Why Blueprints Don’t Work on a Satisfactory Server (and How to Fix Them)

Satisfactory multiplayer uses the host or dedicated server’s blueprint files—not automatically every player’s local copy. Find the right session folder, copy the .sbp and .sbpcfg files, reload the save or restart the server, and troubleshoot service accounts, synchronization and logs.

If a Satisfactory blueprint works in single-player but is missing or cannot be placed on a multiplayer server, the usual problem is file authority: the blueprint is saved on your computer, while the host or dedicated server is the process that must load it. Copy the blueprint files to the authoritative machine’s session folder, use the exact active session name, then reload the save or restart the server. Player-hosted and dedicated sessions use different accounts and paths, so putting files in your own local folder may have no effect.

What “working” means in multiplayer

A blueprint is not automatically synchronized from every player to the session. Satisfactory stores a blueprint as a Blueprint Module (.sbp) and, when supplied, a matching Blueprint Config File (.sbpcfg). The game process hosting the session reads those files from its own blueprint directory. Other players can see and use the blueprint only after that authority has loaded it.

That creates two common situations:

  • In player-hosted multiplayer, the host’s PC is authoritative. A client can have a perfectly valid blueprint locally and still be unable to use it in the host’s world.
  • On a dedicated server, the server machine and its service account are authoritative. Files in an administrator’s personal profile, or in a client’s profile, are not necessarily visible to the running server.

The build menu can therefore look inconsistent: a blueprint may appear because a client has a local copy, yet placement can fail because the server does not have the corresponding file or cannot synchronize it. Conversely, a server-side file may not appear until the save is reloaded or the server is restarted.

Player-hosted multiplayer: put the files on the host

When a friend starts a normal multiplayer session from their PC, that friend is the host even if another player created the blueprint. The host must receive the files and place them in the host’s blueprint directory. Uploading them only to your own computer cannot repair a host-authority problem.

  • [Games need exclusions and runtimes, not malware]Some customers ask why our retro game drives can trigger Windows Security warnings. Many game files are older DLLs that Windows Defender sometimes flags as threats. They are not viruses or malware—just old or uncommon code causing false positives. We temporarily add them to the exclusion list so they aren't blocked, then re-enable Security to keep your PC protected. Many classic games also need legacy VC++ and DirectX runtimes, which modern Windows doesn't include by default. Installing them ensures compatibility and smooth play. Your safety matters to us—these are safe, standard steps for retro games.
  • [Important:Before you buy]your OS will show ~12.7TB due to decimal/binary measurement difference – this is a common practice among international manufacturers, not a capacity labeling error. Procedure for a hosted game

  1. Ask the host to close the game or at least leave the active session before changing files.
  2. Send the host the blueprint’s .sbp file and the matching .sbpcfg file if one was included with the download. Keep the pair together and do not rename one without the other.
  3. Have the host locate the blueprint directory associated with the active session and copy the files into the folder whose name matches that session exactly.
  4. Have the host reload the save. If the blueprint still does not appear, quit to the desktop and start the session again.
  5. Test with a small, uncomplicated blueprint before trying the original large design.

The host may need to create a blueprint in-game first. On some installations the blueprint directory is not created until the game has saved at least one blueprint.

Dedicated-server paths and service accounts

A dedicated server does not use the interactive player’s profile by default. Use the path that matches the server operating system and the account running the server:

Server setup Blueprint root Important detail
Linux ~/.config/Epic/FactoryGame/Saved/SaveGames/blueprints/{SESSION NAME} The tilde refers to the home directory of the account running the server.
Windows, started as a normal user %LOCALAPPDATA%FactoryGameSavedSaveGamesblueprints{SESSION NAME} Use the same Windows user that launches the server process.
Windows, NSSM service %WINDIR%System32configsystemprofileAppDataLocalFactoryGameSavedSaveGamesblueprints{SESSION NAME} NSSM commonly runs under the system profile rather than an administrator’s profile.
Windows Server service %WINDIR%ServiceProfilesNetworkServiceAppDataLocalFactoryGameSavedSaveGamesblueprints{SESSION NAME} The NetworkService profile is separate from interactive user profiles.

Replace {SESSION NAME} with the exact name of the active session. Case, spaces and punctuation matter. If the server has never created a blueprint, the final directory may not exist; create a blueprint through the game first or create the required folder under the server’s save directory.

Why the Windows account matters

Opening a path in File Explorer as an administrator does not prove that the service can read it. A service may run as LocalSystem, NetworkService or another configured account, each with a different AppData or home directory. Check the service properties or launch configuration, then transfer the files into that account’s profile. Managed hosting panels may expose this as a file manager or SFTP account; if neither is available, the host may need to install the files for you.

Use the exact session-name folder

Blueprints are grouped by session name, not simply by the existence of a global “blueprints” folder. A valid file in the wrong session folder behaves like a missing file. Confirm the name shown for the save you are opening and compare it character-for-character with the directory name on disk.

Session-name handling has changed over the game’s patch history. Updates have addressed invalid characters, clients seeing blueprints that were not present on the server, and synchronization occurring before the server had finished loading. That history is why a path copied from an old forum post may be technically correct but still fail for a current save with a different name.

Checks before copying

  • Verify that you are editing the server’s current save location, not a backup or an old installation.
  • Confirm the save’s session name rather than relying on a shortened folder label.
  • Look for duplicate folders that differ only by punctuation, capitalization or a trailing space.
  • Ensure the files are not still inside a downloaded archive and do not have hidden extensions such as .sbp.sbp.

Copy both blueprint files correctly

The .sbp file contains the blueprint module. A matching .sbpcfg can carry the shared blueprint’s configuration and metadata. A download may include only the module, but when both files are supplied, copy both to the same session directory.

  1. Close the game or stop the dedicated-server process.
  2. Extract the download to a temporary location and inspect the filenames.
  3. Copy the .sbp and matching .sbpcfg into the exact session folder.
  4. Do not overwrite a known-good file without keeping a backup; append a temporary suffix to a backup outside the active folder instead of changing the live extension.
  5. Start the server or load the save again.

File permissions can also block loading. The account running the server needs read access to the directory and files; on Linux, check ownership and mode bits, and on Windows check the service account’s permissions. A file visible to your desktop account may still be unreadable by the service.

Reloading is part of the installation

Copying a file while the world is running does not guarantee that Satisfactory will scan it immediately. Reload the save after downloading a blueprint. For a dedicated server, a full stop and restart is the dependable method because it reloads the server-side blueprint list and the save.

After restarting, allow the server to finish loading before connecting. Joining during an early loading phase can reproduce older synchronization failures in which the client receives an incomplete list. If a host refuses to restart a busy world, schedule the change for a maintenance window rather than repeatedly reconnecting while files are being replaced.

When the blueprint is visible but placement fails

Visibility and successful placement are separate tests. If the blueprint appears in the menu but placing it causes an error, a crash or no action, isolate the file before changing network settings.

Use a controlled test

  1. Back up the suspect files and remove or quarantine the blueprint temporarily.
  2. Install a very small blueprint known to be simple, then restart or reload.
  3. Attempt placement in a clear area with the required materials and power-related prerequisites satisfied.
  4. If the simple blueprint works, restore the suspect blueprint alone and test it again.
  5. If every blueprint fails, treat the issue as an authority, synchronization or installation problem rather than a defect in one design.

Historical patch notes describe multiplayer blueprint crashes while loading before synchronization, problems involving the AWESOME Sink, and other dedicated-server failures. Those reports do not establish that every current build has the same defect, but they explain why a specific blueprint can fail even when the directory and extension are correct. Record the game build and reproduce the issue with a minimal file before reporting it.

Read the dedicated-server log

Dedicated-server logs are stored under the server installation’s FactoryGame/Saved/Logs directory. The current log is named FactoryGame.log. Stop the server or copy the log before a later restart overwrites useful context, then search around the startup time for blueprint, session, synchronization, access or loading errors.

A useful log check answers three questions:

  • Did the server read the expected save and session name?
  • Did it discover the blueprint directory and attempt to load the file?
  • Did an error occur before clients synchronized their blueprint list?

Keep the exact filename, timestamp and game version when escalating a reproducible failure. A log showing no attempt to read the file usually points to the wrong account or session folder; a parse or crash entry points toward the blueprint itself or a build-specific bug.

Player-hosted versus dedicated: who controls the fix?

Question Player-hosted multiplayer Dedicated server
Authoritative blueprint directory The host PC’s Satisfactory profile and active session folder The server machine’s profile for the account running the service
Where the files must be uploaded To the host’s local filesystem To the server filesystem, commonly through a panel, SFTP or direct administration
Who can perform the change The host, or someone with access to the host PC The server administrator or managed host with filesystem access
Reload required Reload the save; restarting the host is the fallback Restart the dedicated server after copying files
Common mistake A client installs the file only in their own profile An administrator copies files into an interactive Windows profile instead of the service profile

Version history and old advice

Blueprints arrived with Update 7, and subsequent patches recorded several multiplayer and dedicated-server corrections: invalid session-name handling, client and server lists getting out of sync, loading before synchronization completed, and blueprint-related crashes. Therefore, instructions written for an earlier update may describe a different symptom even when the basic file model is unchanged.

In a July 9, 2024 developer Q&A transcription, the developers said the 1.0 plan was to keep dedicated-server blueprint files server-side while acknowledging a longer-term goal of making access easier. The practical implication is that dedicated-server administrators should still expect to manage the server’s files rather than assuming every client upload will be synchronized automatically.

Second-line checks when the path is correct

Only after confirming authority, session name, extensions, permissions and reload timing should you investigate broader multiplayer faults. Official multiplayer support guidance includes verifying game files, updating graphics drivers, checking firewall and antivirus permissions, trying another host, setting Network Quality to Ultra and testing a fresh save. These steps can repair installation or connectivity problems, but they do not replace copying a blueprint to the correct server-side directory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the next test by symptom

  • No blueprints at all: recheck the service account, session folder and restart procedure.
  • Only one blueprint fails: quarantine it and test a simple blueprint; inspect the log for a file-specific error.
  • Players disconnect or the list changes during loading: wait for full server startup, then test synchronization on a fresh save.
  • Other multiplayer features fail too: verify files, firewall permissions and network quality after the blueprint path is confirmed.

A complete recovery checklist

  1. Identify whether the session is hosted by a player or runs on a dedicated server.
  2. Determine which computer and operating-system account owns the authoritative files.
  3. Confirm the active session name exactly.
  4. Locate the correct OS-specific blueprint root and create the session folder if necessary.
  5. Copy the .sbp and matching .sbpcfg, preserving their names.
  6. Check that the server account can read the directory and files.
  7. Reload the save or restart the dedicated server completely.
  8. Wait for startup and test a small blueprint.
  9. Test the original blueprint in isolation.
  10. Read FactoryGame/Saved/Logs/FactoryGame.log and pursue broader network or file-integrity checks only if the path and authority are correct.
