For a first story run, use Normal difficulty. It preserves The Forest’s combat and survival systems without the extra pressure of Hard modes. Choose Peaceful when you mainly want to explore or build, Hard after you understand food, water, shelter, and combat, and Hard Survival only for a deliberately punishing run. In co-op, the host selects these settings before inviting anyone.
Start graphics at your display’s native resolution in fullscreen. If your computer cannot hold a higher frame rate, cap the game at 60 FPS. Keep TAA only if its image improvement is worth the performance cost; when frames are unstable, reduce shadows, far shadows, draw distance, grass distance, and grass density before lowering texture quality. A dedicated server needs an explicit difficulty, startup mode, save slot, autosave interval, and logging policy.

Choose the right difficulty before you create the world
Difficulty is selected during world creation and is not normally changeable afterward. The usual exceptions require mods or commands, so treat the first choice as a rule for that save rather than a temporary menu setting. The four documented modes occupy a clear progression from low threat to the most demanding survival experience.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Difficulty | Enemy pressure | Survival pressure | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Peaceful | No normal main-enemy pressure | Useful for learning construction and exploration without the usual threat | Base building, sightseeing, and players who do not want the standard enemy experience |
| Normal | The standard combat and threat experience | Balanced food, water, shelter, and resource demands | First solo or co-op story run |
| Hard | More demanding than Normal | Extra survival pressure once the core systems are familiar | Experienced players who understand combat and resource management |
| Hard Survival | The highest-pressure end of the documented scale | Strongest documented survival modifiers | Veteran players seeking a deliberately punishing run |
Normal: the dependable first choice
Normal is the best default when you are learning how The Forest fits exploration, shelter, food, water, crafting, and combat together. You still encounter the systems that make the story meaningful, but you are not committing the save to the extra pressure of Hard or Hard Survival before you know how those systems interact.

Peaceful: building and exploration without the main threat
Peaceful is intended for players who want to concentrate on construction, map exploration, or learning the environment without the normal enemy pressure. It is a useful teaching world and a comfortable cooperative building mode. Select it when removing the main threat is the point of the session, not merely because Normal feels unfamiliar.
Hard: a step up after you know the loop
Hard fits players who have already learned how to secure food and water, establish shelter, and handle combat. The additional survival pressure is easier to appreciate once basic routines are automatic. Starting a new world on Hard is sensible for an experienced player; switching an existing save is not a normal in-game option.
Hard Survival: reserve it for a specific challenge
Hard Survival is the most punishing documented choice and includes the strongest documented survival modifiers. Use it when the extra difficulty is the purpose of the run. It is a poor “test” setting for a first story because an early misunderstanding about supplies or shelter can define the entire experience.
Set optional world rules before starting
Difficulty is not the only decision made at world creation. Two optional rules materially change how a long-running base feels: tree regrowth and building destruction.

Tree regrowth
Decide whether cut trees should regrow before you begin. Turning regrowth on makes a permanent home easier to maintain around a harvested forest and reduces the need to move production farther from the base. Turning it off creates a more permanent environmental footprint: clearing an area remains part of that save’s character. Neither choice is universally better; choose based on whether the group values renewable local building material or a lasting consequence for overharvesting.
Building destruction
Building destruction determines whether damage to structures is part of the world’s risk. If you want accidental impacts and combat mistakes to matter, leave the rule active. If the group is constructing a showcase base and does not want incidental damage to erase work, choose the more forgiving option at creation. Discuss this with co-op players first, because the rule affects everyone in the world.
Singleplayer setup: a reliable sequence
- Start a new game. Difficulty is chosen when the world is created, not as a normal mid-save preference.
- Select the difficulty. Use Normal for a first story, Peaceful for exploration and construction, Hard for a practiced player, or Hard Survival for a deliberately severe run.
- Choose tree regrowth. Turn it on if the base will consume large quantities of local timber; turn it off if you want clearing to remain permanent.
- Choose building destruction. Decide whether structural damage should be a meaningful risk in the save.
- Create the world and keep the choice in mind. The game does not normally provide a later difficulty switch. Mods or commands may offer alternatives, but those are outside the standard settings flow and can change how the save behaves.
For a first solo story, the least-regret combination is Normal with tree regrowth enabled. It leaves the core threat and survival loop intact while making a long-term base less dependent on relocating for wood. Peaceful with either tree setting is appropriate when the objective is building rather than surviving the normal enemy game.

Multiplayer: the host’s settings govern the session
The host should choose difficulty and optional world rules before inviting the group. Host-enabled optional modes take effect in multiplayer, so joining players should agree to the host’s choices rather than expect each client to override them. This is especially important for difficulty: the session is not a collection of individually selected rules.

Practical co-op combinations
| Group goal | Recommended setup | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| First shared story | Normal with tree regrowth on | Preserves combat and survival while keeping local building resources renewable |
| Cooperative construction session | Peaceful | Removes normal enemy pressure so the group can focus on building and exploration |
| Experienced team challenge | Hard | Adds survival pressure after everyone understands food, water, shelter, and combat |
| Purpose-built extreme run | Hard Survival | Uses the strongest documented survival modifiers for a group that explicitly wants them |
Agree on destruction before anyone builds
Building destruction is a shared-world rule. A player who expects a protected construction sandbox and a host who expects structural damage to matter are choosing different games. Set the option before the first foundation is placed, and tell new players which rule applies before they join the save.
What joining players can and cannot change
Clients can adjust their own local display and control preferences, but they should not assume they can replace the host’s difficulty or world-rule decisions. If the group wants a different difficulty, the host should create or load a world with that choice rather than asking each player to change a local option.
Graphics settings: improve frame rate in the right order
The options menu contains the main resolution, antialiasing, shadow, distance, terrain, texture, and grass controls. There is no universal “best preset” or published benchmark that applies to every computer, so tune from a known baseline instead of copying a fixed number from another system.

- Use native display resolution. This keeps the image at the panel’s intended sharpness and gives you a consistent reference for later changes.
- Use fullscreen. Begin there before diagnosing performance so the game is not being compared across different window modes.
- Set a 60-FPS cap when necessary. If the system cannot sustain a higher rate, a 60-FPS limit avoids chasing an unstable target. Do not treat 60 as a published performance guarantee; it is a practical cap for systems that cannot hold more consistently.
- Evaluate TAA. TAA can improve the image, but it has a performance cost. Keep it when the visual cleanup is worth that cost on your machine; disable or reduce the associated quality when frame delivery is unstable.
Lower these settings first when frames dip
| Setting | First action | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Shadows | Reduce before touching textures | Less detailed or shorter-range shadowing |
| Far shadows | Reduce if distant scenes cause drops | Remote terrain and objects cast less detailed shadows |
| Draw distance | Lower when looking across large areas is expensive | Distant objects appear later or with less detail |
| Grass distance | Lower when vegetation-heavy views are the problem | Grass fades sooner as you look into the distance |
| Grass density | Lower for a broad vegetation-related performance gain | Ground cover becomes sparser |
| Texture quality | Adjust after the settings above | Surface detail is reduced; this is not the first lever for most frame-rate drops |
This order preserves texture clarity while targeting the options that affect shadows, scene visibility, and large amounts of vegetation. Change one setting at a time, revisit the same location, and stop when frame delivery is stable enough for your display. Because hardware, resolution, and scene complexity vary, the result is a tuning method rather than a guaranteed FPS number.

When resolution is the real bottleneck
If reducing shadows, distances, and grass does not stabilize performance, lower the render resolution one step and reassess. Resolution changes affect the whole image, so use them after the more targeted adjustments when you prefer to retain texture detail. Return to native resolution if the softer image is more distracting than the original frame-rate problem.
Dedicated-server configuration
The dedicated-server documentation exposes the following settings. Enter the values deliberately; a server that starts with the wrong initialization mode can load the wrong world or fail to continue the existing one.
| Setting | Allowed or documented value | Purpose and caution |
|---|---|---|
difficulty |
Peaceful, Normal, Hard, or HardSurvival |
Sets the server’s gameplay difficulty. Use the exact documented spelling, including the no-space HardSurvival value. |
initType |
New or Continue |
New creates a world; Continue loads an existing save. Leaving the server on New prevents normal continuation of the established world. |
slot |
A selected save slot | Choose the slot explicitly so the server opens the intended world. |
serverAutoSaveInterval |
30 minutes is listed as the default; 15 minutes is the documented minimum | Sets how often the server autosaves. A shorter interval protects more recent progress but increases save activity. |
showLogs |
Enabled while diagnosing | Keeps event logging visible during startup and connection troubleshooting. |
serverPlayers |
Maximum 8 players | The linked Steam Community dedicated-server guide (2017) documents the eight-player maximum. |
Dedicated-server checklist
- Select the difficulty. Match the server value to the experience the group agreed on. The dedicated-server values are
Peaceful,Normal,Hard, andHardSurvival. - Choose the initialization mode. Use
Newonly when you intentionally want a new world. UseContinuefor the established save; otherwise a restart can leave the server trying to create rather than continue. - Select the save slot. Do not rely on an implicit slot when several worlds exist.
- Set autosave frequency. The documented default is 30 minutes and the minimum is 15 minutes. Choose within that range according to how much recent progress the group is willing to replay after an interruption.
- Keep
showLogsenabled during diagnosis. Read the startup and connection events before changing multiple settings at once. Disable or reduce logging only after the problem is understood and normal operation is confirmed. - Plan for no more than eight players. The 2017 Steam guide’s documented maximum is eight; schedule the session around that limit rather than assuming a larger lobby will work.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The difficulty is wrong after the world starts
That is usually a creation-time decision, not a menu error. Difficulty is not normally changeable after the save is created. If the group selected the wrong mode, the standard remedy is to create the intended world; mods or commands are non-standard alternatives and can alter the save’s behavior.
The server keeps starting a fresh world
Check initType first. A server left on New will not normally continue the existing save. Set it to Continue, verify the intended slot, and then restart using the established world.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Players cannot join a larger group
Check the planned population against the documented maximum of eight players from the 2017 Steam Community dedicated-server guide. If the group exceeds eight, the limitation is capacity rather than a graphics or difficulty setting.
Frame rate is unstable but textures look fine
Reduce shadows, far shadows, draw distance, grass distance, and grass density in that order before lowering texture quality. Then reassess TAA and, only if necessary, resolution. This targets the settings identified for practical performance tuning without sacrificing surface detail first.
A base is being damaged when the group expected a building sandbox
Review the building-destruction choice made when the world was created. It is an optional world rule controlled by the host in multiplayer, so local client changes do not replace the host’s decision.

- New to The Forest: Normal, tree regrowth on, and the graphics baseline of native resolution, fullscreen, and a 60-FPS cap if needed.
- Primarily building: Peaceful, with tree regrowth selected according to how much renewable timber you want around the base.
