To run a Lost Island server, install the ARK: Survival Evolved dedicated-server files with SteamCMD (app ID 376030), launch the map as LostIsland, configure the two INI files, and expose the server’s game and query traffic through both the host firewall and router. Plan for about 5.5–7 GiB of memory as a starting point; larger tribes, older saves, and mods require more.

What you need before installing

This procedure is for the SteamCMD dedicated server for ARK: Survival Evolved, not an ARK: Survival Ascended server. Steam lists Lost Island as downloadable content that requires the base ARK: Survival Evolved game, so every player must own and install that base game before joining.

Requirement What to prepare
Server operating system A Windows or Linux machine that can remain online while players are using the world.
SteamCMD The current SteamCMD package for your operating system, installed in a directory you can update and back up.
Disk space Room for the server files, downloaded updates, mod content, save files, and backups. Leave headroom rather than filling the disk.
Memory The ARK Official Community Wiki listed Lost Island at 5.5–7 GiB in a 2026 crawl. Treat that as a baseline, not a hard ceiling: player count, save age, structures, and mods increase use.
Network access Administrative access to the host firewall and the router that receives the public internet connection.
Server identity A unique session name, an optional password, and a plan for who will receive administrator credentials.

If your home connection uses carrier-grade NAT, inbound connections may not be possible even with correct firewall rules. In that case, use a host with a publicly reachable address or a managed service that supplies the network exposure.

Choose self-hosting or managed hosting

Self-hosting gives you direct control over files and settings, but you are responsible for uptime, patching, backups, and protecting the network. Managed hosting trades some low-level control for an always-on machine and a control panel. Compare offers using the same requirements rather than a headline slot count.

  • Capture and Tame Dinosaurs: Discover over 100 different dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures on the island, finding ways to tame them into useful additions for your tribe's dino herd
  • Survive Above All: Hunger, thirst, basic safety, and protecting yourself from the weather are all part of the game
  • Harvest, Hunt and Build: Cut down trees and turn them into a basic home, which you can quickly expand into a Jurassic estate. Hunt for meat, scavenge for plants (or start your own garden!)
  • Customize Everything: An extensive crafting system invites you to mix and match materials scavenged from the island, while also modifying the colors, textures, shapes, and styles
  • Explore the Island: Solve the mystery of The ARK as you explore this massive island, discovering Explorer's Notebooks (filled with clues!) throughout
Decision axis Self-hosted machine Managed server
Monthly cost Usually an existing-machine, electricity, and internet cost; the total depends on your hardware and connection. A recurring fee set by the provider and selected resources; verify current terms before subscribing.
CPU and RAM allocation You choose the hardware, but other programs can compete for resources. The plan defines the allocation; confirm whether resources are dedicated or shared.
Player slots Limited by CPU, memory, upload capacity, and the configuration you select. Often sold in slot tiers; check whether the advertised number is a limit or merely a recommendation.
Mods You control installation and update timing, subject to Steam Workshop compatibility. Check how mods are selected, updated, and recovered when a mod update breaks a save.
Backups and restore You must schedule, store, and test your own copies. Look for retention, off-machine storage, downloadable archives, and one-click restore controls.
Location and latency Players connect to your home or colocated machine; geography is fixed by its location. You can usually select a region. Test latency from the locations where your players live.
DDoS protection Protection is generally whatever your internet provider and router supply. Ask what mitigation is included and whether it covers the assigned address and game traffic.
INI access Full access to GameUserSettings.ini, Game.ini, launch arguments, and logs. Confirm that the panel permits the exact files and keys your configuration requires.

Whichever route you choose, the map name, server build, configuration syntax, and mod versions still have to match the clients that connect.

Install SteamCMD and the ARK server files

1. Create a dedicated installation directory

Choose a path with a short, stable name and enough free space. On Windows, an example is C:ARKServer; on Linux, an example is /srv/ark. Avoid putting the live save directory inside a location that is automatically synchronized or cleaned by another application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run the service under a separate local account where practical. That limits the damage if a game process or an administrative script is compromised and makes file ownership easier to audit.

2. Start SteamCMD

Open a terminal or command prompt in the SteamCMD directory. The official installation sequence is:

force_install_dir <install_dir>
login anonymous
app_update 376030 validate
exit

Replace <install_dir> with the absolute path you selected. The app_update command downloads or validates the ARK dedicated-server app. SteamCMD may take a while on the first run because it must obtain the complete depot and verify files.

  • Approximately 5.1 x 5.1 in (13 x 13 cm) - small enough to sit on a desk or monitor stand
  • Soft filled construction that keeps its shape on a shelf
  • Works as the punchline alongside the rest of an ARK plush collection
  • A gag gift for ARK players and survival game fans

3. Update before every planned restart

Run SteamCMD again when you need to patch or validate the server. Do not update while players are writing to the world: stop the server cleanly, copy the save, update, then start it again. A client and server on incompatible builds can refuse connections or behave unpredictably. Apply the same compatibility rule to mods; update clients and server content together when a game patch requires it.

Launch the Lost Island world

Use the exact level identifier

The ARK: Survival Evolved level name is case-sensitive in examples: LostIsland. A minimal launch command is:

ShooterGameServer LostIsland?SessionName=<name>

Replace <name> with the name players should see. Keep the command in a start script so you can review and reproduce it after an update. On Linux, make the script executable and run it from the server’s ShooterGame/Binaries/Linux directory; on Windows, run the corresponding executable from the server’s binaries directory.

Add only the query parameters you need

ARK reads many options from the launch query string. Add documented parameters for requirements such as a server password, player-location display, or third-person view. Keep each option in the same query string, separated according to ARK’s syntax, and remove experimental options when troubleshooting so you know which change affected startup.

Do not put long gameplay override lists into the launch command when an INI key is the appropriate place. A short, version-controlled start script is easier to audit than an unstructured command line.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Configure the two INI files

After the first successful start, stop the server and inspect the Saved/Config directory beneath the server installation. The exact path differs by operating system, but the two files you need are GameUserSettings.ini and Game.ini.

GameUserSettings.ini: player-facing and server preferences

Put settings that describe how players access or experience the server here, following ARK’s exact key names and syntax. Examples include server-list presentation, password-related options, and other user-facing preferences documented for the game version you run.

Game.ini: gameplay and spawn overrides

Use Game.ini for gameplay rules, item or creature balance changes, and spawn overrides. These entries are sensitive to spelling, section headers, capitalization, and punctuation. Copy the documented form exactly; an almost-correct key is usually ignored without a helpful error.

Safe editing workflow

  1. Stop the server and wait for the process to exit before editing.
  2. Copy both INI files and the current save directory to a dated backup location.
  3. Change one logical group of settings at a time, preserving section headers and line endings.
  4. Start the server and read the startup log for parse errors or rejected values.
  5. Join with a test character before applying the change to an established community.
  6. If startup fails or settings do not apply, restore the last known-good file rather than piling on more edits.

Keep a plain-text change log with the date, the key changed, and the reason. This turns a difficult rollback into a one-file restore.

Open the network path

Allow traffic on the host firewall

Create inbound rules for the ARK game and query traffic on the operating-system firewall. Permit only the protocol and ports used by your launch configuration, and apply the rule to the correct network profile. A rule for the wrong executable, profile, or protocol can look correct while still blocking players.

  • Official ARK: Survival Evolved licensed merchandise, featuring the Dodo sculpted in textured iron
  • Compact pin measuring about 1.6 in (4 cm) across and 0.5 in (1.2 cm) thick - light enough for caps, denim and tote bags
  • Raised, textured surface gives the design real depth instead of a flat printed look
  • Made in Japan - the pin back attaches securely and sits flat without dragging the fabric down
  • A gift for ARK players, survival game fans, and dinosaur enthusiasts

Forward the same ports on the router

In the router, forward the server’s configured game and query ports to the machine’s private IP address. Reserve that private address with a DHCP reservation or a static configuration so the forwarding target does not change after a reboot. The router’s external port, internal port, protocol, and destination address must agree with the server and firewall settings.

The setup references establish that game and query traffic must be permitted and forwarded, but they do not specify a universal port number. Use the values in your current launch configuration and platform documentation instead of copying a number from an unrelated guide. If you change a port, update the firewall rule, router forward, start script, and any bookmark or server-list entry together.

Keep remote administration separate

If you enable RCON, treat its port as a separate protected rule. Restrict its source addresses to trusted administrators or place it behind a VPN; never expose an administrative interface broadly just because the game port is public. Use a strong, unique password and remove access for former administrators.

Start, discover, and test the server

  1. Start the server with the saved launch script and wait for the world to finish loading.
  2. Confirm that the process creates or updates the Saved and Saved/Config files without permission or disk-full errors.
  3. From the same machine, verify that the process is listening on the configured game and query endpoints.
  4. Search the in-game unofficial server list or Steam server browser for the session name.
  5. Have a second client connect from outside the host’s LAN. A test from the server’s own network can succeed even when the router blocks internet clients.
  6. Create a temporary test character, move briefly, disconnect, and reconnect to confirm that the save persists.
  7. Only after that test, publish the address and password to your players.

If the server is not listed, try a direct connection using the public address and configured game port. A missing listing does not by itself prove that the server is offline; query traffic, NAT behavior, and filtering can affect discovery independently of the game connection.

Memory, performance, and capacity planning

The published Lost Island estimate of 5.5–7 GiB is a starting range for the server process. It is not a player-slot guarantee. A busy world with many structures, long-running saves, and mods can exceed it, and the operating system needs memory of its own.

  • A gift for ARK players, survival game fans, and dinosaur enthusiasts
  • Leave capacity for the operating system, SteamCMD updates, log files, and backup archives.
  • Watch memory over several play sessions rather than judging from the first fresh boot.
  • Record usage during peak simultaneous players and after a save has accumulated weeks of structures and creatures.
  • Use a faster CPU and storage when startup, saves, or heavy mod activity become the bottleneck; adding memory alone does not fix CPU saturation.
  • Reduce unnecessary background services on a self-hosted machine and avoid running a desktop workload beside the server.

When a machine begins swapping, players may see delayed saves, rubber-banding, or disconnections. Stop adding mods or slots until you have measured the limiting resource.

Backups, updates, and routine administration

Back up the files that matter

Schedule backups of the world save, both INI files, the launch script, and any mod or administrative configuration. Keep at least one copy on a different disk or machine. A backup that remains on the same failed drive is not a recovery plan.

Test restoration on a separate directory. Verify that the restored world opens and that the configuration matches the intended build before replacing the live copy.

Use a controlled maintenance window

  1. Announce a save and shutdown time to players.
  2. Stop the server cleanly and confirm the process has exited.
  3. Create a dated backup.
  4. Run SteamCMD with app_update 376030 validate.
  5. Update or remove incompatible mods as required by the new build.
  6. Start the server, watch the log, and perform an external connection test.

Keep the previous server files and backup until the new build has been stable for a meaningful session. Immediate deletion removes your easiest rollback path.

Troubleshooting by symptom

Symptom Likely checks Recovery
SteamCMD reports an incomplete or corrupt install Check disk space, permissions, and whether another SteamCMD process is using the directory. Stop competing processes and rerun app_update 376030 validate.
Server starts but loads another map Inspect the executable argument and confirm the level token is exactly LostIsland, with no stale start script being launched. Correct the script, stop the process, and start again.
Players on the LAN can join, internet players cannot Check the host firewall, router forward, private IP reservation, public address, and carrier-grade NAT. Fix the network path and retest from a genuinely external connection.
Server is reachable but absent from the list Verify query traffic, session name, and server startup completion. Use a direct connection while correcting discovery-related settings.
Clients report an incompatible version Compare the server build, client build, and every installed mod version. Update the server and clients in the same maintenance window or roll back to the backed-up build.
INI changes have no effect Check the file path, section header, key spelling, syntax, and whether the server was stopped before editing. Restore a known-good copy, apply one documented change, and restart.
World loads slowly or the process runs out of memory Measure peak memory, save age, player count, structures, and mod load. Reduce load or move to a machine with more available memory and CPU headroom.
RCON is exposed unintentionally Review router and firewall rules separately from game traffic. Remove broad rules, restrict sources, rotate credentials, and re-enable only through a protected path.

Launch checklist

  • SteamCMD is installed and the dedicated-server directory is writable.
  • app_update 376030 validate completes without errors.
  • The start script uses the Lost Island level identifier and a clear session name.
  • GameUserSettings.ini and Game.ini are backed up before edits.
  • The host firewall permits the configured game and query traffic.
  • The router forwards those same ports to a stable private IP.
  • RCON, if enabled, is restricted separately from public game access.
  • A client outside the LAN can connect, save, disconnect, and reconnect.
  • Backups and a repeatable update procedure are scheduled.

Once these checks pass, the server is ready for regular play. Keep the launch script, INI files, backups, and maintenance notes together so a future patch or hardware move does not require rebuilding the setup from memory.
