The reliable setup is: download All of Fabric 3’s dedicated server pack, run it with Java 8 and Fabric, accept Minecraft’s EULA, give the process about 8 GB of memory for a small group, then forward TCP port 25565. Every player must use the identical All of Fabric 3 version as the server.
Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
What you need before installing
All of Fabric 3 is a Fabric modpack for Minecraft 1.16.5. You need Minecraft: Java Edition, a computer that can remain online while people play, and an account that has accepted Minecraft’s licensing terms. The server itself does not use the Minecraft client launcher after installation, but each player still needs a legitimate Java Edition installation to join.

Fabric’s official headless-server guide states that Minecraft 1.16.5 and older require Java 8.
- Server files: the separate All of Fabric 3 server pack from the pack’s CurseForge page.
- Storage: a clean directory with room for the mod jars, configuration files, logs and generated world.
- Network: a local network address for the host computer, router access for port forwarding, and firewall access for TCP 25565.
- Memory: plan for roughly 8 GB for a small group, then adjust after observing startup and in-game performance.
Do not install the server inside a general downloads folder that contains unrelated modpacks. A dedicated directory makes the start script, EULA file, logs and world data much easier to identify and back up.
Download the correct All of Fabric 3 archive
Choose the dedicated server pack
Open the All of Fabric 3 page on CurseForge and select its separate server pack for the release you intend to run. The pack source describes each release’s server archive as containing the mod jars, configuration files and a start script needed for a dedicated server.

The source page lists All of Fabric 3 – 2.8.8 as its newest release on that page. Treat that as the version reference for this installation, not as a promise that no later release has appeared elsewhere. Record the exact version number you download and give that same number to every player.
The pack page also reports 1.1 million downloads for TeamAOE’s project in 2022. That is a historical download count, not a performance measurement or a guarantee of compatibility with other mods.
Do not use the client zip
The zip downloaded by a launcher for a client installation is only a manifest. As the pack’s guide puts it, “The client zip your launcher downloads is only a manifest and does not run as a server.” It will not provide a functioning dedicated server by itself.
- Download the archive explicitly labeled as the server pack.
- Create a new directory such as
all-of-fabric-3-server. - Extract the archive into that directory, preserving its folder structure and supplied start script.
- Keep a copy of the downloaded archive and write down its release number before making changes.
Install Java 8 and verify the runtime
Debian or Ubuntu
Fabric’s headless guide lists OpenJDK 8 as the required runtime for Minecraft 1.16.5. On Debian- or Ubuntu-based systems, install the runtime and curl with:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install openjdk-8-jre-headless curl
Check which Java executable is active:
java -version
The output should identify Java 8. If the command reports Java 17, Java 21 or another major version, select the Java 8 executable or correct the system’s alternatives before starting the server. A newer Java installation can remain on the machine for other software; the important point is that this server process launches with Java 8.

Other operating systems
Install a supported OpenJDK 8 runtime using your operating system’s package manager or Java distribution, then run java -version from the same account that will start the server. The version check is more useful than relying on a graphical installer’s label because it confirms the executable found on your command path.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsInstall or verify Fabric Loader
A server pack may already include the loader and a working start script. Inspect the extracted directory before downloading anything else. If the supplied script starts the pack, use it; replacing its files can introduce a loader or Minecraft-version mismatch.
Executable server launcher
Fabric’s official method uses an executable server-launcher JAR. The launcher first downloads missing Fabric Loader and Minecraft files, then continues by running the game server. This is the simplest method when you want the selected versions recorded in the launcher rather than assembled manually.
Place the launcher in the server directory and use the pack’s start script, or invoke the launcher directly with the documented pattern:
java -Xmx2G -jar <fabric server launcher jar file name> nogui
The -Xmx2G value in Fabric’s generic example is only a syntax example. For All of Fabric 3, change the maximum heap to the amount you have planned for the pack, commonly -Xmx8G for a small group.

Manual installer method
Fabric also documents a manual server installation. Run the Fabric installer with its server option in the server directory and select Minecraft 1.16.5 with the loader version required by the pack. This method creates fabric-server-launch.jar and expects a Minecraft server.jar in the same directory.
Use the manual route when the pack does not include a ready loader or when you need to reproduce the installation on another machine. Do not mix files from a different Minecraft version: a 1.16.5 pack must be paired with its 1.16.5 server and a compatible Fabric Loader.
Perform the first launch and accept the EULA
- Open a terminal in the server directory.
- Run the supplied start script, or launch the Fabric server launcher with the Java 8 executable. For a small group, a typical heap setting is
-Xmx8G. - Allow the process to run until it stops and creates its initial files. The first boot can take several minutes while mods register and the server builds its data.
- Open the generated
eula.txtfile. - Change
eula=falsetoeula=true, save the file, and close it. - Start the server again with the same script and memory setting.
Do not expose the address to friends during the first boot. Wait for the console to finish generating the world and reach its normal “ready” state. If the process exits, read the first error in the console or log before trying another restart; later stack traces often repeat the original failure.
How much RAM does All of Fabric 3 need?
The pack guidance recommends 8 GB of RAM for a small group. The following planning figures come from FadeHost’s All of Fabric 3 guidance, accessed in 2026. They are vendor recommendations, not an independent benchmark, and the usable result depends on the world, view distance, other applications and the hardware’s CPU and storage.
| Intended use | Published memory guidance | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| One player | 6 GB | A starting allocation for a solo server |
| Two to four friends | 8 GB | The pack’s small-group recommendation |
| Five to ten players | 10 GB | Allow additional headroom as concurrent activity rises |
| Public server | 12 GB | A planning figure for a larger, continuously available server |
These numbers describe the Java heap, not the entire computer’s memory. Leave operating-system headroom for the filesystem cache, the Java process itself and any monitoring or backup tools. If the host has only 8 GB total, assigning all 8 GB to -Xmx can cause swapping or an operating-system out-of-memory condition.

- Fight your way through an all-new action-adventure game, inspired by classic dungeon crawlers and set in the Minecraft universe!
- Play with up to four friends or brave the dungeons alone. Battle new-and-nasty mobs across action-packed, wildly varied levels, in a quest to defeat the evil Arch-Illager!
Increase the heap only when the machine has spare physical memory. An oversized heap does not fix a CPU bottleneck, a slow disk or a mod conflict, and it can make garbage-collection pauses more noticeable.
Configure the network and port 25565
Local firewall
Permit inbound TCP traffic on port 25565 in the host computer’s firewall. Keep the rule limited to the Java server process or the required port rather than disabling the firewall entirely.
Recommended Free Tools
Router port forwarding
- Give the server computer a stable LAN address, either with a DHCP reservation or a static local configuration.
- In the router’s port-forwarding page, create a rule for external TCP port
25565to the server computer’s LAN address and TCP port25565. - Apply the router rule and confirm that the host firewall allows the same port.
- Start the server and wait until the world has finished generating.
- Share the public address only after the server is ready. Players on the same home network can normally use the host’s LAN address; players elsewhere need the router’s public address and the forwarded port.
Do not forward unrelated ports. If the router is behind another router or carrier-grade NAT, an inbound connection may still fail even when the local rule is correct; that is a network-topology problem rather than a Fabric installation problem.
Make every client match the server
Each player must install the same All of Fabric 3 build, including the same Minecraft version, mod set and configuration expectations. A client on a newer pack release can be refused during connection or may appear to be missing content that the server expects.
- Tell players the exact release number, such as 2.8.8 when that is the version selected for the server.
- Have everyone use the pack’s normal client installation for that release.
- Do not add or remove mods casually on one side. A dedicated server should contain the server pack’s files, while client-only visual or input mods belong only on clients when the pack permits them.
- When updating, stop the server, make a backup of the world and configuration, update the server pack and coordinate the client update before anyone reconnects.
Troubleshooting: check these causes in order
Java version error or immediate startup failure
Run java -version from the server directory and confirm that the start script is calling Java 8. If several Java versions are installed, the script may be using a different executable from the one you checked. Correct the script or system alternatives, then retry without changing other files.

The server says files or a loader are missing
Confirm that you downloaded the dedicated server pack, not the client manifest zip. If the pack does not contain a ready loader, use Fabric’s server installation method. The executable launcher can download missing Loader and Minecraft files; the manual method must have both fabric-server-launch.jar and the expected server.jar.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePlayers receive a mod or content mismatch
Compare the server’s release number with the client’s release number. A newer client can be rejected, and copying an unrelated mod into only one installation can create the same symptom. Reinstall the exact pack version on the affected client instead of trying to repair individual jars one at a time.
Crash mentions a client-only mod
Remove client-only mods from the dedicated server directory and restore the files supplied by the server pack. The pack’s vendor troubleshooting list identifies client-only mods as a common cause of dedicated-server failures; treat that as practical vendor guidance rather than a complete diagnostic rule.
Loader or Minecraft-version mismatch
Check that the Fabric Loader and Minecraft server correspond to 1.16.5 and to the pack release. A loader assembled for another pack or Minecraft version can fail before the world loads. Re-extracting a clean server pack into a new directory is often safer than trying to identify every replaced jar in a modified installation.
Out-of-memory shutdowns or severe lag
Confirm the -Xmx value, the computer’s total physical memory and the number of simultaneous players. Compare the allocation with the published 6 GB, 8 GB, 10 GB and 12 GB planning figures, leaving room for the operating system. If the machine cannot provide the required headroom, reduce other workloads or move the server to hardware with more memory.
Use the first error, not the last repeated line
Read the earliest meaningful exception in the console or log and note the file or mod named there. Repeated restarts without changing the underlying Java version, archive, loader, memory or mod set will reproduce the same failure and can make diagnosis harder.
Self-hosting versus a managed Minecraft host
Running the server at home or on your own virtual machine gives you direct control, but you maintain the Java runtime, Fabric files, firewall, router and backups. A managed host can remove much of that administration. One cited hosting provider describes automatic installation of the All of Fabric 3 server pack, Fabric Loader and Java; its page also states that it is not affiliated with the pack authors or Mojang. Treat that page as a vendor description, not an independent speed or reliability test.
| Decision area | Self-hosted server | Managed hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Files and mods | Direct access to every jar, configuration file and world file | Access is provided through the host’s control panel and file tools |
| Setup effort | You create the directory, install Java and Fabric, accept the EULA and configure networking | The provider can install the pack and its required Java and loader components automatically |
| Java and loader maintenance | You verify Java 8 and keep the pack’s loader aligned with 1.16.5 | The provider’s service handles the installation; you still choose compatible pack versions |
| RAM scaling | Limited by the physical or virtual machine you control | Usually changed by selecting a plan with a different allocation |
| Port and firewall administration | You configure TCP 25565, router forwarding and the host firewall | The provider supplies an externally reachable server address, so home-router forwarding is generally unnecessary |
| Backups | You schedule, store and test your own world backups | The provider may supply backup controls, but retention and restore behavior depend on that provider’s plan |
Choose self-hosting when you want complete filesystem control and are comfortable maintaining Java, networking and backups. Choose managed hosting when avoiding those tasks is worth accepting a provider’s control panel, hardware and operational policies.
Quick Recap
Final launch checklist
- All of Fabric 3 server pack, not the client zip, is extracted in its own directory.
- Java reports version 8 for the process that starts the server.
- Fabric Loader and Minecraft are set for the pack’s 1.16.5 release.
- The first launch created
eula.txt; it now containseula=true. - The heap setting matches the group size and leaves operating-system memory available.
- The server reaches its ready state before anyone connects.
- TCP 25565 is allowed by the host firewall and forwarded to the correct LAN address when remote players need access.
- Every client uses the exact same All of Fabric 3 version.
- The world and configuration files are backed up before pack updates or major changes.
