The parts list identifies the missing element; search LEGO’s replacement-pieces service or Pick a Brick with its element number or design number. If LEGO does not list the piece, search BrickLink, translating between LEGO’s identifiers and BrickLink’s item number. Before ordering, match the exact shape, color, decoration and variant, and confirm current availability, shipping and seller terms.
Why the set number is the starting point
LEGO Marvel sets can have similar character names, themes or subtitles. A set name alone is therefore a weak identifier when you need one particular replacement. LEGO says current set numbers are five to seven digits and appear prominently on the box and instruction booklet. Record that number exactly, including every digit.

Use the number rather than a character name, movie title or a description such as “the red superhero set.” The number leads to the correct instruction file and parts information even when several Marvel sets contain similar minifigures or vehicles.

- Check the front or spine of the instruction booklet.
- Look through any bags, inventory notes or photographs of the set for a printed number.
- If you have neither box nor booklet, browse LEGO.com and identify the set there using its theme, release information or appearance. LEGO’s guidance on set and piece numbers is available at LEGO’s identifying set and piece numbers guide.
Do not order a part until the set number is confirmed. A nearly identical Marvel set can use a different accessory, print or color, and that difference may not be obvious from a character name.

Use the instructions to identify the missing element
Open the building instructions associated with your set number. For newer sets, LEGO places an inventory or parts list at the back. Find the illustration that matches the missing piece, then write down the number printed beside it and the required quantity.
Element ID and design ID are not the same thing
LEGO commonly uses two identifiers:
- Element ID: identifies a particular shape-and-color combination. It is the most useful number when you need the exact colored piece shown in your set’s inventory.
- Design ID: identifies the piece’s physical shape. The same design can exist in several colors, so a design number alone may return multiple possibilities.
LEGO says either identifier can be entered in its replacement-pieces service or Pick a Brick. When both are available, start with the element ID and keep the design ID as a cross-check.
Finding a molded design number
Some parts have a small four- or five-digit design number molded into the inside or underside. Use bright, angled light and rotate the piece; the number may be recessed and difficult to see in a dark or transparent element. Photographing the piece and enlarging the image can help, but treat a blurry reading as uncertain. Pair the molded number with the piece’s color before searching, because one design ID can represent several color variants.
Printed tiles, decorated minifigure parts and transparent elements can be especially easy to confuse. Compare the part in your hand with the instruction illustration, not just with a text description.
Check LEGO’s official replacement route first
Once you have the set number and element or design ID, try LEGO’s own replacement-pieces service. It is the most direct route for a part that belongs to a specific LEGO set, but availability is not guaranteed for every element, region or service condition.
- Open the LEGO help page for identifying set and piece numbers: https://www.lego.com/en-us/service/help-topics/article/identifying-lego-set-and-piece-numbers.
- Follow the replacement-pieces link or open LEGO’s replacement-parts search from the service area.
- Enter the set number if the service offers a set-based lookup. If you already identified the element, search with its element ID or design ID.
- Review the returned image, name and color. Confirm that they match the instruction illustration and the piece you need.
- Add the requested quantity only after checking whether the service lists the item for your region and current session.
LEGO’s help guidance also points to Pick a Brick as a place to search by element or design number. Use the same identification checks there: a result with the right shape but a different color is not a match, and a decorated variant is not interchangeable with an undecorated one.

What to record from the official result
- The identifier that produced the result.
- The displayed color and part image.
- Whether the part is offered at the time you search.
- Any regional delivery, minimum-order, shipping or service conditions shown during checkout.
Do not assume that a part shown in an instruction inventory is still sold individually. Set instructions document what was included, while replacement and Pick a Brick catalogs reflect current service availability.
Use Pick a Brick when the replacement service does not find it
Pick a Brick can be useful when you know the element or design number but the set-based replacement path does not return a result. Search both identifiers if necessary. A design-number search may show several colors; filter or compare the displayed color with the inventory.
A reliable Pick a Brick search sequence
- Copy the number from the instruction inventory rather than retyping it from memory.
- Search the element ID first, if one is listed.
- If there is no result, search the design ID.
- Inspect every color and visual variant returned for that design.
- Check the quantity, regional availability, shipping terms and any current service restrictions before paying.
If the search accepts only one numbering format, try the alternate identifier. LEGO’s official guide explains where these numbers come from and how they relate to a part. Keep a note of the exact number and color you confirmed so you can use the same information on another catalog.
Search BrickLink when LEGO cannot supply the piece
BrickLink is a separate catalog and seller marketplace. Its catalog may contain older, retired or otherwise unavailable elements, but it uses its own item-number system. LEGO’s Design ID and Element ID are not guaranteed to work as BrickLink item numbers.
BrickLink explains the distinction in its Part IDs and Alternate Numbers help article. Its marketplace search is available at BrickLink’s marketplace, and its finding parts guidance describes ways to search with alternate terms and identifiers.

If an element ID copied from LEGO produces no BrickLink result, that does not prove the part is absent. BrickLink may catalog the same physical piece under a different item number or name. Keep the LEGO number beside the BrickLink result. It is your reference for the original set, while the BrickLink item number identifies the marketplace listing you are evaluating.
Check the listing, not just the thumbnail
- Shape: confirm dimensions, connection points, slopes, clips or other distinctive geometry.
- Color: LEGO color names and marketplace color names can differ; compare the physical appearance and catalog swatch.
- Decoration: a printed face, logo, weapon pattern or comic-style graphic must match exactly.
- Variant: small changes in mold, hood, visor, hinge or accessory design can make two parts non-equivalent.
- Condition: read whether the seller describes the piece as new, used, worn or damaged.
- Quantity: make sure the listing supplies the number of pieces your inventory requires.
Marketplace stock, prices, shipping and seller terms change. No particular BrickLink listing should be treated as guaranteed availability until you have checked it in your region.
Compare the available sourcing routes
| Route | Best use | Checks before ordering |
|---|---|---|
| LEGO replacement-pieces service | Official search tied to LEGO’s own replacement process; can use a set number or piece identifier. | Whether the exact element is offered in your region and under the current service conditions. |
| LEGO Pick a Brick | Searching directly by an element ID or design ID. | Exact color and variant, current stock, shipping and service terms. |
| BrickLink marketplace | Finding parts through a broad catalog and independent sellers, including pieces LEGO may not currently list. | Translation from LEGO IDs to the BrickLink item number, exact variant, seller terms, delivery and total cost. |
| General marketplace search | Optional secondary search after the correct identifier and color are known. | That the listing actually matches the identifier, color and variant; seller quality, stock, returns and delivery are not established by the set instructions. |
The official route is usually the simplest place to begin because your set number and inventory already point to LEGO’s own records. A marketplace becomes more useful when the official services do not list the element or when you need an older part, but the additional catalog translation and seller checks are your responsibility.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsVerify an exact match before you buy
Most replacement mistakes happen when a buyer finds a visually similar piece and stops checking. Use this checklist against the instruction image, the inventory entry and the listing:
- Is the piece the same physical shape, including height, thickness and connection points?
- Is the color the same under normal light, rather than merely described with a similar name?
- Does the printed or decorated artwork match its position, orientation and design?
- Is it the correct mold revision or accessory variant?
- Does the number of pieces meet the inventory quantity?
- Is the item listed as available now, rather than merely present in a catalog?
- What are the shipping charge, delivery region, minimum order and return or seller conditions?
For a one-piece order, shipping can matter more than the part price. Compare the total delivered cost and the risk of accepting a used or substituted item. If the listing uses a different number, save both numbers and a screenshot or note of the matching shape and color.
Troubleshoot a failed search
The set number returns the wrong set
Recheck every digit and whether you entered a set number rather than a product, booklet or barcode number. Search LEGO again by the full number, then compare the returned box art with your copy. Similar Marvel names are not sufficient confirmation.

The parts list has no number
Some instructions, especially older ones, may not present a convenient inventory in the same format as newer instructions. Use the piece illustration and any number printed near it, then inspect the element for a molded design ID. If the number is unreadable, identify the shape, color and decoration first and search the catalogs by those attributes.

The molded number produces several results
That is expected for a design ID shared by multiple colors. Narrow the result with the exact color shown in the instructions. If several decorated versions remain, compare the artwork and mold details rather than choosing the first image.
LEGO finds the design but not the color
Try the element ID from the inventory, check Pick a Brick separately and confirm that the item is not simply unavailable in your region. A design match does not establish that the colored element is currently offered.
BrickLink rejects the LEGO number
Switch from the LEGO element or design ID to BrickLink’s catalog search. BrickLink uses an Item Number, and its help center documents alternate-number searches. Search the catalog by shape, color and decoration, then verify the result against the original instruction image.
The replacement looks right but does not fit
Stop assembly and compare the connection points and mold revision. A similar-looking clip, hinge, plate or weapon can have a different geometry. Recheck the instruction step and inventory quantity before opening the replacement’s packaging or mixing it with other parts.
Keep a record for future missing pieces
Save a small parts record with the set number, instruction page or inventory entry, element ID, design ID, color, quantity and the catalog route that worked. Photograph unusual printed or transparent elements next to a ruler or a known LEGO part, without relying on the photograph as the only identification.

When a set is being sorted, place uncertain pieces in a labeled bag instead of guessing. If a part is missing from a sealed bag, record the bag number and the step where it is first needed; that information can distinguish a genuinely missing element from one that was placed in a later bag or stuck inside another part.
For a used set, inventory the entire model against the instructions before ordering. Ordering each missing element separately can create multiple shipping charges, while a single accurately identified order may be more practical. The correct choice depends on the available service, seller terms and your region.
What cannot be determined without the specific set and region
This general method does not establish a live price, stock status or eligibility for a particular Marvel set or piece. Those details change by element, country and date. The set-specific instructions identify what should be present; the replacement service, Pick a Brick or a marketplace search determines whether that item can be obtained now.
For that reason, do not rely on a promise that every Marvel element is replaceable or that one catalog’s number will work unchanged in another. Confirm the exact listing and current terms at the moment you order.
Quick decision path
- Have the set number? If not, identify the set on LEGO.com before searching for parts.
- Have the inventory number? Open the instructions and use the parts list, then inspect the piece for a molded design ID.
- Does LEGO list it? Search the replacement-pieces service and Pick a Brick with the element ID, then the design ID if needed.
- Still unavailable? Search BrickLink using its catalog and Item Number system, not an assumption that LEGO’s number is universal.
- Ready to order? Confirm shape, color, decoration, variant, quantity, availability, shipping and seller or service terms.
Following that order prevents the two most expensive errors: buying a similar but incompatible part and paying for a listing that does not deliver to your region.
