Java-style setup, the usual pair is an A record for play.example.com and an SRV record owned by _minecraft._tcp.play. DNS only publishes the destination; the server process, firewall and router still have to accept the game connection.
Godlike.Host hosts servers for Minecraft and more than 40 other games, with free DDoS protection and 24/7 support.
A record versus SRV record: what each one does
An A record answers the basic question, “What IPv4 address belongs to this hostname?” An SRV record answers a more specific question, “Which host and port provide this service?” They are complementary records, not interchangeable alternatives.

| Setup | Use it when | What players enter | Records required | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A only | The client uses its default port, or the client does not support SRV. | The hostname, or the hostname plus a port if the game requires one. | An A record, and optionally an AAAA record for IPv6. | Simplest DNS configuration, but a custom port may still need to be shared. |
| A plus SRV | The client supports the relevant service lookup and the server listens on a non-default port. | Usually the hostname alone. | An A or AAAA record for the SRV target, plus the SRV record. | Easier for players, with an additional record and more fields to maintain. |
An SRV record does not replace the address record for its target. RFC 2782 requires the target to resolve to an address record, and the target should be a hostname rather than a literal IP address.

- The domain and authoritative DNS provider: Make the change wherever the domain’s active nameservers point. Editing DNS at a registrar that is not authoritative for the zone will have no effect.
- A player-facing hostname: Decide on a name such as
play.example.com. In many control panels, the Name field is entered as justplaybecause the provider appendsexample.com. - The public address: Use the server’s publicly reachable IPv4 address for an A record. If the connection should also work over IPv6, obtain the correct IPv6 address for an AAAA record.
- The listening port: Confirm the port on which the game process is actually listening. An SRV record must publish this port exactly.
- Client support: Verify that the game client queries the service and protocol name you plan to publish. The
_minecraft._tcpconvention is for Minecraft-style clients; it is not a universal game setting. - Network access: Confirm that the host firewall, router port-forwarding rule and upstream network permit the game traffic. DNS cannot create those rules.
Step 1: Open the authoritative DNS record editor
Sign in to the provider that hosts the domain’s authoritative DNS zone and open its DNS records page. Cloudflare’s documented path is DNS Records → Add record, followed by choosing a record type, completing the fields and saving; its record-management documentation describes the same workflow. The labels differ at other providers, but the required fields are broadly the same.
If you are unsure which service is authoritative, inspect the domain’s nameserver delegation at your registrar or use a DNS lookup that shows the responding nameservers. Do not create duplicate records at several providers and expect them to combine.
Step 2: Add the A record for the game hostname
- Choose A as the record type.
- Enter the hostname label. For a full hostname of
play.example.com, the field is commonlyplay; use the provider’s displayed format rather than entering the domain twice. - Enter the server’s public IPv4 address in the address or content field.
- Choose a TTL allowed by the provider. TTL controls how long recursive resolvers may cache the answer; it is not a promise that every network will refresh at one exact time.
- Leave any web-proxy or acceleration feature disabled unless the provider explicitly supports the game protocol and port you use. A normal HTTP proxy is not a general-purpose game-server proxy.
- Save the record.
The result should be conceptually equivalent to this illustrative entry:
| Type | Name | Value | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | play |
198.51.100.42 (illustrative address) |
Maps play.example.com to the server’s IPv4 endpoint. |
Use the real public address in production. A private address such as 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x or 172.16.x.x–172.31.x.x is not a public destination for players on the internet.
When to add an AAAA record
Add an AAAA record for the same hostname only when the server has a stable, reachable IPv6 address and the game service is configured to accept IPv6 traffic. Publishing an AAAA record can cause clients with working IPv6 connectivity to choose IPv6 first, so an incorrect or firewalled AAAA value can make a setup appear randomly broken even though its A record is correct. Keep the A record for IPv4 players unless you intentionally run an IPv6-only service.

Step 3: Add the SRV record when the game and port require it
Use SRV when all of these conditions are true: the game client supports SRV discovery, the service name and protocol are documented, and the listener uses a port that players should not have to type. If the client ignores SRV, the record has no effect and players must use the game’s normal address-and-port syntax.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The Minecraft Java-style owner name
For a hostname play.example.com, the conventional owner name is:
_minecraft._tcp.play.example.com
Many DNS panels split that into three fields:
- Service:
_minecraft - Protocol:
_tcp - Name:
play
Other panels provide one Name field. In that case, enter _minecraft._tcp.play if the panel appends the zone automatically, or the complete fully qualified name if it does not. Check the editor’s preview after saving; accidentally producing _minecraft._tcp.play.example.com.example.com is a common naming error.
Complete the SRV fields
- Choose SRV as the type.
- Set the owner/service name as described above.
- Set Priority. A single-server setup commonly uses
0. Lower numbers have preference when several records advertise the same service. - Set Weight. A single-server setup commonly uses
0. Weight is used to distribute selections among records with the same priority; it is not a substitute for priority. - Enter the server’s actual game Port, including a custom port if the listener does not use the game’s default.
- Set Target to a hostname such as
play.example.com, not to an IP address. The target must resolve through an A and/or AAAA record. - Save the record.
The equivalent illustrative pair is:
| Type | Name/owner | Fields | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | play |
Address: 198.51.100.42 (illustrative) |
The target hostname has an IPv4 address. |
| SRV | _minecraft._tcp.play |
Priority: 0; Weight: 0; Port: 25580 (illustrative); Target: play.example.com |
An SRV-aware client can discover the host and custom port. |
The port and address above are examples only. Replace them with the values configured on your server. Do not put the SRV target on a hostname that has no A or AAAA record.

- Does the client document SRV support for this service? If no or unknown, use A (and AAAA when appropriate) and plan to share the port in the game’s normal format.
- Does the server listen on the client’s default port? If yes, an A record is often sufficient even when the client supports SRV.
- Is the listener on a non-default port? If yes and SRV is supported, add SRV so the hostname can identify that port.
- Do you need more than one server? SRV priority and weight can describe preferred and alternate endpoints, but every advertised target needs its own address record and operational monitoring.
| Question | A only | A plus SRV |
|---|---|---|
| Client supports the relevant SRV lookup? | Not required. | Required. |
| Server uses a non-default port? | Players may need to enter the port. | The client can discover the port if it honors SRV. |
| Sharing the address | Hostname, possibly followed by a port. | Usually the hostname alone. |
| DNS administration | One address record. | Address record plus service record, with matching target and port. |
SRV improves convenience; it does not conceal the listening port from someone who inspects DNS or observes a connection. It also does not provide encryption, authentication or DDoS protection.
Provider settings that affect a game hostname
Proxy mode
Some DNS dashboards offer a proxy switch beside an A or AAAA record. A standard web proxy is designed for web traffic and may not pass arbitrary game TCP or UDP connections. For a direct game server, publish ordinary DNS (often labeled DNS-only) unless the provider specifically documents support for your game protocol and port. Apply the same policy to the SRV target hostname.
TTL and caching
TTL is the cache lifetime communicated to recursive resolvers. When you change an address or port, some players can continue receiving the old answer until their resolver’s cached TTL expires. Standards and provider documentation do not promise one universal propagation time, so test from multiple networks and allow for existing caches. Before a planned migration, a lower TTL can reduce the caching window; after the change is stable, choose a longer value if reducing query volume is important.
DNSSEC
DNSSEC can authenticate DNS answers when the zone and its delegation are configured correctly. It does not open the game port or prove that the server process is healthy. If you change nameservers or DNSSEC keys during a migration, verify the delegation and signatures separately because a validation failure can make otherwise correct records appear unavailable.

If the server’s public IPv4 address changes, the A record becomes stale. After every address update, confirm that the SRV target still resolves to the new address.

Verify the records before asking players to connect
Check the public DNS view, not only the control panel’s saved form. From a machine with the standard DNS tools installed, query the address and service records separately:
dig A play.example.com +short
dig AAAA play.example.com +short
dig SRV _minecraft._tcp.play.example.com +short
The A query should return the expected public IPv4 address. The AAAA query should be empty unless you intentionally published IPv6. The SRV response should show four key values in order: priority, weight, port and target, with the target ending in a hostname that has an A or AAAA answer.
On Windows, the equivalent checks can be made with:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
nslookup -type=A play.example.com
nslookup -type=SRV _minecraft._tcp.play.example.com
Query a public resolver and, if possible, a resolver used by a different network. A result from one resolver can still be cached while another has refreshed. If the record is absent everywhere, revisit the authoritative zone, owner name and nameserver delegation rather than waiting for propagation.
Test the actual game connection
- Confirm that the game server process is running and listening on the port published in the A/SRV configuration.
- Confirm the router forwards that port from the public interface to the correct internal host, when the server is behind NAT.
- Allow the same port and protocol through the host firewall and any upstream firewall.
- From outside the server’s LAN, add the hostname in the game client. An external test avoids a false result caused by routers that do not support hairpin NAT.
- If the game supports both direct port entry and SRV discovery, test the direct address-and-port form separately. A successful direct connection points to a client SRV or naming issue; a failed direct connection points to network reachability or the server process.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The hostname does not resolve
- Check that you edited the authoritative provider, not a secondary DNS dashboard.
- Check whether the provider expects
playorplay.example.comin the Name field. - Look for a duplicated zone suffix or an accidental leading protocol such as
https://. - Check the domain’s nameserver delegation and query again after correcting it.
The A record resolves, but players cannot join
- Compare the returned address with the current public address of the server connection. A stale address is common after an ISP change.
- Check that the game is listening on the same port you intend players to use.
- Check NAT forwarding and host or upstream firewall rules. A correct DNS answer does not alter either one.
- Test from an external network. A local test can fail even when internet players can connect, or succeed through a local-only route that internet players cannot use.
The A record works, but SRV does not
- Query the exact owner name, including both underscores:
_minecraft._tcp.play.example.com. - Check each SRV field separately: priority, weight, port and target.
- Make sure the target is a hostname with an A or AAAA record, never an IP literal.
- Confirm that the client actually implements the service lookup. An SRV record is ignored by clients that do not query it.
- Check that the published port is the server’s listening port, not the port used by a different service.
Some players see the old address
This is normally resolver caching. Compare answers from multiple networks, note the TTL returned with each answer, and wait for the cached value to expire. Do not keep changing the record every few minutes; frequent edits make it harder to determine which value each resolver has stored.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Safe changes and ongoing maintenance
Keep a small record of the hostname, current public address, game port, TTL choice and the date of each change. When moving the server, lower the TTL in advance if practical, update the A record, verify the new answer externally, and leave the old server available during the expected cache window. If the port changes but the hostname and target remain the same, update the SRV port and test with an SRV lookup before announcing the change.
For multiple servers, give each server its own target hostname and address record. Use SRV priority to express preferred versus backup endpoints and weight only when you intentionally want selection among equal-priority records. Remove retired targets from both their address records and SRV advertisements so clients are not sent to a server that no longer exists.

Practical record checklist
- The A record name resolves to the current public IPv4 address.
- An AAAA record is published only when IPv6 is configured and reachable.
- The SRV owner uses the documented service and protocol, such as
_minecraft._tcp.play. - Priority and weight are intentional;
0/0is a common single-server choice. - The SRV port exactly matches the game listener.
- The SRV target is a hostname with an A and/or AAAA record.
- Any web-proxy mode is disabled unless game-protocol support is explicitly documented.
- External DNS queries show the expected answers.
- The process, NAT rule and firewall permit the published port.
- The game client is tested from outside the server’s LAN.
Cloudflare’s DNS record-type documentation, updated June 2, 2026, describes A and AAAA records as mappings from names to IPv4 and IPv6 addresses and describes SRV as a host-and-port record for a specific service. Its DNS record-management documentation was updated May 6, 2026, and its subdomain documentation April 16, 2026. RFC 2782, published in February 2000, defines the _service._protocol form and the priority, weight, port and target fields used by SRV.
