If Apache still shows its default page, it usually is not ignoring your configuration. Apache selected a virtual host for the request’s destination IP address and port, then failed to find a matching ServerName or ServerAlias. When that happens, it serves the first virtual host listed for that address and port. Fix the hostname, DNS or hosts mapping, port, and loaded configuration in that order; do not start by rearranging files.

What Apache is choosing when you see the default page
Apache name-based virtual hosting makes several sites share one server address. For each request, Apache first determines the local IP address and port that accepted the connection. It then compares the hostname from the request’s Host header with the ServerName and ServerAlias values in virtual hosts attached to that address and port.

For example, a request for http://example.com/ normally arrives at port 80. Apache looks among the *:80 virtual hosts, checks whether example.com matches a name, and serves that host’s DocumentRoot. If no name matches, the first listed host for that address and port becomes the fallback. The default page is therefore evidence of a routing mismatch, not proof that the files in your intended site are missing.
The smallest useful virtual-host block
<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerName example.com
ServerAlias www.example.com
DocumentRoot /var/www/example
</VirtualHost>
ServerName and DocumentRoot are the minimum meaningful directives for a name-based block. Add ServerAlias for additional hostnames that should reach the same site. Replace the example name and path with your own values. A block does not create DNS records, create the directory, or make Apache load the file by itself; those are separate steps.

Why the default page appears
| Symptom or condition | What Apache sees | Corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| You browse to an IP address | The request hostname is an address such as 203.0.113.10, not example.com |
Use the configured hostname, or add a matching ServerName for deliberate IP-based access |
| The public DNS record points elsewhere | Your browser connects to another server, so this Apache instance never receives the request | Correct the DNS record and wait for the applicable DNS caching period |
| A hosts entry was added on the wrong computer | Only the machine containing the entry resolves the test name to your server | Add the mapping to the client that makes the request, or use DNS for shared access |
| The block uses the wrong port or address | The request is filtered out before name matching because *:80 and *:443 are different candidates |
Make the virtual-host address and port match the URL being tested |
| The file was not loaded | Apache’s parsed configuration contains no block for the intended name | Enable or include the file using your distribution’s configuration mechanism, validate, then reload |
| Names are duplicated | More than one block claims the same ServerName or alias; only the first listed definition is effective |
Give each name one owner and remove stale or duplicate aliases |
ServerName is omitted |
Apache may inherit or derive a hostname, producing surprising matching behavior | Set an explicit ServerName in every name-based virtual host |
Build a known-good HTTP virtual host
1. Choose the exact names and content directory
Decide which hostname the reader will type and whether the www form should serve the same content. Put the canonical name in ServerName and every accepted alternate in ServerAlias. Confirm that the intended DocumentRoot exists and contains a distinguishable test file, such as an index page that identifies the site. A unique marker helps you tell the intended host from Apache’s stock page.
Apache must be able to read the directory and the files beneath it. If the directory exists but the response is an error, inspect the error log before changing virtual-host order; the log will usually identify a missing path or an access problem.

<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerName example.com
ServerAlias www.example.com
DocumentRoot /var/www/example
</VirtualHost>
The asterisk means the host listens on any local address associated with port 80. If your server is intentionally bound to one address, use that address consistently instead. Do not put an HTTP request in a block for another port and expect Apache to match it.
3. Load the file through your distribution’s mechanism
Different operating systems organize Apache configuration differently. Some distributions include files from a directory automatically; others provide helper commands that create the include link. Use the mechanism documented for your distribution, then verify that the resulting parsed configuration contains your block. A Debian or Ubuntu system may use its distribution-specific site helper, but commands such as a2ensite are not universal Apache commands and should not be copied blindly to another platform.
4. Validate syntax before reloading
Run Apache’s configuration syntax check using the command supplied by your installation, commonly the Apache control utility’s config-test operation. A failed syntax check must be fixed before a reload. Typical causes include an unclosed <VirtualHost> element, a misspelled directive, a path typo, or a file that was never included.

apachectl configtest
Proceed only when the check reports a successful configuration. Then reload Apache with the service manager or control command used by your operating system. A reload applies the new map without requiring you to stop the server; if your platform reports a reload failure, return to the syntax output and error log rather than testing an assumed configuration.

Make the hostname resolve to this server
Public DNS
For a public site, the DNS record for example.com must resolve to the server’s address. The same is true for www.example.com if it is listed as a ServerAlias. Creating a virtual-host file does not change DNS. Check the answer from a resolver and compare it with the address on which Apache is listening. If the answer is another address, requests will continue to show that other server’s page regardless of how correct your local Apache file is.
A hosts file for local testing
A hosts entry is useful before public DNS is ready. Add the server address followed by the names, for example:
203.0.113.10 example.com www.example.com
This mapping affects only the machine where you save it. A browser on another laptop, a phone, a monitoring service, or a remote HTTP client will still use its own DNS configuration. Remove the temporary entry when it is no longer needed, and ensure you edit the hosts file on the actual client making the request, not merely on the Apache server.
Test the request Apache must match
Use the hostname, not just the server address
Open the complete URL with the configured name, such as http://example.com/. Testing http://203.0.113.10/ sends a different hostname and is expected to select a fallback when no virtual host claims that address as a name. Test the bare and www names separately if both are configured; a typo, an unlisted subdomain, or an unexpected trailing hostname can expose the fallback even while the canonical name works.

Keep the port consistent
Port is part of virtual-host selection. A request to http://example.com/ targets port 80, so it can match a *:80 block. A request to https://example.com/ normally targets port 443 and cannot match only that HTTP block. Include a corresponding HTTPS block after TLS is configured:
<VirtualHost *:443>
ServerName example.com
ServerAlias www.example.com
DocumentRoot /var/www/example
# Add the certificate and TLS directives required by your platform.
</VirtualHost>
The HTTPS block needs the certificate and other TLS directives required by your platform. A working port-80 site does not automatically make port 443 work, and a certificate configuration does not repair a DNS record pointing to another machine.
Use an HTTP client when the browser is ambiguous
A browser may cache redirects or retain an old connection. An HTTP client lets you state the hostname and port explicitly and inspect the response status. Test the exact URL you intend to publish, then test the alternate name. If the client reaches an address different from the server, correct name resolution first; if it reaches this server but returns the stock page, inspect Apache’s parsed hosts and file order.
Read Apache’s parsed view with apachectl -S
The most useful diagnostic is Apache’s virtual-host dump:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →apachectl -S
On Windows, use:
httpd.exe -S
This output shows the addresses and ports Apache parsed, the server names attached to them, the configuration file and line where each definition came from, and the default virtual host selected for each address and port. Read it as Apache’s active map, not as a list of files you think should be active.

What to look for in the output
- Your block is absent: the file was not included or the syntax prevented it from loading. Fix the include or syntax error, validate again, and reload.
- Your block is under
*:80but you test HTTPS: create and load the required*:443block, including its TLS settings. - The address differs from the one receiving the request: change the binding or the request destination so both use the same IP and port.
- A different host is listed first: that host is the fallback for unmatched names. Reordering can change the fallback, but it cannot make an incorrect hostname match.
- The same name appears more than once: remove the duplicate or decide which one should own the name. Apache uses the first listed definition for the duplicate.
- An unexpected derived or inherited name appears: add an explicit
ServerNameto the affected block.
Use the error log when the map looks right
If apachectl -S shows the expected name, address, port, and document root but the response is still wrong, read the Apache error log first. It can distinguish a request that never reached the intended host from a host that matched but could not read its content. Look for the time of your test and the requested path. A missing directory, unreadable file, failed rewrite, or TLS problem generally leaves a more precise message than the browser’s generic error page.
Check the access log as well when available. The recorded request line and status help confirm which URL was actually sent. Be careful with browser redirects: an HTTP request can redirect to HTTPS, after which the second request follows the 443 path and may select a different virtual host.
Choose the right hosting and name-resolution model
| Decision | Name-based hosting | IP-based hosting |
|---|---|---|
| How sites are separated | Several names share an IP; Apache compares the request hostname | Each site uses a separate IP address; the address selects the site before name matching |
| Typical setup | Multiple <VirtualHost *:port> blocks with distinct names |
Blocks bound to different local IP addresses |
| Main failure mode | Wrong hostname, duplicate alias, or unmatched name falls to the first host | DNS or request reaches the wrong address |
| Operational trade-off | Generally simpler when many names share one address | Requires an additional address for each separated site |
Name-based hosting is normally the simpler choice when the sites can share an address. IP-based hosting is appropriate when you deliberately assign different addresses and configure Apache to listen on them. Do not diagnose an IP-based design with assumptions from a name-based one: the address is a selection criterion in both cases, but the number of available candidate blocks differs.

A repeatable troubleshooting sequence
- Write down the exact URL. Record the hostname, scheme, and port. Do not substitute the server IP while diagnosing a name-based host.
- Confirm the intended names. Compare the URL with every
ServerNameandServerAlias, including spelling and subdomain. - Confirm resolution. Use a DNS resolver for public names or inspect the hosts file on the client making the request. Verify that the result is the Apache server’s address.
- Confirm the candidate port and address. HTTP normally uses 80 and HTTPS normally uses 443. Ensure the corresponding
<VirtualHost>block exists. - Confirm the content path. Check that
DocumentRootexists, contains the expected test file, and is readable by Apache. - Validate syntax. Run the installation’s Apache config test and correct every reported error before reloading.
- Reload the active service. Use your operating system’s Apache service mechanism, then test again with the exact hostname.
- Dump the parsed map. Run
apachectl -S(orhttpd.exe -Son Windows) and inspect loaded files, names, ports, duplicates, and the default host. - Read logs. If the map is correct, use the error and access logs at the time of the request to find path, permission, redirect, or TLS failures.
- Retest both names and schemes. Test the canonical name, each alias, HTTP, and HTTPS separately. Record which combination fails instead of changing several variables at once.
Common fixes that do not solve the underlying problem
Reordering files without checking the request name
Changing file order only changes which host answers unmatched requests. It may make the default page look different while leaving the intended hostname unconfigured. First verify the Host name, destination address, and port; use ordering deliberately only after those match and you want to choose a fallback.
Adding a DNS record to Apache’s configuration
Apache directives cannot publish a DNS record. DNS is maintained by the authoritative DNS service for the domain, while a hosts file is local to one client. Treat name resolution as a separate dependency and test it independently.

Editing a file but never loading it
A correctly written file has no effect if Apache does not include it. apachectl -S exposes this immediately: if the file and its ServerName are absent, stop testing the page and fix the distribution-specific enable/include step.
Adding only an HTTP block for an HTTPS URL
Port 443 has its own candidate set. Add the HTTPS block and certificate configuration required by the platform, then validate and reload. Test the HTTPS name directly rather than assuming a successful HTTP test proves TLS routing.
Leaving names implicit
When ServerName is omitted, Apache may inherit or derive a value from the server hostname. That can produce counter-intuitive matching and makes the configuration harder to audit. Set an explicit ServerName in every name-based block, even when an alias appears to make the intention obvious.
Production checklist
- Each hostname has one intentional
ServerNameowner. - Every alternate hostname is listed once as a
ServerAlias, or redirected intentionally by its own block. - The public DNS answers point to the address where Apache listens.
- Local hosts entries, if used, are installed on every test client that needs them.
- The HTTP block is attached to port 80 and the HTTPS block to port 443 when both schemes are offered.
- The document directory exists and Apache can read the required files.
- The configuration passes a syntax check before each reload.
apachectl -Sshows the expected names, addresses, ports, source files, and fallback hosts.- The error log is clean for a real request, and access-log entries show the hostname and status you expect.
- Tests use the hostname, not merely the server IP, and cover both the bare and
wwwforms when applicable.
What a successful result looks like
When the setup is correct, a request for http://example.com/ resolves to this server, reaches the *:80 candidate set, matches ServerName example.com, and serves files from /var/www/example. A request for http://www.example.com/ follows the same path through ServerAlias. An HTTPS request repeats the process against the *:443 block and its certificate settings. An unconfigured name or an IP-only request may still show the first listed virtual host by design; that is the fallback behavior you can confirm in the server dump.
