Overdrive was an unofficial storefront-style homebrew app that indexed pirated PS4 and PS5 games for jailbroken PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro consoles. The original GitHub project vanished around October 13–14, 2026, reportedly after a Sony Interactive Entertainment cease-and-desist. Sony and the developer had not publicly confirmed that notice in the reports available at publication time. Forks and independent clones appeared within hours, so deleting one repository did not remove the mirrors and external download links behind it.
What the Overdrive PS5 store actually was
Overdrive was not an authorized PlayStation Store product. It was a homebrew application aimed at consoles modified with a PS5 jailbreak. Its interface copied the look and feel of Sony’s storefront, but game pages showed titles without the normal purchase prices and directed users to third-party file hosts. Overdrive itself generally acted as an index and client rather than as the host for the game files.

TechSpot reported that the project listed more than 1,600 commercial PS4 and PS5 games when it became public. That catalog, and the download destinations behind it, were unofficial and could change without notice. The app was intended for jailbroken hardware, not ordinary retail PS5 systems running Sony-approved software.

How Overdrive became a viral story
The GitHub project was published on October 9, 2026. Its rapid visibility followed promotion by Edigax, a PS5 modder and jailbreak tutorial creator. The size of the audience differs by report: TechSpot counted nearly 10 million views for the promotional post, while Tom’s Hardware reported more than 7.9 million views for the demonstration post. Those figures describe separate reports of social-media reach, not confirmed downloads or users.

The attention also made the project easier to find than most small homebrew repositories. A storefront-like design lowered the technical barrier for browsing a catalog, even though using the software still required a compatible exploit setup and the user’s own risk tolerance.
When the original repository disappeared
The Overdrive repository was no longer available around October 13–14. Reports attributed the removal to a cease-and-desist allegedly sent by Sony Interactive Entertainment, citing an X post by Oliver Darko. TechSpot, Tom’s Hardware and Notebookcheck all treated Sony’s involvement as likely, but none of the cited coverage included a public confirmation from Sony or an on-record statement from the developer. It is therefore more accurate to describe the legal notice as reported or alleged, rather than as a confirmed Sony action.

The disappearance of a GitHub page is not the same as proving that every copy of the software, database or linked file was removed. Anyone assessing the event should separate the documented repository outage from claims about a complete shutdown of the wider distribution network.
Why Overdrive clones returned so quickly
Within hours to roughly one day, new repositories appeared. Reports identified at least one fork of the original project and at least one independently named clone. TechSpot said one replacement had expanded beyond 1,800 listed titles, although catalog size and availability are volatile.

The speed of the response has a straightforward technical explanation:
- A fork can preserve much of the original client-side code and configuration.
- An independent clone can recreate the interface while pointing to the same or similar external databases.
- Because the application indexed third-party links instead of storing every game file in the repository, removing one code host did not automatically remove those mirrors or destinations.
This makes repository removal a short-lived takedown of a particular address, not necessarily a takedown of every copy or link. New repositories can still be unreliable, malicious or legally exposed, and their names, domains and catalogs can change rapidly.

The jailbreak and firmware context
TechSpot reported that Overdrive ran through the Relapse exploit chain, which combined a WebKit browser vulnerability with a kernel flaw to enable homebrew on certain consoles. The same report placed the working range at PS5 and PS5 Pro firmware 7.00 through 13.60 and said firmware 14.00 had closed the relevant security hole.

Those firmware details come from secondary reporting rather than independent testing in the cited articles. They should not be treated as a guarantee that every console in that range can run Overdrive, or that an exploit setup is safe, permanent or reversible. Firmware revisions, console models and jailbreak requirements can materially change the result.

Does this affect a normal PS5 owner?
A standard, unmodified PS5 or PS5 Pro does not automatically gain access to Overdrive because a GitHub repository existed or because clones appeared. The reported application targeted jailbroken systems and depended on a particular exploit environment. Owners who have not modified their consoles should see no change to normal PlayStation Store purchases, installed games or system updates from this incident.
For anyone considering unofficial software, the practical risks are broader than copyright liability. Jailbreaking can expose a console to untrusted code, counterfeit downloads, credential theft, corrupted storage and failed updates. It can also conflict with platform terms and complicate support or recovery. The reports do not establish that every Overdrive replacement is safe, maintained by the original developer or free of tampering; treating a familiar-looking storefront as trustworthy would be unsafe.
