How to Set Up Automatic Restarts With Warnings on a Project Zomboid Server

By VGSources Team 14 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The reliable pattern is a staged shutdown: a scheduler sends timed servermsg warnings through RCON, sends save, then quit, and finally lets the normal launcher, container restart policy, or hosting panel start the server again. Enable and password-protect RCON first, keep its port private, choose and document a timezone, and test the complete cycle on a non-production server before trusting it with players.

The restart sequence you are automating

An automatic restart is not one command. It is an orchestration workflow with four phases:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Warn. Broadcast increasingly urgent messages so players can stop looting, reach a safe place, and exit.
  2. Save. Send the Project Zomboid save administration command through RCON or the server console.
  3. Quit cleanly. Send quit and wait for the process to end. This allows the world to flush to disk.
  4. Start again. A Windows launcher, Docker restart policy, panel task, or managed host starts the normal boot process.

A practical countdown is:

Time before restart Command Player-facing purpose
10 minutes servermsg "Server restart in 10 minutes. Please find a safe place." Stop risky activities and secure characters.
5 minutes servermsg "Server restart in 5 minutes. Finish looting and exit safely." Finish short actions and log out.
1 minute servermsg "Server restart in 1 minute." Final warning.
10 seconds servermsg "Restarting now; saving world." Explain the brief loss of access.
At the deadline save, then quit Flush the world and end the process normally.

You can change the intervals, but publish the exact cadence to players. A warning that says “soon” is less useful than a stated five-minute deadline.

Requirements and safety checks

  • RCON access: RCON must be enabled, assigned a strong password, and reachable by the scheduler.
  • Private networking: Bind or firewall the RCON port to localhost or a private network whenever possible. Do not expose an administrative port to the public internet without a specific reason and compensating controls.
  • A restart owner: Decide whether Windows Task Scheduler, a Docker policy, a cron-style panel, or a managed host will perform the final start.
  • Backups: Keep periodic world backups outside the live save directory and verify that at least one backup can be restored.
  • Non-overlap: Ensure only one restart task can run at a time. Two countdowns can issue competing save/quit commands.
  • Timezone: Write the timezone in the task name and runbook. Containers commonly use UTC, while a self-hosted machine may use local time.
  • Observability: Record scheduler exit codes, RCON responses, process exit status, and the next successful boot.

The exact RCON client syntax varies. Keep the message text and command order fixed, but adapt quoting and connection flags to the client you actually use. Never place the RCON password in a script readable by ordinary users or in a public repository.

Configure RCON before scheduling anything

Project Zomboid administration tools commonly expose configuration keys named RCONPort and RCONPassword. Set a dedicated, high-entropy password, restart the server once so the settings take effect, and confirm that an authenticated client can run a harmless command such as a test servermsg.

  1. Choose the listener address and port. Prefer localhost for a scheduler on the same machine, or a private address when the scheduler is separate.
  2. Set RCONPassword and protect the configuration file with operating-system permissions.
  3. Allow the port through the firewall only for the scheduler’s address.
  4. Run a test message and verify that connected players see it.
  5. Run save manually during a maintenance window, then confirm that the server remains healthy. Do not test quit on a live session until you have a restart plan.

The pz-server-tools documentation lists restart and quit administration commands, but a clean, auditable workflow still sends save explicitly before quit. Treat any tool’s emergency kill action as a last-resort recovery measure, not as a scheduled restart.

Windows self-hosted server: notifier plus Task Scheduler

Create the notifier

The Windows pattern documented in the Steam Community guide is a notifier batch file called by a scheduled task. Put the RCON client invocation for each servermsg in the file, followed by save and quit at the deadline. Because RCON clients differ, use their documented executable, host, port, password, and command syntax rather than copying an unverified line from another client.

Keep the countdown timings in one place. If you choose the ten-minute timetable above, the notifier should wait or schedule each message at T−10 minutes, T−5 minutes, T−1 minute, and T−10 seconds, then issue save and quit at T. Log each invocation and its exit code to a file outside the game world’s save folder.

Create the scheduled task

  1. Open Windows Task Scheduler and create a task under an account that can read the notifier and launch the server.
  2. Set the trigger to the desired local time and recurrence. The Steam Community procedure documents a task repeating every 12 hours with a ten-minute countdown.
  3. For a restart at midnight, schedule the task at 23:50 because the first warning begins ten minutes earlier.
  4. Set the action to run the notifier batch file, and set “Start in” to the directory containing the RCON client if that client relies on relative files.
  5. Prevent a second instance from starting if the previous task is still running. A mutex, lock file, or Task Scheduler’s “do not start a new instance” setting can enforce this.
  6. After quit, let the ordinary server launcher start the process. If your launcher does not restart automatically, add a separate, ordered start action that runs only after the old process has exited.

A 2025 Steam Community guide author states that a server “ends by itself after running a total of 24 hours” and recommends at least two restarts per day. That is community operational advice, not an official universal Project Zomboid limit. Schedule restarts for maintenance, mod updates, or reliability needs rather than assuming every installation has a hard 24-hour cutoff.

Docker: automatic updates and container restarts

The project-zomboid-server-docker image can combine update detection, warnings, graceful shutdown, and a Docker restart policy. These environment variables are image-specific; check the image version before applying them:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Variable Documented default Effect
MOD_AUTO_UPDATE false Enables the image’s mod-update check and restart flow when set to true.
MOD_AUTO_UPDATE_INTERVAL 60 minutes How often the image checks for updates.
MOD_AUTO_UPDATE_ANNOUNCE 5 minutes Length of the in-game warning before the update restart; 0 removes the countdown.
MOD_AUTO_UPDATE_WAIT_EMPTY true Waits for the server to become empty before restarting.
MOD_AUTO_UPDATE_WAIT_MAX 2 hours Maximum time to wait for an empty server.

When an update is found, the entrypoint broadcasts a warning, waits for an empty server when configured to do so, sends RCON save and quit, and exits. Docker then applies its restart policy and launches the normal boot flow again. Setting MOD_AUTO_UPDATE_WAIT_EMPTY=false permits a restart while players remain online; setting MOD_AUTO_UPDATE_ANNOUNCE=0 removes the countdown and is appropriate only when an interruption without warning is acceptable.

Mount the world and configuration data on persistent storage, not only in the container’s writable layer. Confirm that the restart policy is enabled and that the container comes back after a deliberate clean exit. If RCON is unreachable during an update restart, the image documentation warns that graceful saving is skipped; the world may then be only as current as its last autosave.

Cron-style panels and managed hosts

Panels using cron expressions

The pz-panel documentation uses standard five-field cron expressions. Its restart task broadcasts warnings at 15, 5, and 1 minutes by default, wakes every 30 seconds, and fires each warning once per occurrence. Set the container’s TZ explicitly; without it, the panel defaults to UTC. The panel’s clean-stop path writes quit to the server rather than relying on docker stop, because a raw SIGTERM may not flush the world.

When editing a cron task, confirm the minute, hour, day-of-month, month, and weekday fields in that order. Test the expression with a near-future maintenance time, watch the panel log, and then change it to the recurring schedule. Record whether the displayed time is UTC or the timezone configured by TZ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Managed hosting control panels

Managed hosts expose the same sequence through their own UI, but labels, timezones, and plan limits differ. GTXGaming documents a “Restart with Messages” task that warns at 10, 5, 2, and 1 minutes, then saves, restarts, and performs a backup. Host Havoc documents daily or repeating scheduled restart tasks in its control panel. Supercraft’s scheduler runs in UTC and documents an example with servermsg at 15 and 5 minutes, a final restart message, and save immediately before the restart.

Before enabling any managed task, verify five details in that provider’s current interface: the timezone, warning text and intervals, whether the stop is clean, whether a backup runs before or after the restart, and whether the task is allowed by your plan. Do not assume a provider’s “restart” button is equivalent to sending save followed by quit.

Timezone and daylight-saving decisions

Choose the timezone players understand, then make every layer use it consistently. A panel or container may default to UTC, a Windows task may use the machine’s local hour, and a provider may require you to convert your local time to UTC. A task named “Daily restart 03:00 America/New_York” is easier to audit than one named only “Restart.”

  • For UTC-based schedulers, convert the desired local maintenance time and account for daylight-saving changes.
  • For Windows local-time triggers, check the machine’s region, clock synchronization, and daylight-saving setting.
  • For containerized schedulers, set TZ explicitly and document the chosen zone in deployment files.
  • After a daylight-saving transition, inspect the next scheduled occurrence and make sure a skipped or repeated hour does not create two restart tasks.

Why force-killing the server is unsafe

Project Zomboid does not reliably save the world when the process receives a termination signal. The pz-panel documentation says its stdin-based quit path is used because a raw SIGTERM or Docker stop may not flush the world. The pz-server-tools documentation likewise warns that emergency kill can cause data loss or save corruption.

If a clean shutdown hangs, capture the logs and wait through the configured grace period before using a force stop. Treat that force stop as an incident: preserve the last backup, note which players were online, and inspect the world on the next boot. Never make a force kill the normal branch of a scheduled task.

Testing and recovery plan

  1. Clone or back up the production world and test with a non-production server.
  2. Schedule a restart five to ten minutes in the future so you can observe every warning.
  3. Verify that each message appears once, in the intended order, and in the intended language.
  4. Watch the RCON client response for save and quit; record failures rather than silently continuing.
  5. Confirm that the old process exits, the launcher or container restarts it, and players can connect after boot.
  6. Inspect the world timestamp and backup output. A successful process restart is not proof that the latest world state was saved.
  7. Test an RCON outage and a failed start separately. Your alerting should identify both instead of repeatedly launching overlapping instances.

Keep a written recovery runbook containing the server directory, RCON listener address, scheduler name, timezone, backup location, and manual start command. Rotate the RCON password using the same protected process as other server credentials, and review task permissions whenever the host account changes.

Choosing an implementation

Implementation Warning customization Clean-save behavior Player-empty waiting Timezone control Backup integration Crash recovery
Windows Task Scheduler Fully scriptable; any cadence supported by the notifier. Explicit RCON save then quit. Must be scripted if required. Windows machine local time. Must be added to the script or launcher. Requires a launcher, watchdog, or second task.
Docker image Image variables control update announcements. Entrypoint sends RCON save/quit; unreachable RCON can skip graceful save. Supported with MOD_AUTO_UPDATE_WAIT_EMPTY. Container timezone; set TZ where the scheduler uses it. Depends on your volumes and backup job. Docker restart policy relaunches the container.
pz-panel-style cron task Default 15/5/1 warnings, with panel controls for changes. Writes quit through stdin instead of raw container stop. Panel-specific; verify its task settings. UTC unless TZ is set. Panel or separate backup task. Panel and container policy dependent.
Managed host panel Provider-defined; examples range from 10/5/2/1 to 15/5. Verify whether “restart” performs a clean save and quit. Provider-specific. May be local time or UTC. Some tasks include a backup; confirm ordering. Provider-specific watchdog and startup behavior.

Use Windows scripting when you need complete control and own the machine. Use the Docker flow when updates and container recovery are priorities. Use a panel or managed host when you want a graphical scheduler, but audit its timezone and shutdown semantics instead of treating the button label as proof of a safe save.

Designing a schedule players can trust

Pick a maintenance window with the lowest expected population, then make it predictable. A twice-daily schedule can be useful for a busy public server, while a smaller private server may need restarts only for updates or maintenance. The Steam Community guide’s documented Windows example repeats every 12 hours and starts its ten-minute countdown at the scheduled trigger. If the desired restart is 00:00, the trigger belongs at 23:50; scheduling it at midnight would move the actual restart to 00:10.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Write the cadence in the welcome message, Discord rules, and server status page. State both the timezone and approximate downtime, such as “Daily restart at 03:00 UTC; warnings at 02:50, 02:55, 02:59, and 02:59:50.” If you alter the cadence for a mod update, announce the exception separately so players do not mistake it for a permanent change.

Do not rely on a single final warning. Players may be in a vehicle, inside a building, or dealing with a slow connection when the message appears. Ten minutes gives them time to stop combat and reach safety; five minutes signals that new trips should not begin; one minute and the ten-second notice make the final interruption unambiguous.

Player-empty waiting versus a fixed deadline

Waiting for an empty server protects active players but can postpone maintenance indefinitely. The Docker image defaults to MOD_AUTO_UPDATE_WAIT_EMPTY=true and limits that wait to two hours with MOD_AUTO_UPDATE_WAIT_MAX=2h. This is a useful model for busy servers: announce first, wait for players to leave, then perform the clean save and quit. If the maximum expires, the configured behavior may restart with players still connected, so communicate that possibility in the server rules.

Setting MOD_AUTO_UPDATE_WAIT_EMPTY=false chooses a fixed interruption instead. That can be appropriate for a private server where everyone expects a known maintenance time, but it should not be enabled accidentally on a public world. Windows scripts and many managed panels do not automatically wait for zero players, so check their documentation or add an explicit player-count check before sending quit.

Backups, logs, and failure alerts

A restart schedule is not a backup strategy. Keep backups outside the active save directory, retain more than one generation, and periodically perform a restore test on a separate instance. If a provider says its restart task performs a backup, confirm whether the backup occurs before or after save and whether it runs on every recurrence or only on demand. GTXGaming’s documented task combines warnings, save, restart, and backup, but the ordering still matters when you evaluate recovery protection.

Log each stage with a timestamp: warning sent, RCON response received, save requested, quit requested, process exited, backup completed, and server listening again. A scheduler exit code of zero does not prove that the server saved successfully. Alert when RCON authentication fails, when quit is not acknowledged, when the process remains alive beyond the grace period, or when the normal launcher fails to produce a listening server.

Keep logs away from the world directory so a cleanup job cannot delete both evidence and saves. Redact the RCON password from command-line logging, process listings, and support tickets. When an outage occurs, preserve the last known-good backup before attempting repeated starts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common failure modes

Symptom Likely cause Safe response
Warnings appear, but the server never restarts. The script sent messages but failed on save, quit, or the launcher step. Inspect RCON responses and process logs; run the clean shutdown manually during maintenance.
The world rolls back after a restart. RCON was unreachable, the save was skipped, or the process was force-stopped. Restore the newest verified backup, fix connectivity, and remove force-stop behavior from the normal path.
Two countdowns run together. A recurring task started while an earlier run was still active, or two schedulers target the same instance. Disable duplicate tasks and add a lock, mutex, or “do not start a new instance” policy.
Restart happens at the wrong local hour. The scheduler uses UTC or a different machine timezone. Set TZ where supported, convert the intended time, and name the task with its timezone.
Players receive no warning during an update. MOD_AUTO_UPDATE_ANNOUNCE=0 or the image-specific variable was not loaded. Check the running container environment and restore a positive announcement interval.
Container exits but does not return. No restart policy is enabled, or the normal boot command fails. Test a deliberate clean exit, inspect container logs, and verify the restart policy and persistent volumes.

Operational checklist

  • RCON is enabled, password-protected, firewalled, and reachable only from the scheduler.
  • The warning timetable, timezone, and expected downtime are documented for players and administrators.
  • The task sends save before quit and never force-kills the process as its routine action.
  • Only one restart owner and one active task control the server.
  • The launcher, Docker policy, panel, or host actually starts the server after a clean exit.
  • World files live on persistent storage and backups are stored separately.
  • Logs and alerts cover failed RCON calls, hung shutdowns, failed boots, and backup errors.
  • A recent restore test proves that the backup can recover a playable world.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I warn players before a Project Zomboid restart?

Send staged servermsg commands through authenticated RCON. A ten-minute pattern is 10 minutes, 5 minutes, 1 minute, and 10 seconds before the deadline, followed by save and quit.

What commands save and quit safely?

Send save first, wait for the RCON client to report success, then send quit. Do not substitute a force kill or raw container stop for the clean quit path.

Why does the Docker image wait for an empty server?

Its documented default, MOD_AUTO_UPDATE_WAIT_EMPTY=true, delays an update restart until no players are online. MOD_AUTO_UPDATE_WAIT_MAX limits that wait to two hours; disabling the option permits a restart with players connected.

Can I schedule a restart at midnight with a ten-minute countdown?

Yes. Trigger the notifier at 23:50 so its ten-minute countdown reaches the save and quit deadline at 00:00. A trigger at 00:00 would restart around 00:10.

Does a Project Zomboid server have to restart every 24 hours?

No official universal limit is established here. A 2025 Steam Community guide author claimed that servers end after 24 hours and recommended two restarts daily, but that is community operational advice rather than an Indie Stone specification.

What should I do if RCON is unreachable during an automatic update?

Treat the graceful save as failed. The Docker image documentation warns that the world may be only as current as its last autosave. Investigate the network and credentials, preserve the newest backup, and do not repeatedly launch overlapping instances.

Do managed hosting panels automatically back up before restarting?

Some do and some do not. GTXGaming documents a restart task that includes a backup; Host Havoc documents scheduled restarts; other providers expose different controls. Verify backup ordering, timezone, clean-stop behavior, and plan limits in the current panel.

The Bottom Line

Use one controlled sequence everywhere: broadcast clear countdown messages, send save, send quit, and let the normal launcher, container policy, or host panel start the server. Protect RCON, fix the timezone, prevent overlapping tasks, retain tested backups, and verify the complete cycle on a test instance before making it a player-facing routine.
